Hi John! Two day owner of a KJ Classic from Lowe’s. Plan to fire it up tomorrow, but after watching countless videos, I’m wondering if I bought an obsolete model. Felt-like gaskets, no lid lock, nor easy opening lid. Hoping I didn’t get screwed, but it would not be the first time! I am impressed with the quality of construction, and superb packaging. I just feel like I should have shopped around a bit more! I enjoy your videos! Thanks!
That model is about 1/2 the price of the Classic II (haven't seen the price for this 3rd generation), so I wouldn't say you got screwed. The felt gasket and top vent on the classic you bought are upgradeable at least to the classic II parts. I don't know about the easy opening lid part because honestly I never had any problem with the weight of the lid on the original. Also, when you say you should have shopped around more, the only place that sells the original KJ model is Lowes, everywhere else it is the Classic II and soon to be Classic III. There really isn't any shopping around because they seem to police the selling price for vendors pretty tightly so a general store discount coupon is about the only way of getting them cheaper.
well only thing i want to know, is can i upgrade the grilling basket on my classik 2 Big, because i see the benefits on the air flow for the Charcoal the slow cooker replaces the Reflector plates, but i think adding some smoke wood is now a bit mor complex , in that case the Monolit option is nice to add wood or u have to start with a steel box for smoking woodsnippels.. i see the point for the slow cooker, in case of the circulation, but, but it wont fit in my classic 2 Big also i wounder how the slow roller fits in the command and conquer methode, well i like Kamado Joe allways inovative sad for me i buyed last year the 2 because of the promise that everything wich comes out new, is adapable to the old... wich is now not longer possible.. :( i understand that the new airflow had to change the chamber, but i allso understand the old Kamado Joes will now become Obsolete, with replacement parts to i fear...
I just bought the new coal basket and its pretty good, I can't compare it to the fire grate with the holes, but I figured it would get better air flow. I have the Kamado Big Joe 11 , I could've received the sloroller but I didn't. Maybe later. I'm a virgin to the KBJ so I will wait to buy Accessories . What do you think of that ikamand?
So what makes you think I'm gonna buy a BBQ for $1,200? I'm a college student who really wants to get into barbecuing, but right now I just have a little portable grill and it works great, but eventually I wanna go big. If all nice BBQs are upwards of $1,000 then it's gonna be a while...
"What makes you think I'm going to buy a Lamborghini for $300K? I'm a college student who really wants to drive one, but right now I drive a Ford Fiesta and it works great but eventually I wanna go big. If all nice supercars are upwards of $300K then it's gonna be a while..." See how stupid you sound?
Hey Herm! I hear ya. Google cheap smoker made from terra cotta pots. Cheap & works very good for very little money. Learned about this from Alton Brown/ Good Eats.......
Um, KJ is a premium brand. The “BMW” of Kamado grills. If you want value go get started on a Vision Grill. Excellent quality. Then someday upgrade to something that’s better designed like a KJ. I’m about to make that exact switch. But price points differ from brand to brand and by model. But nothing wrong with Vision, I make excellent BBQ on mine.
I need that slow roll smoking insert.....like now!
Are the new parts backwards compatible with previous classics?

I would like to get one but i'm looking at something bigger in size, in the plus 30" diameter.

So what makes you think these are being marketed to college students? Don't tell me... majoring in "Gender Studies", right?
