Breeding Registered Ewes With Single Rams To Ensure Lamb Parentage Traceability

- At Ewetopia Farms, we raise registered Suffolk and Poll Dorset sheep, and as such, each breeding group of ewes is mated with a single breeding ram who is unrelated to them. This way, we can verify the parentage of the lambs on the registration papers for traceability. Finally, today, the last flock sire on our working sheep farm has been selected and introduced to his group of ewes. Now, all our ewes are with rams and breeding. This second batch of sheep is more in season, so the rams are already noticeably active with the ewes. Things look more quiet in the initial breeding groups, which we hope is a sign that a lot of the ewes are already bred. Because of the sheep being put into breeding groups, the sheep barns were reconfigured to house breeding groups in two barns, rams in another, and open ewes in yet another barn. This change in housing has left a few sheep still a little stressed out with the changes, but they did seem a little more relaxed than yesterday.

The sheep definitely make friendships. I agree with selling multiples unless impossible. I have two girls who came from the same farm at a year old who are now 4 and still are best friends and almost always by each other. I also like to keep an old gal in with my younger ewes--it's good for both. Thanks for another great video!

Greetings from The Czech Republic. Another very interesting video, I'm looking forward to seeing those beautiful lambs in winter. Anry mentioned yesterday that his knee hurts, I pulled a tendon in my knee in August, and I'm struggling with that, too. It helps lubricate my knee with eucalyptus ointment, sometimes a curd wrap overnight, and when she goes to feed I'd recommend pulling her knee back so she doesn't exert herself too much, the tightening helps and relieves me. As your knee hurts, it's not much fun, but you know lovely Lynn, she wants to deal with it before it gets any worse, then bad movement and it can get worse. Years ago, my cartilage popped out loud, I heard it when I got on the train, and I almost fell out the door in pain, and I had to have surgery in two months, and those two months of walking with that torn cartilage weren't much fun, and it was still winter on the ice when every step is different, so now that it's just stretched I'm trying as hard as I can to get it settled and improved before winter.
