I discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and, as a man of 53, wanted to thank you. I've always tried to wear clothes that complement me, however you have pointed out many bad-fashion items that somehow remain in my wardrobe. I have been inspired to give it an overhaul, and to donate my less fashionable items. I don't know why I have been hanging on to the ugly stuff, but that ends now. There is always a reason to look nice. Much appreciated.

As a man over 40 who went from having 20/20 vision to having to wear reading glasses, one of the best pieces of advice I can offer is to purchase a vanity mirror and do a self inspection once a week. Makes a huge difference in how you present yourself.

I agree. I work in construction and roofing the past 20 years. But when I am off work, I like to clean up and look presentable, dress in nice clothes, wear a nice watch, and have a nice hair style. Just because I have a hard labor job doesn’t mean I can’t look presentable and well dressd on my days off.

If you’re going to go the fragrance route guys, go easy on the application! In my experience, women love the clean smell of plain old soap! Great tips as always John!

    • @dirkt6921
      @dirkt6921 4 роки тому +4

Chris Davis But you rarely get compliments with soap, lol. You can notice the effect of some fragrances clearly by the distance people (women) keep when talking to you on parties or in bars. They stand a lot closer when I wear D&G Invictus aqua, f.e., or Versace pour homme. Most of them also like Dior sauvage a lot!... In cold season they find warmer and spicier fragrances more attractive (YSL la nuit de l'homme, Zara's Rich, warm, addictive ...). Very nice side effect of a fragrance 😃

Really a simple and effective solution to limp collar syndrome and they don't cost some crazy price.

    I had an epiphany once.
I'd always assumed that tradesmen-types didn't care about their appearance - they wore their grubby high-viz shirts or T-shirts, long sweaty hair hanging down, randomly growing facial hair, plumber's crack - but then I saw the light when I noticed that they all wore $300 Ray Ban sunglasses!
Of course they care about their appearance, and their image is carefully groomed - they go to a lot of trouble for that whole look!
So yes guys, we DO care about our appearance.

On the subject of not caring what people think, that is a major area of study in my life. I diligently pursue a life of truly not caring about what people think about me. But, I have split a hair, and I think you will find it useful.
Caring what people are thinking, and caring about people's opinions of you personally, are different. They have a connection, to be sure, but, I strongly encourage you to care what people are thinking, because, as they think, so are they. Knowing what they are thinking is powerfully useful information in predicting their future behavior.
What they think of me personally? The dots and stars of the Wemmicks in the story You Are Special speaks of the way we are supposed to pro-actively NOT CARE what people think of us. Great videos! A most welcome addition to my morning regime of self-directed continuing education!

My grandfather used to say to me there are men who look like they are in charge, and there are men that are in charge. The goal in life is to be both, so you never have to guess where you are in a situation. I always found it a bit odd, but the older I get (39) I understand what he means. Dress for you, but remember that you are a representation of your company and the people around you, so take some time to be the best you. Never understood handsome men that just needed a little push, but thought it was effeminate. Its like guy, I am not looking to get you to switch lifestyles but there is a reason why I get the clients and am only semi-attractive, but dress well, and can carry a conversation, where the pretty guys/gals, who are knockouts, just don't use it to their advantage. It's just such a weird dichotomy, and lack of self-awareness. I am truly not saying to be superficial, but read a book, have an opinion. Get a nice watch, its a conversation starter. Double down on this advice if you are ugly. If you got banged out teeth, and funky BO and then say that society judges you too harshly, it ain't our society that has the problem. Sometimes a middle finger to the norms is needed, but more often than not before you buck the trend, understand why that was the basis and the trend. Respect the history...Shine your god damn shoes

I'd add jewelry. I've met men that outside of work, won't wear any jewelry, not even a wrist watch. IMO, that's a flag. But a big red flag is the guy that wears too much jewelry. Braided leather wrist bangle bracelets with a watch and a cuff with excessive rings, earrings and necklaces. Unless you're an international rock star, you're in koo-koo land territory.

Teeth. Says a lot about your socio-economic status and your lifestyle. After that I don't know. I have a gap in my front teeth which I sometimes show just to be ornery. It used to be shoes and watches, but those days are long gone. It's more about being comfortable in high status situations. Your guy, who's never wore a suit before, is going to feel awkward at a wedding, while us guys who've worn it as a second skin for most of our lives, don't have that problem. They have subtle ways, these high status people, of sorting the dross from the silver.

Good list, and some very obvious ones, but which sadly some guys ignore. The bad breath one...I will never understand why that one gets overlooked. No one wants to talk to someone who smells like they've got something dead in their mouth. It's fairly obvious, and quite easy to do something about.
The collar one wouldn't have occurred to me. I would just lump that in with the shirt in general...will have to pay more attention to it in future.
Sorry, but only an arrogant arsehole doesn't care what other people think about them.

I really dislike it when men undo two buttons on their shirt fronts like you have done, sorry. I think one is enough. M.

I always do two, and the fact that it annoys you makes it all the more rewarding.

I once saw a chap who had left undone two buttons. His choice, of course. However, it also seemed to be the choice of his chest hairs to attempt an escape. M.

Rover Coupe My chest hairs are the reason I only undo one button. IMO it looks tacky to show chest hairs, especially at work or running errands.
