If any battle emphasises the importance of a clear command structure it was this one. The Scots had a plan and they stuck rigidly to it, the English were badly led and descended into chaos and calamity. The English Knights were indeed brave and heroic but their indiscipline was their undoing. As for the English infantry, though they weren't heavily utilised during the main battle it was during the aftermath when they were in full flight that the pursuing Scots cut them down in their thousands.

  • @johnhammonds5143

That Scottish knight in English service was Sir Alexander Seton. He held lands on either side of the border, and thus was subject to medieval vassal service to both royal persons, being required to provide men and arms for a certain number of days of military service per year. Alexander was most likely the brother of Sir Christopher Seton, who was a great big bear of a man with a six-foot sword. Sir Christopher Seton saved Robert Bruce's live at the disastrous battle of Methven in 1306, was granted Bruce's daughter in marriage, and given the right to display the royal double tressure (the double border) on the Seton arms. Alexander Seton remained loyal to Bruce, was a signatory of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, and became governor of Berwick, and wound up dying in battle against the English.

The Auld Alliance was not a one way thing were the Scots sought French protection, Scottish armies frequently went to France to aid the French, they fought with the French against the English in the 100 years war, and fought side by side with Joan of Arch. You could say the Scots aided the French more often than the French aided the Scots.

This is great stuff as always.
Bannockburn comes at an interesting time in military history. It's near the beginning of the turning point where heavy cavalry are no longer the end-all on the battlefield.
Started in 1302 at Courtrai in France and 1311 at Halmyros in Athens. Infantry realized that they can defeat horsemen with good tactics. The Scots used the infantry square, the Catalan mercenaries used a swamp, and the Flemish used pikes.

  • @Thraim.

Well, we generally descend from more people than we imagine (even if I guess that wasn't what he meant, I assume he talked about a direct male line or something).
Assuming all our ancestors were totally unrelated before marrying to each other (which isn't the case though) we would have 2^x ancestors x generations ago, for example 30 generations ago any of us would have 1,073,741,824 ancestors, more than the world population at the time lol. Of course, because of preexisting family ties and everything it's far less, but it just shows that if we go far enough, we still have a lot of ancestors. Most of whom we'll never know about.
If you go farther in the past it's worse, after all according to an article in The Atlantic, everyone in the Western world is descended from Charlemagne. Pretty cool.

Really appreciate you covering these crucial battles. It's amazing you have Scottish relatives, I'm over here in Ireland, Belfast. Obviously the word Scot comes from the Latin Scotti meaning the Irish Celts and Gaelic clanns but it is so interesting that Robert the Bruce is actually buried in Ireland. I have visited his grave on Rathlin Island. I'm also studying Irish medieval history and would be great to see a video sometime about Ireland striking for freedom in 1916.

Also the Jacobite war from 1689-91 had many significant battles that were hugely important to subsequent Irish history (Aughrim, the Boyne,).

I find it interesting that so many of the mistakes made by the English here, were the same sort made repeatedly by the French during the Hundred Years war. While the English, in those wars, worked much more like the Scots did here, fighting largely on foot, as a cohesive force, working together. It seems they learned a thing or two, from their experiences fighting the Scots.

I have absolutely nothing to contribute to this conversation other than to say that as a former cavalryman, I grinned ear to ear at "Infantry. NOT. DOING. ANYTHING." But on a serious note, that has persisted into modern times and you've talked about it in past videos. We say in the army that the 3 pillars are shoot, move, commicate. If you can't do 1, fall back on the other 2. If you can't do 2, fall back on the last. Here we see an example of communication failure, with reserve forces not moving. The shoot option is clearly not working with charges being repulsed. That leaves only move... Which means all commands be damned, it's time to retreat

They should do Edward III’s counterattack with the astounding victories Dupplin Moor and Halidon Hill, as well as the defeat at Neville’s Cross that nearly completely reversed Bannockburn. Edward III stayed his hand with the Treaty of Berwick and settled on accepting the submission of David II as a vassal of the English crown, but had he been in a less generous mood, he could have very easily gone much further.
I support HistoryMarche on Patreon and I’ve recommended making videos on these lesser known but important battles in the ceaseless Anglo-Scottish wars. Everything is connected to everything else. The tapestry of history is woven by threads that never end.

Pretty sure Edward the III was smart enough to realise that defeating Scottish armies charging up a hill at English longbow men is one thing but trying to annex Scotland is another.
English battlefield victories were the norm during his reign, just look at the french.
But actually occupying and winning a long term war we’re not, Edward lived to see his land gains in France completely reverse.
Tried to occupy Scotland it would have led to rebellion, prolonged costly insurgency and eventually defeat.

Love your work, Chris. :) I would recommend you to watch/react to the Culloden 1964 docudrama made by Peter Watkins. It is somewhat hard to watch, not a hollywood version of the battle at all, but it is masterfully designed and shot, with very few resources.

I’ll have to check that out before (hopefully) visiting Culloden this summer.

This battle is an example of why you DON'T use your most elite troops (cavalry) at the start of a battle. If they get defeated the infantry will think:"Well these guys just beat our "unbeatable" cavalry. What are we gonna do now?"
Use your infantry first, then your elite cavalry. If your infantry falls back, your cavalry which is the most elite force you got, will still maintain morale, because:"Who would expect those peasants to win anyways?"

The thing is tho, at this time period, Cavalry was seen as modern day Tanks, they really were massively op at this time.

We're possibly related! How long did it take for you to uncover that royal connection? It took my family some 30 years of genealogy research and ultimately DNA to suppose that one of our dead ends could be the same woman as the daughter of the same name of someone noble enough to trace their ancestry back to the Scottish royals.

Incorrect. All monarchs starting with Henry VIII have been descendants of Edward IV, who was a Plantagenet (Richard III’s brother).

@davidmcintyre8145 I've seen all of that and it's absolutely NOT proven. The rightful king is not some dude in Australia. Besides, Charles has multiple other lines of descent from the Plantagenets, making that irrelevant to our discussion.
But as for the illegitimacy rumors for Edward IV, there is a TON of evidence that Time Team conveniently ignored to make their argument. Here's a good write up on it. tudorsdynasty.com/edward-iv-legitimacy/
