When I see folk saying their grandparents loved this song i realise I must have moved on ...I'm 77 but it brings back great memories...the melody and harmonies expose the mind to nostalgia!
I was attending a garden fete in Sowerby Bridge, at White Windows, Leonard Cheshire Home for war veterans in 1967. When three special guests turned up, two from ITV’s Coronation Street, Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner), and Peter Adamson, (Len Fairclough), and one Engelbert Humperdinck, (Gerry Dorsey) who had just gone to number one with the hit song, “Release Me”. They were all standing at the top of the ornate stone staircase when everyone started asking him to sing, he stepped forwards and put his arms out asking the audience to be calm, and then he sang without a microphone and without any musical accompaniment his number one song, “Release Me”. Absolute magic…..
My momma loved this song and I remember her playing this on her record player while she cleaned house and sang along. Great childhood memories’ I miss her everyday 🥰
My Grandmothers and Great Aunts went crazy when they saw him on TV but I can still remember my Grandfather saying, "Calm down Mary, he is on the TV, he can't hear you"
i remember my dad singing and playing this song a lot before he divorced my mum, it always brings a tear to my eye, because he met his second partner and loved her very much, they had a child together, my brother, and he was very happy, sadly my dad died when his little boy was five, he was only 52 years old, so glad he found happiness before he left this world, life is to short to be sad, make your peace or move on !
True. Unhappy marriage no matter how much you want to be happy but your spouse is unwilling to meet you halfway makes the husband die early or the Brain- Heart-Health Connection deteriorates quickly!
Just saw Engelbert in concert at the Alleghany Event Center, Salamanca, N.Y. The man still has it !!!!! At 78 years old, his voice is the same great sound and his charisma and sex appeal with his moves onstage gets better with time !!
I was a black jack dealer at the Sahra Tahoe when he performed there. After the shows he would spend hours talking to his fans, taking photos. I really had respect for him, just the way he treated his fans. All this and the fact he had a great voice. One of my favorite intertainers.
I believe this video is from The Engelbert Humperdinck Show. I watched the show faithfully, with excitement, every week it was on TV. I especially loved this video because he did something he used to do all the time, but sadly, no longer does. He caressed his beautiful face with his magnificent hand. In this particular video, he also opened his mouth, and ever so gently, tugged at his bottom lip with his pinky finger. Oh my God!!! How fabulous was that??? I remember he often, very slowly, caressed the side of his face while singing, from his temple down to his chin. He sang with such emotion, it was as if he had to touch someone, and he was the only person around. He just couldn't help himself, I guess. I don't know why he stopped doing it because it was so exciting and sensual to watch. I really wish he would resume that amazing move. I truly miss it!!!!!
my grandfather used to sing this song. repeating the same lyrics "please release me let me go" he has Alzheimer disease. Even though he forgot my name i know he loves me. love ya grandpa. btw sorry for the bad english
my mum loved Engelbert Humperdink, I remember coming home from school and she would be playing this really loud while she danced and sang while doing the house work......playing this for her birthday today.....always miss you Mum
To be fair, the Release Me single went to Number 1 in the UK charts, edging out The Beatles' double A-side single "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane."
Great year for this song to top the charts...I was born in april 67 and I love this song today...thanks to my parents great taste in music and I do appreciate this amazing man and his voice..total perfection!
This song has the distinction in the UK of holding the number-one slot in the chart for six weeks during March and April 1967, and preventing The Beatles single, "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields Forever", from reaching the top.
never forget this as longs as I live , this song was playing the night I went to see my brother Ted in the surgical unit at the neurological dept. at the Whittington hospital 25th March 1967, he sadly passed away Sunday 26th March 1967 just 30 years old .
barry rudge I disagree. Strawberry fields was about John Lennon's childhood home. And to me it's was more modern at the time than this song. It sounds more 50s. I still think it's a good song though.
I agree. Saw him in concert in Carlisle, Cumbria, UK. Great singer, great concert. I took my Mam....such a wonderful memory to have now she is gone. Last Waltz was her favourite. Such a fantastic singer ...
My grandmother used to sing this song to my mother growing up. My mother did the same to me. I can’t wait to introduce my children to this wonderful song and singer in the future, they surely don’t make them like this anymore. ❤️
Oh yeah, crazy talent. I remember being a kid when Engelbert and Tom Jones were dominating their genre. My parents had all the old crooners albums in the house. Sinatra, Andy Williams, Matt Munro, Tony Bennett, Jack Jones etc. All those guys were great. But these two guys were just better with the exception of Sinatra. Sinatra didn't have the voice these fellows had but he knew how to sing. He really did sound like he was singing to you, the listener. No idea how he did that, strange talent. Over the years I've gone back and forth as to which of these two guys was better. I have come to the conclusion that they are both great, but just different. Engelbert was actually hospitalized for malnutrition at one point in his career because he couldn't earn enough to sustain him and his family...hard to imagine. Gordon Mills, manager for both Jones and Humperdinck was a genius. He thrust-ed both of these great talents into the public eye and the rest is history. Lucky for us.
Actually, Elvis is called the King of Rock & Roll BUT he sang everything well. Elvis' voice range was impeccable, however, Engelbert's specialty definitely was romance only. His singing range isn't much BUT he does it well. I like Humperdinck as well.
Great childhood memories. My Mom loved to play Engelbert tunes, she'd fill the house with them off the old, Grundig Stereo-phonic Record player in the living room. My Pops was never jealous of Engelbert----he knew he was the man !!
I was madly in love with Engelbert. Many couldn't get past his name and dismissed him as a mediocre artist. But the truth is he was drop dead gorgeous and had lodes of talent. How I would have loved to kiss those meaty lips.
loved him when i was younger that 16 um nott gonna say now haha long time and whats with all and contiuous negetive ppl cut their own stuff down or find a job lol
Jon Clay That's right. The charts back in those days had far more variety than today. They catered for ALL ages and tastes, with comedy stuff doing well, and novelty records were common--even light classical TV themes. A much healthier mix I say. Most mature people are now isolated by the Radio stations, who don't giva-f, and who cater for the young only, while trying to look hip-to their audience. Resulting in boring sameness crap--it's all dying and need's a blood transfusion of common sense.
I remember this Palladium performance, his first major TV appearance, which made him famous overnight. The record shot to number one almost immediately. Sadly--this fantastic break came about because a famous singing star of the 50's--into the 60's , Dickie Valentine ?---was ill and couldn't make it, what a gift.
My grandmother gave me my first cassette. Guess who it was. Engelbert Humperdinck of course. I would sing these songs to sleep every night while living in South Plainfield, NJ. What a beautiful time and Wonderful Memories.
One of the great ballads of the twentieth century. A masterwork by a great singer. Last part "SO release me" possibly the most emotional note I ever heard in a song. Humperdinck hit notes that no other singer could match, possibly they came directly from heaven. An underrated talent if there ever was one.
Back in the 60s my parents had the drawbridge pub in Bristol next to the Bristol hippodrome where he was appearing bottom of the bill before he was famous as Gerry Dorsey his real name. He came in for a drink & my mum served him. His then manager came in calling him to get to the theatre, My mum said to him 'you should change your manager', he replied 'do you think so'. He did change his manager to the one who managed tom jones. The rest is history as they say,
A very interesting story. Engelbert definitely is one of the great crooners all-time. I was in Las Vegas in '70 when he was coming to the Riviera but had to leave before his show. I have always regretted that I did not see him.
This was one of my Mothers all time favorites. we lost her 6 months ago. I can never forget the many times this was played in our home and the old girl would sing along. the 60's and 70's were two fantastic decades

"Please Release Me (Let Me Go)" Please release me, let me go For I don't love you anymore To waste our lives would be a sin Release me and let me love again I have found a new love, dear And I will always want her near Her lips are warm while yours are cold Release me, my darling, let me go (Please release me, let me go) For I don't love you anymore (To waste my life would be a sin) So release me and let me love again Please release me, can't you see You'd be a fool to cling to me To live our lives would bring us pain So release me and let me love again (Let me love, let me love)

His big break that made him world famous was this beautiful but sad song , and boy can he sing it . What a fabulous voice , and yes I think Engelbert as well known and successful as he had become after Please Release me, was still underrated as a singer . He has an amazing voice .
When I see folk saying their grandparents loved this song i realise I must have moved on ...I'm 77 but it brings back great memories...the melody and harmonies expose the mind to nostalgia!

🌹 Sadly marriage is not a bed of roses ...both partners should strive to make it work successfully

Lovely song..... we'll see our Dead Loved ones in Jehovah's coming New World... see Acts 24:15...,and Revelation 21:1-5...
He don't need instruments , his voice is music.
He literally has instruments backing him on this song?
Just saw Engelbert in concert at the Alleghany Event Center, Salamanca, N.Y. The man still has it !!!!! At 78 years old, his voice is the same great sound and his charisma and sex appeal with his moves onstage gets better with time !!

My parents loved this song. Thinking of them now and missing them so much. ❤
The song that introduced him to the world. Still magic today!
I wonder if this version was the one when he sung it the first time at a royal variety performance i think
not in France
not even released
his only hit here is "A man without love"
my grandfather used to sing this song. repeating the same lyrics "please release me let me go" he has Alzheimer disease. Even though he forgot my name i know he loves me. love ya grandpa. btw sorry for the bad english

Elvis did it better. 50 million times better
@@davidchapman9615 Elvis Presley's version is Country, Engelbert's is pure ballad. Not comparable.

Grate song! I listened since I was a child, today I have 39 years old and still loves this beautiful song!
Truly stunning. This timeless song beautifully sung by EH is one to take on a trip to a desert island watching the sun go down.

"Please Release Me (Let Me Go)"
Please release me, let me go
For I don't love you anymore
To waste our lives would be a sin
Release me and let me love again
I have found a new love, dear
And I will always want her near
Her lips are warm while yours are cold
Release me, my darling, let me go
(Please release me, let me go)
For I don't love you anymore
(To waste my life would be a sin)
So release me and let me love again
Please release me, can't you see
You'd be a fool to cling to me
To live our lives would bring us pain
So release me and let me love again
(Let me love, let me love)

His big break that made him world famous was this beautiful but sad song , and boy can he sing it . What a fabulous voice , and yes I think Engelbert as well known and successful as he had become after Please Release me, was still underrated as a singer . He has an amazing voice .
Una de las mas grandes voces que han existido junto al Rey Elvis Presley
I remember hearing "Relase Me" somewhere and thought it was catchy. Took a while to realise it was Engelbert Humperdinck.
brilliant voice
So nice . I bet your dad is looking down at you with a BIG SMILE ! and you will have this music forever .
Never get tired of listening to this man's velvet voice
I like how he takes a half-bow in acknowledging the audience’s recognition of the beloved song.
I love the songs of Engelbert Humperdink since I was young and up to present
Wow! This is a waltz. The recording I have by him of this song is in 4/4 time. I didn't know that this 3/4 version existed! Is great!!
