My daughter's have carried knives since they were 5yrs old, builds familiarity and confidence with the tool. A couple years later I taught them very basic defense... 1) if you can't deploy it it's useless. 2) hammer grip. 3) groin, throat, eyes or joints ( in that order). As they learned situational awareness they usually opted to keep the knife in hand, usually in a pocket, when they sensed something might get sideways. Kids in general, but especially girls really need to keep it as simple and effective as possible. I let them pick their knives over the years, but my requirements were... fixed blade) 3" blade, full tang, single edge, non slip handle. Folder) 3" blade, locking, one hand open, single edge, non slip handle. Some were kershaw and crkt, no cheap crap. For graduation they got custom griptilians.
My advice, familiarize you kids with violence, in as healthy a way as possible, it's not the weapon that wins the fight, it's the mindset.

Attacker or robber can get way more aggressive when you keep hand in pocket even stab/shot you because of that tho.

Based on what I know, the more the merrier.
The knife should not be the first line of the defense, but it doesn’t hurt to have it.
First choice should be the firearm and then less lethal choices.
But Guns run out of ammo or fail, tasers and pepper spray don’t always work on certain people.
Having the knife can be a last line of defense. Beats going hands on.
When a bad guy starts seeing his blood all over the place, he might freak out and run away.
But practice with a practice knife so you don’t cut yourself.

Everything I’m reading is talking about defending yourself from a bad guy. What most of the men here are missing, is it’s not statistically the bad guys who hurt us the most. That’s rare. We are much more likely to be hurt by our date, or our boyfriend etc. these are already close situations. Having any kind of on body backup weapon may be all we have. We’re not going to be able to pull out a big taser and we know we have a massive strength disadvantage. Our only advantage is surprise. So yes, we want to know how to carry a knife.

As a woman who has training in both military and civilian life, I don't think pepper spray is the best choice because of the potential of it blowing back in your face if you use it outside. Some people are also pretty resistant to it. Likewise, some are resistant to the pain of a stun gun or taser. A knife, on the other hand, has the potential of not only inflicting pain, but of causing functional impairment. My instructor always said, "You want to disable the limb or body part that is attacking you, not just cause pain." If you feel a knife is not the best choice for women, overall, then what weapon would you suggest that has a reasonable chance of causing functional impairment, besides a firearm?

Seeker - that is a fair question and our opinions are just that... our opinions. Having consulted with several experts in combat I have learned that there is no consensus for the perfect form of self defense that works equally well for everyone. However, I think most would agree that carrying the best force multiplier that you can, which you can responsibly wield, and cannot be taken easily and used against you is optimal. Warfighters' primary tool is a rifle, followed by their sidearm, (often then a secondary sidearm), and then some form of edged tool. I would so much rather have my daughters use a ranged weapon (even if non-lethal) that buys them time to run, than trying to go hands on with someone. -Rusty

I sprayed at least six perps with pepper spray, worked one time. So I went to Cold Steel Inferno foam. Foam works great, is sticky, and hard to get off.

    • @Equip2Endure

On the other 5 times, would it at least have bought the time/space for someone to flee the perp? Different for you if you have to arrest them.

I believe a hard impact weapon is even if not superior to a blade at standoff distance. But in an elevator or hallway, there can be problems employing a longer bat or baton, (obviously). But the initial strike must be superior to the extent the agressor is put down and or stunned to the point of incapacitation. Allows one to make a second strike or flee. Bill Bagwell the late great bowie maker routinely carried a 13" blade, and was incredibly fast, like a blur. He often trained govt agents in blade uses, and his blades were forged in heaven(or hell as he said), it seems to me.

I live in OC and have been in numerous precarious situations with men approaching me, following me and trying the engage me in parking lots.. with all three of my children in tow.. I felt so vulnerable in that situation. If one person distracted me Md another tried to take one of my kids.. I would want a fire arm bc at the very least they would drop my kid and run at the sound of a shot.. plus I’m one woman with three small kids.. I’ll be damned if someone is going to hurt any of my babies!

Women should not rely on knives or other similar melee weapons as their primary defensive weapon because, unless you're an expert knife thrower or something, using a knife requires you to be within arms reach of a man who is quicker and stronger and can easily overpower you and then use your weapon against you.
I think firearms are a better option for women, but think that situational awareness and strategic decision making are the first line of defense. I've seen footage of unsuspecting women just being sucker punched and knocked out cold. Predators don't always give you enough warning. And in those situations, no knife or gun is going to save you.

Push blade for close contact. Shorter learning curve than a martial art.. If taken off guard and the threat gets inside arms length...pepper spray and tazer is not the best choice. Or a tactical flashlight

You mentioned California, if you carry a fixed blade it has to be open carry. No switchblades are allowed. A flip blade can be deployed fast enough. Even the most skilled women in martial arts and knife fighting will tell women not to go toe to toe with a man. Mace and tasers often are not effective, for example, if a man is high on drugs or alcohol or just has a high tolerance to pain. I'm thinking if a woman is grabbed, what is the best thing she can grab to get herself out of that situation, and it will be only one thing? The knife should be deployed in a manner that the subject does not know she has a knife until he is cut and hopefully disabled. Arms should be disabled first. If you go into him to stab at his torso, neck, or head, you are quite likely to be grabbed and disarmed. Most stabs will be ineffective in disabling a man. You need to cut his arm. That is stab, twist and cut his forearm. And/or stab and cut him below the belt line. Then run, you can quite easily outrun a severely bleeding man.

I have a few years experience doing full contact martial arts and there are still plenty of people who I cannot even land a single hit on when we do GENTLE sparring.
This fact alone would make any sort of hand to hand weapon useless for me if I tried to defend myself against such a person. The only exception is if I concealed the weapon until within grappling range and went for a unexpected strike. But that's a gamble because I would be left with no backup option if the strike is not effective.
    So i agree
Most people should not try to use a knife for self defence.
Get a ranged weapon or at the very least a larger melee weapon that gets you out of unarmed striking range.

but, even at close range with a ranged weapon all she had to do is point and pull the trigger. For most people this is much easier than attempting to strike someone which is what a knife requires.
Striking someone may seam simple but if your not used to it its surprisingly difficult - more so if your getting assaulted.
The only time I can imagine a knife being any use for someone who is not used to fighting and violence is if they can conceal it for a surprise strike but if that does not end the incident immediately then they are screwed.

Completely agree with your assessment. I live in one of the communist states with no right to carry, so my wife has some Sabre pepper spray as a primary deterrent. She also has a small knife, but I think it is more of a peace of mind for her than an actual defense tool.
