Ι I am happy with the joy of the friends of fantasy titles but it is time now after the Warhammer3 to give us a good historical title. And by historical, I do not mean Jean-Arc chasing dragons or Napoleon playing karate with a Chinese general.
You kind of forgot about Medieval 2's expansions. They were kind of awesome. Plus, it has the most active modding community that I know of (LOTR mod, Stainless Steel, etc and weird stuff like Planet Wars).
Three Kingdoms was my first ever TW title quickly followed by Warhammer 2. I've got to say, I am still flummoxed by how so many models can fit on my screen without it blowing up in my face. When Warhammer 3 came out, I cried. This studio has something really special and I will be keeping a close eye on their future titles. I hope they use Warhammer 3 as a testing grounds for new mechanics for their next games. One thing I would love to see is an updated version of their naval battles. I think I read somewhere they aren't allowed to have them for their Warhammer titles which is a shame, but I'd love me some naval battles. Perhaps a Pirates of the Carribean like title following mythical sea tales of piracy throughout the entire world. Just spit-balling. Either way, Im excited for what they make next.
Interestingly enough, Total War is what got me interested in finance. Played Rome 1 back in the day, managing my empires finances and organizing armies really helped my. Oddly enough grade 10 onwards my grades improved dramatically. I'm not sure how much I can attribute it to Rome 1 but something in this game "clicked", I had played RTS' before, but that doesn't compare to the amount of management needed for the scale of total war (at the time at least, prior to the competitors).
They should put more finance mechanics in total war! E.g. taking on debt to build your infrastructure and military, with challenging consequences if you struggle to repay the loans
Historical gameplay will always be my favorite thing about the TW franchise. I really enjoyed the mechanics and scale of Empire, and would like to see a true sequel. I also love Rome 2 and a third installment would be great just so they can incorporate the new tech and all that they've learned since the previous release. But my BIGGEST hope is that now that they have proven their ability to handle beloved fictional IP with the due diligence and respect of the fans, to see a TW that spans an entire galaxy far, far away! To trade naval battles for space, a campaign map that is truly 3-dimensional, and ground combat that can have heroes wielding lightsabers alongside blaster shooting rank and file would be amazing!
I really hope CA would bring back 19th century historical total war. Focusing on some famous wars after post-napoleonic era all the way to early WW1 warfare. That would be epic.
Fantastic video! I've only ever played he original Total War: Rome, something I've re discovered recently, and am keen to explore the franchise. This was a great gateway into doing that!
Three Kingdoms Total War was perhaps the last total war game to be more historical authentic(Because The Romance of the 3 Kingdoms fictional novel was also based on historical Records as well), everything else will be either half history or full fantasy. I doubt CA will ever make Medieval 3. Now, I would rather prefer them to make a Sci Fi Total War game inspired by Alpha Centauri and Civilisation Beyond Earth game by Feraxis.
This is a great video, but it does skip over some of the Sega/CA antics that caused issues with earlier games. Stuff like making some multiplayer units exclusive to buying the game from a specific brick and mortar store (TW Napoleon) and putting redshell (essentially spyware) into Warhammer early on. Those things are no longer issues thankfully. :)
I started with Medieval I Total War; found the game in a LAN shop (this was early 2000's, when it was a thing). Got hooked, and bought the Gold Edition some years later. Really hope to get Medieval 3 next; that's the best time period for me.
This is a great documentry on the history of my favorite series. Well done. I still wish they would make Victorian Total War, with advances like smokeless gunpowder, and breach loading cannons.
I'd love to see a 15th-16th century shot and pike era, having a mix of both viable melee and archery units being challenged but the ever growing and evolving firearm, having the slow progression from handguns(mini cannon on a stick) and Arquebus being held up by the little fork stands, some nations having spear like ends for melee combat all the way up to well proper muskets and bayonets, with archers being more nimble and probably hunters can move and have vanguard deployment and musketeers having more damage/armor pen, but are slower and cause blinding smoke from prolonged fighting.
Total War is easily my favourite gaming franchise! :p I've been playing the games from as young as like 9 years old :D I'm now 20 and while I'm not playing as much as I used to and haven't gotten too familiar with the Warhammer part of the games, I'm really eager to see what they do next!
The irony about this video title is that CA doesnt care about history anymore, and has completly abandoned that part of the fanbase with poorly executed titles like Rome 2 (which is still a mess after 5y of bugfixing), Brittania and Three Kingdoms (where the historical option is extremely feature ridden). I have no problem with Warhammer titles, they just dont interest me. All I wish is that CA would actually put the same amount of effort in historical titles. Shogun 2 was the last real historical gem.
Grew up sitting behind my brothers as they played Rome: Total War for their history class. When I was like 8 I was finally allowed to play it and I have been a fan ever since.
i would love to see a sequel to medieval... there is so much that happened in that time period and with their current tech it can be amazing. Also as a goal going into a ww1 type of total war. With gameplay testing and research im sure they could do it, trench building, tanks, biplanes, zepelins, naval warfare ect.... It could be done but its a massive undertaking since there are alot of things that would be new for a total war game.
My first Total War game was Medieval 1 back in 2004. I was in Iraq and brought a laptop exclusively for this game when we had some hours off back inside base. It was playing a war inside a war.
My most liked is Three Kingdoms as there was alot of micro management which I like, and the UI and everything I was very comfortable with, Troy on the other hand was not as nice, as it just felt weird, dunno why
Even though they aren't official total war games, I think it would've been cool to include some of the total conversion mods that expanded the life of certain titles. Like how 3rd age total war pretty much has stood the test of time and is super fun even to this day.
Its Nice to see the the history of total war but it kinda makes me a little sad to se how the New history Games have become mediocre and makes me want to Get a medival three on pare with TWWH graphics but the WH series was one of the best beside the the old ones so its Nice to learn how we came to where we are now (but i have kinda Get a little bit bored at all the :the TWWH series are po poh: but they have a point when it comes to the New ones a little) but still good video
A little heavy comment but not all New TW game are bad 3K wasent that bad and the TWWH series was some of the best butte need a New medival game or a empire 2 game
@@Marthe535 3K had all the faults of modern TW games: bad battles that are HP blobs hitting the air, op magic, broken balance through difficulty nerfing only your melee infantry, single entity units, longer an dlonger loading times with each patch, terrain having no big influence, countless obsolete units on the upside the campaign mechanics especially diplomacy was a big step up, beautiful artstyle and music although the settlement mechanics force you into certain expansions and the building only one building at a time was atrocious, also having to conquer 100s of minor settlements with full garrisons through the mid and late game grinded campaigns to a snails pace
As someone who's been playing Total War games since Rome Total War on my gran's Windows 98 PC this was such a great video! I hope they eventually make a Total War: Rome III, but fail to see how they could add substantial new content into another Roman map. A quest into South American history would also be very interesting with the likes of the Inca Empire??
This was a really nice history. I’ve been playing all the titles recently, collecting some titles I missed so that I have them all on Steam. I absolutely love this series. Like the narrator, my entry to the series was the excellent Rome. The period I’m missing is America’s Civil War. I’d love to see how Total War handles this.
If you haven't heard of it, check out Grand Tactician: The Civil War. Released in 2020, it is a sandbox like Total War. Still is being worked on but looks cool.
If you weren't a Warhammer fan before TWW you have no idea how crazy and exciting it was to see a real, official Total War Warhammer game announced. Warhammer mods for Medieval 2 and a few other Total War games were around but I never thought we'd get a real Warhammer collaboration. 7 years later and I can say the Total War Warhammer games are some of the best and most enjoyable games I've ever played. Exactly the games teenaged me would have killed for 15 years ago.
I’d like to see an Empire2 or Victoria Age. Late late game having navies like shogun2, naval bombardment and amphibious assaults on ports. Increased power of forts to create areas of attrition and being so advantageous that attacker needs treachery, politics, huge superiority or build trenches while besieging for many turns, increasing the possibility of a relief army coming. Separate units into professional armies led by generals and weaker militia units confined to regions with governors. Make more trade regions and increase the threat of piracy or unhappy units or regions turning pirate. Increase the significance of logistics, armies must have supply lines, or steal food, ammo, horses for various public order or diplomatic penalties. Big warships must use press gangs to keep crew levels up. For all TW games, discourage corner camping by making a perimeter zone that stationary units placed inside will suffer morale penalties or slowly have men desert. General are immune and maybe even draw peasants to build barricades if the attacker doesn’t attack.
Here is short history of TW: At start the history was GREAT, then after the Middle Ages, it turned first bad, then worse. And has not improved since. The End.
@@cheeto6057 This is not about truth, dude. History has been usually written by stronger, by winners. This is the case even more during ancient times. But even today, Russia is at the moment writing down it’s own story of Urkrainian provocations, that will ”force to Russia into war.”
Thank god for total war and the hugely positive impact it had and still has in my life.. It made me a better historian and helped build friendships that last to this day.. Shout out to Warhammer as well, the 40k version is more my cup of tea but I love the franchise
There was a podcast some months ago with CA designers, they said that they were ready to start the development of a Total war 40k WH, and that it can happen. At this point i believe is going to probably be announce the next year or at the end of this one, because of the massive profits and also a good opening to new warfare eras. Speciall because if they manage to pull a solid 40k, there is litttle to no reasson why a WW1 and WW2 total war shouldn't happen.
They already have tanks and planes in Warhammer today, not to mention machine guns and Skaven (who fight like WW1 infantry). They can already make WW2 Total War with the existing engine.
I don't think that it will really fit in the concept. Total War is about battles and wars, while GoT is about politics, schemes, battle for the throne, court, etc.
Loved the video and even though it never passed testing phase I think Arena would've been worth mentioning. It had a cool spin on mp strategy and the unit upgrade system is definitely worth incorporating into other titles.

A fundamental Conclusion: This video misses a huge aspect of TWs history. A segment dedicated to these changes would be big "+" in my honest opinon.
My favourite has definitely been Shogun 2, that game is a masterpiece!
I love how in Shogun 2 every unit has a role, you can still win using ashigaru against a monk or samurai unit, it is greatly balanced. My favorite
@@andreguimaraes4355 yeah unlike 3K where you have like 5-7 spearmen units in the tech tree with 2 even having worse stats then the one that has no requirement
Except the battle AI, total war has had issues with it for ages, but Shogun2 have some of the most derpy moments when commanding units.
@@berno8535 nah I have 5000hrs on S2 the AI mostly keeps the entire Army in a good formation and takes an advantagous position on the highground
downsides:
- siege AI doesnt settleout or adjust to your ranged units (just as in every TW game)
- being too aggressive with the general
- charging cavalry into spears
not recognizing and using ranged advantage/disadvantage until it lost all rnaged units (just like in all TW WH titles)
it does flank with cavalry and doesnt blob up as much as in WH
in summary I don't see it beeing worse then the "newest" WH2 AI
worst spot should be held by Empire 2 AI walking gun units into your units (not even charging)
@@maxmustermann-zx9yq empire AI is terrible. Such a shame, because I really like the game, if it had a good AI it would be fantastic
THIS IS A GLORIOUS video WORTHY OF ROMAN likes (clang).
Ι I am happy with the joy of the friends of fantasy titles but it is time now after the Warhammer3 to give us a good historical title.
And by historical, I do not mean Jean-Arc chasing dragons or Napoleon playing karate with a Chinese general.
Oh god... You're gonna jinx us all. If Fate: Total War becomes a reality I swear I'll hunt you down and sacrifice your soul to Skarbrand.
@@andrewsuryali8540 oh god i can take wh but fate? 🤮🤮
You kind of forgot about Medieval 2's expansions. They were kind of awesome. Plus, it has the most active modding community that I know of (LOTR mod, Stainless Steel, etc and weird stuff like Planet Wars).
Crusader and Teutonic campaigns 🙌
I still play medieval 2 total war, love playing as the Middle Ages version of the Roman Empire.
Total war defines my life, at least my spare time life 😁, Never have I put so many hours into any single game franchise as I do with total.
I want Empire 2 Total War 😎
I'd love to see Empire 2 set from 1754 (French and Indian War) to 1905 (Russo-Japanese War).
I won’t lie though the concept and how Three Kingdoms turn out make me want them to do Imjin War
Thank you Michael Simpson for the best electronic experiences I've ever had
Fantastic video! I've only ever played he original Total War: Rome, something I've re discovered recently, and am keen to explore the franchise. This was a great gateway into doing that!
Total war series changed my life almost as much as Sid Meier’s Civilization did.
Anyone else hoping for an Empire 2, first one was so underrated.
It certainly has the most potential for expandion
1:19 is that some Dungeon Keeper soundtrack? You sir have earned my sub
Having historians use a strategy game to reenact battles is an amazing idea for a show I wish they still did that
I'd love to see a 15th-16th century shot and pike era, having a mix of both viable melee and archery units being challenged but the ever growing and evolving firearm, having the slow progression from handguns(mini cannon on a stick) and Arquebus being held up by the little fork stands, some nations having spear like ends for melee combat all the way up to well proper muskets and bayonets, with archers being more nimble and probably hunters can move and have vanguard deployment and musketeers having more damage/armor pen, but are slower and cause blinding smoke from prolonged fighting.
Shogun 2 still holds up amazingly
Total War is easily my favourite gaming franchise! :p I've been playing the games from as young as like 9 years old :D I'm now 20 and while I'm not playing as much as I used to and haven't gotten too familiar with the Warhammer part of the games, I'm really eager to see what they do next!
A series based on the silmarillion of LOTR would be the most amazing thing ever 😳
Well there are mods...
Man, imagine Total war Dune.
Are there that many factions though?
@@Portaldog I'm sure CA can figure out a different new game mechanic to compensate for that.
I hope the next historical game will be about the thirty years war.
Yes-yes, need more of these video-flashies!
Total War is the greatest RTS franchise we ever get. Fufill the dream of patricipating in battle we often see in movie
I thought by now I would see a Medieval 3 total war in this list... what a shame...
Minor mistake, but Rise of the Republic was the latest campaign pack to be released, not Empire Divided.
Keeping in mind many problems, Atilla is my favorite total war game.
There is a dark time-line where CA never leaves EA... I'm glad we got this time-line
EA? I thought they were Activision, prior to Sega.
Shogun 2 is my favourite. But Attila and Napoleon deserve respect, they are the most underrated games in the series.
11:10 As a Dutchie we got cover art of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, very cool detail!
I think mods for medieval2 were worth mention
My most liked is Three Kingdoms as there was alot of micro management which I like, and the UI and everything I was very comfortable with, Troy on the other hand was not as nice, as it just felt weird, dunno why
Troy mechanics went back to the clunky Rome 2 at release mechanics, completely outdated with the QoL and deep features of modern games.
Even though they aren't official total war games, I think it would've been cool to include some of the total conversion mods that expanded the life of certain titles. Like how 3rd age total war pretty much has stood the test of time and is super fun even to this day.
Third age total war is one of my favourite all time total wars. Amazing game and it's not even an official game.
@@Marthe535 3K had all the faults of modern TW games: bad battles that are HP blobs hitting the air, op magic, broken balance through difficulty nerfing only your melee infantry, single entity units, longer an dlonger loading times with each patch, terrain having no big influence, countless obsolete units
on the upside the campaign mechanics especially diplomacy was a big step up, beautiful artstyle and music although the settlement mechanics force you into certain expansions and the building only one building at a time was atrocious, also having to conquer 100s of minor settlements with full garrisons through the mid and late game grinded campaigns to a snails pace
That's why after Rome 2 my interest shifted completely towards Paradox games. Never went back to TW since then.
18:35 rise of the republic was released on August 9, 2018 which makes it the last pack to be released for total war Rome 2
@@irishleonidas2274 Thanks my friend. I will.
Played since Rome, lots of good memories.
Medieval II, Empire, and Rome II are my favorites.
lets not forget they dumbed down the actual battlefield tactic and chose to make the "stats" aspect of the game more impotant than it actually is
I’d like to see an Empire2 or Victoria Age.
Here is short history of TW:
At start the history was GREAT, then after the Middle Ages, it turned first bad, then worse.
And has not improved since.
The End.
Not true at all
@@cheeto6057 This is not about truth, dude.
I would love to see a video like that on the Might and magic franchise with the rpg and the strategy games both.
I still have my old big box copies of these games. But now I play them on Steam, Rome & Empire are still in my top 10 games of all times.
Well put and very informative video 👌
Love this franchise so much !!
The first concept I'd been hoping for even as a mod was Watership Down: Total War.
Rome 2 is still my favourite. A complete masterpiece. Although I also really enjoy the Warhammer series.
But I'm looking forward to Medieval 3.
If only we'd get a Victoria or Empire 2 TW next
There was a podcast some months ago with CA designers, they said that they were ready to start the development of a Total war 40k WH, and that it can happen. At this point i believe is going to probably be announce the next year or at the end of this one, because of the massive profits and also a good opening to new warfare eras. Speciall because if they manage to pull a solid 40k, there is litttle to no reasson why a WW1 and WW2 total war shouldn't happen.
They already have tanks and planes in Warhammer today, not to mention machine guns and Skaven (who fight like WW1 infantry). They can already make WW2 Total War with the existing engine.
thank you so much for this just what the doctor ordered
Rome 2 and Attila are so good, I have both here in my computer, I hope that one day they make Rome 3.
I'm literally begging for Empire 2 over here
I want to see an epic Total War, covering a much longer timeline with a full world map.
Rome Remastered is so underrated...
I remember buying the OG Shogun in Elementary School… it inspired me to become somewhat of a history buff
Used to love playing those that worked, frustrated those like Vikings that didn’t. DESPERATELY seeking advice what Mac and games will run on them.
Thanks, good stuff! Now I wanna play. Just need a better pc and to become unemployed….
Well done on the video! Didn't mention Fall of the Samurai though :(
One of the top 3 best Strategy game series out there imo, which includes TW, Civ, and Paradox games.
A Game of Thrones Total War is something I would totally be interested in.
I don't think that it will really fit in the concept.
Total War is about battles and wars, while GoT is about politics, schemes, battle for the throne, court, etc.
How I learned history when I was a kid: Playing Civilization, Assassin's Creed:, and Total War.
Really?
and age of empires surely
Total War: Middle Earth and Total War: Westeros will be epic
Loved the video and even though it never passed testing phase I think Arena would've been worth mentioning. It had a cool spin on mp strategy and the unit upgrade system is definitely worth incorporating into other titles.
