I really want to see a comparison between the Azurys and Hadenys with the 109 Pros. Especially the bass comparison between them would be interesting to see
Thanks for all that you do Josh! I've been inching my way into this hobby for years now thanks to you and I'll never go back to normal headphones or gaming headsets. Can't thank you enough man!
the production quality is (as always) top notch. you deserve more subscribers fr fr. on a sidenote I should be getting my arya stealth's in a few days and I can't justify another purchase like this one... which is kinda unfortunate, since I was looking for a good closedback... edit: Courtney listening to NF is such a vibe! Hey guys I have a question, do any of you feel "unbalanced" when a headphone only has a cable leaving one side? It makes me feel like something is wrong, it doesn't affect the sound (on most headphones at least) but it does bother me for some dumb reason. Looking for my people with stupid brains.
You know, I wish more reviewers would talk about replacement ear pads. Getting replacement pads for Focals are difficult especially if you're trying to target the same frequency as OEM pads.
Thanks for the review Josh! For the openback version, could you also assess the gaming performance (and maybe briefly compare it to Maxwell in that regard)?
Thank you for the review! Younger people can hear higher frequencies that older people cannot. The younger have a tendency to prefer the the Dan Clark D3 to the Meze Liric II. Maybe that's why Courtney prefers Azurys to Meze Liric II.
Hey Josh! Thanks for yet another great input, I’m currently still on HD 660s, but I’m looking to upgrade to something more dynamic in the near future, and thinking of going closed back as a daily work horse, would you mind to share your thoughts on will Azjrys be fine for me or should I save up for Hadenys and go open back yet again? I like HD 660s midrange but they are a bit too warm and dark for me, and not very dynamic as well.
hey joshua, have been subbed for a while...and as usual youtubes algorhythm has kept you away for a while....great vid,i may try these out...would love to see you make a video anually regarding which headphones for which type of music...i.e. what to choose in your opinion for drum & bass, house, pop, etc would be good to get your opinion on which headphones suit which music
Thank you Joshua. I own a set of Bose QC headsets, now interested in moving up somewhat and interested in a more immersive music listening experience. I am a fan of classical and also folk/bluegrass music. I notice that the Focal Celestee and Elegia models are somewhat reduced in price. I initially also considered the Bathys model. Would either of these options be suitable for my ambitions? Anyone else's input is also appreciated. Will I hear a considerable difference?
I'm just thinking out loud here, but isn't how wide a headphone sounds or doesn't sound is that to do more with psychoacoustics and tuning, as I've heard some closed back headphones sound very open and wide/expansive and some open headphones sound closed in and in your head.
imo the design is the biggest influence, you could give it a "airy" tuning but it won't feel like an open back, pads and venting could help that feel closer though. I personally have a lot of issues with closed backs/in ears usually but got the the DCA E3 recently and it sounds and feels like an open back I love it.
@@chrisk3127 Yes definitely depends on the design of the headphones, Focal's closed back headphones like the Elegia, Celestee, Stellia have some sort of small venting port to let air through which in term gives them a more airy open sound, most budget headphones that I've tried don't have the best acoustics and give you that closed in your head sound, recently I've purchased some mid-tier and higher end closed back headphones which are better designed to sound more like an open back.
Word of the day: Unbridled. But seriously, Courtney really does give cool perspectives eh? That is pretty enjoyable to watch the honesty, and actually you should be charging meze and focal for marketing research. She is like a focus test.
I've had the B&W p7 wireless since launch. I still love them but I'm now wanting an upgrade. I mostly listen to strong vocal/acoustic guitar centric music. I wonder how these compare
It's a 40mm driver, focal never seem to mention the max power of their drivers, I think they'll be too weak / too easy to distort like the weak drivers in beyerdynamic and sennheiser headphones. I've yet to find something as fun as my M50X's despite having well over 10 headphones in my collection including Hifiman Arya. Anyhow great review, thanks.
Audio technica make a lot of headphones with similar sized drivers but carbon coated so they can do more resolution and transients than the m50x. Also they don’t look f ugly like the m50x. If you want an upgrade you should get the wp900. I personally have the es10 but they need a good eq to sound fun but once you have the dap for that, they are absolutely amazing
I have tested both the Azurys and the Bathys. The extra 200 bucks are purely for ANC and bluetooth. The Azurys have much better bass, but otherwise the sound is very much the same. Bathys do have a popping issue when introduced to heavy bass... Personally i ended up betting a pair of Hifiman.
@@vikrambhaskar7976 They are better than the Bathys with a better soundstage, treble and bass. I did however buy a couple of used Focal Radiance which are slightly better, but twice as expensive if you were to buy them new. I would argue that the Nanos are the best headphones I have heard under 900 bucks.
How do they compare to the Celestee? I’m looking for a good closed back headphone with good sound stage and bass. Something that would be great for movies or single player games while still being good for music. My current daily driver is the Audeze lcd-x. I love them but I want to find a good closed back headphone to go along with them.
I really like my celestee, I brought it used for 500 bucks on ebay as a closed back companion to the mg clears. It is a very enjoyable headphone that works with a wide range of music genres. It is a beast for rock and metal.
For mixing I won't recommend closed back headphones, as they generally have a less natural sound reproduction and less ideal for critical listening (from experience and research), you can look up why open backs or studio monitors are better for this. However if you need the versatility of sound isolation, you may wanna look at the headfi tests they did and look at the frequency response. From glancing, I saw that it kinda follows a harman curve, which is good for some people while others consider it as being not flat. However that topic is kinda a rabbit hole so definitely go read into it! It can be argued the harman curve is the closest to what you'd hear from a studio monitor if I remember correctly but please double check 😁 from the graphs it might be too much bass imo but haven't look at it more in depth. Ofc professional open back mixing headphones and some consumer open backs would be the first choice to mix and master. For monitoring I think these would do fine
I prefer the dt770 80ohm much more than the pro x le version. The latter one is too much V shaped, less soundstage and isn't as natural. Now the Azurys I just got, and they're quite different tuning, they remind me of my K371 (Harman target) but with higher sound quality, a true upgrade in that area. Honestly I still prefer the soundstage of the pro 80ohm but I'm still warming up to the Azurys as I just got them today. I might change mind about them after "head burn-in"
I was able to listen to these and make my test, the bass could be compared with the HD 8 DJ, precise, impactful, not as tight tho, the HD 8 outperforms in bass this ones, however I was pleased with the overall sound, mostly I bought these to listen to electronic music, nothing else
What is the cord connection like. I assume a 3.5. Would you recommend a balanced 4.4 and which one. I currently use a focal Elegia with a balanced 4.4 and Dekoni custom pads, I hope these new focal would be a nice upgrade. What would you think?

Once DMS’s Project Omega headphone starts shipping, I’d love to see how the Focal Azurys compares to it.
I believe a more fitting comparison would be to Focal Hadenys, because both it and DMS Project Omega are open-backs.

The closed back Focals never had the bass popping problem, but the Open Backs sure do. All of my OB Focals do it. The question is, do the Hadenys pop?
This being more preferable over liric and e3 is so crazy. Insane value, this knocks out any plans to pick up the 620s or any dan clark closed backs
