- With the temperatures dropping and everything freezing over the only option was to hit the river in search of big pike! The aim this session was to use some of the biggest lures in the shed to "go big or go home" in an attempt to catch some of the biggest fish in the river!

The moment Im thinking Noooooo - not on ice.... And womp. down you went. Only in my case it was a BSA 650 - about a half century ago when I was young and limber. (Not so limber now!) Even at zero speed these things are hard to laugh it, unless you have a witness - then the pressure of manning-it-up clicks in.

Change your bait
My advice would be fish slower and bigger (if the canal is suited to bigger lures)
A 16cm (nothing massive by any stretch) curly tail bait on a light screw in jig head can be an easy (and cost effective) way to fish slower moving water.
Then I'd suggest sticking to natural colours like silver with some contrast - these tend to work on a wider variety of conditions and water quality if you're struggling to pick stuff up that you'd normally think would work

He reads predator fish better than anyone I've seen (Maybe Mick the pikeman but he's on TV) Amazing in the comp as well. Really looking forward to the next stages in the Netherlands.
The biggest Pike I have caught was 10 kg On a really thin line my line was only 12 mm I spent 45 minutes to getting it ashore keep up the god work 💯

Hands up if never slipped on ice before I'm glad he put it the clip in there are to many glossy UA-cam vids just showing catch after catch when we all know that's not the reality of fishing accidents broken rods days when you blank all part of it

Great job. Some great fish. I do exactly the same thing with the drunk dancer and a weighted semi-boyant head. You can buy the actual MM "tails" for about half the price of the DD though their tail movement isnt quite as nice.. The larger DD is one of my favourite lures for fishing slow for bigger fish, but the longevity of them can be an issue if the pike get a good hit on the tails, a pain given theyre nearly £10 a pop for a soft bait.

I clipped the end of an over hanging tree a few sessions back ant snapped the end section. Of my rod ...also cut through my braid and sent my otus flying into the lake.. 😢 that was my Xmas pressy gone ...
I’ve been a fisherman since my childhood starting on noddy bashing and then on to carp when it was good times can’t stand it now industry flooded wiv money making stuff so annoying. So I’ve turned to lure fishing on the rivers wiv a small rod and nothing much else. Wat I’ve come to realise is it doesn’t matter wat lure you use they all catch. I hope lure fishing doesn’t become the pollution of carp fishing just fish guys don’t listen to to much it all works. Not to say i dont love the ginger fisherman hes one of the good ones
I broke three fly rods last season, so I feel your pain. I managed to get replacement parts for two of them, but not until I had bought two new rods. That's how I got them past the missus.

If you use the Hindsight function in GoPro, it only lasts for the first 15 minutes and then the camera goes into normal rest mode and you have to press the record button to record the material

Have you ever had a Marius mouse and have you ever caught on it because I have never caught any with it and I spent about 30 plus for it
I watched your casting technique on the three casts as you broke the rod and it was a pretty violent cast you were performing with quite a heavy lure. You don't need telling by now to keep your cast gentle and follow through with the rod, especially with heavy lures. We all make mistakes and I did that too once with a Shaky feeder rod casting a feeder that was on the limits of what the rod could take. Sure enough, it snapped too just above the ferrule, which is typically where a 2-piece rod will break. Still, you have enough rods and money to buy a new one. 😆
Not too sure about that mate. Have you thrown big baits on those abu beast rods before by any chance? They're rock solid

Carbon fibre doesn't like flexing too much when it's bloody freezing.......................I've had two match rods in the past break just like that. Just my opinion...

Drunk dancers are a good lure but only expect 1 or 2 pike per lure as they damage way to easy.
