    Dave I see what you are getting at about VW EV prices but in fact the ID3 is almost identical size to the Golf, Polo is considerably smaller and the ID4 is about 30cm longer than the Golf.

    You’ve stated Germany selling less than the UK. Do you realise that Germany has scaled back/dropped EV incentives in Dec 23 so Q1 2024 will obviously be low. UK EV sales are propped up by fleet buyers and salary sacrifice schemes. This is not a free market, it’s an incentivised market biased towards EV’s which is understandable (net zero) but is problematic in the medium term.

    I had an ID.3 and it is a Golf comparator, more importantly, I now drive a Tesla M3 and one of the key reasons was the awful nature of VW updates and how poorly they performed in the car, some required leaving the car with the dealer just to load them. Every trip created an anticipation of error messages. The Tesla difference is like night and day. Never again shall I own a VW!

    Whilst a 'surge' of 71% in used EV sales sounds good it only accounts for some 42,000 vehicles out of a total used sales of just short of 2 million (1.967,923) used vehicles sold over that period - that's only 2% of all used car sales. If all those used EV's were replaced with new EV's then only a further 41,000 new EV's were sold to new EV buyers. You are totally correct in that prices will have to come down to make them more attractive to new car buyers.

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  7 місяців тому

      So your logic says only people with an existing EV will buy a new one? Records say 15% of all new cars sold in the first 4 months of 2024 are EVs, that's a few more than 41,000.

    • @dublodave7860
      @dublodave7860 7 місяців тому

      @@davetakesiton There were around 83,000/84,000 new EV's sold in the UK in the first quarter along with around 42,000 secondhand. It is highly unlikely that all those were sold to new buyers, quite a few of the new sales would be to replace older EV's, hence you get vehicles entering the secondhand market, although my approach was very simplistic. For EV sales to increase substantially prices have to fall. Your comments on the price difference between equivalent ICE and EV's made that crystal clear - why would anybody pay (if they can afford it) 10, 15, 20k more for an EV than for the ICE equivalent?. The Gov't requirement for EV sales to increase annually (together with the fines for excess ICE sales) does nothing to encourage manufacturers to cut prices because they know that at some point they will only be allowed to sell EV's, even though that could cause them some major falls in turnover in the short term. Some companies can carry those losses and some can't and those that can't will fail.

      I paid 28,000 for mine nearly four years ago. Expensive for a Corsa, but the alternative ICE I would have got was 27k so basically the same price, though dropping down both a segment and a manufacturer. Still driving it with 58,000 miles on the clock. Don’t feel like I made a mistake then - saving 1200 to 1500 a year on fuel. I would happily buy another at the price you mention - heck at that price I would have been happy to get a second hand one with up to 10k on the clock. It may not have the build quality of my old Golf but it gets the job done and I still enjoy it now. Only failure so far was the fan on the cab heater. I also preferred the real buttons over the e208.
      The market is much bigger these days with many other vehicles available, I’d take the opportunity to give several a test drive, maybe try an MG as well.

      I have driven VW for many years and it was my preferred brand. But the EV addition to the market, has really mixed things up. What you used to know about vehicle operation, cars and brands no longer applies quite as it used to. I get why people find it confusing and a bit scary - because it is. A car is an important and costly purchase - most people can’t afford to make a mistake here.
      I sat down and did the maths for a few months on my usage and needs and compared various vehicles (petrol and electric) by the numbers. The car that was the best fit for me at the time came out as a Corsa. I was not expecting that to be honest. I gave one a test drive and it seemed fine, so we took the chance. The calculated numbers have matched reality so I am satisfied. I would always prefer VW build quality over Vauxhall but VW was out of my budget plus they were having software issues that put me off.
      If you can charge at home and are honest to yourself on your usage needs and with your numbers when you do your sums, if a Corsa or similar EV seems to make sense for you it probably will. If you do 300 miles driving a day though, probably not 😉
      If you need to know about real world ranges under various conditions then I highly recommend the EV Database UK website. I have found their range numbers for various driving types and weather conditions are a good match for reality. That is what I used to assess my needs and they did not let me down.

      Not a Corsa, but a friend of mine got an MG4 pre-reg for under £20k this month. Running it for virtually nothing with a 3-pin home charger and 7 year warranty. I think any deal on an EV where you’ve got a huge chunk of the depreciation off and virtually new is a great deal.

    The ID3 is pretty much the same length as the Golf and is it's competitor within the VW brand - although it has almost the same interior volume as the Passat!
    The problem with the ID3 (originally) is they had so many pre-orders for them, they needed to release it (even though the date had been extended somewhat) with poor software!
    There were also some quality issues, such as cheaper plastics in the interior over what the Golf offered etc!
    Many of us Golf drivers were looking forward to the ID3 but then we're disheartened by the product they released, which is why I went Korean and probably won't look back!?
    There is a comparison to the Golf coming out, suggested as the ID2, it looks like a great car - hopefully the software is sorted out by then!
    VW's range of EV's has other problems in the haptic button over use and the feeling that they were designed by accountants rather than the car mad engineers! The Golf, of course, being the original mass market quality hatchback and eventual hot hatch! The ID3 seemed somewhat soulless!?
    Also, the only thing wrong with the compliance car e-Golf was it's smaller battery and slow charge rate with no proper thermal battery management!
    Its software was fine. So why VW decided to go off on another tangent with the ID cars, is beyond me!?
    Of course, this is broken Britain and we're out of the EU now, so anything €20k in Europe will cost £20k in the UK! There won't be an exchange rate lowering of the price!
    Just about every EV based channel says about this £17k equivalent! I'm guessing they've never bought say, a bike costing upwards of 2 grand? It will be a price of say £2k, €2k and $2k!

    Good content overall. But you confused the Toyota European only sells with the global figure. Being the biggest car manufacturer, Toyota sells around a million cars every month worldwide. Much smaller brands like BMW and Mercedes (in terms of sells volume) - sell around 180 - 200,000 every month worldwide. EV's maybe the future and for a good reason, but the way they are forced with massive subsidies and restrictions for everything else, all for a very questionable CO2 emission war - that is what many people hate. If it were only for the clean air in cities - why they plan to ban Hybrids as well, which are pretty clean in cities? And much more straightforward and hassle-free vehicle to use.

    Of course second hand EV sales are up significantly. This is a market that was virtually non-existent 10 years ago, and only became a market to speak of in the last two years, as second hand EVs became available in any significant amount. And of course, the sudden rise in second hand EVs will have an impact on new EV sales. Imagine if that happened with ICE vehicles.
    This shows that there Is Demand for EVs. It also shows that there is a demand for lower priced EVs which have been promised but scarcely delivered by manufacturers.
    Manufacturers made a bunch of high end EVs, capturing a specific sector of buyer, but few have offered anything else. Some buyers have gone to the used market, but many more are still waiting on the long promised affordable EV. In the mean time, they are buying ICE and PHEV vehicles, further skewing the numbers.

      I do agree the list price disparity still exists between a Golf and ID3 although not as great as the comparison you make.

      @davetakesiton, surely the concern has to be whether fleet sales will continue at their current rate if they are facing 50-60% depreciation. If they start to scale back you then have lacklustre new sales which may push up 2nd hand values, making both unaffordable to a lot of people.

It is almost certain that all cars after 2035 will be EV, but in the interim EV are not perfect especially with regard to range and cost. Toyota by being heavy on Hybrids are buying themselves time to produce EV that are more acceptable and in the meantime are generating huge profits to fund the research and developments that are required to continue their No 1 spot

If that doesn’t suit you or fit with what you need from a car that’s fine, there is absolutely no pressure to get an EV.
