  • In this video I talk about the basic operating principles of a dual rate coilover shock, and show mine assembled and disassembled. My car is a mid engine twincharged Cummins diesel powered ultra 4 car. The rear has 19” of travel with a 3.5x14” external bypass shock and a 2.5x12” dual rate coilover, with 400/350lb springs. The front has 16” of travel with a 2.5x16” external bypass shock and a 2.5x16” dual rate coilover, with 200/175lb springs.

You’re Aubrey. I know you. I was a friend of Ayla. I remember meeting you maybe ten years ago or so I think at Pie Fest. Nice buggy man. I didn’t know you did that kind of stuff. I was just poking around UA-cam trying to find a solution to my fox coilovers making a clunk sound. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska now. But man if I was still in PA I’d have to come check this out. This just made my day, how cool.

Nice, I love Alaska. Never been to Fairbanks though. The furthest north we went was Matanuska. Your coilovers shouldn't be making any sounds, unless the mounts are bad. Maybe look at ball joints or cv/universal joints.

@@irionmotorsports Yeah I can't imagine ever leaving Alaska anymore. I Do love how fair the mountains and land are in PA though. But yeah I took the spring off of the coilover and released the nitrogen so I can move the shaft back and forth and it clunks from inside the body when I move it in both directions with little effort for like a 1/4 before oil starts moving through. They're only three months old so I can probably send them in for warranty but I just hate when I have someone else work on my stuff. I can't imagine anything being broken inside there. But it voids the warranty to crack it open. Maybe it has an air bubble or low oil. No oil leaking though.

Thats odd. Sounds like the nut on the end of the shaft might be loose. Fox makes the best shocks, but their turnaround is slow. If you send them in to be repaired it will take a while. I would see if you can get them replaced. If they won't replace them, either repair them yourself or take them to a local shop to have them worked on. I wouldn't drive on them any more as they are.

@@irionmotorsports Well, you know what? You were absolutely right. The nut was loose by about a 1/4 inch. That was an easy fix. Thank man. I appreciate the input.

Watched video a million times trying to catch how you remove the shock from the springs. Are you just removing the top cap and sliding them out the top??

No, there is a collar on the bottom (rod) end. The collar slides up and there is a snap ring under it. Once you remove the snap ring, the collar and springs will slide off.
