  • Easy to build and cost effective. This is a great way to save space in your home shop. This quick change-over pedestal stand is the REAL trick! No extreme machine work, just basic metal fabricating and a bit of welding. A good Combo design!

    I was gifted a drill press foot, column and table. The head stock was destroyed in a lean and smash on a concrete floor. I repurposed all that remaind as an auxiliary support for long objects adjacent to another drill press. By adding a sheave high on the column with a cable, wire rope and counterweight, I had an easily adjustable support for long or tall items that needed to be drilled at either end. Made my life much easier. Additionally, I am a disciple of yours having built several of your lathe, drill press and milling machine accessories. Please keep those coming.

      That sounds like a great way to utilize the old drill press stand. The counter weight is a good idea. I did something similar before I put the square column on my drill press to reduce the weight of the table. It's always nice to know some of my ideas are utilized! Thanks for letting me know and thanks for the comment.

    Great idea and re-purposing of the old drill press column. I have a setup with a wire wheel on one side and buffer on the other. When using the wire wheel, say on a rusted piece of metal, debris builds up under it on the bench. You may want to consider some sort of protection for the buffing wheel that is below the wire wheel otherwise you may introduce scratching in your buffing project due to foreign particulates being embedded in the buffing wheel. Just a thought.......
    Thanks for sharing your talent.

    Nice build, I like it! I have two bench grinders and I was thinking of putting them on a rotary table back to back, but Your idea is more space saving so I may go that way instead. I could also put them direct on the wall instead of a pedestal. Hmm 🤔 Leif.

    @Winky's Workshop - Nice repurposing of the old DP column. For the rotation issue could you mill a slot on a 180 degree arc on a radius around the pivot shaft and set a indexing pin in the face of the bracket on the column. Then you could only rotate it one way and you would have a stop at each end so no fiddling with getting the table level when you change from one tool to the other. I enjoy your channel, lots of good tips and techniques.

    Dear Winky, I’ve struggled with the same difficulty - two grinders side by side each with their own foot plate and column, taking up valuable floor space. I want to add a guide plate to the grinding wheels for sharpening drills, blades and shaping steel. I may end up with a sliding mechanism up and down because my grinders are quite heavy. Thanks for showing a workable solution. Cheers.

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  4 роки тому

      You're welcome. I think a single point pivot should be okay as long as it has enough surface area. Another consideration is the weight of each grinder. Mine are the same grinder so swapping grinders is effortless. If one grinder is 10lb heavier you might have some issues. Here's an idea Make a pedestal with a table that pivots horizontally like a turn table. In other words, one grinder would be behind the column when not in use.

  • @EPaulIII
    @EPaulIII 2 роки тому

    Thanks for that great video and idea. I have been thinking about a rotating table for my two grinders but had a horizontal table with a vertical axis in mind. I think your horizontal axis is a space saver and my shop is already bursting at the seams. I would also like to add a vacuum.
    After reading some of the other comments, I am thinking that I could use pipe and pipe fittings to mount this to a wall. That would still allow it to be moved up and down.
    Another thought, if you leave the drilling of the axis hole until last, you could try to locate it so that the table assembly is closer to balanced. That way less force would be needed to rotate it.

    I don't think I would bother having it rotating just one above the other would be OK. Definitely food for thought I have umpteen bench grinders taking up bench space. Must look fer something to build a pillar. Thanks.

      If they did not rotate you would have to adjust the height. One person commented with a good idea. He said, why not a single table that rotates around the column? That would also work very nice

    What is the likelihood that metal fragments from the grinding disc will end up in the buffer pad below? Has that been a problem?

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      It happens although when you turn the buffer on and hold a piece of metal to the wheel they seem to clean up nicely.

      Admittedly I do make a lot of machine improvements, modifications etc. but I also do some machine work for my former employer (less now that I retired), I just built my 9th Wimshurst Machine (and made a video of the build), I make parts for other peoples Wimshurst Machines, I just made a high class dog bed (ha), some kitchen cabinets, a bathroom cabinet, lots of woodworking project... chest of drawers... dresser etc.. Next up is probably the south bend lathe restore and then I want to build a Buckboard Flyer replica (look it up). Oh... and I am currently working in a automatic sector cutter for the Wimshurst Machines. ua-cam.com/video/RrSKq_zn7AQ/v-deo.html

      I was thinking the same thing. This is a great space saving idea but the dust from one machine would cause issues with the bottom. Especially, with the buffing wheels. Any contamination on the wheels would cause havoc when polishing.
