I need to say this: you're getting better and better. You're not one of those blokes who try to be funny or popular in order to get as many likes possible. In my opinion your car revues are what any car revue should be: pros and cons when owning/driving or consider buying one. It's a simple as that. Thanks my man, I'm waiting for the next post. Peace from your neighbour country, The Netherlands/Amsterdam
Joey Storms Thank you for saying that. I appreciate your support. Happy new year! 😉
Typical-i just posted basically the same comment hehe
Review*
I sold mine a few weeks ago after having it for 7 years.
Incredible car, great character, YOU have to drive it, it won't save you if you mess up, which keeps it interesting.
Very very easy to get 500+ bhp out of them too
I have a great joke for you about the way you say the car's name:
- A blond is trying to make some pocket money doing odd jobs and goes house to house looking for work. Soon she gets to one door which is opened by a man and she asks him if he has any odd jobs she can do. Impressed by her enterprising nature he says, 'Sure - I need my porch painted round the back - you'll find paint and brushes in the garage, go ahead'
An hour later she is back at the fron t door, beaming. 'Did you get the job done?' he asks. 'Absolutely, she says, I painted it from top to bottom, and by the way, it's not a Porsche, it's a Ferrari'
👍this is funny
Here's a classic from a famous Kiwi comedian in the 80's we used to watch as kids: ua-cam.com/video/pzsXeYTgc-I/v-deo.html along these lines.
Great review by the way. A client of mine many years ago had a 2002 model of these with the custom licence plate MRTOSSER2U here in Australia.

I agree with your point about that feeling you get just sitting in a Porsche. My 2000 Boxster is obviously 20 years old now, but at that age and with almost 120k miles on the clock, the interior looks like new. It's the same with the driving experience; they just feel very solid, very planted, and (with older Porsches) have an analogue, tactile feel that communicates with you in a way few other cars do. It's a shame that people-at least purists-knock 996s as some kind of poor relation, but for us more normal adults, they represent great value. I'd just be worried about some knuckle-dragger keying it in a fit of inadequate bitter rage.
Priceless!! Your reaction to that first blast on the dual-carriageway had me in stitches (literally, as I've just had a hernia op!).
"Have I gone white.....I've gone all hot"!! Great stuff! This is exactly the sort of input that makes these reviews so watchable, and informative. Keep up the good work Matt.
Haha thanks for watching :)
great review...I bought a black 996 turbo from a main dealer (Silverstone) in 2013...these cars were in recession then and I haggled over a genuine 1 owner 15k mile car registered in 2004.... it was mint ....truly unmarked as new...I paid 35k knowing it was a steal.... I kept it until 2015 and regrettably had to sell to fund a project....I advertised the car in Autotrader at 7am for 40k no offers and by 10.30 that morning it had gone into a collection never to be seen again....an amazing car and so blisteringly fast for the time....its hard to believe the type of performance generated by a 991 GT2 RS on a road when the turbo would still see many of the so called supercars off today and it would achieve that without breaking down....such a strong powerful car....glad you liked it...
I've been driving my 996tt for almost 8 years now and in my honest opinion, it is dollar for dollar the best sports car in the world!
couldnt agree more. I've had one for 6 yrs, added larger turbos and ECU remap, 560 BHP and 600 ft lb of torque, not many cars can keep up with that. And everyday usability - an incredible car. Add a sports exhaust to improve sound, and buy a manual.
Manuel goes without saying on most cars that have it as an option.
Not at all, I've been driving my x50 tip for 7 years now, paddle shift ,left foot breaking, wot gear changes,3 gear kick down, never Will I buy another manual.
Paul woollock Is it normal to feel less g-force when doing some hard acceleration..? I’ve test driven one that’s on sale & was a bit disappointed with the power because a turbocharged engine should be able to opt out some g-force sensation.. Not a huge power difference compared to the naturally aspirated 996 Carrera.. Probably I could feel only 20% to 30% more power on the 996 Turbo.. Is that a normal thing to be honest..?
@@Rendezvous512 Hi, I can only speak for the tip, the acceleration is brutal, it kicks down to the right gear, for you, I wonder if there was something amiss with the car you drove.
Had my 996 turbo for 11 years now. Just put 2 new turbos and a kline exhaust on it and it sounds amazing compared to the standard exhaust.
What a stunning looking car, bizarrely the 996 is actually my favourite 911!
Impossible
spainter1985 not that bizarre, it’s my favourite as well.
It’s the best mix of old school rawness and modern usability. It’s a brilliant car.
Just a shame the GT3RS version still costs the same as a 2 bedroom house!
Prices have massively increased in the last 8 or 9 months. £10;000 cars are now very thin on the ground. The 996 is beginning to gather a popular status and prices are flying upwardly into mid 40s and late 50s for the Turbo model. Great review I am just a little in history again. My Dad talked me out of buying a £22000 low mileage Porsche Turbo 2 around 18 years ago 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️. Don’t always listen to your parents, do it most of the time but not all of the time.
Good piece. I happen to love the 996 twin turbo, particularly in manual and with the X50 factory performance upgrade. I do think they fit the term "Super car", more so than the Ferraris or Lamborghini models of that era. They have the power, performance and yet are trouble free daily drivers. Unlike the majority of their Italian competition
You're absolutely right! Porsche is Porsche and not the pretentious way of saying it with accent "e" and extra syllable. I must admit your reaction to the performance is priceless! Trying to hide it and not show, bit it SO shows!
I've owned one for 6 years now and it has been amazing all round car.

Nice video.... and you’re right, 911s aren’t generally considered “super cars”, but that’s not really the appeal to owners of them. 911s are high performing sports cars but are unique amongst the so called super car arena in that they can be driven daily and are reliable and practical. I like the car you have however the tiptronic box on it dulls down the performance a fair bit. The intro of PDK changed that in the later years. Great cars to run though and provided you change the oil regularly and don’t skimp on servicing, they will last forever....... no Ferrari can do what a Porsche can in that regard.
Nice to see a prime bit of Pork on the channel. Love these. 10 years ago these were changing hands for £25k, they're absolutely amazing, well engineered cars that you could keep for a decade and still not be bored. Wish I had bought one of these 10 years ago - Doh!
Isaac Maynard I bought one 5 years ago, a manual the sought after box, for £18k. Sold it 2yrs later for £28k. The manual is brutal, auto is quick. BUT.......second gear pop out, sticking turbo actuator (lower), spoiler that costs a grand when it won’t pop up. Discs n pads £1k. Awesome fun though.
@@ianjames3078
Now that is how it's done, Ian, that was a great deal . I bet you miss it from time to time though eh!
Isaac Maynard definitely not wrong there. I had a diagnosis which made me realise I needed to get on and do things......having a 911 turbo was one of those. Live for the day ❤️
I've always enjoyed your vids... Keep up the quality content.
Ghost Dog Cheers
Agreed just subscribed.
The 911 Turbo has always been the benchmark by which all other supercars are measured. All Porsche are clinical and very precise, that's the appeal, it's either something you like or don't.
Being clinical is an unfair criticism, the same thing can be said of McLaren and that's also a great car. The Porsche is so good, you just don't realise it.
Enjoyed the video, keep them coming.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video! I'd love to see a test of the E60 M5. I drove one with a manual 3 years ago and it's still in my memory. It's that full of character.
Naturally aspirated for me. Ran a 3.0 SC and a 3.2 Carrera for many years. Just brilliant and great fun. Wish I still had them.
Nice review with the trademark humour. Might have even lowered the odd blood pressure reading in the Rover 75/MG camp. We can but hope.
Mark Johnson Thanks! And good choice. Regarding the other stuff, I very much doubt it. They’ll be gathering their pitchforks as we speak 😂
Many years ago I had a wide body 911 3.2 Carrera cabriolet. Beautiful car, sold it for more than I paid and bought a house in Scotland with the proceeds
@@Dave-in-France Morning David, did similarly with my narrow bodied cars, both sold at good profit and moved to Cumbria.
Who needs Top Gear.. this guy is good. Informative and witty 👍🏼
Thanks!
Great review, those paddles are aftermarket, you get buttons with the tiptronic (which is made by Merc in these)
Manual convertible 997 S is my attainable dream car.
Always wondered what the 996 cab roof mechanism is like, someone doesnt feel like it's going to be as reliable as the 997, there's no real UA-cam content on it. The turbo does look badass
Had problems with mine
The 996 roof is identical to the 997s.
byronmills interesting, always thought the 997 roof integrates into the design better with the roof up
@@chrisogrady28 The main shell is identical - as are the majority of the mechanics. In reality the 997 is just a comprehensive face-lift of the 996 - with changes to the exterior panelwork and a much better quality interior a facia layout. I had a manual 996 turbo S cabrio 7years ago. A wonderful machine - but even at 6 or so years old at the time needed a fair amount of upkeep to keep it up to scratch. For all their fabled reputation for quality - there are some specific issues common to these turbos which bite you on the arse if your not prepared for them. One of them is to keep all the drain holes around the rear hood bin clear. If not water will penetrate deep in the the rear of the cabin and swamp out the ecus which are located beneath the rear seats.....
Haha your face when you booted it, classic.
Great vid as always Matt
Mick Repairs Cars 😂 It took me by surprise. The dangerous thing is that it quickly becomes addictive 😍
Great test drive, wish I had one on my drive.
Enjoy your in depth reviews.
Martyn Kersey Thanks. I’d love to have one in my garage too
I know what you mean by clinical feeling. Many years back I had one of the last 993 air cooled 911s. It was my dream car but I sold it after a year as it really only felt special when driving at 10 tenths. I bought a twin turbo supra after that which felt like a heap of junk after the quality of the 911 but that's another story!
Excellent video. Sharp comments, entertaining, humorous, and most importantly, accurate!
Bravo, not whiskey 😂
Your deft critique reinforces my love of this wonderful machine. Thanks
Christian Wells Thanks!
Love the Porsche `Turbo 996 and 997 and i personally would class them both as a super car
Great review as always. These even by today’s standards are such quick cars, seriously considered one before my Lexus ISF but as a second hand prospect the Lexus won me over with its bombproof reliability, plus the tail will play on demand.
Yes thats right. And the V8 noise :)
You said you were at 25k subs. Now it shows over 83k. That's a huge leap in a bit over a year. Well done!
I love your reviews.
Thanks for watching!
Sunroof is a nice option but the air con is good too.
Had mine for 3 years , manual full aero kit , for the money they are pretty much unbeatable, but buy with full history, they are fairly cheap to buy, but things can go wrong, if they do they can be very expensive, so much better than a 993 having owned both ‘, forget it’s not air cooled, who cares it’s all about the drive 👍
Turbo!! Having a good time with the High Peak Auto Video Library during tea break.
Would have the car in a heartbeat. Modified prefarably, widebody cars for the win :)
Thank you Matt, very much appreciated.
Haha thank you! Glad they entertain
You absolutely nailed the super car v sensible super car conundrum...1st world problems eh?...trouble with super cars that are rarely used is that when you do wish to take them out, they probably won't start and if they do start, you won't want to park it up and leave it out of sight.
My heart would say 458 Italia but my head would say R8 or 911/Cayman S...either way, chalk up another insightful review.
HORNET6 Haha yes first world problems. You’re right. It’s a tricky one. If you wake up on a sunny Sunday and you’re Ferrari is flat, I think your life is still going pretty well 😂
Oh well, ( 99% good comments throughout the year👌👌 with the occasional iffy one 😘 ) but all said and done, and at the end of the day>>>>> I still think you are a top-notch reviewer, and with over 32k subscribers in just over a year ( fantastic achievement ) I personally believe your channel will only grow from, strength to strength. All the very best for 2020 Matt and a happy and prosperous new year mate. Kindest Regards Steve.
Thanks Steve! Thank you for your support since the beginning. Happy new year to you too :)
Best car channel on the tube!! Keep it up mate love it
Thanks! Cheers for that :)
Pedals have the perfect spacing for heel toe driving.
The non turbo versions look abit plain compared to the turbo but I still love them. Can't really blame them for buying a 911
I'd have one in a heartbeat... if you can afford to run it and you want a future classic get one... not many 17 year old cars can keep that interior quality and performance....
I know... Its crazy to think its 17 years old.
The cows seemed to admire the Porsche (with a silent e) more than the lacklustre Rover.

Not too many 03's are gonna look that good. I was SO close to buying one when I bought my 06 XK years back n really wish I did because they keep their value n certain models go up which peevs me off n then people dont even drive em n just let them sit
Cheers...been waiting till christmas morning to watch this!!
Smiling now all day 😈😈
It's lovely and still looks good today and unlike any other super car you can park it in the street. It's all very well buying one but you have to have a few quid as it's the servicing and maintenance that costs a fortune.
Dan Druft Thats right although a standard Carrera would be much cheaper to maintain
@@HighPeakAutos Yes I suppose by the time it's that age you wouldn't want to pay a Porsche dealership mechanical prices as there are garages specialising in Porsche maintenance for half the price
Thats right :)
This 996 Turbo was my previous car which I part exchanged in October so qualified tot to clarify a few things. Had the car for 8 & 1/2 years and it was brilliant car! Now on my 3rd 911 so call me Porsche fanboy by all means!!
Car had stage 1 re-map with a Milltek exhaust so was running probably nearer 500bhp rather than the standard 420bhp, so it was pretty damn quick! Steering wheel conversion from buttons to paddles was custom job done by company in California. Much better drive with the paddle shift.
John stubbs This actual car? That’s interesting
@@HighPeakAutos Yes, this actual car!
John stubbs that’s a coincidence! I like the steering wheel conversion. Just out of curiosity, what did you replace it with?
@@HighPeakAutos 991.2 Carrera GTS - brilliant car!
Have to agree with you on pretty much all counts, although I have to admit to never having driven one. At £35k it's in the AM DB9 price range (something I did think about getting before my practical (read boring) brain kicked in and I bought a Discovery Sport). If I did decide to buy a sports car, of ANY variety, it would be the DB9. I could live with any issues, deal with any faults, just because of the looks. Bit like dating Cameron Diaz - high maintenance, but worth every penny.
04:55 and you clearly said "That's the thing with PorschEs". Well done cocker! Proces have gone up a bit since you made this video: oh well....
Porsche 911 of any kind is my dream car (a Singer Porsche would be unbelievable, but might look a bit odd parked on my narrow terrace drive) ......I could afford a used old boxster I suppose, but as you mentioned, repairing old super cars can get pricey. Ah well, I’ll just wait for my lotto win.
1:30. Just to be pedantic, the atmosphere comprises about 20% oxygen while water is 33% oxygen, so strictly speaking a water cooled 911 is cooled more by oxygen than the air cooled ones....! Haha, but I know what you mean. Another nice review.
If you blacken the rear indicatiors the looks improves by 110%
Suzumebachi I was thinking it missed out on the craze of clear indicators. Very 90s
I liked how you interspersed your commentary video with sort of still shots! Clever.
I didnt like the 996 but the turbo, GT2 and GT3 are the favourites.
The Mezger engined models 👍👍
I like the back...but I never thought the front was flared enough to match, it looks a bit weedy.
Still, in answer to your question: If you can, you should.
Buy one! Best value 'everyday supercars' on the market. DMS will upgrade the ECU so that it puts out around 540BHP. Not many cars will keep up with you. I've had mine for 6 yrs and its a treat to drive every time. Don't buy the cheapest, buy the best though, and of course full history. If the sound doesnt excite, get the sports exhaust by Porsche. Absolutely brilliant car, I've driven the later 977 turbo and prefer mine, esp the looks. Prettiest 911 every made, despite the head-lights, which I actually really like, and eventually will make the 996 Turbo even more collectable.
I think you're right there regarding collectability. Thanks for watching :)
Thank goodness for the Chapel-en-le-Frith bypass!!
yes go for it if it's in fine fettle, or won't cost a mint to bring up to saleable standard. I guess you need to make profit on it. Prefer one of a different colour. The one to go for is the 930 made between 1975 and 1989. Aquisition price may be high though
Thanks for the review. Pls. try also 360 or even 355 with manual gearbox, You'll feel the difference. Ferraris are special.
The turbo dors have the 'fried egg' headlights.
The 996tt is a proper car through and through
I don’t normally approve of smirking in cars...... but in this case your smirk says it all as you floor the turbo.
Great video Matt .... and all those extras .... great value!
Cheers
Mike
haha exactly!
Porsche 911 996 Turbo hard to ignore a dream machine.
Nice to see you smile Matt.........but then, who wouldn't driving that!! I've always hated 911's, but I too like the wider bodied Turbo👍
Its looks great as the wide body turbo
You should be hosting top gear :)
Rover 75 to a 996 in a week. Awesome. You hit a nerve with the 75 though... replies still coming in about how good it is...
Haha I know. I've ruffled some feathers there with that one. To make matters worse the angry comments are coming from retirees with plenty of time of their hands to tell me are ignorant I am
High Peak Autos which tells me you’re on the right track! 😬
Another great video. I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now and I have to say your commentary is much smoother now than a few months ago. As others have said, keep up the good work and seasons greetings!
Thank you! Same to you :)
No. I shouldn't. It is too expensive, spends far too much gasoline than what I can afford, same for repair bills, and it does not have enough space. However .... You SHOULD DEFINITELY buy me one! 😬
I love the 911!
Gosh, a 996 Turbo! Have you upped the budget since arriving at 25,000 subscribers, Mr Goodwin?
Liked just because I can’t say “porsha” either
Haha good!
It's not "porsha" either, should be pronounced "Por-Shuh", with the emphasis on the "Por".
That`s the beauty of owning a Porche, stick a private plate on it ( and unless you're a Porsche expert ) nobody knows the age of it especially that model !!!!!! I thought it was about 3- 4 years old. Great video mate 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Exactly. They do have a timeless quality about them. Mainly because each generation looks so similar to the previous one :)
Concrats with 30K+ Subscribers !
I really like (any) Porscha because you cold drive it across Europe, and take a few laps against a Gallardo on the Nordschleife, en drive the same evening home in a comfortable and relexed way.
Try that with a Gallardo... depriciation and service bill's wil sky rocketing compared with a porsche.
Anton Kramer Thats true. And thanks!
996 models are the best 911 ever. Drive so much better than the air cooled versions and look very sleek and compact compared to the new versions which are too wide. Great value and creeping up in value. Get a 3.4 Carrera with no sunroof no traction control and in a dark colour. Just drive it!
Hard to believe that In those 17 years since, you can now buy an everyday saloon or hatch that has almost the same power and as good if not better performance, even if not the top speed.
I’d still own one in a heart beat though 😂 I’d probably rather have the 930 turbo though, a true “widow maker” 😂👍🏻
That’s progress for you 😉👍🏼 As much as I’d fancy a decent 996 Turbo, my stock 2018 MK7.5 GOLF R with 7 speed DSG comes to mind as a modern hot hatch contender. Currently about the same sort of money to buy as well (£35K ish) although the Golf R will depreciate like a lead balloon while the 996 T will keep on appreciating, eventually out of reach of mere mortals like myself 🤣
Auto Addict same, i have a 2016 RS3, although with only 750 built of that model I’m hoping eventually any depreciation will be go the other way as i will undoubtedly keep it as i have other cars.
Someone paid 52k for it when it was new as it has all the options on it, bar ceramic brakes and carbon pack and no hill hold of all things 😂 which was only an £80 option
Unfortunately i missed the boat several times when the 930 turbo was realistically own able, first time round i was too young second time round i didn’t have the spare money, now they are pretty unreachable price for a nice one
A relative owns a low mileage 997 turbo and it’s monumentally fast, so just have to admire that for now 😂👍🏻
yes 930
That's the right way to pronounce Porsche BTW. I reckon this isn't a supercar but it fits beautifully with the daily driver sportcar. Maybe not the Turbo but any other version. I'd use it to go to the office and back. It'd be a shame to keep it in a garage.
The problem with the pedals is only for the RHD models, as with all 911 s the LHD models have more space for the pedals
Great video and yes I want one, never really got the "Porsche thing" until I did a driving experience day years ago. I loved the 911 Turbo that I drove. Not sure if it was a 996 or 997. Didn't take that much notice of the front. But yes I would love to own one, but all things considered, I'll keep my SL.
I love the Porsche 911, ever since I saw the bad guys driving them in Michal Crawford's movie "Condorman" lol
Oooh Bettie!!
love the reaction on your face when you boot it on the bypass that was the same as mine the first time i drove one
martin gibson I was expecting it to be quick but it’s shockingly fast. It happens quicker than you can react 😂
@@HighPeakAutos sure does you soon realise its not a toy and have to have you're wits about you rather quickly i just love em
Was the same with me respect is required absolutely scary performance
I enjoyed your review. Evo magazine categorised it a super car back in the day winning evo car of the year in 2000. Rated 5 stars when that meant something. Turn the psm off and see if to too clinical then. I know two people who tried that and both crashed! They can be a beast when pushed hard and compared to modern 911s require respect. These cars hark from a different era of sports/super car where people really used them not had them parked in a garage all year depreciating £20k a year. This was a super car that you could use really every day, 2 year service intervals, etc. There plenty with 100k miles plus out there going strong. I have had one for 7 years and it’s a keeper despite the big bills! 👍
Hi Mate. Like the comment... Im thinking to dive in and get one... Manual Cabrio... What were the Bills like per year? More or less of course. Also... Long drive comfort? Cheers and thanks for the info if you have any. Stay safe
@@blackline66 I have kept mine serviced at the main dealer as it had full porsche history and keen to keep it. OCD for the service book staying perfect. I use a specialist for other repairs and do quite a lot myself. Over 9 years/23k miles I suspect it’s averaged £1.5k a year. In 2019 it cost me £6.5k, clutch, starter motor, air con condensers, rear tyres, 2020 I had a £1500 discs and pads bill. It is an old car and they can be expensive to run but it’s not depreciating, a new mini loses more than £2k a year. I do two big road trips a year , at least on in Europe and they are great for long distance, cruise control, Bose stereo, nice seats. Cruises down the autostrada at high speeds all day long. Never had any problems, will even do 27-29mpg on motorways. Could easily daily one.
@@9MAS Hi.. this a great reply many thanks. Confirms my feelings really. I can handle most of the bills, but will get the whole car checked with a Porsche specialist. Thanks again for the reply. Enjoy your car and stay safe. Cheers.
I've always found Porsche to be rather lacking "flamboyance" of an Aston Martin or a Ferrari too.
As for the reviews and analogies, I think they are getting better and better... reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson.
Keep up the good work.

Nice car great revue as usual, my best mate treated himself to a new four wheel drive model Porsche two years ago couldn't believe how comfortable it was and sedate at low speed. Dont ask me what model it was red😂 over 400hrspers😬 that thing was bike quick. He sold it through lack of use and he valued his licence.

Not the only 996 without the IMS bearing issue - the GT3 and the (very rare), GT2 also used the old bottom end so don’t suffer.
Ian Donkin Thats right but like you say, very rare
@@HighPeakAutos Did you say only 10% suffer from the issue?.
I'm just wondering, if most had the IMS setup, then wouldn't it just be a matter of time before it will suffer the same fate?.
Its my understanding that only certain engine numbers suffered with weak IMS but I could be wrong. I've never been that interested in them so I've not done my homework
High Peak Autos the IMS (intermediate shaft) issue ran on into the early 997’s, but was eradicated by the 997.2 models. IMS bearings was not the only issue; rear main seals were almost a consumable on early 996’s and they also suffered from the cylinder liners cracking, but this shouldn’t be a problem now. GT3’s weren’t that rare, but GT2’s definitely were. I’ll get my coat.

Michael That’s true. It’s probably a safe car to invest in. If the 996 Turbos go like the previous models the prices will rocket sooner or later
@@HighPeakAutos they are on their way to space as we watch this video!
They're already going up. I bought a 2004 turbo x50 (gt2 spec turbos etc) for $57k Canadian 3 years ago. Today i could sell it for close to $100k. It's been super reliable and I drive it almost daily
I checked, 6 for sale in Holland, starting at 50,000 Euro (530Hp), all Gearbox !But I'd rather buy a Cayman !
From a Rover to a Porsche 911, what a treat!!
Great another review.
Thanks for watching :)
Your reviews are excellent. Really hit the mark for the those of us who live in the real world
Thanks!
Another sound video, nice looking car but prefer that jaguar you had with the amazing interior. Keep the quality coming.
Thanks!
Never been a Porsche or should i say Por-sher fan. The only one i actually like is the Boxster.
Ha! I agree, Porsche not Porscha like Nike not Nikeee👍🏻😃 another great video mate
Haha yes quite :)
Nice job. Objective and accurate.
It's a cracking car. Only going to appreciate in value. You get alot of car for the money (for now)
I agree. I think in 10 years time they will be double this figure
