I think the camera angle, quality and framerate also play a role. To me 60FPS captured always looks smoother but "slower" than 24 or 30FPS where each frame it just jumps. Also seeing the pitch slightly more from the side (especially if camera is on the glove side) will show more "travel distance" in the same period of time, thus giving the illusion of being faster (same applies for the more zoomed-in video).
This is really great stuff, when I played from 1997-2006 we new this stuff existed but science always swore that no ball rises! I always felt some fastballs rose up based on arm angle! In the 70s and 80s we used the term the pitcher hides the ball well! I always felt that pitchers with lower arm slots where tougher to hit! However, when you deviate away from a 3/4 arm slot injury is more prevalent IMHO.

You guys also missed probably the 2 most important factors for a pitcher! I played with guys that thru 86-87 and it looked like 98mph. **** Biggest reason was they hid the ball well with there delivery, meaning there the gutter did not get a good look at the pitch! Next is the Decatur or slow gun effect! Taller or long limbed guys with longer strides release the ball 6-18 inches closer to the plate! It does not sound like much, but when your talking .45 seconds to .42 it’s a big difference… Guys like Randy Johnson and Chapman really have an edge with long stripes and adding length to to release point!
I just love how people think they can gauge speed over 30-60 fps video using their caveman eyes better than sophisticated pitch tracking technology

6:50 I'm going to say 98mph 7:50 it's 93mph 8:50 I'm going to say 94mph I'm doing pretty good so far So I consistently highball the mph a bit but about right. The thing is I have elite dynamic vision, absolute outlier results from multiple tests so I'm not surprised in the slightest since I've also gone pitch for pitch with a guy using a pocket radar and been within 2mph at worst. The thing I don't get is why people don't trust the gun, if I get 96 and the gun says 95 I'm going with the radar every time. Trust the tech.
Totally Disagree! I topped out at 91-92 from the left side and played many Professional Seasons, I spent a lot of time around baseball! If I can sit behind a pitcher indoor or outdoors with a good view and see 6-12 fastballs with a decent catcher I can easily gauge if i could match that or not. I am not saying I can tell down to exact MPH, but I can tell pretty easy if that’s harder than myself! Remember scouts signed pitchers for almost 80 years with no radar guns! We had pitchers like Feller, Drysdale, Ryan, Seaver & Jr Richards all signed by scouts well before Decatur or Jugs ever existed! They new what real heat looked like even back then! Ps: My first Minor League manager caught both Ryan and Dalkowski! He said Steven was 5-8mph faster than Nolan Ryan at his best!
*** Valid point, yes on video it can be difficult to tell how hard guys are throwing. I have done thousands of lessons. I can say pitching indoors in an enclosed area along with video can be very hard to judge.
I don't know bro. I was in high-school and was recruited by a big d1 school and another hs pitcher on my team throwing 90 to 92. We begged the coach to recruit a pitcher from our rival school but nobody had interest in him because he was around 83 to 84 mph but he was absolutely dynamic. His 83 seemed faster than my teammates 90. That kid walked onto a d2 school and put up crazy record breaking numbers. We all got drafted and he was the only one to make it to the show. I was drafted by the same team and by that time he was 87 to 90 but it just seemed so much faster and I can't explain it. Some people definitely have fastballs that appear faster than they truly are.

You just took 13 minutes and 56 seconds to say, “people just don’t know what they are talking about.”
"Eyedar" is a goated baseball expression lol
This was a great video dude. Very informative.
Key board warrior he says, i was prepared to giver the ole well done, but........ kick rocks
I’m normally 4-6 miles under which I think is decent for an eyedar
Where are you able to find information like VAA for MLB players? Or is it something you collect yourself?

they literally talked about that
I have a radar gun. Nobody in our amateur league wants to know that they throw nowhere near as hard as they think they do.

The point of this video was mainly to address why pitches can appear slower on video. Not while sitting directly behind the mound.
