    Porgy & Bess made a lot of critics forget their segregationist views. It's timely even today. Gershwin had a real touch of life & was able to express it so beautifully. george traganos

    I remeber seeing the original movie back in the late 50's and have never seen the original film sense. it reminds me of growing up in Atlanta,ga. my old community was close nit. although it was segregated back then, I had some fun memmories of life. if anyone from Atlanta can remember the old 4th ward/butter milk bottom cumminty,it was a slum, however it was clean. every one tried thier best to rise above from where we lived. it was hard times,but I made it out.

    If the audience was Polish, exposed to Gershwin's music, Dubose Heyward and Ira Gershwin's lyrics, an all black cast, possibly for the first time, that might explain the lukewarm applause for this FABULOUS performance!!!!! Quite a change from European opera.
    Thanks for this awesome video and the name of the lead singer! Will check him out more!

    • @VisilabVideo
      @VisilabVideo  10 років тому +16

      Actually we taped the play on the dress rehearsal, so there weren't many spectators. Only dozens invited guests, so the applause is moderate. Next three days the opera was full, and they got standing ovations, but without the cameras.

    Went to look for this in itunes - found so many covers, some very different - I was looking for guy Lomardo's version - I have it on vinyl already. Love the "rhyming" - makes a lot of the modern rap look pretty naive. Gershwin did not use an online rhyming dictionary.

    Cab Calloway does a much better rendition of "It Ain't Necessarily So." After all, George and Ira Gershwin had Cab Calloway in mind when they composed the music and lyrics of that marvelous song.

      while i respect your opinion and enjoy cab, of the era, i believe the vocals of Paul Robson on It Ain't Necessarily So is better even though Robson's enunciation isn't proper. i've seen many versions of this entire libretto, Porgy & Bess being my favorite, but i must say i believe i prefer Reggie Whitehead's interpretation above all, even over more noted singers.

Having said that the scene was otherwise great, good casting, singing and production design.
