Stuff Smith is the best jazz violenist ever.. every note he hits fits pefectly with the progression, has perfect intonation and SCREAMS like no other jazz/swing violinst. I've heard Venuti, Grappeli, Svend, Gimble, Turney, etc.... none of them play jazz/swing fiddle like him. Black people INVENTED jazz/swing. No wonder he sounds so much better. And just listen to that vibrato of his.. perfect swing vibrato.. doesn't sound classic violiny. I've read that Stuff Smith tried to emulate the sound of a swing horn with fiddle.. and it does sound more like a horn than any other jazz/swing violinist I've heard. Stuff sounds best the way swing fiddle is played because it sounds like swing, not violinist trying to play swing. Joe Holley (of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys) is also one of my most favorite swing fiddlers, and Holley's idol was Stuff Smith.. sounds very similar to Stuff.
