CMJ painted the colours with his rich voice on the radio of the masterpieces of cricket we all love, he waxed lyrical with eloquent clarity as he described leather on willow with great artistry and finesse, Johnners on the other hand was like the naughty schoolboy of the box, with his little pranks and windups, and all done with good spirits with a mischievous glint in his eye. But he was also a wonderful informative commentator and a lovely warm and friendly man , wh embraced fun and his love for life and cricket was infectious. Both CMJ and Johnners were giant's of broadcasting, but did it with a warmth that was so endearing, and both are irreplaceable....... Summer as lost some of its warmth with out them. May they rest in Peace.
Absolutely loved Johnners. At an Old Trafford test match many, many moons ago, I persuaded the security guard to ask him to come down from the commentary box so that I could meet him during a break in proceedings. To my amazement, Johnners obliged. We had a lovely chat and he signed my autograph book. I still have the photograph which my friend's brother took of the happy occasion. Johnners was a true gentleman and a wonderful commentator. RIP - you were the best.
Another truly great man who entertained generations of cricket fans on TMS .. It is interesting that he won the MC - he must have also been truly courageous. Above all his wonderful sense of humour is what those of us who had the privilege of listening to him will remember.
He was a (Grenadier) Technical Adjutant in the Guards Armoured Division. His commendation alludes to (amongst other things) him recovering knocked out tanks often under fire. Without doubt a very fine gentleman.
growing up listening to Johnners, Blowers and CMJ in the 1970's and 80's on TMS - great memories. Only Blowers left now of the great radio and TV commentators from that era. Thank goodness the new generation are also very good at their jobs and I am sure Johnners would have approved greatly of their skills.
Very rare these days to have a journalist radio cricket commentator we will never hear the likes of CMJ Alan Mcgilvray Tony Cozier Henry Blofeld and of course Johnners ever again really sad. Thank God we have Aggers he is magnificent.
In my opinion, (and only my opinion) there have always been two types of people interested in cricket. Those who were deadly serious about the game, its technique and the desire for their team to win at all costs, and the those like Johnners - who could appreciate it as a place of fair play, skill and above all fun. I'm 56 and therefore perhaps old fashioned, but I'm firmly in Brian's camp on that one.
Wonderful personality. I like Sky’s comm box today with Nasser Husain and Michael Atherton but nothing goes better than Richie Benaud, Jim Laker, Bill Lawry, Tony Greig and of course Brian Johnston but I never saw him commentate because I’m far younger and after his time
Johnners - another of cricket's great personalities, along with Dickie Bird and Fred Trueman. I read his biography and listened to him commentating on the radio. By Jove, he brought his subjects to life with witty observations. He died when I would have been twenty four!
