Love this. Thank you for this tutorial! I'd love to give it a go now after watching this. Please show us how you got that shaped acrylic board. Also if i had to cut the Neon wire in an angle (like you did in this video), would it have to be exactly on the cut point?
okay I live in the US, can you tell me what to type in to find some of the tinning cables over here? I don't quite understand what it is I'm looking for!
If it is a small sign we solder a cable with DC female connector to the end piece and power using a plug in adaptor, 12V. Alternatively, we connect a 12V transformer.
Yes it's fine, just try not to cut into the led chips. You can still solder it because you can cut into the silicone casing to "expose" the led strip inside. If you gently peel back the silicone to access the solder pads, you can solder your wires and then put the silicone tube back in place and glue any cuts you've made. If you're making an outdoor sign, we wouldn't recommend doing this unless you are 100% sure water cannot get through the silicone tube. Once you start practicing, it should become clearer!
That's great to hear; do check out our website - we supply sign makers with anything and everything required to make neon flex signs, and if you can't find the information or item you need; just get in touch!
You clip the neon flex into the channel until you reach the end point or join with another piece then mark the top of the neon flex then gently pull back out a couple of centimetres and cut. If you are cutting at an angle cut slightly proud to double check the angle then cut it down,
hey thanks very good video..i've been looking for a video for weeks where something like this is designes. Would be very happy about a design video in which you might make simple shapes like this heart or even text. Would be very very happy. Thanks
Thanks Bruno - great suggestion, we've just started making our videos and have lots of content planned all aimed at making the process easy for you; so keep an eye out on our channel!
You will require a 12v LED driver/Power supply to power it up which you can switch it on/off on the wall socket, or you could add an inline on/off switch or Wi-fi/Alexa plug.
When using the neon flex for external use, it's important to ensure all connections are fully waterproof. Glue is not a guaranteed reliable solution; we recommend using winged neon (www.ledsignsandlighting.co.uk/winged-neon-flex) which is push fit and does not need to be stuck down and doesn't require glue. You would need to route a channel into your acrylic back panel using an appropriate CNC cutter (see www.ledsignsandlighting.co.uk/winged-neon-flex-CNC-cutter). Alternatively you could use silicon to bond the neon. It is essential you make all the connections watertight, or better still, encase the sign in a clear acrylic box.
Hi Zodiac, we haven't tried those adhesives so can't comment, sorry! The reason we use the 2 part glue is because it bonds so quickly - in 10 seconds. There may be other products on the market that you can use, give them a go and let us know!
We use Adobe Illustrator to create our design and then send this to a fabricator (or CNC cutting provider) to cut a 5mm or 10mm thick acrylic back panel out to our design. They can router a channel out for you to stick the neon flex into (this will be shown in the next video), or you can use as template as in this video. You can also use PVC foam as a back panel. It is opaque and a cheaper alternative to acrylic. Hope that helps!
You can purchase it from our website www.ledsignsandlighting.co.uk or email us at sales@spectronled.co.uk with your requirements, for you information we deliver all over the world, but please check with us for cost of delivery, for oversea orders we normally use DHL or Fedex air freight service.
I am very excited to try some of this. I am in the US. Do you have a distributor here that I can purchase from? I cant seem to find some of these items here. Amazon too.
Yes, thank you, that's a great point. We would recommend you follow product guidance. The 8mm neon we use is flexible to 350 degrees and the 5mm can bend back on itself.
You can find them on our website here www.ledsignsandlighting.co.uk/Pre-soldered-cable, or contact us at sales@spectronled.co.uk and we can go through some options for you
Do you add a dimmer at the end? I find that these lights can sometimes be way too bright for some people and I imagine a dimmer knob or switch wouldn't be impossible (albeit a bit obtrusive).
We didn't to this one, but yes you can add a dimmer. The neon we use isn't the brightest on the market, as we find that the brightest neon is, like you say, overwhelmingly bright for constant use, and it uses more power. It is also produces more heat which over time damages the LEDs.
The thickness of the acrylic depends on the size of the sign. As this is a small size sign, we used 5mm thick acrylic. For larger signs we tend to use 10mm thick. For external signs, you can use the same thickness as for internal, or better to box the sign in to protect against rain and adverse weather conditions.
We've never tried gorilla super glue so not sure. To prevent overspill onto the acrylic we recommend you leave a vinyl template over the top of the sign

Hi Tanvir, we actually outsource our cut back panels, but I believe they use an XYZ CNC machine with a tungsten carbide cutter.
