FLAT OUT (The History of Rally) - Episode 14 - The Finale
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2022
- FLAT OUT is the video series covering the history of rally from its beginnings way back in the 19th century, its evolution and where it is today, all the while looking at some of the greatest cars, drivers and stages to grace the worldwide sport.
Episode 14 covers the years of 2020 and beyond. The great hybrid had now made its way to the competition and so everything had suddenly become modern. But is this going to be a viable next step in the long, evolving story of rallysport?

Thank you all so much for the support on this series over the past 2 years! What do you think of the WRC going forward? Maybe I was a little too harsh on the Rally1 cars- I do love these things and think they have some great potential.

Thanks to you mate! this series were so good and very useful to get myself into rally now. Kinda sad sometimes how the sport is not getting so much attention like it used to be in the 90s or early 00s even when last year we just had possible one of the greatest generations of cars in the sport. Hope to see more videos related to rallying and the cars. Keep going and once again thank you mate, its been a journey.
I know the future seems a bit bleak with electric\hybrids in the future, but there is hope, in fact a certainty that combustion engines will still be around, because people keep forgetting about hydrogen engines, honestly the only reason we don’t have them everywhere now, is because big oil struck deals with just about everyone to push it back, it was going to be a common thing if the technology just played out in the early 2000s, until politics got involved, now all the money/subsidies are in electric, even though they don’t have a green impact right, or at all in my opinion, cause some were some one is burning gas or coal to keep up with the demand for electricity.
Sure I know that even tho hydrogen has a faster burn rate it doesn’t have as much explosive power…… but have we not learned anything from project paper clip? You got to have the right oxidizer! And paired with a faster burn rate then gas, your gonna get some Saturn V bangs for your buck, that’s why I can’t wait till Toyota puts out that 3 cyl hydro engine, in adding NO2, HO, etc in a heart beat, to make a mean green machine.
@@Spearmint22425 "cause some were some one is burning gas or coal to keep up with the demand for electricity."
While that is true now, you're blatantly ignoring the fact that alongside switching cars to electric, there is the push to move away from that as well. Electricity generation will eventually be done through a combination of solar/wind/nuclear/tidal energy generation methods.
I've never seen anyone naysay EVs after they've gotten behind the wheel of one that's actually fun to drive. Take a Hyundai EV6 for a spin and feel what it's like to have full torque while you're already going 75 or the fast takeoff it has, and this isn't even one of the fancier EVs. The only downsides to EVs are range and charge time; otherwise they are faster and have better handling than any equivalent ICE.
Today I watched all of the "FLAT OUT" episodes as it jumped up in my recommended page. I am absolutely satisfied with what I've seen, keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! :)
Lol same. Great job Jackoh!
9:10 YEY!!! It's me 😁 Honored for that!
Rally1 are amazing to watch, but they absolutely missed the point to have more manufacturers involved in the series.
Maybe a regulation with Rally2 + hybrid part/Wrc plus with less power (for Balance the performances) together would have been better for the future, but it's just my opinion. Second idea: something similar the regulation of WEC, they made great work and in the following years we will have lots of interesting cars competing in the series.
ps: the outro part is fantastic, I hope they won't switch off the background music due to the ridiculous youtube rules.
Welp, the new regulations practically did something similar to it.
Rally1 ditched the hybrid, slightly less aero, & less weight while Rally2 can be optioned to use a "WRC Kit" for more power & aero.
So effectively there will be two types of cars running together in the top class for 2025.
Congratulations on the series. It was fantastic from beginning to end.
New rallying and F1 are not for me personally but that's ok.
I lived through the 80's & 90's era and I'll never forget it. Maybe the new generation love these series' the way I did, I hope so at least!
You should do rally reviews! The old ones ( the bests) and the new ones after their finish.
This is a great idea 👍
Nice conclusion, I'm looking forward to your next series!
Thank you!!
Kalle Rovanpera will be taking this season he is a legend
Next series recomendation
1. World sportcar championship
2.Grand prix racing(f1,indycar)
3.stockcar racing history
Love your work man!
With this series coming to an end, I'd love to see videos covering the ongoing championship (maybe an end of season review?). Maybe even dakar?
You could also cover other types of motorsport, perhaps a series like Flat Out but for sportscar racing (what is NOW called WEC) That is something I'd love to see, and no one else has done it.
Also, because this channel is criminally underrated, you could consider doing one or two F1 videos covering old races or seasons, since formula one content has been popping off for some reason lately. (You can always do videos about Kimi, Kubica or Alonso and connect it to rallying as well.)
Eitherway, good job and good luck with your channel going forward. Cheers.
I would be interested in endurance rally like Dakar or Baja 1000 as well.
Formula one has undergone a massive growth in popularity over recent years (largely due to the popularity of Netflix's "Drive to Survive"). I've actually made a similar recommendation before, and I definitely believe that if he does some F1 content, it's likely that he'll gain mainstream popularity.
Dakar, Baja and WEC would also be great content to see him cover.
Aye this was a great finale, that montage was wonderful! The Rally1 question on the future of the sport is indeed a very pressing question; a recent interview w the fia rally director has left me little hope on if rally can continue tbh at the level it is, cus they flat out (heh) said that 2-3 manufacturers is a perfect number for them. It kinda makes sense - less people to please, and thus all manufacturers can win, but this is incredibly shortsighted, esp when compared to how WEC collapsed following the departure of the german teams. They would rather keep two clear categories in rally1 and rally2, rather than join the two into one massive category.
For me, the solution would be to ditch the Rally1 and make Rally2 the main category; similar to how Group A became the dominant class, Rally2 cars are good and fast, and most importantly are much cheaper to make. Whereas a late-gen WRCar cost about 750k euros, and a Rally1 car costs (allegedly, but disputed by the former hyundai boss) 400k, Rally2s cost about 200-250k. There's also already a bunch of manufacturers w cars in the category; Citroen has a massively successful program, taking the 2020 WRC2 title, Skoda is ever-dominant w the superb Fabia (and the new Fabia Rally2 looks to be massively successful too), the Fiesta Rally2 is reliable and accessible, and the Hyundai i20 Rally2 is also pretty good. Rally2 is honestly in a healthier space than Rally1, and w the ARA (the american rally association) moving their rules for the top class closer to Rally2 specifications, this means someone could buy an ARA Open4WD Subaru and easily and cheaply tune it to run in a Rally2 event in Europe.
As for optics and excitement, that's where i disagree tbh; sure, the cars do seem more of a let down online and from videos, but from personal experience, when i went to see them last year at the acropolis rally - my god those still pack such a punch. They are severely underestimated and under-represented tbh, and it does make sense cus well we're in the rally lean years since 2020 when ogier left citroen and thus citroen exited the sport. But those cars are still spectacular, despite looking over-engineered at points. I feel we'll gain an appreciation for them in 10-20 years, when the kids that watch rally now will grow up and start being nostalgic for them, much like we who grew up in the 2000s feel the same for the early WRCars. Rally1 is a fun and mean looking car. I just wish it was smarter in its design and tech implementation, and that they were cheaper.
Finally, cheers for reaching the finish line mate, this was a blast of a journey! Looking forward to more stuff from you, and thanks again for making a cool and easy rally primer for us to show to newcomers to the sport looking to learn its history :D
I was a little harsh on the Rally1 cars in this video I do admit, I enjoy them greatly. As for the other stuff you mentioned I do agree Rally2 is in a good position right now, though I think work can be done in all championships to increase interest from manufacturers.
Hands down this will always be the best and most comprehensive history of Rallying. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching them, even during multiple viewings. Thanks!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome finale, loved that montage at the end, any chance of uploading it as its own video?
If enough people want it I will definitely consider it!
Yes please
yes! like a trailer of this series
I second that idea
@@JackohMotors I would want it as a video as well
Fantastic series! Quick search for “History of Rally” brought me straight to this playlist. Great editing, narration and that montage is amazing. My only recommendation is that editing this into a single documentary length video would make for an great watch. Subscribed.
Thank you for the support! As for the compilation, something may be coming soon ;)
This is the greatest series in the history of ever!
Incredible Ending to an incredible series. Regarding the future, Electric will become the way to drive a car in the future, were still at an very early stage of its developement, but maybe in Rallying there will be another "Quattro Moment" when a team brings a fully electric drive car and shows that it can be done. I cannot wait to see what the future holds
Not looking forward to it, myself. I'm just old school.
Nice, I thought the previous episode was the last one
A bittersweet moment as I wish this series could continue forever! Loved this series and I make sure to show it to any rally fans I encounter. I wish Subaru would come back, though I'm eager to see what their electric version of the WRX will be whenever that comes along.
I'm absolutely blown away by the quality and production of this series and tbh I'm sad it's finally finished but here's an idea about your next chapter of the flat out series. Flat out but for endurance racing
Great series for somebody like me, just getting into the sport and being a history enthusiast. Thanks!
Not really a rally fan but this was really interesting. maybe I’ll have to check it out.
I'm still relatively new to the rally sport and today I stumbled on this documentary series. I think it's a good and comprehensible start for anyone getting into the sport! Looking forward to more in the future :)
Aaand I just finished this series
I didnt commented on any other episode but I watched every single episode of this documentary, and I dont regret searching "story of rally", at least now I know I wanted for a long time: the lore of rally since its beginning, and it was fun
now, let's see what the future holds for us
Just watched the whole seires back to back. Absolutely amazing seires
Best rally documentary I ever found. Great job man.
I gotta say this was a fantastic series. Honestly loved every single episode. Looking forward to the next big project. :)
Honestly i wish VW could make a Comback. The Polo R WRC is amazing rally Car and my favorite car of the 2010 Era. The Car did impressed me that much that i wanted one of the Homologation Specials and I'm a proud owner of one but i think that the Hybrid Polo R Will probably never come and VW is probably never gonna return until WRC will go full electric and probably iD4 GTX or something will be there. But the series is amazing. Thanks For making it! It's been a amazing drive. 🙂
Wow, honestly this series impressed me, I've liked rally since more than a decade now and hadn't seen such great telling of rally history, cheers and I hope you get more success
That was awesome! Great series, with great ending, that Crash cover fits amazingly well with WRC!
As i said in the 12th episode, i hadn’t received any notification of your channel so i missed the last 3 episodes, but anyways. I loves this series, the way u explanes it all and your channel in general, as well as this beautiful sport
I just watched all episodes and I loved them all!
And that ending was amazing, keep it up man!!!
Awesome Series needs more recognition for sure
Great Video
And thank you for this absolute great series of videos
Great series thanks for making it, you should definitely edit all the episodes into one long video and release that as well
Congratulations on this series, buddy. Very well made, entertaining and informative!
Thank you for this awesome series of videos
Thanks for the series. Learned a lot.
Absolute great series!
Had to binge all the episodes today 🎺
This series was just amazing to watch and even though i never was too interested in rally or motorsports in general, I just bingewatched the whole series in one sitting. I don't know how you did it but the way you explained everything really had me emotionally invested in some of the sports teams just to be sad when they would eventually leave. The poly models were an absolutely perfect addition giving me simple but memorable mental images for every car. I was so excited everytime I saw a car I knew before pop up in the video and the end montage was perfect to summarize the most important events from the series.
If you have the motivation, I would really encourage you to do a similar series on other motorsports as well!
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed
And superbe serie btw 🙏🙏
Great conclusion to a great series! I'd recommend making a supercut af all the episodes into one video. Either way, massive fan of your work in general, so looking forward to what you'll be doing next
I am thinking about doing one, however it will be after a few months as to not impede the views of the original series for a while.
Watched through the whole series, thanks for all the work! I really enjoyed it.
Personally I like the new Rally1 cars though fully electric wouldn't sit right with me probably. We just need more competition (cause Toyota is significantly ahead and lack of hope will make otthe others quit too) and more manufacturers to return! just 3 is less fun...
Watched it from the first episode till the last! One of the best, if not THE best rally documentaries out there. Your channel is such a hidden gem.
By the way did you drop the idea of making a video on the Mid Night Club?
In its original form, yeah. Didn't really feel like doing another full length documentary, but I am doing some work on turning it into a mini-series down the line as it is a subject I'm interested in.
@@JackohMotors What happened to the little teaser you made for it?
@@hristiyanangelov3610 I had to take it down due to copyright problems unfortunately
@@JackohMotors That's unfortunate, wish I had it saved somewhere 😁. It was short but sweet!
They need to open the formula again lemans is starting to do it
What about pikes peak / hill climb car history
Or history of f1 starting at pre war to modern
An all electric WRC cars would destroy the traditional ones, mostly because of the insane amount of torque (plus at any rpm) electric motor provide. Performance is all that matters at the end.
No matter how many people dislikes, electric is the future of motorsport. There will be no incentive to develop better fuel based powertrain when your volume seller is electric. If manufactures aren't focusing R&D for electric, there's no point of racing. After all motorsports are just a marketing exercise for manufactures. Even if manufactures keep gasoline engine, they would just not going to have improvements.
