      I live in Michigan, when should I aerate? I'd read some articles where people say to aerate ONLY in the fall, and then others that say to do it both in the spring and summer. What are your thoughts? Below is a statement from an article I was reading.
      While some companies will recommend aeration in both spring and fall, for most lawns in the neighborhoods we service, we generally recommend a single round of aeration done in the fall. While there are some benefits to spring aeration, there are also some drawbacks. In spring, weeds are just beginning to proliferate. By aerating in the spring, you are creating space for your lawn’s root system to expand, but you are also clearing spots where unwanted weeds can slip in as well

    OK buddy, thanks A LOT. I went nut like you. Went to the depot, rent me a professional aerator, bought several bags of milo and Scott's seeds. I threw her down like there's no tomorrow. So far I have gotten 17k steps. Completed the job in 3 hours. Returned the aerator back to the depot. Really heavy putting back on the bed of the truck. My wife almost threw her back. But luckily I had a 4x4 that helped as a bridge. Word of advice for everyone, buy two 2x6 x 8 feet and use as bridge to your truck. This thing is a beast. But LCN, said all that, I have saved money doing myself. Thanks for the video.

    Hi. My lawn has a 20ft by 20ft spot that is very dry as it is full sun and highest spot on the lawn. I am able to easily get down to about 2-3in and then it’s hard and possibly clay. Grass dies by end of summer unless i water everyday. My plan ... put down Liquid Aerating Soil Loosener- Aerator Soil Conditioner to make soil softer, core aerate, overseed and top dress with soil 1 week after, then right after core aeration add milorganite mixed with The Andersons Organic Humic DG. Thoughts?

  • @ilyakol
    @ilyakol 5 років тому

    Thank you! This video is a great help. I'm finishing the first summer in my new home (new construction) and my lawn is not where I wanted it to be.
    My plan is as follows:
    1) Aerate (the fill in this development is VERY sandy - many of us moving into the development aren't happy)
    2) Put down 25LB (I have 13k sqft of lawn) of SS5000 Sunny Mixture
    3) I have a half bag of Sulfate of Potash, put that down (should I get another and do 1.5 bags?)
    4) Put down Milorganite
    5) Water like its my job
    6) Enjoy my lawn next year?
    Any concerns or tips?
    For some background, I did the following this year:
    1) Late April - 2 bags of Pre-M 0-0-8 and GrubEx (1 big bag, 1 small bag)
    2) Early May - 1.5 bags of Sulfate of Potash, 2 bags of Milorganite
    3) June - 1.5 bags of Sulfate of Potash

    Hey great work on the lawns I had a quick question for you so it's the last weekend of September I dethatch the lawn aerated the lawn then over top of the lawn I added a three mix which is topsoil peat moss and mushroom fertilizer. I had grubs in the lawn so I added a grub killer which have to be watered in after I watered it the three mix got wet and I couldn't rake it underneath the grass is this going to cause my grass to die or will it come back to life with a top soil mix on top of it

    • @bloodbatteries4797

      It will be fine but stay away from peat Moss on your grass it's acidic you want your soil ph around 6.0- 7.0 ....put lime pellets down raises the ph in the soil ......grass seed I recommend rye grass and Kentucky bluegrass midnight granite or wildhorse kbg or last you live in deep south then you'll have to go with tall fescue kentucky 31

    I have a very similar situation to this. I bought a new construction home in the spring and its my first home so I'm not really knowledgeable on lawn care but I am willing and eager to learn. My lot is ~6000 sqft and a lot of it looks like the front area of this house. I'm in PA Philly area so temps are already down and I think I'm probably too late to do much this Fall. This video series was already so helpful and motivating but it has also raised more questions for me. Should I aerate the soil and use a traditional spreader like you guys did or should I use a slit seeder to overseed or should I use both? Is it too late in the game to do anything this year? Should I wait until next Fall to do this or should I start in the Spring? I feel there are so many questions and I just need a little help to get started.

    I never saw the end product of this project lawn...in this video its looking much like a lawn that I seeded on June 1st up here in South Dakota. Where can I view the end result video??

    Here in VA, we'll need to wait until the hurricane passes before seeding? I (obviously) missed seeding last week. What's the seeding effect on a saturated (ie post hurricane) ground?

    Stupid question but can I use a thatch rake, use a liquid aeration, over seed and use fertilizer all the in same day or do I need to stretch it all out? Thanks!

    Odd question i was doing some read about a place in maine that picked up waste from a treatment plant used it i there fields and now a bad chemical is showing in the cows milk . Wonder what they are going to find in this fertiler

    So, if your going to put fertilizer down for the winter, I take it you're using high phosphorus to feed the roots cause you don't want extra nitrogen in the winter?

    Should I water the grass the night before I aerate it?

  • @michelegibbens

    I did all of this over over Labor Day weekend (Saturday). It has been a little over a week and my existing grass is very tall even though I mowed short before. Should I still try to wait 3 weeks to mow or mow early? Some of my new grass is already 2+ inches also.

    Great job LCN ! One question though... would it be necessary to drop hay on the seed so the birds won't interfere ? Thanks - First Tim Rookie :)

    Fall Aeration vs De-Thatching/Scarifying? I bought the Sunjoe De-Thatcher/Scarifier this season and used it instead of core aeriation. The Sunjoe really picked up a lot of debris and was rather impressed with the end results. Obviously the Sunjoe does NOT do the same physical/mechanical job of a core aerator. My question is this..can one use a De-Thatcher/Scarifier instead of a core aerator? What are the Pros/Cons of this?

    I know you mentioned not worrying about killing off the weeds, but what about mature crabgrass? I have mature crabgrass with tons of seeds. Would aeration worsen the problem by sending the seeds into the dirt? Should I just skip aeration and overseed (TTTF) on established lawn? Thanks in advance and thank you for the videos!

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  6 років тому

      if you have mature crabgrass you will have a problem next year no matter what - but you can control that with pre-emergents in spring. If you have bad crabgrass it just means you may need to poke more holes - or cut it down lower in those sections.
