The lines “all of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars. All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars.” Saved me more times than I can count.
I just became a new Rush fan earlier this year, after watching the music video for 'Subdivisions' and finding the lyrics reminded me of the outcast I was in school, as well as loving their musicality. I only wish I had given them more of a listen earlier in life, because now I will never get to see them in concert. At least we have their albums and all of this great concert footage to watch. I also read Geddy's memoir last year and really enjoyed that.
There are many stories of Rush fans going through dark and difficult times and have expressed that the music of Rush helped them get through it all. Definitely powerful lyrics. Thank you for the reaction, you moved me…
Many have said Rush sings the songs of their lives. I know I do. And whether we take the lyrics the way Neil meant them - it doesn't matter. Good lyrics or poetry are universal. Heck, even Geddy said that when he sings the lyrics he has to believe them - and will tell Neil to change them for that reason (among other reasons). But - Geddy also said the same thing - he may look at the lyrics differently than Neil, but as long as he can believe them as they relate to his own life and experiences it is okay - they have meaning to Geddy. One more reason they stayed together for so long - mutual respect and understanding.
This was basically blacklisted by MTV and only rarely shown due to the subject matter. It's so sad when you think of how many lives it might have saved if it had been shown and shared.
We love rush cause we get the whole buffet, incredible lyrics, creators, musicians songs etc. yes care, I'm sure listeners hearing this said, neil's talking to me , understands what I'm going thru, putting my feelings in words, neil ty for helping soooo many with your lyrics 👍🤝
Girl, you really went down the RUSH rabbit hole. I get such joy watching your reactions to these guys, most women can't appreciate what they did musically. I discovered them shortly after I started playing drums some 47 years ago, Neil was a big influence on me. I still play and he still inspires me. There will never be another band like them.
“You’re a guy, you’re supposed to be tough.” Okay, that helps. “Talk to your friends.” Don’t have any. Seriously, I talk to no one about anything. My wife has enough anguish and grief of her own, losing people. She doesn’t need my crap piled on. I need to be strong for her. Thankfully, there’s music. It really helps to quieten the noise.
This is one of Alex's simplest guitar solos, but it's so delicate and beautiful that I love it. It starts with an atmosphere of something heavy and floating beneath the surface, and gradually towards the end a scene of hope emerges.
Don't make this 63 year old longtime RUSH fanatic tear up now! Whoever thought that at my age, and married no less, I would feel as lonely and heartbroken as I do! A large part of this is that I am an empath, and care so deeply for those I love. There are 3 people in particular, who I care for immensely.... my wife, my daughter (just started college), and my brother (grown man of 60 who never found any friends or soulmate). The 2 latter are 'on the spectrum', and feeling very lonely and lost themselves. I've tried so hard to help them and be there for them, but as they say, you can't help anyone if you yourself are alienated and depressed...
The more I watch your reviews of many Rush songs the more I can see how a lot of these lyrics and songs really hit home with you... therapeutic. There's a very slow song off of Farewell to Kings called Madrigal that I think you would really like
Thanks so much for reacting to the pass. Such a beautiful song. While I was familiar with the song I never sat down and read the lyrics. One thing I will always be thankful for you is your reinventing Rush songs for me. Good mental health is so important. This song expressed it well. "Dreamers learn to steer by the stars." Dreamers turn to look at the cars. " ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Just reminding me about taking care of my mental health is so appreciated. ❤️❤️❤️🎧🎸❤️❤️❤️
Great to see a Rush fan in training...your reactions are really great! And thanks for sharing the story about your nephew. I lost my nephew a few years back at too young an age to one rash and final decision...this song always hits close to home. Keep it up!!
Thank you for sharing such emotional and private thoughts about your nephew. It takes a lot of light to break through the darkness.....yet sometimes, there's enough light in just one song to completely break through. Thank you for caring.
>this song is a lifesaver. Every day, for me. In the darkest times, when I feel alone, that no one understands.... I listen to this song and feel at least just a little bit better. The world needs more people like these three caring geniuses. 😎
So hard to pick just one (or two,.or 10), but this is probably my favorite Rush song, and Presto is definitely my favorite Rush album. "All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars. All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars." I have used that to lift up friends more than once. Thanks for this one!
Powerful song Red. The Album Presto often gets a bad wrap, but I don't believe there is a bad Rush album. I remember when this came out, this song became an instant favourite of mine.
RUSH, it’s a thing. A thing you are a part of now. 🙂 You are one of the ones who deserve the Rock and Roll Time Machine. I would love to be your tour guide into one of these old concerts! I was an expert in this environment. You really are the perfect RUSH fan. In many ways you are. We appreciate you so much! Know that! ❤️
When this song came out 35 years ago I had hardly ever been in that place, understandably, I was way younger, but in the ensuing decades of turbulent times I myself have never considered or reached that point, but the number of family, friends, family of friends that have committed themselves to a ultimate and untimely end is staggering and heartbreaking. “Suicide doesn’t ensure things won’t get worse, it only guarantees that things cannot get better.”🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤
This is such an amazing song. Superb lyrics. I loved this song from the first time I heard it after buying Presto. From what I'm told, Neil Peart drew some inspiration from Oscar Wild.
Presto and this track were released in 1989, a few years into my college years and my first time ever living away from home and having some of those first really truly feeling alone moments, thousands of miles from home. Those years were such a mix of highs and lows and this album and track definitely helped me remember that the struggles weren't only mine and that there was always a way through. I know years later I've had conversations with friends that felt the same, especially about this song, that it really spoke to them and was a small piece of helping them through some difficult times.

This song has a way of bringing out emotions even if you don’t understand what the lyrics mean. The arrangement, the changing tempo, and the harmonies just hit you square in the feels.

I remember seeing this tour live with Primus as the opening act. Incredible show! But it was at this show where i really took in the lyrics. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately the only place that played this song out here was MTV Headbanger Ball! Great reaction RED, you said it all!!! CHEERS TO ALL!!! 🍻🤟👏
Wow! Geddy's voice was still in pretty good shape then! Quite the contrast to that live version of 'The Camera Eye' a few moments ago! 😬 Just like 'Scars', 'The Pass' is from the 'Presto' album, which had been the first brandnew Rush album for me as it had been released at the end of '89, after I'd discovered them only several months before. Which I'd found out about while driving home from work one night, and a new song was playing on the radio with a very familiar voice singing on it; It took me a moment to realise I was hearing Rush on the radio for the very first time, and of course I was quite excited by it, too! 😁 That song was 'The _Red_ Tide' 🙂
I am so so sorry for the loss of your nephew - my heart goes out to you - to add - Neil would have been 72 years old today and - he was a Second Father to me - a Second Spiritual Father - I started playing the drums when I was 3 years old - as far as Rush that about says it all - so sorry for your personal loss
I thought Presto was below the par at the time but I recall revisiting it a few years ago and thinking to myself - hey this is a pretty good album. I find that can happen with music. You don’t care for it at one point in time and then years, or even decades, later you do!
I am so sorry for the loss of your nephew. I agree with you that mental health is so important, and I also believe that music (and books) have the power to affect our lives in a number of ways. Personally, as an aunt of nephews myself, I feel that sometimes men are not taught how to deal with their emotions in our culture here in the United States, at least. I know a number of men in my own life who have been shamed for being emotional, and I think that's unhealthy. I only hope songs like 'The Pass' are getting more of a listen; it has the power to connect with people who are struggling.
I just love your reactions, and I feel the same way alot of times. Let me ask, after you do your show, don't you wanna just go put on a Rush album and enjoy? That is what I do after watching every every one of your Rush reactions.
This song has helped me through several very difficult times in my life, and I suspect it will continue to help the next time life decides to throw me a major curveball. So sorry to hear about the loss of your nephew.
Sorry for your loss thats tragic. I appreciate that rush Neil addressed this subject. Ill take Neils words "the force goes into the flow, " just say no is easy depending how strong u are, but what happens when too weak? there is no other road to get to, even if you see it, similar to a arm wrestling match but in the will, to want to go on. there's only one winner every time us or them. been in this temptation been delivered from certain death. I'm being overly persuaded to expose where this is coming from, and all areas with the same purpose. As a believer hidden knowledge becomes seen to teach about, but experience one on one, with darkness, and what that in tails, adds power afterwards, a force to the argument when you teach. and like rush ill will be speaking as soon as its ready against suicide on a human and spiritual level, and all darkness and where we are walking to. for those who at this time have no light, or had less, as a true guide. great reaction and great advice next time
Men generally deal with emotions in quite differently than women do. Men typically live to solve things... is a purpose. So, when troubled most men get busy or look for a distraction until they can deal with a problem, fact is by the time many return to face a issue they see it as a smaller issue if one at all. The Pass how everything does come to pass... “All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars. All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars.” What's literally said in that is answers lay within yourself. Which is actually true.... for everyone.
Tough subject matter but really important to understand the gravity of the subject. I lost a close friend to suicide and I always felt I should been able to do more to prevent it but I came to realize when someone is in that state of mind they don’t always want to hear you and unfortunately their destiny is already determined in their mind,
The Pass....special song. Sorry about your loss. Rush recorded a cover album called Feedback. I love how they end, The Seeker, R30. Three friends having fun. A good watch is Crossroads Super Jam rock and roll hall of fame Alex is currently playing guitar with a band (project) called Envy of None. The last song on the first album He wrote as a tribute to Neil. It's called Western Sunset. He explained before Neil's passing that they would watch the sunset together. Watch Western Sunset by Envy of None. Have a tissue nearby. Rush are the best.
One of the most deeply moving and powerful songs. Many cite it withbgetting them through very nearlybdoing something tragic. No one would ever play it. Its dark but it is also hopeful. Dont turn you back. Look at the stars.
I was there at RUSH concerts since 1980!! Michigan and then Arizona! Learned to play drums from Neil!! :) :) :) ♥ Christian band.. FYI.... I haven't' even kissed a lady on the lips in about 34 years!!! just shoulders caring...... Just being open and not afraid.... Women are NOT to be used!!! nor men, of course.............. Love you!!! :) ♥♥♥
Sorry about your loss.💔 Please check out The Enemy Within, the first from the Fear Trilogy, about the inner fears and phobias. A pop/ Reggae style track with great motivational lyrics.
This is a song that always pulls me back from the ledge when times get extremely dark. It's disheartening that so many people accused them of glorifying "un-aliving themselves", when in reality it's exactly the opposite! In fact it even depicts someone who has caught someone in the process of an attempt, and doing everything in their power to see that the attempt failed.
Side note: don’t let anyone dissuade you from listening to their living cover album called Feedback. Yeah it’s kind of not a Rush album but they sound amazing and make sings they grew up loving sound really good.
Would like to hear your reaction to resist, the acoustic version from r30. I saw it live and it has stuck with me ever since. The regular version is great but this one is more personal. Not a side of rush we see often.
So many awesome bands around the planet like Kansas, Queen, Boston, Styx, Toto etcetc, but Rush is unreached. Still my absolute No.1 after all those decades and still the only band that Babymetal couldn't overtake (and considering my love for Babymetal that says a LOT). Greets from Germany, enjoy!
This song saved me as a teen...a long time ago. Not from suicide but from feeling lost and alone ....thanks Neil
"It's not as if this barricade blocks the only road." A lyric I always come back to when confronted with despair...
The lines “all of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars. All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars.”
Saved me more times than I can count.
I lost a daughter to cot death 3 years after this song was released. It helped more than I can explain.
Finally A Girl who Loves RUSH the way we do..
Know a few other lady YT reactors with the same passion. A couple of them even cry while reacting to Rush lol.
Make no mistake, there are a whole lotta girls who love Rush.
Aint just a girl a Lady ❤❤

One of my favorite Rush songs ever!!!
Watched an interview and all three members said “the pass” was emotional for them to play…
This song is so deep. It makes me think of people who didn't make it and how much they're missed.

30+ years on , daily lines from this song enter my head at certain times. Truly one of their best.
Powerful song Red. The Album Presto often gets a bad wrap, but I don't believe there is a bad Rush album. I remember when this came out, this song became an instant favourite of mine.
Thank you for calling out the hard conversational points. My favorite lyric of Rush.. prayers to you & family.
I'm so happy you got to this one. Great performance of a song that has helped so many. RUSH has always been more than music to me.
A song that you haven’t listened to yet is MANHATTAN PROJECT… the LYRICS are captivating
Tomorrow is Neil's birthday. You must do a video. Maybe watch 'The Rythem Method' drum solo (from A Show of Hands)?
* Rhythm 😉
Thank you Red. Now you know why I listen to this song every day.
RUSH, it’s a thing.

Thanks. Remarkable Rush track. The Professor had a certain gravitas.
The Professor quickly became a good poet, suggesting that poetry was perhaps his most natural talent. By 1990, Neil had become a master poet.
Thank you for reacting to this and understanding it.

I saw them open for Rush too, but on the next tour (Roll The Bones). I recall Mr. Big opening on the Presto tour, at least in Seattle.
This band; Neil's lyrics kept me going through many shitty days. It gets better!
This performance is transcendent! I'm a total Rush freak, I saw them play live 15 times. This is Rush at the height of their powers!
Wow! Geddy's voice was still in pretty good shape then! Quite the contrast to that live version of 'The Camera Eye' a few moments ago! 😬

Chef's kiss indeed..... This is one of their very best.
Alex is such a goofball when he gets on a mic, but when he sings harmony with Ged, it's magical!
My favourite RUSH Track.
Love this Album(Presto)
Keep Rocking 👍

Waited outside all night in February in Michigan a couple of times for Rush tickets back in the day.

Beautiful and deep song! One of my favorites
You should review Anagram from the same album. The lyrics are all anagrams... it's pretty awesome
Some motivational and inspirational tunes and words...from, the best band, ever. 😁
Of many songs that usually bring tears to my eyes 😢
my favourite rush song thank you!

How very sad to hear about your loss in the family, Neighbor. My sincere condolences
😌🙏
Sorry to hear about your nephew. I endorse everything you say. Well said xx
In mathematical terms...
1/2 Music + 1/2 Lyrics = Rush. Rare for a band to have both and especially to the degree Rush does.
Neil used a famous Oscar Wilde quote in this on. Also love Alex's Christ the Redeamer and Mr. Potatohead figures on his speakers.
4 in a day! 🎉❤
I lost my Son when he was 14, Rush was probably the only one of his dad's bands that he liked. And this song was one of his favorites.
A beautiful song about a very dark subject.
Neil writes about Loss in Nobody's Hero, from his personal experiences, of friends or friends tragedies.
Your a princess Red.....id hug you if I could 4 -ever!!!!
You are really gravitating towards those Presto songs ❤️🎩🪄🐇🐇
War Paint
You need to add multiple THUMBS UP buttons.
One powerful tune😢

Would like to hear your reaction to resist, the acoustic version from r30. I saw it live and it has stuck with me ever since. The regular version is great but this one is more personal. Not a side of rush we see often.
Lyrics that are relevant to this day.
Once again Neil's lyrics just dive sooooo deep!
There was a time this song saved me.
Rush, Neil's lyrics were so so good. Was about teenage suicide
Subdivisions is a great Rush song. It comments on peer pressure.
I lost a friend 29 years ago. The lyric "Christ, what have you done?" hit me a lot harder after that.
Everything from Rio is amazing!!!!!
This song got me through some shit. The lyrics are next level.
