I learned by accident that WMAQ flipped from country to all-news. I was brushing my teeth preparing for bed, and I had the station on. I didn't hear any music for a long time till it dawned on me that they'd changed. This was early 1988.

Pat Cassidy,by the dawn's early early light. now on at WBBM.if WMAQ never would've switched over sports,i probably would still be listening to WMAQ,As I now switched over to WBBM.kinda surprised how clear the stations come in here in Milwaukee.

NYC does have 2 all-news stations, namely WCBS(AM) and WINS. Interestingly, they're sister stations. WCBS is more into national and world news, while WINS focuses more on local news.

too bad that even in cities the size of Chicago and Los Angeles, there's not enough room for two 24-hour all-news stations. CBS tried it in DC with WNEW-FM but could not compete against WTOP. now WNEW runs talk and sports at night.

@@waynewright2886 WBZ start their all-news format (by day) a year or so after the former CBS-owned WEEI dropped theirs for sports in the 90s.. as the Boston Celtics had gotten hold of WEEI ... and the heiress of the Boston pizzeria chain Papa Gino's bought WEEI from CBS in the 80s. WBZ jumped at the chance to fill the void. But, even they knew you couldn't run it 24/7. WEEI wasn't all-news 24/7 either. The biz being crazy.. the all-sports WEEI is now under the same ownership again as WCBS. WBZ got spun off to iHeart as the merged Entercom with CBS Radio pushed them over the ownership cap and it needed to get rid of 4 stations.. WBZ Radio was one of them.

Couldn't Radio.com move 670 The Score up to 780 AM and sell the 670 AM frequency to iHeart Media so that WMAQ can be restored as an all-news radio station, like it was meant to be? Besides, WBBM already has its all-news presence predominantly on the FM dial at 105.9. As before, WMAQ would be a full-fledged NBC News Radio affiliate. The JAM custom ID jingle should be kept intact, as it was heard in the 1990s, but added with "...an iHeart Media station" to the legal ID.

You're right. What I'd like to see, myself, is WNBC (660, NYC) come back. The current occupant of the frequency is WFAN, sister station to WCBS and WINS. For music, I'd like them to be oldies, and they could still be the Yankees' and possibly the Giants/or the Brooklyn Nets flagship. Not gonna happen, of course, but, as a very old song goes "I Can Dream, Can't I?"

NBC's midwestern hub for over 60 years, sold in 1987 as GE dismembered NBC Radio. Westinghouse, which first started KYW in Chicago, moved it to Philadelphia, then Cleveland, and back to Philly again, ended up with 'MAQ and, after a merger with CBS, had to dispose of WIND to keep it. CBS/Westinghouse decided two 50kw I-A blowtorches shouldn't compete for news, so 670 went sports. In New York, 880/WCBS and 1010/WINS are also part of the CBS/Westinghouse package, but agreed to keep the stations' operations separate. Whether new owner Entercom will continue those arrangements, time will tell.
