Why I don't use circle hooks!!

  • www.howtofish.com.au A lot of people ask me why I don't use circle hooks. The fact is that I do use them but not often. Most of my fishing is near the city of Melbourne where there is heavy fishing pressure and the fish often don't hook themselves. The angler needs to strike into fish and circle hooks don't work with this method. Circle hooks are great where the fish will hook themselves . For more information on how to catch fish go to www.howtofish.com.au

    what most people on here dont realize that fishing is a one man sport and that man does what is best for him...it dont make him stupid or cant fish...ive never used a circle hook but i will in a few days...ive never had problems fishing and catching them....this guy was telling you what works for him..and i respect that....keep fishing and doing you....

    Your explanation in this video is good, but I use circle hooks. I never get gut hooks and if you let fish hook themselves I find very reliable and effective as well. An additional factor is that I find it easier to put baits, and keep baits on circle hooks as well.

      Hi, I agree. I use circle hooks at times but for the most part like to hook the fish myself. If you're catching fish then you're using the right hook for you. Good fishing.

    Refreshing that someone is saying it how it is. I've noticed my hook up rate is significantly better surf fishing actively with braid and J hooks after fishing for 7 years using circles. There are not many videos on J hooks, even if you type in J hook you get lots of stuff on circle hooks.

    • @carvedwood1953

      Circle hooks aren't necessarily made for better hook up ratio. They are made for mouth/lip hooks. If you are fishing catch and release, its the better option unless you don't care about gut hooking and cutting the line off and rerigging. Which I prefer not to do most times. If you are fishing for food and hook up ratio, J hook would be better. So would letting the fish completely swallow the bait so you guarantee a gut hook. For guys like me that do a lot of native fishing, where you are catching fish you absolutely don't want to keep or injure, circle hooks are superior no matter the species or how they take the bait. I will normally use either a circle hook or a barbless J hook.

    • @jaredparkes8556
      @jaredparkes8556 4 місяці тому

      Yes agreed. My point is not many people discuss the better hook up rate of J hooks. Particularly when you are fishing for food and fish are tentative on the bite, J hooks work better in my experience. Surf fishing you might only get a few chances at a hook up so want them to stick.

    I almost exclusively use circle hooks. The main reason is that they do get hooked in the corner of the mouth and then it makes for a better release. I also catch a lot of mullet on them but use a lot of berley with gents as bait.
    I do know that a lot of people like to actively fish like you and set the hook and that's fine, I just don't like gut hooking.

    The only reason i learned to use circle hooks,is for fishing tournaments. Its not lazy,its conscientous to the safety of the released fish. Yes hooks rust. But if you release a gut hooked fish ,it will die

    I sell fishing tackle in New Zealand where we have used circle hooks for centuries. They work very well with mono, because it stretches. I dont reccomend circle hooks for straylining, or for use with braid. The other huge thing with circle hooks is they should be snelled or the loop going in from the front of the hook. But you cannot catch a fish on any hook if they dont put it in their mouth.

      @@howtofish5051 I did indeed. But one thing I don't understand....
      I often get my bait eaten off circle hooks. Often I'm not aware of any action on my rod tip. Could it be that my hook is too big and that smaller fish are getting free meals without taking the whole hook???

    • @howtofish5051
      @howtofish5051  3 роки тому

      @@dougiemac8417 There could be a number of reasons for this. If the hook is too big, as you say, then the small fish will pick your bait to pieces without ever getting hooked. If the bait is too soft it can be picked off without any movement on the rod tip. If the rod is too heavy for the small fish then it won't show any tip action as the bait is picked. If you have slack line the fish can pick at the bait without any indication on the rod...or there could be other reasons. That's fishing.
      The reason I use lighter gear most of the time, which includes small hooks, is because your rod tip moves more and you see more activity. And the reason I use standard J hooks and Kirby style hooks is because I prefer to strike into fish...but I still use circle hooks at times.

      It's not that we don't know how to use circle hooks it's just that circle hooks are more for people that prefer to use a more passive lazier approach to fishing where they don't have to set the hook themselves. whereas people that prefer j hooks prefer a more active style of fishing because you actually have to set the hook yourself.
      I've been fishing for 25 years of my life and there are still certain situations where I prefer a j hook. I really only use circle hooks when I'm in a social situation fishing and talking to other people while I'm fishing and can't give my full attention to the fishing trip.

    Circle hooks vary with what fish you are going for, what bait you are using and where you are fishing. Best fish are open ocean tuna. They have big circular mouths, are not used to being fished and snatch and grab food. Circular hooks may not be as effective if your using a bait that gets between the tip of the hook and the shank. Also the fish in Port Phillip bay are very used to being fished and can be careful with what they strike at. Can gut hooking a fish mean you've taken too long to strike?

    • @howtofish5051
      @howtofish5051  2 роки тому

      You make a good point. J hooks do end up in more gut hooking if you are not watching your rod...and sometimes even when you are. Having said this both circle hooks and J hooks have their place but how frequently they are used comes down to individual angler preference. I use both but given the preference I go with J hooks.

      @@howtofish5051 What do people think about using circle hooks for flathead and snapper in heavily fished areas where the fish are used to being fished? ie piers. Circle hooks had their genesis more for open ocean pelagic fish that are not used to being fished. They snatch and grab without hesitation. Are you better off with a J hook in a heavily fished area? I guess it also depends on bait.

      The hook is in the fishes mouth either way ... setting the hook is done in both if lines are attended ..and you always get corner of the mouth so if the fish has sharp teeth you have a great chance unlike J Hooks ...and yep a good fish is to good to catch only once ..Catch and Release what you dont eat .. Fresh fish eat only as frozen doesnt compare .. More excuses to go again and again and again.. And our kids will have fish as well .. Circles you set the hook but you have to be patient and not knee jerk react ..it takes more skill, allowing a fish to swim without spooking it then when the time is right you just casually lean back and set the hooks like a rock star , most fisherman are so wired they cant resist , Using Circles are a learnt skill of a experienced angler taught to the next angler . Takes experience and timing but the rewards are worth it

    Do those hooks really rust? I don't think they do. Not in a reasonable amount of time for the fish to be okay. The hook you're showing the camera. I bet you could leave it in a glass of water for a year and go fishing with it just the same

    • @howtofish5051
      @howtofish5051  2 роки тому

      the Victorian Fishing Authority Officers recommend cutting the line on a gut hooked fish and leaving the hook to rust rather than damaging the fish by trying to remove it. Based on this and having caught fish with hooks in them I can see that they do rust. But, as you say, bigger hooks take longer to rust...however, I'm amazed at what happens to my hooks when a little water gets into my tackle box. They seem to dissolve pretty quick!
