My advice to other guitarists has always been to learn to be a chameleon. Be whatever the song needs you to be and make sure what you do blends in and is seamless. For faster songs, play aggressive (I'm not saying play metal or hard rock necessarily) and help drive the song with your rhythm section. For slow songs, make ambient tones your friends. Delays, reverbs, swells, drones, whatever can help fill holes in the sound is what you need to use. Learn how to play simplistic lead lines with your rhythm (Reckless Love has the easiest lead line to play while strumming out the chords) and do that in transitional periods like between chorus and verse. And the biggest piece of advice is to keep your foundation simple. You don't have to be a shred master or do anything complex. Less is often so much more during worship. Plus if you keep your foundational elements simple, it allows for you to build on more complex elements when the time is right and that makes for dynamic playing.
Basically: Diads, triads, open chords, ambience Also, I feel what would help the most is seeing how you create your sounds and what sounds you use for ambience and all that extra stuff that really makes the music sound good
Homie I just started playing guitar at Church. I was a guitarist for a local Spanish rock n roll band. But in minute 4:00 when you start saying of who influences us. Damnnn I'm like you right. I have a long way to go before I become a "worship" guitarist. Who I listened to coming up as a guitarist really matters. My influences. Etc. It has been a crazy trip "trying to forget all that and become a new guitarist....but after these couple of minutes I realized I cannot.....I am shaped of who I grew up with what made me get more into guitar. I'ma just have to learn how to incorporate it and become my own person as a church guitar player. Thanks dude keep doing this 🙏
This is a hidden gem, I was trying to look for content like this on Worship Tutorials but it's mostly specific song tutorials and effects. I would like if you continued by going further by explaining dyads & triads, how you use open chords and capos on other songs, etc. But in the meantime, I'll be searching from other videos in detail.
Wow love your approach to this church dilemas, I am a church musician and if we all had that mentality on how to play to serve first the Lord but the song and the situation our best we’d be better off
My Brother in Christ, this was the best version of that Song i`ve ever heard in years! Absolutely amazing and Creative in the Meaning of Creation praises the CREATOR of all Things! In that Bridge part you did not "just showing of" but you gave an hint, of how great and wonderful and creative the inventor of all Music might be... GOD BLESS YOU, and i hope my bad english did not destroy my message of love and encourage for You too much. Keep on the good work for the church and be blessed beyond all understanding from crazy Germany!
Well everyone needs to be good brother coz if someone who only knows simple chords and didn't know bar chords i think with only heart he/she will face difficulty
Magaling...this video is very informative. The dyads and triads seems simple but it can be very creative. That make the part hard. I like this video! it is a difficult Guitar made easy.
Cool shirt 440 you are in tune 👍 Like the way you call out the triad by numbers 351 vs F shape... Haven't figured out the best to think of my shapes...
that was amazing 🫢😱🤯 I love this its similar to worship tutorials yt channel in what they play with there helix6 pedal mixer. I would love to play like that if could a guitar.
Thanks for this video. Very good! With the Hillsong Y&F song you did, loved the tones. I have a POD GO. What would you suggest for finding that type of sound? The reverb and compression were just right.
I've been looking for a video like this. thank you so much!! Just started learning guitar a year ago and had no one to guide me or help me find my voice on it within the church. After watching your video i'm inspired to learn your techniques/advice and i aim to sound as good as you. Thank you again and you have most definitely earned my subscription.
Love this! looking forward to the technique lessons on maj/min triads, maj/min scales, maj/min pentatonics. There are other videos out there explaining them, but I want to learn them from Jem - especially in the context of intermediate level weekend warrior volunteer electric lead guitarists playing worship music :)
I have found that the important part in my church is singing of the audience (Catholic). We say that singing is praying twice. So the music and singers at the front are there to lead people into worship via singing. If the audience is transported and sing it's a win. There is nothing like feeling the vibration in your chest, your head and hear it resonate with all the voices of others together.
This is a nice video. I used to play for a big church but we decided to branch out and start our own little church. we're 2 years in, made progress with the size of congregation but only my brother whos on drums and I on guitar or keyboard who plays. so i find it hard to play any creative riffs while also doing the rythm.
Very cool. I am the only electric guitar in an otherwise full band. I work with incredible musicians and an amazing leader and feel so blessed to be in this situation. Our church uses one of popular subscription services to help musicians learn parts and this is fantastic for bass, drums and acoustic guitars, for example, but often there are 5 or 6 electric guitar parts per song! I use a LOT of the techniques you’ve shown to make sure the most important parts are recognizable to the congregation, but fill the needed space (where and when needed) - and my leader gives me lots of creative latitude that I try not to abuse 😂! This is such a valuable video for so many worship guitarists - we can’t all be in Elevation with 4 guitarists on stage at once!
Kaya pala familiar YT handle, mdalas nkkta kta sa His life and un excerpt mo ng specific songs haha. I also got.ideas sa inversions kay Nigel also from MGC
Great video! I do this a lot where I'm the only electric player. Actually recently for my church I was the only electric guitar player and one of the songs that we did was Champion by Bethel, and for most of the song I played chords, but when it came to the bridge part I played that lead line
Jemmuel this was a much needed video. There a lots of "how to" videos out there now showing how to play each note and chord shape. Unfortunately when you are the only guitar player you do have to play a combination of some of the rhythm parts and lead parts. Love your use of triads!
Thank you very much for this video. I'm originally a bass player and started playing guitar at my church. I play better finger style than I do with a pick. I came to the conclusion that I don't have to sound exactly like the original versions and can make it my own. Thanks for stressing this point. Also, I'm a big on using the capo. So much truth to using different voicing on the guitar. Stay blessed!!!
Hey Jemmuel! Nice guitar tones and subject approach. A friendly advice here is to pay attention and care with the metronome, where you played ahead of for almost the entire track. By the way, thanks for sharing your amazing content.
It spun my head a bit when you name dropped Hendroff and Chislett as people we look up to. Because I went to Hillsong in the 90's and those 2 guys were my guitar hero's. And literal guitar teachers. Small world.
I love that you touched on inversions and chord shapes. This is something I’ve learned over time that would’ve helped me a lot as a beginner. If you continue this series, I think focusing on comfort positions you often play scales around and how you move between triad shapes would be helpful for people. Cheers!
If there’s a really iconic piano part, IE one that you know the song just by hearing the opening piano. I try to find it on the guitar to make up for our lack of keyboard player. Then I mix that in with typical electric leads during the vocal parts.
hey, just got my first guitar today it's a knockoff like yours @4:36 same design just not as good as yours sir, juicy tone but it's not much. wanted to know how I can start learning from 0 to play in church I really want to play in church and praise God through making worship with my guitar, if you know the best UA-cam videos to follow or free courses I'd be grateful, really spent all my savings towards my guitar so can't afford a mentor or online courses. thank you this video was great, especially the hallelujah song you played at the beginning I wish to reach such a stage and play it exactly how you did in the intro!
Tell us ! Something about your faith? At the end of the day worship is not just limited to gears or something but sometimes we need to go back to the Heart Worship! I'm Blessed to all your videos brother may God Blessed you more and more!
Great video. I'd love for you to dive more into how to make the guitar in a worship song more "your own" especially if you are sick of playing the same gtr parts over and over again? Any tips/pointers to take you in that direction while still staying relevant?
Hope to meet him and Myles one day. Seems like some really down to earth guys and they are my top two favorite artists and Alter Bridge is my #1 band I listen them daily

I've been using that technique in church but I didn't know it's called diads and triads. I learned it myself while learning scales
I'm not a guitar player, my kids are...sounds awesome. I've shared it with them and I'm certain they will love it!!!
Awesome playing man. Could you do a video about the triads and diads you are using? I tend to always go back to the same triads and it gets boring

❤ amazing, no words to express, Christ is always good to you bro.
I wish I could play like this that I can play for God... 😭😭
You don't need to be that good to play for God just need your heart in tune
Well everyone needs to be good brother coz if someone who only knows simple chords and didn't know bar chords i think with only heart he/she will face difficulty

in general, there is far too much distortion in modern worship music, it’s like halfway house between metal and pop it just gives me a headache
