This is why I really love GCN. They could have scraped the video, edited out the mistakes, but they did not. Ollie, thank you. This is real instruction. A real-world video. And nice paint effect.
30 years ago I painted two frames. Can of Ale crit bike, and a Truk mtn bike (lugged and bonded). The Trek currently lives with my daughter at Ohio State University. It was raced and has been beat to hell. There is no original component on it, but those lugs are just as tight as a Brit in a vinegar bath. For this next part think old style quill stem. I made 2 so that I could hang 1 frame whilst painting the next. To hold the frame in the stand, and hit every spot, cut a length of pipe, slightly less than the I.D. of the seat post, about 10 inch/25.4 cm length. Then cut each pipe 2 inch from one end. I cut at the same bias as a quill stem. Now you will have 2 nuts that fit inside the pipes, threaded onto a steel rod, which has been fired, bent 90 degree to form a handle, fired again, toss in cold water to re-temper. The nuts are epoxied, or welded, at either end of the pipe. Violin! 😂(merican humour), you have an interior seat post clamp, clamped onto your bike stand. Quite maneuverable. I still have mine. You can use an old seat post, but you still have to cut it and all. With this method you can cover the entire frame with the paint. Hey Park, (love you folks, and the repair vids) I have no patent, but sure would love a new CF, CX bike. I'm 62 and my aluminium Fuji is beating the hell out of me. Ha, aluminium gets the final laugh! Oval tube? Get creative. Just remember for the best job you have to go inside...like, well umm, Brits are polite and all so I will leave it there. Peace!
Another way to create the effect is to use a plastic grocery bag or newspaper paper crumpled up and dabbing the contrast paint while it’s still wet. Looks the red and silver looks awesome!
Nice job Ollie! Can you now put your chemistry degree to further use by anodising a titanium frame different colours? I believe you can do so by using different voltages. I am sure Moots will have a spare frame lying about. If it turns out crap, you can always paint it for the third one in the series.
Martin from ETOE also made a very good video about painting the ice effect. If you want a tutorial from a pro painter, feel free to check out his channel ✌️
As I kid I accidentally resprayed the boot of my dads car while respraying a mountain bike frame outdoors. Taking 1000grit to his car was pretty scary, but it polished out fine and he never found out :-0
Hahaha, love the way you've decided to wrap the stand beforehand. We do indeed learn from our mistakes. Or in your case, receive a barrage of comments from disgruntled viewers.
DIY spray booth outside? What about a frame tent with the front ommitted. Open face down wind of course. That would shelter the job, would it be ventilated enough? Or a garage near an open door? Obviously Feb in the UK is not ideal for temperature, so be patient and pick your time, warm enough without being wet.
When you pour your heart and soul into to a project - only to find out that your best mate Chuck starts to get picky about voting it a super nice and is it a contender for the bike vault bike of the week?
Ollie, did you do in your living room???😱…I’m painting my bike with some other effects, one of them is using the water decals to paint the inside part of the fork with photos of Pantani 🤩
Couldn't you have but a cheap alloy seat post in and used a normal bike stand .... May be wrapped in paper to stop painting stand? ... Most will alway pivoting ?
I've seen other DIYs on UA-cam as I plan to do the same. I've noticed 3 key differences which may have made their's turn out better (other than experience): - I haven't seen any apply a laquer between the base coat and the crystals and they don't roughen up before applying the crystals. I don't think the roughening is necessary if the crystal liquid is mixed right as it already has the surface tension remover within. In fact, the rough surface seems to me like it impedes the propagation of the crystals. - Many thinned their top coats so that it contours the crystals better; - I feel the application of crystal liquid was insufficient from what we could see, probably aggravated by the roughened surface; - Probably better controlled environments in their cases. What would you do differently if trying again? Thanks
Nice work Ollie that Red is amazing - best of all being able to change half way through to achieve a beautiful bike. What are you planning to do to it? Being hanging on this video for weeks. I started stripping my bike a few before the first video and this has given me a kick to finish mine.
@@gcntech Awesome bike as a commuter - it will be the talking point of the office. As a commuter it probably doesn’t need to have the last tech, just gear that’s reliable for the every day man aka Ollie’s Watt Legs
Just curious, you guys are a professional media production group, why not just table this project/video shoot until it's warmer? Why fight the conditions and risk messing it up? Not because of the fact that you mess it up, but why struggle? Wind/cold, not good for spray paint. Make life easier! Turned out decent though, impressive.
Probably the only time they can schedule it. We're already now in race season and that is priority in the warm months as this is ultimately a show based on product placement.
Kid had nearly the same paint job on a '90s discount store bike. We called it crackle paint. Wondering how the manufacturer could have done it and equipped a geared bike for less than $70.
It's not quite the same effect, the crackles are smaller and more even rather than looking like ice crystals. Its just a paint you shoot on and it shrinks and cracks as it dries so there isn't the intermediate matting/chemical crystal mask or the polishing with scotchbrite stages. The only real trick with crackle is putting the paint down wet enough to get the effect to happen without getting runs. Definitely easier and can look great if you pick good colours.
Ollie, pls don't take it too personal but there was so much crap going on in those two videos. A bit of research would have been good. This comes from no pro but from somebody who tried, errored and succeeded in painting a couple of frames with spraycans. So this is my set-up 1) you never ever tuch the frame after prepping it with bare hands. alwways use gloves so you don't get grease (the one your skin produces) on the frame 2) putting up a proper paint booth is no rocket science. take plastik sheeting, the one painters use and cover a proper space e.g. in your garage, carport, garden shed, nothing fancy needed besides light. you have to keep your area dust -free 3) wear a proper mask, one the covers nose and mouth and filters any solvent vapors and also dust. the one your wearing is as good as nothing. Those masks don't cost a fortunde (see 3M or similar). also lint free garments or complete cover up with Onsie as used by painters 4) paint in the cans and on the bike need a temperature around 20C to cure, might not spray in autumn or winter in that case unless you can heat your shed 5) take an old bikestand and a broom handle. Clamp broom in stand, slide steerer tube of bike over broom. turn around by holding the bottom bracket left an right (do not touch any other part of the frame) turn bike around and slide it over agian. you can see and reach all sides of the frame properly
6) Spray in long, swishimg motion. From one tube end to the other. Same pressure, same distance to the tube: pffffffffffft. It's not a mural where you can go pftpftpft. You want an even surface ;-) I love repainting my bikes, better than NBD. So far I tried out montana gold, specialistpaint (the brand Ollie uses) and duplicolor. Montana is cheaper and available in almost every paint store. Good for practicing. The best colorcoverage so gar are specialistpaints. Amazing colors, great coverage bit difficult to decide which one to choose. Better have more bike to paint in that case. The best clearcoat product so far is from colormatik 2K.
I'm all about diy, but there's a few things done wrong here that should be avoided. - Spraying outside in the open is a big no, not just because of the wind as mentioned, but also any particles or dust floating around will stick to the new paint and ruin your finish, you don't need a fancy spray booth, a few cardboard boxes can make a good solution. - Surgical masks are NOT good for spray paint, you need a mask with proper filters not what Ollie is wearing in the video, that's just dangerous for your lungs - Do not sand the frame inside your house without a filter or vacuum to catch the particles, the little particles will float everywhere in your house including your lungs
Too many sycophants on here. Own up - that looks terrible. And what's with the red lighting, it's a dead give away that you weren't happy with it yourself. I realise that a duff episode doesn't come along very often on this channel, but this shouldn't have slipped through 😔 You could do a part 3 though, showing a proper job after a few off-camera practices 😉
to be honest, it looks terrible, as if it’s just a scratched frame, I recently painted it in a chameleon color, but with jambs, but at least it looks prettier) if you are interested, come on in, I have this video
Jesus... I can´t point out what´s more cringe worthy: - Ollie´s frustation, getting DIY "Ice Effect" series done and gone. Or, -People in the comments cheering for a scratched nd lacquered frameset.
What other DIY upgrade projects would you like to see us do on the channel? 👇
I think we should first discuss about the meaning of the word "upgrade"🤣
Custom painting Road helmets.
How about retro modern build? One with friction shifting, 650b wheels with big clearances and rim brakes 😀
Gt outpost paint from 1992 or it maybe 1991

Ollies mistakes, our gains. Thanks Ollie for this video series and your awesome honesty. Love the outcome. Great looking frame!!
Great effort Ollie!, painting at home is really challenging, temperature, dust, humidity, patience, not rushing ect.incredibly skilled job!.
😍It looks so good, and you probably love the frame more knowing how much effort you put into it.
Ollie is the Walter White of GCN. Turning his chemistry degree to manufacturing ice ... effect.
One of the best comments I have ever found in the GCN comment sections 😂 love your creativity!
This looks amazing!!! Good job Ollie. One of the perks of this frame design is that it ages well. All the scratches would almost be camoflauged.
Thanks Ollie and crew....cheers!

Honestly going with silver and red was a good choice just to stay with the main cervelo color scheme

random but possibly useful factoid: American 600grit is totally different to European 600, you can google it and find the table pretty easily.
There may or may not have been a similar incident in the making of this video! 🙊
Nice job, Ollie! Looks good.
Finally the chemist is doing chemistry ⚗🧪🎨🖌
Ollie loves it when he gets to do chemistry stuff! Did you see his ceramic coatings video? 👉 ua-cam.com/video/ht3u70Vvh0g/v-deo.html

Next time, get a 2K clear coat for the final layer. Ik will be much more durable than normal lacquer.
Great result! Next time try hammered Hammerite with brush on a steel frame, and this isn't a joke.
When you pour your heart and soul into to a project - only to find out that your best mate Chuck starts to get picky about voting it a super nice and is it a contender for the bike vault bike of the week?
Chuck would never do such a thing! 😉
Protecting the bike stand now. Just to stave off Alex’s wrath
Those paint runs on the fork is burning killing me
Making 🧊effect look 🔥🔥
Sweet.

it looks vintage, pretty cool tho.

Ollie wants ice-effect, but outside is . . . too cold? Botch . . . it snow use!
Moral of the story, trust a pro
Ollie either lives alone or has a very understanding partner to allow him to sand a frame at the dining room table.

The crystals create a rough surface and will make cleaning and waxing much more difficult.

Am I the only one to notice the irony in Ollie saying it was too cold outside to apply "ice effect"? LOL
😂
As they says in Amsterdam : Homo sapiens non urinat in ventum
Nice video bro, and nice bike, here in Spain, there is a chanel, they paint with spray cans and shows diferent techniques.
Evocolors they are called
Sooooo long process ollie! How many times did u try that out? Its look vrey nice. Good to know everyone can do that at home...... Cheers
nice job ollie! i wonder if you can put that on over a powder coat?

Great tutorial but on a phone it just looks like a scratchy red paint job.
Does on my 43” TV too!
Id remove the close up portions of this video 😬
Too cold for ice effect 🤔
need to do it on a carbon frame :\
Ice effect doesn't work in the cold? Oh the irony!
for proper tutorials on how to paint frames watch ETOE's channel
That effect just looks like a scratched up frame. Not seeing the “ice”. Maybe it doesn’t come through the camera well.
I must be weird. I think the marble, ice, plastic wrap paint jobs look terrible.
is that Ollie Bridgewater? #uaetour
Just looks like it's been scratched up
So if you scratch the frame you won’t notice???
