Can bees help us to design sustainable supermarkets? | Emma Campbell | TEDxQueensUniversityBelfast

- Today, supermarkets are a key interface between shoppers and the food they eat. In fact, just nine retailers’ control over 95% of the UK’s grocery market. Supermarkets provide consumers with a cornucopia of choice, where foods sourced from all around the world are available every day for low prices. Unfortunately, sourcing from a global hinterland has resulted in chronic consumer disconnection, mass overconsumption as well as waste of our precious planetary resources. Dr Emma Campbell is a Research Fellow and Design Tutor in Architecture, based within the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research focuses on future relationships between people, food, and place through the lens of sustainability. As a design-researcher, she is really interested in how design and systems-thinking might help to solve some of the wicked problems inherent in food systems today.
Currently, Emma works within the Innovate UK funded Ideal Home project in partnership with Moy Park, the UK’s largest poultry integrator. The project applies a research-by-design methodology to evaluate, model and redesign poultry house infrastructures with an aim to increase productivity, improve animal welfare and help the poultry sector meet net zero emissions by 2040. During her Ph.D., Emma presented her work at conferences and workshops locally and internationally, in places such as Doha, Vancouver, Nottingham, Nicosia and Belfast. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
This is already how a lot of local farm-coop's work. It's not new - as she says, it's going back to how things were in many ways, but we can add technology to it as well. Milk used to be delivered and the bottles picked up. And farm coops deliver vegetables and eggs without packaging if you sign up. It's just a matter of making this the standard, rather than the exception. Since it's more costly at a personal level (but less costly to the world & the future), either gov needs to step in or we just need to promote it until the cost falls to the level where everyone can afford it.
I know the Supermarket was a revolutionary concept when they began, but now they are the masters of our consumption, hiding food miles, resisting recyclable packaging, determining the type, shape, quality and Prices of most of the food we consume. They are not on the side of progress and I for one avoid them whenever I can.

Coffee growers.
Wine vineyard

@@chantillucas-meek7347 yes it can be done, but it would be way more expensive, since maintaining a climate in a greenhouse always costs money and energy. also, small scale farming can never beat the efficiency of large scale, outdoor farming, since you cannot specialize to cut corners. in the end, any local solution would either have not much variety, or be too expensive for the population to use. without some form of global emission tax, there will be no incentive to innovate.
It's time for the Bees to form a Union!!!

Now you have at least one person who constantly believes in you, which means you are fated to realize your dreams! No doubts here ^)

I keep thinking about such stuff as well, you know, that waste reduction thing... And have ideas too, if only i wasn't a lazy otaku, i would definitely expend my braincells to further research my ideas and make em useful
Hey when you're a lazy otaku and have a yard, chances are you should look into phytoremediation. It's fun, makes your life look like a ghibli movie.
I don't like them because I got bullied by this one bee when I was a kid... :( True story...
that was a person dressed as a bee
This video is the bee’s knees!
Good idea

nice share😍
🔴Really that is so useful content.... Thank you TEDx for sharing these valuable content.✅ And special thanks to Dr Emma for the presentation. 👏
I hear the argument and it makes some sense but what about the areas of Earth that don't have good land to locally grow crops on?
Did you realize that in the dry, rocky lands of Pakistan there are farmers? You can grow SOMETHING almost anywhere. Also, you can set up "grow houses" ( greenhouses utilizing water conservation or hydroponics or waste reclamation) in areas where there are issues. Where there's a will, there can with effort be found a way.
@@chantillucas-meek7347 it is true that we can grow some types of crop anywhere with greenhouses, as long as we have enough money to build and maintain them providing heat and/or cold all year long. We've gotten too used to being able to get any fruit or vegetable year-round, no matter what environment we live in. Like usual, it all comes down to money. If importing fruits and veggies is cheaper than building greenhouses and growing it ourselves, in whatever climate, then we'll keep importing it.
Some of the most desolate looking areas still have very fertile soils. Even the desert can be transformed to produce amazing plants. Water is more the issue, I think. I like the idea of locally sourced food. Fewer choices, for sure, but quality. And if we wanted something else we could visit other town's beehives.
@@yellowbird5411 I agree. I'm all for locally sourced everything. We would have to get used to not having everything we want at any time of the year. It can be done but there has to be sufficient motivation to make that change. Not just for environmentally friendly people but everyone else too.

Supermarket's? I'd say a new entire World as Family......
There is no scarcity of resources. There is over population of humans on the planet.
When you strive to reduce waste to zero so that everyone has sufficient what do you think the consequence is? The consequence is that the human population of the globe increases. And your perceived scarcity reappears. Reduce the Earth's population and scarcity will disappear.
Agenda 2030? Well, I believe it's likely that particular plan has already been initiated sir. So, we shall see.

Or you could consider not taking the honey from the bees in the first place.
Honey is bee food made to feed the larvae in the hive.
That would be least wasteful.

I HAVE A SOLUTION!!! Stop living on top of each other. Acres make the cycle possible.
More importantly we can learn from bees and other animals not to exploit species that look different from us just because we can.
We cause billions of individuals suffering and death through choice and they don't benefit one but because they are local.
Time to ditch animal agriculture, time to learn from the non humans.
