    Thank you for this fantastic hands on review. I've been looking for a smaller mirrorless and settled on the X100F. I'm very much looking forward to not lugging around my heavy DSLR for everything. I've watched a ton of reviews and yours is one of the best and most comprehensive. It is greatly appreciated!

    Awesome video and info, thanks for sharing. Do you think the original lens that they kept on this model can resolve the extra sensor detail?

      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      I do, but this is not my field of expertise. You'll get more detailed information at dpreview or dxomark for these kinds of questions.

    It's great to see you talking about this new camera and I am sure many of us would like to get our hands on one. How is it possible you "only" have 20.000 subscribers?! Your reviews are presented wonderful, classy and optimistic. I like that a lot in a reviewer so please keep making them. And your name, you have to be Dutch right? ;)

      I would like to ask you one more thing, if it's not too much. I photograph with X-T1, X-Pro2 and X100T (with the WCL-X100 and TCL-X100) and surely I will get the X100F because of its sensor. Honestly, Photographing with my X100T is way more pleasant than with the other X cameras I have. Somehow I fell much more inspired and the images are much more satisfying... at least to me. I fell that the excess of lenses and choices get on the way and make me spend unnecessary time thinking of gear. Here comes my question: What is the actual difference between the WCL-X100 and TCL-X100 and WCL-X100 and TCL-X100 II?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      I agree that there's something about the X series that does invite, encourage and inspire me to take photographs and to be more adventurous about taking photographs. I do not have enough understanding or experience to answer your question about the wide and tele conversion lenses, sorry.

    Hi Maarten, thank you for your video and taking the time to do it. I find it concise, informative and to the point.
    Would you mind answering a few questions?
    You write about the improved focus but could you elaborate a bit more? Is it faster than the X100T? If so, how much faster? As fast as the X-Pro2 with the 23mm/f2?
    Is it more precise than the X100T or the X100S? Is it better in low light or backlight?
    I ask all these questions because I used to own a X100S and it was one of the cameras I've enjoyed using the most, except for the autofocus which to me seemed quite rudimentary, slow and sometimes inaccurate enough to not be able to use the optical viewfinder because I couldn't trust the focusing. I also hated that it used to almost always rack back and forth before achieving focus in lower light and it wouldn't hold focus with a half press on the shutter button. Have these issues been fixed?
    Thanks again

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words, they're always appreciated. Those are issues that I would plan to address in a review, and are actually a little beyond the scope of my work, as I don't have a standardized test bench, older models to compare to, nor the tools required to make the precise measurements you request. For those kinds of details, I recommend either CNet or dpreview.
      So, in the few days I shot with the X-100F, it is considerably faster and more reliable (focus was one of my issues with the X-100T) - the issues you raise in the last paragraph have been addressed - although I thought I'd read that a firmware upgrade had also made some improvements.
      I'll do my best to address these in the full review - but at the moment am waiting for a production model to review.

    • @chakas
      @chakas 8 років тому +1

      Maarten Heilbron Thank you for your answer, that's all that I needed to know. I'll wait for your more thorough review and I'll be sure to check dpreview too (though they sometimes take ages to review stuff)
      Thanks again and please keep posting reviews!

    Excellent review. You just helped me decide my next purchase... 16mm f1.4 instead of the X100F. Still not enough changes over the X100T to justify the expense of upgrading.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks for commenting. I would disagree - I believe the new focus engine is worth the upgrade, however, if you're not unhappy with the X100T, then no need to upgrade.

    Maarten, thanks for the thorough reviews both on this x100f and on the x-pro2.
    If you had to pick one of the two, considering price and type of use, what would it be? It seems to me that they are very similar in a lot of ways but yet different.
    Thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      They are too different for a direct comparison - X-100F is a small fixed lens pocket camera for street shooting or travel. The X-Pro2 (although I'd steer you to the X-T2) is an interchangeable lens camera with a pro approach to functions and controls.

    Excellent review Maarten..My biggest problem with previous X100 models has always been the poor /slow autofocus..
    I'm keen to know exactly how "improved" the new auto focus really is... eg 3 x faster than ........X100T? . Or better than /worse than other cameras eg My OMD EM1.
    Any specs on this?
    Thanks Dave

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      I'm not sure I can quantify it as I don't really have the tools or test bench required to do that (may CNet or dpreview) but as it seems (on the sample with pre-release firmware) it seemed very similar to the X-Pro2 and X-T2, which are a substantial improvement in speed and accuracy over the X-100T. Where Fuji's focus was clearly near the back of the pack before, it's caught up now, and the joystick to move the focus point is (in the absence of a touch screen) very useful and usable.

  • @alterego4486
    @alterego4486 8 років тому +1

    Maarten, as always, an excellent, comprehensive review.
    Something you mentioned when reviewing the X-Pro2 was that the viewfinder eye-point height was not great for spectacle wearers. I see in the cameras' respective specifications that the X-Pro2 eye-point height setting is about the same as the X100F's (15mm). I notice that you removed your specs during this video; was this significant? I ask because I, too, am a spectacle wearer, and I found the X-Pro2 viewfinder did not let me view all the information round the viewfinder screen without moving the camera around, and I found this to be annoying. If the X100F is the same, I would not consider it, although, peculiarly, the X100T viewfinder is slightly better than that on the X-Pro2, so maybe the X100F will be OK. Anyway, I'd be grateful for any feedback you can give on this point.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, and your kind words. There's no implied message here - when I'm shooting primarily with the viewfinder, I prefer to take my glasses off - it just feels better.
      You are correct though, at that close distance, depending on your prescription, there will be some part of the field of view that's out of range. I didn't have the X-Pro2 and the X100F side by side to compare, but they were very similar. Pretty sure that happens with all cameras, but may be more of a problem with digital displays which tend to put their information panels around the edges.

    Hey I have bought a x-pro 2 with a 35mm f.2. But I find it too clumsy
    and heavy for street shooting. Also the 50mm equivalent doesn`t fit my
    style of photography. So I thought about getting the x100f. Do you think
    I should sell my X-Pro 2 system, even if I won`t make any profit after
    selling my x-pro 2 to buy a x100f?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      If your only use for the X-Pro2 is street shooting, it would probably be wise to trade it in. Otherwise it is a very nice camera, and I'd certainly hang onto it.

    So will this camera like the old camera last a lifetime? Why Sony didn't make any rangefinder camera like x100 series or leica? Will Sony RX100 good for street photography?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 років тому

      Both are good questions, but no way to predict the longevity, nor to understand Sony's philosophy - sometimes it's based on sales projections, sometimes on oneexecutive's desire for a product. My sense is that Sony no longer gives individual product managers and teams the freedom that was provided in the past.

    Does the manual focusing ring have a hard stops in both ends like 23mm 1.4. If the camera has turned off and back on, does it keep manual focus distant?

If you mean would I purchase the silver or black X-100F, I'd go with silver. Such a clear design statement.

    I used to have an X100T, but sold it because its focus was too slow for me at times. That's my big concern about the X100F, namely how fast it focuses and how much faster than the X100T. I did love the small, coat-pocketable X100T as a travel camera, but I just wanted something with speedier focus. Very nice overview of this camera and perhaps you can also tell I'm quite interested in it.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому

      I agree with your focus concerns, which I've had until recently about many Fuji cameras. However, the last introductions (X-Pro2, X-T2 and the X-100T) are a substantial improvement. I'm not sure what's happened in the meantime with firmware upgrades on older models - but for me, and I'm also quite interested, would be my reason for choosing the X-100T. Best wishes, your viewership, and participation in comments, is appreciated.

    Hasn't Fuji run the X100 series into the ditch? I have an original X100 and after many firmware upgrades, it's not a bad camera. I then went with the X100S. X100T did nothing for me, and now the F? I got the X70 at Christmas and, honestly, don't like it because I'm a viewfinder guy, but it's starting to grow on me. To each their own, but the X100S is my camera. You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. Oh, sorry for the edit. Nice review. Appreciate it.

    Seems like an X100T with a thumbstick and slightly more megapixels. Not that I'm upset, my X100T has proven to be a wonderful travel and street camera, much easier to lug around than a Nikon D4s, for sure, but it is disappointing that in the years it's taken Fuji to come up with its replacement that haven't really done much replacing. No 4K video. No touch screen. No tilt-screen. I'm doubting image stabilization. Really, no incentive to spend the money on an upgrade.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +4

      The major incentive I'd see is the focus engine, which seems to be substantially improved - however, it's been sometime since I shot with the X-100T, and maybe the firmware updates have brought it close to this level. But I do agree, the X100T remains, a great camera.

    It's incredible, that you are making your reviews free for Fuji, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, whomever. You are too good to make it free :-) The reviews at DPReview are mostly full of errors and incompetence. Gordon Laing is terribly arrogant, and is not willing to admit his errors and oversights. You are really great ad ready to discuss any details; you are the only experienced reviewer who is really interactive. BTW, you mentioned that you are reviewing LX10.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I'm pleased and humbled by your kind words, thanks for commenting. However, I don't see it that way - I get a great deal of pleasure "playing" with the latest camera technology as well as writing/shooting and editing video. Those are the real perks and payment for me.
      The ability of interacting with viewers - and I do read all comments and reply to those that are relevant and civil - is one of the pleasures of UA-cam. It's how I learn, it's how I improve - and it's how I understand how my videos are appreciated.
      BTW - I am, that should be next week's post - however I will admit to being horribly unpredictable. The number of half-finished projects in OneNote and in FinalCut is embarrassing even to me.

    These look amazing but I can't justify 1300$ on a fixed lens camera. I am considering switching from my Nikon D750/Sony A6000 to the Fuji X-T2 or Xpro-2. I am just finding it difficult to give up the full frame sensor, not to mention the large investment in Nikon glass. The Sony I have no issues parting with. It is a great camera but I don't enjoy shooting with it.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +2

      Understood. I'm very happy with the X-T2. I would like a full frame sensor, but am not sure I need a full frame sensor, but the glass investment, I get that - and the D750 is a very nice camera.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +2

      Not so obvious to me, particularly on the original files. It may not be fair to judge from a video with a less than 2K resolution. In my mind what needed updating was the focus engine, and I was very pleased with the improvement. On the other hand, the X-100T remains a very good camera - a nice combination of style, functionality and usability.

      The weak spot of it is it being soft when shot wide open on a close range. The lens will turn very sharp once stopped down to f4 or more.

    You always say positive attributes about a camera tend to gross over the negatives(like this video on touch screen and tilted screen) or barely mention them(*). No wonder most camera manufacturers let you review their cameras.
    If you want to be a serious reviewer you need to be thorough i.e. mention both the positives and negatives in equal proportions.
    (*) 4K overheating in Sony A6300 which is very serious.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  8 років тому +3

      Ouch. Im sorry. And I'm not sure if you've asked for this but.
      When the camera manufacturer provides a sample for pre-announcement use, it comes with some conditions (I've added this note to the description). In addition to a non-disclosure agreement, we're generally asked not to do performance testing and not to post photographs (although I was permitted to include them in the video, they're not (as I would usually do) posted on flickr when the EXIF data can be seen. That's an oversight, I won't do that again. And this was a preview, not a review - let me think about the value of continuing to do previews.
      I believe that every camera has virtues, and if I can't find enough, I return the camera unreviewed. That said, every camera has flaws, minor and major and I certainly don't hesitate to mention them. And I've certainly been hard enough on Fuji both about video functionality (which until the X-T2 has been a afterthought) and focus (which was remedied with the X-Pro2).
      I have several videos about the A6300, (which I purchased prior to review, so it wasn't on loan) and with the exception of the A600/A6300 comparison, they all mention and demonstrate the overheating issue. I'm sorry if I've not been aggressive enough, but I have reported on my extensive experiences with the A6300 - with two exceptions (shooting on a beach in Mexico and shooting an interview in a small room with standard fresnel incandescent film lights) , I've been able to shoot everything I wanted to without incident.
      I do my best, I don't mind being called on an issue, and post clarifications and errors when they occur.
      And I answer all questions and comments.
      Thanks for raising this issue, and for providing the opportunity to clarify.
