I am quite happy they did. Such better figures now. Most of the action features are only beloved because of nostalgia. They actually made the figures very unplayable. Or very stiff.
I must say that I am pretty cheesed off that I need to buy a vehicle (which I don't collect in Origins) in order to get my favorite Heroic Master. Mekaneck should have been single carded and they should have included the rip cord with the Ripper. Add me to the "not upset about the action feature" pile, but I do wish Mekaneck came with an extra, longer neck piece like the Classics one did.
It is a shame they removed both action features. The alongating neck would be great even if you have to pull and push it into place, that would solve the issues Dan have and still be more fun than adding a piece. Also, becausde it is a boxed release, it would make sense to get a bit more pricey and have some action features.
I've seen an Origins figure taken apart, due to the arm socket design, an extending neck would not fit inside a torso. So they'd have to redesign the torso/sockets to get the vintage feature in, I guess like they did with the battle armor figures.

Contrary to popular believe, the Road Ripper wasn't changed due to licensing issues... It was because He-Man noticed the lack of roads in Eternia, and decided to call it the Ground Ripper instead!
That's because all the roads had been ripped.... RIP roads ⚰️🙃... Now we need a Street Sweeper to clean up all the ripped roads off of the ground. Also I feel that the rip cord feature being omitted decreased the weight yes but therefore increased the speed!

With origins, they would’ve fixed the twisted waist issue because the connection point at the bottom of the torso already spins. Meaning, attach the mechanism inside to the already existing spinning port on the bottom, and you will have a mek-a-neck with neck extension and forward facing legs.
I’m with you on the action feature take. Can I understand that other fans could be disappointed, definitely. But I think this choice give the toys so many more play & display opportunities

A lot of people seem to be bad-mouthing it, so if it ends up on clearance, I may get a few more to customise up Blue Argentinian, Red UK Mini-Comics, and Red Prototype Road Rippers. As for Mekaneck, I think there would've been a way to give him a telescoping neck and still retain full articulation. Y'know those extending wands with magnets on the end to help you pick things up? Build something like that into his torso, put a Universal Origins ball-joint on the end of it, and there ya go. That's be worth the price of a deluxe, I'd think.
Given the peg-warming status of the other deluxe figures (Ram-Man and Clamp Champ), I'm not surprised that they decided not to go that route in order to give him an action feature.
They could do the extending neck without requiring a waist twist. Just put the extending part in his belly, pull head up to extend. Lots of toys do something like that, like Power of the Primes Beachcomber. He extends at the waist and it stays in place either way.
I'm okay with the Ground Ripper having no more flywheel engine. Both of my vintage ones got wrecked when they collided with either our apartment door or a wall - both times the front axle disintegrated from the force of the impact. That said, I'm eagerly awaiting the Talon Fighter and Point Dread. It's probably too much to hope for a Dragon Walker reissue and that makes me kinda sad. Also, any idea if we'll get a Night Stalker? There have been so many repaints already, where's the evil horsey?
Best case scenario. Single carded Mekaneck comes with the extending neck action feature. Everybody would be happy, except that guy who wants this one without a Road Ripper.
@@MsBee Maybe, maybe not. I think it depends on the cost to tool up the action feature. If that cost is more than the amount of people Mattel thinks want it, you're right. However I think action feature Mekaneck would sell better than Disco Skeletor or other deco variants. It just comes down to cost vs earnings.
Honestly, I feel like they could have figured out some other way for the neck to extend without the twist-waist thing. Without the feature, this just doesn't feel right. I feel like they didn't even try to do anything else. Even a slider on his back would have been acceptable!
This is a vehicle that I wish didn't include a figure. The figure I can't wait to see the most with the interchangeable parts is Modulock. The Road Ripper this time has a better peg for the seat belt. I hate they left the holes for the rip cord. They should have left that mechanism.

Lighter toys means less shipping costs since boats are limited by what they can carry weight wise. These toys are still made overseas since the originals so it's all a logistics case.
I'd rather have the full articulation instead of the neck feature personally, I'm glad with how it turned out. Including him with a vehicle was a bonus 💯
This is another set with poor decision making all around, imo. I'm an action feature fan, so I'll get that complaint out of the way right away. But even going beyond that, you pack him with a vehicle (which not everyone is going to want to be forced to buy to get Mekaneck); the vehicle itself doesn't even work with the ripcord; they made the base of the neck blue and wide so you can't double or triple neck pieces for a super long neck to compensate yourself for lack of feature; and even IF you didn't care about that, you have to buy multiples of the vehicle set and stockpile Ground Rippers just to get extra neck pieces. Happy for the folks that actually like this set, but I see a complete failure of decision making from all angles. Mekaneck should have been single carded and, if he wasn't gonna function, design the neck piece for stacking. If Ground Ripper NEEDED a pack in, why not swap Mekaneck into a normal retail wave to replace minicomic Roboto or something and make the repaint a pack in? I'll be taking the same stance here I did with Rattlor: skipping for now, if Mattel wants to make functioning Mekaneck and Rattlor 2.0s in the future before the line runs its course I'll get those, but if not, I'll content myself with not having them in Origins and stick to my vintage versions
I got this figures at gil Roy's toy store in the winter of 1983. Me and friend Darnell was walking to the store and went to gil Roy's. Aww the childhood memories and nastalgia. But, Iam kinda disappointed Mattel keep the action feature. Without the action feature it's not the same figure.Its just convenient to just turn the body and the neck will turn. such a disappointment to both the vehicle and figure to have lost their action features - it's insulting that they call this a "ripper" of any kind and have some stupid callout when it does nothing more than ROLL. It could have easily had a pull back feature that sent it flying, eliminating the need for a long rip cord. At least it would have done SOMETHING! As for Mekaneck, it's just more tone deaf cheapness from Mattel. They could easily have incorporated ALL character's action features in this line by redesigning how they activated, but yet they went this route - the permanent head down or head up - SO lame.

Just got mine I do miss the old feature though. Yeah Trademark issues sucks now today .It is Either use it I think or loose it. I think Even DIsney is in danger of loosing Mickey Mouse. i think Mattel now owns the trademark to Tantrum. When Back then Hasbro used it for Transformers Line. But had to rename the character Yes the vehicle is very light weight. & OMG LOL I remember a friend too optibotimus. He made a big mistake opening his up. He thought the belt was part of the packaging. SO he accidently cut the belt too. He said he Messed up Bad. Felt so bad for him.
Hello, I believe Mekaneck came out earlier in the line, when they were still trying to make as many new figures as they could with the smallest budget possible, while Rattlor came out later when all the figures had new molds and more expensive features. So I think Mekaneck was in fact a pretty creative way of giving the character a new action feature with the littlest retooling possible. Ciao
I bought one of these sets specifically to test that. It's a bit of a tight fit, requires a bit of contortion, and knee-bending, and works better with some figures than with others. But it's JUST about doable, at least with a few of the figures I tried out. Ram Man, not so much.
How odd. All that talk of missing action features, yet you didn't even try and demonstrate the Ground Ripper's "real racing action" feature. Was it so underwhelming that you completely forgot about it even being mentioned on the packaging? 🤔
The adult collectors need to stop crying about missing action features. Origins was never intended to be replicas, and I'm not sure why so many can't understand that. If you want the gimmicks so much, just get vintage.
Until I saw this in store last week, I didn’t notice the resemblance to the Sky Sled head. Now I kinda want to go back and grab another Sky Sled , paint it green, and two of these, paint one blue. As for the action feature in his neck, what about an extended neck piece that has an extending feature? No need for a new torso mold, as the feature is contained within the extra neck piece. I do agree the blue collar ruins it…unless you have more articulation points, so the collar would be the elbow bend joint of his extensions.
i want him by himself. I dont care about the vehicles. The only line I care about vehicles is GIJOE . Now if i want him i have to pay this jacked up price for nothing.

Enh, I had the original Road Ripper, and to be honest, the speed was great, but that big heavy central flywheel made the vehicle wobble and flop about as it sped along, and it looked ridiculous. Plus, if you got it going fast enough, a crash could cause damage -- either to the toy, to whatever it crashed into, or both. I really like how smoothly this version rolls, though.

Absolutely no different than his mace or any other accessory. All these Origins releases that have honored the original nostalgic action features so far, but this one gets derped. Too bad. I really dislike the pull apart design. I was looking forward to letting my nephews play with my original figs, but these new designs have taught them to pull the figs apart.
Both action features would have been pretty easy to implement, they've cut them out to save money: this way Mekaneck uses an almost entirely recicled mold and the road ripper doesn't require as much assembly time (or metal parts) in the factory. Mattel failed to hook on new fans to the line, so it's losing grounds and they have to cheapen the production to keep it running. Ciao
I too am happy that it is done without the action feature. I always thought poor mech a neck got the raw deal for action features as he could only extend his neck sideways.
Been waiting for this release..... and now I'm disappointed. Taking away the action features of both figures just seems lazy to me. I guess I'll be looking for original figurines.
I fully agree. The action features were the entire distinction of many figures in the vintage line. Snout Spout? Mosquitor? Ram Man? All their gimmicks got Origins updates, at deluxe price tags. Neck attachments feel like a cop out. If nothing else, the extending mechanism could have kept a ball joint up top, to turn his head. Problem solved.
This is probably my least favorite release in this line. These two toys were probably two of my most favorite of the originals and they neutered them both. Very, very disappointing.
You see, and I feel the opposite: I don’t really mind that the rip-cord feature was removed from the Ground Ripper because it moves just fine without it (I also don’t remember always using it that often with the vintage vehicle), but Mekaneck is lacking without the actual ability to extend his neck. My issue is that Mattel has had at least 3 years to come up with a way to do it that wouldn’t have sacrificed from the posability of the figure. Yes, the vintage figure turned the waist to extend the neck…so why couldn’t they incorporate some sort of retractable extender within the body itself that pops out with the press of a button and clicks back into place when you push it down or something? The head could still be popped off the top and moved around. I’m no engineer, but this seems like something they could have tried tooling into a deluxe figure. But nope…let’s just do it exactly the same way we did it with Classics 10 years ago… 🫤
When I pose him with the neck extension installed, I must twist his waist. I can't help it. I have to pose him like a vintage Mekaneck with his head up. I did this in 1985, I did this in 2003, and Im doing it again now. Lol.

Mm. Rare miss from the Origins vehicles - the Land Shark, Stridor, Roton and Wind Raider were all superior to the vintage versions.
I like the softer plastic armor here - my vintage one is broken & superglued on several of the tabs. Couldn't withstand my younger self!
There are not a lot of figures where the actionfeature is as important as with MEKANEK.

I disagree. I have both and both are quite good. if you take out emotional nostalgia, in most respects actually better than the originals.
I wish they wouldn't have painted the blue on the neck as well for the same reason. I bought multiple ground rippers and was disappointed.

Hello, I believe Mekaneck came out earlier in the line, when they were still trying to make as many new figures as they could with the smallest budget possible, while Rattlor came out later when all the figures had new molds and more expensive features. So I think Mekaneck was in fact a pretty creative way of giving the character a new action feature with the littlest retooling possible. Ciao

I often find myself cancelling BBTS pre-orders after I find something at retail (usually Gamestop) before BBTS gets it in stock.

Is it compatible with classics figures?
I bought one of these sets specifically to test that. It's a bit of a tight fit, requires a bit of contortion, and knee-bending, and works better with some figures than with others. But it's JUST about doable, at least with a few of the figures I tried out. Ram Man, not so much.
Too bad they didn't include two or three different lengths or do like you said and make them stackable.
How odd. All that talk of missing action features, yet you didn't even try and demonstrate the Ground Ripper's "real racing action" feature. Was it so underwhelming that you completely forgot about it even being mentioned on the packaging? 🤔

The adult collectors need to stop crying about missing action features. Origins was never intended to be replicas, and I'm not sure why so many can't understand that. If you want the gimmicks so much, just get vintage.

Until I saw this in store last week, I didn’t notice the resemblance to the Sky Sled head. Now I kinda want to go back and grab another Sky Sled , paint it green, and two of these, paint one blue.
As for the action feature in his neck, what about an extended neck piece that has an extending feature? No need for a new torso mold, as the feature is contained within the extra neck piece. I do agree the blue collar ruins it…unless you have more articulation points, so the collar would be the elbow bend joint of his extensions.
i want him by himself. I dont care about the vehicles. The only line I care about vehicles is GIJOE . Now if i want him i have to pay this jacked up price for nothing.
never owned this i like it tho shame the fun feature of rip chord missing but its a cheap line never had meckaneck either looks very kirby inspired shame dont get 2 neck pieces like classics
Enh, I had the original Road Ripper, and to be honest, the speed was great, but that big heavy central flywheel made the vehicle wobble and flop about as it sped along, and it looked ridiculous. Plus, if you got it going fast enough, a crash could cause damage -- either to the toy, to whatever it crashed into, or both.
I really like how smoothly this version rolls, though.

All these Origins releases that have honored the original nostalgic action features so far, but this one gets derped.

I really dislike the pull apart design. I was looking forward to letting my nephews play with my original figs, but these new designs have taught them to pull the figs apart.
Why is it so hard to do the actual feature? This is just lazy.
Both action features would have been pretty easy to implement, they've cut them out to save money: this way Mekaneck uses an almost entirely recicled mold and the road ripper doesn't require as much assembly time (or metal parts) in the factory. Mattel failed to hook on new fans to the line, so it's losing grounds and they have to cheapen the production to keep it running. Ciao
And both action features were terrible in the original line so what you call lazy is just good solid design. They are both better then the originals.
I too am happy that it is done without the action feature. I always thought poor mech a neck got the raw deal for action features as he could only extend his neck sideways.
Been waiting for this release..... and now I'm disappointed.
Taking away the action features of both figures just seems lazy to me.
I guess I'll be looking for original figurines.

I fully agree. The action features were the entire distinction of many figures in the vintage line. Snout Spout? Mosquitor? Ram Man? All their gimmicks got Origins updates, at deluxe price tags.
Neck attachments feel like a cop out. If nothing else, the extending mechanism could have kept a ball joint up top, to turn his head. Problem solved.
I don't like the extra head, it looks ugly.
This is probably my least favorite release in this line. These two toys were probably two of my most favorite of the originals and they neutered them both. Very, very disappointing.

That neck sucks so much. I am glad that i am gonna save some money and forget that figure.
You see, and I feel the opposite: I don’t really mind that the rip-cord feature was removed from the Ground Ripper because it moves just fine without it (I also don’t remember always using it that often with the vintage vehicle), but Mekaneck is lacking without the actual ability to extend his neck. My issue is that Mattel has had at least 3 years to come up with a way to do it that wouldn’t have sacrificed from the posability of the figure. Yes, the vintage figure turned the waist to extend the neck…so why couldn’t they incorporate some sort of retractable extender within the body itself that pops out with the press of a button and clicks back into place when you push it down or something? The head could still be popped off the top and moved around. I’m no engineer, but this seems like something they could have tried tooling into a deluxe figure. But nope…let’s just do it exactly the same way we did it with Classics 10 years ago… 🫤
When I pose him with the neck extension installed, I must twist his waist. I can't help it. I have to pose him like a vintage Mekaneck with his head up. I did this in 1985, I did this in 2003, and Im doing it again now. Lol.
