I got into uni after struggling with my mental health during my alevels and consequently not doing well in them after taking an overdose the week before exams started. I then went to college and did a BTEC and then took a year out and kind of decided I would never go to uni but 2 months ago I decided to just try to get in through clearing and I actually did it and am now going to study law!

I feel like a lot of young people aren’t keen on the traditional idea of working ‘9-5’, idk why but for me working ‘9-5’ is something I’m really looking forward to as well as the professional office environment lol.

I dont mind a 9-5 as long as its doesnt involve being a slave to capitalism or supporting the capitalist machine. I am studying to be a research scientist, which is generally 9 -5

Hi Eve! I’m a journalism student going into my final year at uni and here are a few things I’ve picked up on from what my tutors/previous students have said...
    - experience over a masters is seen as a better route for employability. There are so many placement programmes that you can apply for that allow you to practice and develop your journalism skills. The BBC do a couple of good ones! Alternatively you can ask your university for updates on placements around your area? My university offers this and emails me every month with current opportunities. I’m sure there would be a supervisor willing to help
    you with this?
2 weeks at Sky News and your UA-cam channel is amazing but employers look for a LOT of experience, even as a freelance journalist you need experience behind you. It’s a stressful career to be in, trust me, you’re constantly surrounded by competition so you need that experience behind you. You have a really good twitter following and if I was in your shoes I would be using it as an advantage to tweet/dm ppl working in the broadcasting industry to set up some work experience. You have to bombard them, there’s no other way!
    - I would look into doing the NCTJ if you’re serious about journalism. If anything, being accredited is much more employable than having a masters and not being accredited.
    - if you still want to do a masters then just make sure you’re getting that experience still, while you can! There’s plenty of time yet.
    - BUY “McNae’s Essential Law For Journalists”, it’s basically the journalism bible. As much as a career in journalism is exciting, you have to be aware of the laws surrounding what you can and cannot say. It’s better to be prepared now than when you’re working with a broadcasting company and accidentally slip up... that can lose you a job.
    - Freelance journalism is a TOUGH career to get into. Be prepared for a lot of hours of dedication and missing payments. Nonetheless, if it will make you happy in the long run it’s worth it! Use the platform you’ve got now to get started!
    Hope this helps 🙂

Hi Eve, I’m a TV Producer in London, and also went to Oxford. In terms of career advice I would say do it: it’s a great career. But if you think you’ll be able to choose what hours you work you’re definitely headed towards the wrong profession. TV dictates your working hours and not you I’m afraid and believe me they are long and it never gets any easier. It’s a rewarding career though for those who can tough it out.

    • @lifeisbeautifuldarlinimlovinit

Hello! How did you become a TV producer?

    • @mollflower725
      @mollflower725 3 роки тому

@@lifeisbeautifuldarlinimlovinit like everyone you have to start from the bottom as a runner, picking up bits of work here and there and building up your cv, doing other work like temping in between to pay the bills. It is incredibly competitive so you have to be laser focused if you want to make a career in it. Doing some work experience initially helps too then it’s just a case of bombarding companies with your cvs and looking for runner or receptionist roles on online job sites until you’ve managed to break in. Good luck!

Journalism looks at experience, not degrees. A masters won’t give you an edge over someone who has been on an apprenticeship at the BBC for the past 2years :(

Hey Eve! I'm currently doing a Masters in International Relations but with the long-term goal of heading into journalism/political communications. I think it's a great career option and your language skills will be so useful. I've done modules in French/Spanish at uni to use them in jobs abroad if I decide to move from the UK to Spain or France. If you're interested in foreign affairs but also journalism, some organizations (NGOs etc.) often look for communications interns so you can work on your writing skills and also use UA-cam and other platforms to report on the work of that particular organization (write articles, take photos, edit videos). Not sure if it's something you're interested in :)

I envy people who have a "vocation" and know what they want to do as a job since they were little.
I had a more difficult process, and i'm still a bit uncertain.
I thought i wanted to be a doctor (because my immigrant parents didn't understand other jobs existed).
I didn't get in (luckily) and then did International Relations and Sustainable Development... wich i discovered i wasn't really interested in... but i did such eterogeneous subjects during that degree, that it allowed me to be very flexible with my master's choice. So now i'm doing a Masters in Environmental Economics. And there are still many many career paths i could do after I finish. And i don't know what i want. But i still have a year.
Also, for anyone feeling lost, remember that careers are evolving. This aren't our parents times, where you do a job all your life. We can change paths, try different things, new jobs are beeing created, our world will change. So don't worry. Chances are that if you ARE asking yourself this questions about your future, you are determiend enough to make any choiche you pick work. You'll be fine.

omg me too , I have literally changed my career plans a 1000 times. I'm only about to start sixth form in a few weeks and I feel the pressure from my parents to take a career path that would lead me straight into a job like working in finance or other traditional career path. While I am interested in economics and plan on doing it for a level, I don't see myself working in the financial sector at the moment therefore I have picked other subjects such as geography, english (might swap for politics A-level) and spanish. However my parents keep telling me that those subjects will lead me nowhere and that I should draw a line between reality and my passions. Right now I am thinking of doing a language degree in spanish and another foreign language as I am bilingual already (french and english), so languages come quite easily to me, then I'll probably do a master in something like International Relations or something that allows to talk about worldwide issues

Two of my best friends are freelance (one is a journo in digital, the other a writer, and we’re in our 30s, don’t ask me why Eve’s videos were recommended to me but they’re great!). The unpredictability of sourcing work, clients not paying bills on time (and the tax implications of that!), the actual pay itself (poor), never switching off for the constant hustle and lack of work/leisure divide.. it’s not without its major challenges. But Eve’s UA-cam might open doors and opportunities, so who knows, it might work for her.
Eve, I recommend finding a mentor working in media/journalism while you’re still at uni and taking up every internship you can. Look into alumni networking through your college as well, make the most of the Oxford connections 😊

English lang/lit was probably my niche during my school years and I was adamant about using my skills in English in the future, but year 11 prolly sparked my interest in sciences & I took the chance and decided to do A-levels in all three sciences and thankfully I ended up with A*A*A & now Im studying Biomedical Sciences which I absolutely love. In all honesty I prolly won’t work as a Biomedical scientist and Im kinda aiming towards postgrad vet medicine but I wouldn’t be surprised if my career plans change.

The whole thing about maths is so true like I’ve always been good at maths I got a 9 and A^ in gcse maths like you did but I was absolutely shit at A level maths just because I found it so boring. PLEASE don’t do A level maths just because it’s easy at gcse if you don’t like it. Honestly even if you’re not that naturally good at maths you can do well if you put work in but I had no motivation at all this year to revise it lol glad I’m dropping it.

I found the whole maths thing so interesting because I went absolutely the other way! I have such a natural ability for History and English, they're subjects I absolutely love doing and I was so sure that I was going to go to uni to study a combined History and English degree, with a future in international relations (since I speak French and German fluently as well). December of Year 11, I did a complete U-Turn and walked into my guidance counselor's meeting and went "right, I want to do Higher Level Physics, Maths and Chemistry" it's been absolutely hell (especially with higher level maths) but two years later I've come away with 776 43 in my IB and I'm off to Southampton in a week to study Physics with Astronomy and Space Science! Somedays I wonder what life would've been like if I had done History and English (definitely was beating myself up after my Oxford rejection in January) but the opportunities and careers open to me (especially with the growing space sector) are just so exciting, I can't regret that. Always follow your passions! Not just what you're good at. :)

I was always pushed towards maths because I was good at it, then I realised languages was my calling and focussed on going into diplomacy too. A German/Spanish graduate, an economics graduate, a science graduate and an engineering graduate are at a table in a restaurant. The science graduate asks "Will it work?", the engineering graduate asks "can we build it?", the economics graduate asks "can we sell it on for a profit?" and the german/spanish language graduate asks "Can i take your order please?"
    Just kidding, all the best
