Brother ScanNCut Tips & Tricks - Cutting Patterned Paper - Birthday Bonanza
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- In this tutorial, you will learn how to cut out patterned paper using your Brother Scan and Cut CM350. The paper we are using for these examples is the Birthday Bonanza designer series paper by Stampin’ Up! It is part of the 2020 Mini Catalog. To cut out the patterns, I scanned in the paper and then selected a specific area. I shared tips and tricks on ignoring object size to removing unwanted parts, and how to add an outline distance. I used Direct Cut, an Outline Distance of 0.04", and a blade depth of 3 for cutting out the Birthday Bonanza dsp. After cutting out the toucans, I shared my "pencil trick" for enclosing in spaces so on the koalas. This trick is needed whenever you don't have a well defined line enclosing your image. We help the ScanNCut 2 recognize images by enclosing them first. An outline distance of 0.04" was added to the koalas prior to cutting them out with a blade depth of 3. I shared several of my projects I created using the the Birthday Bonanza Suite and the embellishments cut out from the ScanNCut. The 2020 Mini Catalog launched on January 3rd. Love the tags. They are so cute. The tag die is really cool in that Birthday bundle.
I know, right. I love the sticking on the die. I have been cutting out a lot of them at once and then decorating them later. They are so good to have and the die works for ANY occasion. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
You are a fabulous teacher and so easy to listen to...still learning before I buy...lol
Awww thanks Kathlene. I appreciate that. I think it is good you are doing your research. I have tutorials on 3 different models on this channel. I mostly use the CM350 and the SDX125.
I just got my dsp, and you sure help it , to cut it ♥️thanks my friend ♥️♥️♥️stay healthy ♥️
Thanks for finding one of my older videos and showing it some love. I am curious to see if the Bonanza Buddies make it into the Annual Catalog. No matter what, they will be around for a few more weeks.
Hi Kimberly, Thanks again for a great tut, your projects are lovely, Cheers Anna.
Thanks Anna, I'm glad you like this. My favorite from the mini!
So very cute! What a great job.
Thanks Deborah, this is such a fun suite of products.
Thank you for showing us how to do this! I got my DX for Christmas and have been watching videos to learn before I attempt cutting anything!
Glad I could help Sandy. The best way to learn is by doing so I hope the next time you watch one of my tutorials, you follow along with whichever materials you have.
Thank you again for all you do for us all. Your videos are always great, informative and spot on it. ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I appreciate your comment. I strive to make each lesson easy to understand and follow along with. Thanks for watching.
Love your instructions ❤️❤️
Thank you Carolyn! Just saw your comment so it is nice to see the Bonanza Buddies are still getting some love.

I was wondering where you were Frenchie. Glad to have you back and I hope these cuties made you smile and are helping you recover. Hope you are back to crafting soon.
Great tips! Thanks! Cute project!
I'm glad you liked my projects. I will keep the tips rolling along. So much fun!
This paper collection is so cute and absolutely love your tutorials - so informative - thank you!!
Sorry that your comment got overlooked Cheryl. I appreciate each and every view. I am loving this cute suite which has come in handy a lot.
Thank you! Your videos are so helpful for me. I am very new to using my Scan and Cut and you make me want to try. Hugs and blessings.
Marji, thanks for watching. I have loads of video tutorials on my web site. Here is a ScanNCut playlist to scroll though so you can see the endless possibilities of this crafty machine. ua-cam.com/play/PLQq1-zAm_mlpA3MyqI4DbKwGZlI4mZnAY.html
I love this video. Can you do more videos using this machine. Like showing from start to finish how to cut out stamped images? Tfs! ❤😘 oh also do a video on the difference on the 3 machines. Wich one is best?
Hi Traci, I always show start to finish how to cut out stamped images using the ScanNCut. Below are a few tutorials on the topic. I have also done hundreds of videos on the CM350 and CM300 because I have had them longer. I have compared them in the past. There are reviews of all of the machines in my "fleet" on my channel. For the most part, you can only get the SDX series. I keep making tutorials on the CM350 because I want to support all of my loyal viewers who have that machine and still want to learn new things to do with it. Thanks for watching. ua-cam.com/video/EGGmnJwQS_w/v-deo.html
Papered Chef Great Thank you!
Love it when you used this machine.....cute projects by the way.
I like to change it up and keep viewers on their toes. Just kidding. Whichever machine from my "fleet" which is doing the best job at the time gets to be the star of the show.
I'm so glad I found you through someone on FB. Your tutorials are the best - very clearly explained and demonstrated. Thank you.
Thanks so much Cindy. I really appreciate it. Here is one of my many playlists so that you can poke around. There are hundreds of tutorials on my channel. Glad you are watching. ua-cam.com/video/EGGmnJwQS_w/v-deo.html
So happy that I found you! Thanks for the vide, 💕😊
I'm happy you found me too Kimberly. I appreciate you comment. Took me a while to respond because UA-cam decided to move a lot of comments into a review section that I didn't see until now.
I love this. Thank you. I am interested in how to get rid of all the little marks you don't want to cut. I have a Brother Scan and Cut 2. I will be watching this a few more times. Thanks for your help.
Hi Linda, there are several ways to get rid of them which I cover in most of my videos on cutting out stamped images. First, you can Ignore Object Size so that they will not be selected. You can also go into the Editing mode (box with little shapes) and select each item and put it in the Trash. These tutorials should help you. ua-cam.com/video/EGGmnJwQS_w/v-deo.html
So adorable 😍. Great video
Thanks Kimberly. I appreciate your comment.
🎉🎂🎈
Thanks! I appreciate it. This is a fun celebration set.
You’re amazing! Thanks for the helpful and awesome tutorial.
Just found your comment today Jennifer. Thanks for being so positive and supportive. I'm glad you liked it. I'll keep them coming.
thank you very much soooo good explained.
You are very welcome. I am glad you liked my tutorial. This designer series paper is super cute. Thanks for watching.
Great instructions...thank you! ❤️
You are very welcome Becca. Glad I could help. Hope you check out my other tutorials as well.
wow...nice...tfs
Thanks Maria, I am glad that you like this. You can't go wrong with paper this cute.
Another great tutorial! Are you in Australia? Also could you tell me the difference between the 1000 scan and cut and the 1200 as I’m getting confused, Thankyou so much!!
Thanks Carmen. I'm not in Australia. I found this nice comparison chart which will help you. Looks like you have to pay more for more designs. www.brother.com.au/en/products/all-scanncuts/scanncuts
Another great tutorial, but I have a question for you. Can you scan to cut patterned paper using Canvas Workspace, and if so, how? I find it incredibly hard to work on the tiny screen that is on the Scan N Cut. Old eyes.
Thanks Patricia, If you use Scan to Cut Data, then you can save that data to Canvas Workspace instead of to the machine. Then, it is easier to delete unwanted bits, add layers, etc. It is a lot of extra work and for most things, you will want to use Direct Cut because nothing is stored and you are just done. No extra files or data hanging about.
These are some really cute papers. I'll have to go out and buy the paper pack. I just love your tutorials....always informative. Do you have a tutorial out there telling how to convert an SVG file so it can be put on a memory stick and loaded to the scan n cut. I just bought a SVG pack from Scrapbooking.com to support the Red Cross for Australia fires and they have some really nice things. If not I'll go ahead and see if I can find something on the conversion in YT. TFS all your knowledge !
Debbie, there are a lot of things I cover in my online courses as we do detailed projects that I don't cover on UA-cam. I think working with SVGs is mostly in my courses. You just have to import them into Canvas and then Wirelessly transfer them but sometimes Thanks for your comment. Stay turned because I'm always adding content to UA-cam.
really good..
Thanks Wendy! I appreciate your comment.
Hi you are so cool to watch I'm really interested in one of these Brother machines but I've never used any Machines so I'm wondering what would be a good one I'd like to do vinyl and paper I got a character I want to bring to life..thanks
Thanks for your comment Joey. It was held up in review for some reason and I didn't find it right away. The bottom line is that although I like the CM350 better because mine cuts out my stamped images cleaner, Brother seems to give the best support to their newer models and sometimes the other is not being sold. You would probably like the SDX better as most of my viewers do when they upgrade. I have and I recommend the SDX125. It has Autoblade, it is quiet, it has more built in patterns, you don't have to pay extra to make wireless work, it cuts thicker materials and scans at a higher resolution. There are also more features on the SDX models. Here are links to check out when you are ready to take the plunge.

Thank you so much
I so love these tips and tricks videos. Thank you.
Great! Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Hi! I just subbed - have a new DX. Can you tell me why you aren’t still using the DX for your most recant vids? I’m sure your vids might explain but like I said, I’m new :)
Hi Margaret, not all of my viewers and students can afford to upgrade to the SDX125. Many of my subscribers have watched me for years using their CM350 and I will not abandon them just because Brother came out with a newer model. I will continue to create tutorials for both the CM and SDX machines. I like different features on each. Here is a Playlist for the SDX125 you can check out. ua-cam.com/video/aDb-VOOYC8U/v-deo.html
Thank you, that was very helpful. I just bought a cm900 and when I scan anything using my standard mat, or light tack mat, it always has big grey areas over the scanned image. If I scan the same image using the scanning mat, it comes out ok. Am I doing something wrong? I want to cut out stickers, so using the scanning mat isn’t an option. I've tried scanning various sticker sheets and other pictures and they always have grey areas.
Sally, sorry for not responding sooner. Your comment went into review. It seems like it is scanning the shape of your paper rather than what is on the paper. Move your paper to another part of the mat. Sometimes I place tape on one end of the paper so it stops treating my paper like a rectangle instead of what is on it. Use Black & White recognition mode. If Direct Cut doesn't work, try Scan to Cut data. I hope you get it working.
So cute thank you hope you hurry and get well
It took over a week but I finally broke free of the bugger. Happy you are always watching Mary.
Tooo CUTE!!!
Thanks Lynn!
Very nice projects. Do you have measurements for your projects?
Hi Kathie, I didn't get to add the measurements to this tutorial. I did several tutorials on all of these items on my channel. The bookmarks are 5.5" by 2" and the larger tags are made with the die. The diaper fold for the tea was made with a 6" by 6" piece of dsp. Here is a tag treat tutorial which you can apply to any card stock and dsp. thepaperedchef.com/snowman-treats-let-it-snow
How often do you need to replace the cutting mat and the blades??
Kathlene, there is no set time. You just have to keep sharpening it with my foil trick and make it last. Depends on how much you use it. Here is a tutorial on the blades. ua-cam.com/video/tjuhKAsURIc/v-deo.html
What is the best scan and cut that is out there?
Lisa, I don't have the best machine out there. There are machines that cost double and triple what I paid and so it is not all about bells and whistles. In my opinion, I still like the CM350 better for cutting stamped images but the SDX has so many more features. I love my CM350 or ScanNCut2 because of its consistency and reliability over the years. If you are going to be cutting fabric, vinyl and all kinds of other materials, then you are better off with the SDX125 because of the Autoblade. You don't have to set the blade depth with the SDX models, they are not as noisy and you have so many features including a lot more editing that can be done right from the machine. Please use my links to purchase one even if you don't get the exact one in my link. The links only work for a certain about of time so if you put something in your Wish List and go back, my link is no longer active so please click on it again before you purchase something. It helps support my channel.

Kim , have you tried to but the heart DSP ? I’m having hard Time with it 😩
Hi Frenchie, I was thinking of cutting some out because I ordered it but then I broke down and purchased the punches. I love punches and the heart ones also coordinate with the new Pleased as Punch dsp and my I'll Bee Yours Paper Pumpkin kit. Therefore, I am not even going to attempt it when I have punches which are fast and easy. I will keep showing how to cut out the other dsp as I use it for projects.
Did I hear you say you get the mats cheap and buy them by the case? HOW? WHERE?
Nancy, I used to buy Cricut mats by the case and I have gone through over a case of ScanNCut mats but I don't know anywhere I can purchase them by the case. Not sure what I said but here is a link to where I get mats. I get the ones from the sewing section sometimes on Amazon which seems to be cheaper than the same thing from the Arts & Crafts section. amzn.to/2LqUzHY
I am looking into buying a scan and cut . I am completely bamboozoled by all the different machines . I would only use it to cut DSP or download from computer and cut items on paper/ card stock . Would someone be able to help me with some advice as to what machine would be best to start with as don’t want to spend lots of money on a machine that I would not need and wouldn’t use . I’m assuming that I could buy one of the earlier machines and then upgrade if I want to . Many thanks for any help you could offer .
Angela, your comment went into the "Held for Review" section. Sorry for not responding sooner. The bottom line is that although I like the CM350 better because mine cuts out my stamped images cleaner, Brother seems to give the best support to their newer models and sometimes the other is not being sold. Papered Chef many thanks for your advice , I wouldn’t know where it was best to start . I will definitely give the links you sent a good read through .once again many thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to help me, much appreciated x
If the CM350 is doing a better job, I Wonder if I made a mistake buying the Dx, this is my first time ever trying a Machine like this.
Kristine, each machine has a personality. My CM350 just so happens to cut out stamped images better than my SDX125. That doesn't mean that I made a mistake because there are loads of things the SDX does better. It is quiet, it has the Autoblade, it cuts thicker material, it has some extra built in patterns and it has a great layering feature you can use with built in patterns. As the saying goes: "Love the one you're with" and make the most of your SDX125. I use all of my machines all of the time and love them all. I just have a favorite, that is all. Kim
Thanks for this, I am wondering how we cut out those pesky lions! I can’t do it! Grrrr
Oh yes, the pencil trick really works. Thanks for watching Kimberly.
I am going to try this again. I have tried so many times to complete this with no successfulness. Have a wonderful day
Zabrenda, please don't give up. Let me know if it worked out for you. There is almost always a way to get something to cut out using tips and tricks.
Its helpful when you have been noting which machine you are using I have SNC2 and the instructions for the other machine new confuse me because I'm visual, a new user and I'm old. Lol
Ellen, I am also a visual learner which is another reason I like to create video tutorials. I am glad you find them useful. I like to show the CM350 model too because it is a little different and does a great job. Thanks for watching.
How come your not using your Dx?
I use my entire fleet of machines. This one is doing a better job right now so it gets to be in the video. I have a lot of requests for CM350 tutorials.
@@PaperedChef I love it! "Fleet of machines". They sound like Military Ships 🤣👌🏼
@@YehoodToob They work as hard as Military Ships. You should see my collection of manual die cutting machines. It is ridiculous!
Why did you not use your new DX?
Donna, I have a lot of requests for the CM350 and it is doing such a great job that I used it for my projects.
She has a lot of videos for the new machines.
