    Hi I have a question,is it possible to make a free flight plane fly using ground effect?and can you make one?
    Anyways your videos is nice and you look like murr from practical jokers plus wilbur wright👍

    3.25- class A, 3.5- class B. Bring 3-4 planes and at least 2 of each engine and compete in 2 classes.

    It had to stick in the tallest tree, right?
    I know I always say it, but I 'm going to say it again, anyway - R/C rudder! Maybe also an R/C de-themalizer trigger. Why take a chance of losing that beautiful airplane? Just because miniature, lightweight R/C technology was not yet available to those who used to fly FF models like this is no sensible reason not to use it today. I'd bet that at least some of the old-time FF modelers would have used it if they had it back then.
    You wouldn't have to touch the TX if all is going well. It's just a way to keep the model over the field, away from the highway, and out of the damn' trees.
    I have often thought of taking a classic FF model such as this and converting it to electric power and full R/C for duration, thermal flying. I bet it would be a killer-good R/C sailplane.

      I clearly remember, my first dethermalizer on the tail end of a gas job. It was a cigarette meant to burn a rubber band. The last close-up view of that airplane was the cigarette falling apart as I launched it. It’s simply flew out of sight

      Unfortunately you can't do both on the same plane. Servos don't center well enough for reliable trim, so you have to either fly it pure or be on the sticks all the way up. The rush of letting it scream all the way up on its own is something that can't be fully captured on video and remains the reason I keep them freeflight. If I want to do RC, I've got hotliners that do 0-200 in a couple seconds and thermal as well as a Gentle Lady. There's a lot of fun to that, but you don't get the "mind of its own" thermal hunting bloodhound behavior. I should add, my property is like a cage for a lion. We do fly on much bigger sites but I usually don't have time to video much in that environment.

      @@joshuawfinn I see your point. Well, that's why our hobby is so varied and we can enjoy every aspect of it.
      I know what you mean about "the scorching up". I have a very light, scratch-built, two-meter R/C Lanzo Bomber powered by an old, geared, FAI .05 Astro Flight motor turning a 12x 5" folding prop. I used to power it with eight Ni-Cads. Now I use ta 3S Lipo. It goes into a near vertical climb from a six-inch ground roll, and then floats like a kite until I have to go home for dinner.
      For duration flying nothing touches it.

    Are you not tempted to at least install rudder/elevator RC - even if you trim it for FF - just so it doesn't hit trees and you can bring it back close to you?

    Joshua, I am building the Satellite 1000 and I am confused about what a "snuffer tube" is for and how it is installed. do you know, or have a video about this?

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Місяць тому

      Snuffer tube is for your dethermalizer fuse. I highly recommend either getting a Seelig timer to run both engine cut and dethermalizer, or better yet, use a BMK system to run your dethermalizer off a servo. You have two options with that: 1 is to use a traditional mechanical engine cut timer and just have the servo for dethermalizer, 2 is to get a Mennano electronic timer which runs both engine cut and dethermalizer, with radio abort. Great for saving your plane when you screwed up and didn't get the stab seated all the way because Satellite stabs have to be keyed to align the rudder, and the keys can hang up on the stab platform. Also be aware that the hold down force on the stab needs to be about 5 times more than you think it needs to be.

    Great video, I also flew motorized gliders but with engines that I don't know if you will know because of your age. In my time they were Diesel motors, fuel consisted of castor oil, ether, and nitromethane. The compression ratio was adjusted with a screw where now goes the spark plug reducing the chamber dimensions. It was really hard to get the transition to steady flight once the timer throttled the fuel line.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Рік тому

      Actually I've got some experience with diesels. Haven't ever heard of using nitro in them...most folks these days are running kerosene and ether with some castor to keep things lubricated. Problem is getting ether is extremely difficult. Anyway, I've got some Mill .75s and EDs, along with a smattering of others. The EDs run great. The one Mills I've used was a lemon although I've helped out with others and they were quite nice. Anyway, among those who can find fuel, Elfin and ED diesels are quite popular for small SAM airplanes for the simplicity of operation.

    •  Рік тому

      @@joshuawfinn Hi!!!!!!
      I had never heard of kerosene engines. Interesting, regarding ether, it's logical that it's hard to get it because it's really dangerous. I started out doing free flight and control line planes in a club run by a lovely retired gentleman who had been an aviation mechanic. In my time there was an official exam to become an instructor and when I passed it he let me prepare the fuel even though I was 17 years old. One day, playing with the plastic container, already empty, I had the foolish idea of smelling it and I squeezed the container and inhaled the vapors, I fell from the chair in which I was sitting. Here is a second hand one, of Spanish manufacture that someone still sells. It's a pity that nowadays young people buy RTF's, apart from having fun I learned a lot of things that even served me later for my engineering studies. I loved watching your video, now I'm 57 years old and it reminded me of my mother's anger when I came home smelling horrible, full of grease and with cuts on my fingers. www.milanuncios.com/aeromodelismo/motor-zom-mkiii-2-45-cc-modelhob.htm

    The Satellite Free Flight power duration power model design is indeed a classic. The model clearly was in good air for most of its flights. Engine shut down appears too slow for an engine on bladder pressure. I think in the USA the run down is not considered part of the engine run, which it is in England and Australia. The Satellite design seems to work best in the bigger sizes, the 1/2A version with Cox TD 049 was outclassed by other designs.
    You could add variable incidence tail (stabiliser in the USA) and auto rudder to go higher for a given engine run if the rules permit, but there is nothing quite like the non VIT and AR model for simplicity and enjoyment!

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Рік тому

      For what it's worth there's a flood off port on the engine that I could use for instant stop. As you mentioned, rundown isn't part of the motor run here, so I choose to avoid wasting fuel and then having to drain it from the case and cylinder before the next flight, something that annoys me to no end with my Cox Conquest. I suspect higher nitro fuel would get the rpms up to the point that a cleaner shut down would also be possible. After all these K&Bs are capable of at least 26-27k, possibly more. Anyway, lots of options. I don't have any footage of the final trim setup where I added a smidge more left rudder, but the climb is so vertical that it would be hard to get much more height with a VIT setup.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn  Рік тому

      Oh one other thing: as you mentioned the Satellite 226 glides like a brick. For a TD 049 setup it's hard to beat a Mini Pearl or Maverick. If you step up to a hotter .049 like the VA Mk.II or Fora, the Satellite 320 becomes an option, and those glide VERY well. Of course a Pilfered Pearl 310 is potentially even better.

      This bird is pretty old and somewhere early in its life, the left side of the center panel picked up substantial washin. Dick glued trailing edge stock on both the top of the left wing TE and bottom of the right wing TE. Not an elegant solution but as you can see, it flies just fine like that. I'm amazed how well this plane glides.
