    Eric is absolutely dead on with the tale of Christopher Cross playing with Deep Purple, for a wee bit, many moons ago. Good show, you two groovy cats. I was waiting for ”Sweet Freedom” and then it came in, quite high, towards the end. Nice.
    Another excellent show with a lot of cool tangents. Just 🎵”the way, uh-uh, uh-huh, l like it, uh-huh, uh-huh!”🎵 You know it, fellas.
    Cheers from The Big, Bad, Bog of an Apple, y’all.
    Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo up and down!

    Has to be the Doobies/Steely Dan work for sure (personally not big on Toto/Christopher Cross/Kenny Loggins), plus Van Halen's "I'll Wait" (McD co-wrote it). Other highlights: Dukes Of September (the Fagen/McDonald/Boz Scaggs supergroup) & New York Rock And Soul Revue (again a Fagen/Scaggs collab). Check out the 'best of' Michael McDonald - The Ultimate Collection (and also The Voice Of Michael McDonald) that covers a LOT of bases solo-wise (with some Doobies thrown in). ..Don't know if it got a mention-haven't finished the vid yet- but always liked the song "Sweet Freedom" from '86 & used on the soundtrack to Running Scared (great flick).
    I'm a BIG Doobies fan I can definitely understand the bad feelings towards McDonald for the changes he brought to the band's sound. They were infinitely better with Tom Johnston/without McDonald but that doesn't mean they didn't produce some good music with MM. The Katy Lied/Royal Scam/Aja stuff is gold...

      @@drocker4729 That Dawn Patrol record is really nice - very smooth but in a good way (like mellower Steely Dan) with great horns & some 'hidden' oomph. Saw it described as "a melding of European pop with a 70s Softrock spirit". The only track I wasn't really into was "Never Giving Up". Out on Bandcamp for anyone who wants to check it out. I'd actually rank it end-to-end above any solo Michael McDonald that I've heard, I think anyone who likes Gaucho/Aja will like this one ("Blossom" is pure SD/later solo Fagen) - it honestly could be a 'lost' SD album from that period...
      I don't have that Delicate Steve album but have heard it on YT. Some of it's good but I prefer that type of music to have vocals. As instrumentals they remind me too much of those early 60's instrumental bands that I never really got into. I believe they've got several more albums...
      213 is with Jeff Porcaro & Vinnie Colaiuta (what a drummer!), and Carlos Rios from Novo Combo (s/t & Animation Generation are great albums). The tracks I've heard on YT from Three Little Words sound pretty good - I liked maybe 4 tracks of the 9. From what I've read this was recorded in 1981 & "found" recently. Looking to add this one to the library!

    "Kid Charlemagne" (Steely Dan) doesn't even get a mention? BOOOOO!

      @@airock937 I'll accept that! It's basically just a few seconds in the last chorus when you truly hear him, but what a great few seconds those are.
      Quite frankly, I'm not a huge fan of MM's usual multi-tracked backup vocals; I mean, it's not like he spoils e.g. "Peg", "Bad Sneakers" or the later Doobies' songs for me, but... sometimes a little ear fatigue creeps in.

    I saw Michael solo at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. Late 80s, not sure the exact year. Had forgotten about that show!

    Tom Johnston was terrific, Michael McDonald was cool on the vocals as well but when Simmons started singing I dozed off....To me he was the Steve Lukather of the Doobies lol plenty of ego but the others all sang and wrote FAR better.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 2 місяці тому

      No issues with Simmons here - his 1998 Take Me To The Highway album is pretty good. His first solo record Arcade to me sounds very much like a McDonald-era Doobies album (R&B/rock) - which is to say not as good as 'classic' Doobies but not bad with some high points. McDonald plays/sings on it & there are great guests: Lee Sklar, Bill Payne, Chris Thompson, Alan Pasqua, Victor Feldman, Skunk Baxter, Cornelius Bumpus, Nicky Hopkins, Willie Weeks, Tower Of Power. The Doobies' (later) vocal harmonies are pretty much intact...
      And with the Doobies Simmons sang: "South City Midnight Lady", "Dependin' On You", "Echoes of Love", "Closer Every Day", "LIsten To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Without You", "Evil Woman", "Wheels of Fortune", "Tell Me What You Want,", "Daughters of the Sea" and "Black Water" among others (he also wrote/co-wrote these). He was also in a country rock band called The Sky Kings (two albums - I have their 2014 album called 1992 which is OK)...BTW Tiran Porter who soured on playing the classic Doobie music for some reason also had a pretty decent solo album called Playing To An Empty House which features a mix of musical styles (some of it's pretty jazzy). I believe he plays pretty much all instruments on it

      @@wolf1977 I wish the Doobies had recorded some albums with both Tom and Michael into the 80s..I liked maybe 3 of the tracks Simmons did the vocals on,the other hits just sound far better for me....I think Michael sort of added what Carl did to 38 Special a decade later, wasn't really replacing anyone + it was a bit poppier/sleek but no harm done.

      @@ericrobertson2024 I GREATLY prefer the Johnston Doobies (even the Cycles & later stuff some of which is to me excellent) but I don't hold hate in my heart for McDonald & the changes he brought to the band like some Doobies fans do...
