    Today, you're going to learn how to use a knife for self defense. Self-defense with a knife is complicated. Mike Janich of Martial Blade Concepts provides some very good explanations about how and when to use your knife to defend yourself. Stabbing your attacker is not the best action to take in the face of an assault. It is more important to stop the attacker's ability to fight by taking away his ability to grab and hold weapons or move toward you. This is best accomplished by long cuts to muscles groups.

    I went to vo-tech with a man in the mid 80s. At the time his left fore arm was heavily suture and wrapped. I asked what happened he said he was attacked by a knife wielder in downtown Minneapolis bar one night in his nieghborhood. He was able to wrap a coat around his arm after the attack started, it took 3 others to help stop the psycho. Law enforcement wasn't able to find the attacker. About 5 weeks after the incident my friend spotted the individual strolling down the sidewalk in a near by nieghborhood and the front bumper of his 78 Mercury Cougar caught the perp! Street justce? What I wonder about is slash is the ability (or inability) to slash through long-sleaved coats or jackets. A short blade might not get through a heavy fabric like denim or leather.

    • @USCCAOfficial
      @USCCAOfficial  7 років тому +82

      That is a good point, Ray. A short blade might not get through heavier fabrics as easily as thin fabrics. I'm so glad you're thinking about these things now and not in the heat of a self-defense incident!
      Factoring in the fabric - what modifications would you consider?

    • @raychilensky3618

      Slashing at the fingers instead of the arm is an option, but the fingers are a much smaller target. Mr, Janich has often said that the legs are not usually protected layered clothing so dealing with the initial attack with a block or deflection and then cut to the legs to disable the assailant is a possibility. Stabbing into the arm is also an option if you've trained and practiced enough with your blade of choice to be that accurate with your thrusts.

      In the joint we would use newspapers and magazines for armor. Works really good. I've been in 2 knife fights and have seen dozens. Most of what I've discovered is that it's almost always a sneak attack. Many times what you think is a punch is a stab. Anyway,my 2 cents.

    Even though this video is 6 years old I wanted to comment additionally to it. Slashing, in terms of stopping power, is nothing compared to a properly delivered stab. What does that mean? It means that you stab the body's shock zones. Specifically, the heart, penetrating the intercostal spaces between the ribs (provided you have a blade that is long enough) Then we have the eyes, kidneys and femoral artery (kills mobility and later kills the host due to blood loss. The reason a slash will not be as effective at stopping an opponent, generally speaking, is that a slash may contribute to the stopping of the threat due to blood loss but at a later point in time. This is operational time for an opponent to do their worst to you. I've seen this behavior even with firearms when the wrong caliber combined with poor shot placement fails to immediately target an area that produces enough shock to stop a target. While these instructors have some really good points their discussion and techniques are remiss. How do I know these things? I learned from the best. For knives that's Master Matei Florin. I call him master, that's not a title he actually uses but his skillset is truly scary. Then there is the legendary Massad Ayoob who I have studied extensively. Finally, know this: Knife fighting isn't pretty. In fact it's rather gruesome and if you are not mentally prepared or just cannot kill then do not carry (this goes for guns too) Most importantly, train. Without training you are a liability to yourself and others. Talent is no replacement for training.

      Knives are just not ideal for stoppage no matter how you spin it. Stabbing, slashing, it doesn't matter. They are great at inflicting lethal damage but not stopping the threat in a window of time that matters. They also look terrible in court. I suggest people look into Varg Freeborn for more on that. The only knife methodology that has real applications would be Craig Douglas's approach. Using the knife to break holds and create space when you're getting smothered. Not for stoppage. Carrying a 6 inch blade is unwieldy and unrealistic. Use that space for something more important.

    A cut above the eyes around the eyebrows is very effective if you can't get at the arm with the weapon or the leg, it's painful and it bleeds alot so the psychological effect is there but it also will obstruct the attackers vision since all that blood will run down over the attackers eyes. This may also give you the time to then disable the weapon hand.

    slashes/thrusts. If you de-fang the snake, the assailant can still cause
    great harm or death with other hidden weapons or simply his own size

      Gabby Sabel Rule #1 for women: Learn to get out of the Fear Mode even if you get punched in the face, or being threatened with a gun. Being with more than one does not make you safer: four women were tied up by one perpetrator, and murdered in a national park, notorious case where more than a dozen nurses were killed in on location, the Charleston church murder where no no one acted, and cases where the victim was taken to a motel and raped. Rule #2 Never display a knife even when physically attacked. Immediately fight/resist, or comply/plea until you get an opportunity, but don't get tied. Rule #3 Your attack should be a "Complete Surprise". Rule #3 Do not learn from UA-cam videos, or the police because they keep everything sterile. They promote legalities, self defense/commonsense instead of Self Preservation. Your aim is to "DO IT" with respect, like preparing a deer or fresh fish - that's life - It's your life and nobody cares more than you. Cameras do not stop criminals - recently a women walked up to a car while she was getting in and shot her in the head at close range. However, it Mike Janich is right: the justice system has a bias against knives, and therefore your results need to look different than that of criminal's. In that regard, defanging the snake is your best option if it presents itself to you in the fight.

    Fantastic video even 7 years later. In Canada you have a duty to retreat if you can. In court you must be ready to explain the many attempts you made to first deescalate, then disengage and that you only resorted to physical defense as a last resort. If you have time/space to leave and didn't, then you were not really in fear of your life. Being with seniors or children may hamper your retreat so explain that in court as well, you can't just run away leaving grandma and the children behind.

    Totally agree that "stabbing" is ineffective (except in jailhouse shankings). Slashing is correct, but against what target? An arm that is swinging something is moving too fast. Since lethal force is authorized, there is no time for political correctness. The "de-fanging the snake" philosophy sounds cool, but requires too much finesse under stress. The most effective response is an instantaneous slashing of the carotid. The target (neck) isn't moving and defense is impossible. Fight is over. I'll worry about the cops later. A call to USCCA should solve that issue.

      If you rep this its actually alot easier then you think to hit the hand of the attacker. Most people default to leaving there "lead" hand out (like a jab) all you have to do is slash in an X pattern and you should be able to hit your target. If you do miss you still at a range in which your opponent cant touch you easily. If you are close enough to stab someone in the carotid then they are close enough to stab you as well. The Defanging the snake method keeps you at a safe distance and still cause damage.

    I'm not convinced that the advice given here is entirely sound. Firstly, one should not approach such a situation with any fixed notions of how to defend. When being attacked such that one's life hangs in the balance, a defender takes whatever opportunity to strike his opponent as may present itself. If an opportunity to slash presents, you slash; to stab, you stab; to run like a scalded cat...
    As for targets, just as with opportunities, you take what providence presents. If I can strike the neck, I'm striking the neck as that is the most likely to stop the attack forthwith. Your points about cutting tendons and muscle are all well taken, but your presentation was too static. If the only thing I can cut is the attacker's left toe, then that's what I attack.
    Concerning use of proportional force - here I depart with you completely. If someone is threatening my life, I am going to use whatever force I deem necessary to get the job done, up to and including using terminal-level tactics. When fighting for one's life, there is no time to consider legalities. I would also point out that when the police arrive, assuming you've not left the scene, if you have any brains at all, you will refrain from saying anything. It is generally recommended that you say absolutely nothing for 72 hours after such an incident for reasons I will not go into here.

    The best time to use a knife or edged tool in self defense is when someone is choking you. It's damn near impossible to shoot your way out of a choke hold from behind and if you are realistically using a knife for a choke defense, sawing the choking arm until the aggressor lets go is the most effective method. Stabbing someone isn't needed for a choke defense so that should get you in far less legal trouble.

    This is a very reasonable way to use a knife in self defense. Not only it can be done with even a non-locking pocket knife, like my SAK with a blade just over 2" , it also keeps you some distance from the attacker, and it actually proves to the court that it was self-defense, unlike Master Ken's fantasies.

    I saw somebody mention this on another video but I also wanted to draw attention to the third strike motion with the blade into the quadricep. Most people know there is a femoral artery there, most people don't know a deep laceration through it can cause you to at very best go into shock in 1-3 minutes. My only critique is that the first two strikes are absolutely justifiable, the third will absolutely stop somebody but it might also kill them. Which is a bit harder to justify legally.

    One differing opinion - if somebody is armed with a gun and the only weapon you have is a knife, then you still need to “defang the snake.”
    Example: My can’t carry a firearm at work, but her knife for opening mail-n-stuff is ok. In an active shooter scenario if she can’t run, and hiding is unsuccessful, she’s knowledgeable in using her letter opener to stop the threat.
    Outside of that - great video

    I'm tempted to disagree with this on a number of levels. Slashing in a warding kind of capacity makes sense, but to reliably sever tendons like what he describes? No. Depending on that as a means of avoiding damage is placing the ability of the knife in your hand to absorb that incoming force without simply being knocked out of your grasp. If you're at and ECQC grappling range range and dragging the blade across the body part in question, that's another thing entirely. But aside from that, especially at that distance where you can throw repeated follow up shots, stabbing has enormous potential. Especially in a ripping and hooking motion on the way out. The thing is that stopping power may not be totally synonymous with lethality, in an ideal world it would be even more far removed and everyone would get to go home. But it's pretty goddamn close. Stuff that can *really* stop someone, even when they're beyond self preservation, that's stuff that might kill them unfortunately. And with a knife, that isn't severing tendons in their limbs, it's perforating organs and targeting arteries. You can see this kind of approach in action with SouthNarc's blade material. He's actually a good example, because I don't think he's *too* fixated on anatomy. Certainly seems aware, but it's objective based. He's showing how to do real damage, but the goal is ultimately making space or dominating positioning up close. Those are the two ranges where you have the most agency to stop their attack, either by evading or controlling and ideally you should be able to do both.

Ive seen people go to jail and have their lives ruined because they defended themselves or others from an aggressor. Using the same logic, it would be advisable to shoot the weapon out of the hand of the attacker. I stops the threat, easier to explain to the police, etc. But it just doesn’t work like that in the real world. Hitting a small area on an incoming arm with a 3 blade is like playing ping pong with a popsicle stick. It can be done, but it’s not easy. We shoot center mass because it’s doable and often effective. A handgun is also just making a puncture wound in much the same manner as a knife. Carry a longer blade.

    ISSUE!! Are assuming that the knife is on the strong side of a person unable to get his/her pistol deployed. The knife would be weakside most likely. There would be no way for a left hand to redirect the blow from a club, and cut the inside of an attacker's forearm that I see.
    So how does that work? I wish you guys have went a bit farther in covering a strongside gun and weakside knife EDC defense for Righthand people. For left strong pistol carry where they blade is in the right this would be ideal.

    Both thrusting and slashing are vital techniques to train and apply, especially if you are talking about disabling a threat, it's a fact that thrusts are more lethal than slashes, we have copius amounts of data dating back hundreds of years showing even why militaries around the world who used and trained with bladed weapons including swords adopted thrusts over cuts because a thrust was more effective at stopping enemy soldiers. It's not to say slashing is not effective, because it is especially slashes to the eye area to disable vision. But a thrust is more deadly and will likely put somebody down quicker than most slashes will, especially when you hit vital organs. It's hard to keep fighting when your heart or lungs have been punctured.
    We do have documented records of the lethality and effectiveness of cuts Vs thrusts, medical records, military records and historical records and even explanations from military leaders and trainers as to why thrusts are more effective in combat. This is why the British military adopted thrusting swords over cutting swords for their campaigns and wars, because it was proven time and time again that thrusts are more effective than slahes.

    • @JohnLee-bf2ux
      @JohnLee-bf2ux 2 роки тому

      Strange for you to say so as the English adopted the sabre for the most part of their Sea Empire viz the east India company. And it was the french and the Spaniards who used thrusts. The English favourite was the sabre pattern 1796 if I remember correctly. Also the cutlasses were English favourite. Slashing was the preferred move of the English to disable attackers limbs as thrusting would lead to over penetration and the sword getting stuck in the attacker while the attacker slides inwards in a deathly embrace and makes his move with his weapon while yours is full stuck in him getting in a successful kill. So English trusted the slash. And this made it’s way into the modern machete. Correct me if I am wrong. Romans preferred the thrust as they used shields along with it so they wouldn’t be cut.

    • @londiniumarmoury7037
      @londiniumarmoury7037 2 роки тому

      @@JohnLee-bf2ux You're correct, even after being told to focus on point and thrust, many English would still favour the slash, but it was still well known how effective the thrust is.
      Kind of like telling a soldier not to punch, and he should be grappling, but they still want to box because they enjoy doing it. The English were like that with thrusting, and anytime a 100% thrust style pattern of sword was introduced they would not approve of it. They knew that the thrust was more effective but still chose to slash and cut, officers would point this out, it was well known that the British liked to cut, but they were told to thrust more.
