Embracing Mother Nature On The Sheep Farm: Finding Harmony In Farming

  • Warm fall weather has meant that the hay has kept growing, so today, despite us thinking it was over for the year, the push to get another crop of third-cut alfalfa hay harvested started again. As always in farming, it is a race against nature as we need this hay cut, raked, and baled before it rains or freezes. Seldom do we cut hay in October, so we were out of bale wrap and we had to borrow some from a fellow farmer.
At his farm, we discovered that we weren't alone having problems with cats and kittens on the farm as we were greeted by a whole slew of cats who looked amazingly similar to our cats. People don't realize the problems barn cats can be for farmers and commonly drop off unwanted cats in the country assuming, I guess, that farmers need cats on their farms. Nothing is farther from the truth as cats can carry diseases to livestock and they have several litters a year. But, we don't have the heart to kill them so end up having to feed them and try to catch and neuter/spay them which is difficult and extremely costly. This is not a problem caused by nature but by irresponsible people.
Back at Ewetopia Farms, we discovered four vultures circling the lamb pasture and sitting on the fence posts. Vultures usually mean something is dead or dying. We hadn't seen our barn cat Slade today so we were worried it was him. Upon inspection of the sheep paddocks, we were unable to find any remains. Hopefully, Slade will be back in the sheep barn tomorrow. Vultures play an important role in nature by getting rid of carrion and the risk of diseases caused by decaying flesh so we are glad they are around. However, we always hope it is not one of our animals that they are cleaning up.
As sheep farmers, we have to learn to work alongside nature and sometimes she can be a savior to our crops and other times it is like she wants to destroy us. Either way, mother nature must be respected and nurtured for us to survive on this planet.

Cool, he will look awesome on the flower on the barn! like he's crawling to get a bite to eat, but you won't have to worry about your flower having bite marks in it because it's metal! ha ha

Lynn, those vultures look like turkey vultures which migrate south. Maybe they stopped for a nightly rest on your fence posts. 😉
Goodness, nine cat cats at the neighbours! What is wrong with people constantly dropping them at farms? That said, I loved the little Tabby. 🐈
Wow, that hay looks rich! Definitely money in the bank, Arnie. 😉
Pippy is getting so tame. I’m thinking he’ll be easy to transition to the house. Speaking of which, how’s Buddy?

Vultures and buzzards are actually pretty interesting members of Mother Nature's cleanup crew. How they can sense a meal from afar is almost supernatural. I remember one winter in Florida when we were getting our 2 year Olds ready for the next racing season. Castrating colts was part of the process for some individuals. We would sedate and cast them onto a small paddock for the Vet to do his work. The sky could be cloudless without a single bird of any kind in sight. But within a few minutes of a horse being on its side, still on the ground, one buzzard would magically appear overhead. Circling and watching. A few more minutes and there would be a dozen. Since nothing was dead or bleeding at that point, it's obvious they have eyesight as sharp as any raptor.
