AMAZING! Bowie performs "The Alabama Song" by Bertold Brecht live in Berlin 2002. Watch out for the part where he sticks out his tongue at Gail Ann Dorsey...so sexy ;-)
While I enjoy "The Doors" Version, David puts the theatrical element back into the song taking it to a whole other level. Ode to the bizarre and perverse that Brecht would have been proud of. Fucking amazing. I never get tired of listening to it.
how is it that most people don't get that this is way closer to the original than the, although pretty good, simplified version by the doors? this one is the real deal. amazing histrionic showing by David.
I get it, but this is precisely why I personally like the Doors version better. The Doors made it their own song and completely altered it. That's what the song needed. It needed to be melodic. It needed to be a smooth experience, not dissonant and harsh like the original. And that's what the Doors did. Bowie's version was still good, just not as good as the Doors' version, no matter how "accurate" Bowie's version was.
It is from something like an opera. It´s a very old song, by Bertold Brecht an collaborators. The Doors and David just made a cover. I learned ths a couple of days ago
I never get tired of this song...Bowie does it so very well....I am mildly obsessed with it, I like Marilyn Manson and Nina Hagen's covers too, but this is one of my favourite versions, he does Brecht proud!
They arranged it for their instruments but did not write the tune. Kurt Weill composed it for Brecht's lyrics, among probably dozens of songs in the six plays and three cantatas they wrote together
Bowie does this Weill classic well! I usually don't like covers of musical theater songs, but A) Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht songs transfer pretty well and B) Daivd Bowie truly understand this music. I love it!
No matter how many times I watch this, I can never stop smiling, : ) the greatest musical genius of all time and yet he still has the ability to really have fun and make us all laugh. Brilliant. ♥♥♥♥♥
This songs is my favourite song performed by The Doors which is my favourite band. However, Bowie’s performance of the song is about as brilliant as it gets
Das ist ein toller Song über das Phänomen, dass man gemeinhin als Sucht bezeichnet und Bowie hat hier das Zeug dazu es vom tragischen ins Komische zu bringen.... ONLY GREAT!!!
im 11 years old first time i watched david bowies version and thought it sucked but then i got into it now i cant stop lisnting to it lolz rip sir david bowie xxx
"And when i was living in my apartment in Berlin i would sing this every morning" First time i have seen him live make fun of his Cocaine habit whilst making the Low album His recording studio sessions in Berlin drove him crazy - he spent more time on Marlborough cigs outside the studio than on the keyboards. Nice to see him laugh about it!
i rarely listen to bowie, but he is amazing in labrynth and i respect all of his work. and i love any version of "alabama song", especially this one. such a sad schlager song rendered beautifully by him and the whole band. BOWIE'S IN SPACE!
I just love this video, it's so fun to watch. David Bowie is not only a great singer, but he also knows how to have fun and really entertain an audience. It's one of the things that make him so special, his terrific sense of humor.
it's weird how tastes differ...I am an absolute Doors fanatic, but I think this cover is just stunning...Bowie does it justice and totally makes it his own...he has such an amazing voice...his delivery is intimate and heartfelt, and completely different from Jim Morrison's....
@@pdumpsterful I like the Doors cover too, but for sake of accuracy, this is closer to the original rendition of the two...It was a Bertolt Brecht poem that was set to music in 1927.
He spent time in Berlin in the late 1970-early'80's recovering from substance abuse and trying to find himself again. This song came from that period, and also may have come from his flirtation with Anthony Newely music that he had in the mid 1960's.
wot a voice - totally unique - i endlessly hear musicians who sound like him but no1 is the same & can capture that croaking operatic tone that's note perfect & warped at the same time.. & wot a performer! (born 4 the stage X)
this is the BEST.
He was so himself, and just didn't care what anyone thought. He did what he thought made sense - love that he sang Brecht.
This was my favorite period of Bowie/may favorite Bowie form
I miss his presence but I love how he says "every morning"
What a fantastic vocal range he has. His singing style seems economical so easy. He makes it look so easy. It's divine.
Ffar out brussel sprout.
+ThePaulv12 He was in full control. He most of the time did his vocals on first take in the studio.
While I enjoy "The Doors" Version, David puts the theatrical element back into the song taking it to a whole other level. Ode to the bizarre and perverse that Brecht would have been proud of. Fucking amazing. I never get tired of listening to it.
This blows
Not a good rendition of Alabama songs. The doors kill it
I'll never get tired of this video.
Haha I was just thinking this right now, such a great performance.
True
how is it that most people don't get that this is way closer to the original than the, although pretty good, simplified version by the doors? this one is the real deal. amazing histrionic showing by David.
There is no original, it wasnt a song it was poetry.

Nina Simones version trumps all
I love how this feels like it's from an opera. The insanity exuded is so great.
It is from something like an opera. It´s a very old song, by Bertold Brecht an collaborators. The Doors and David just made a cover. I learned ths a couple of days ago
In the play Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, it is sung by a group of prostitutes traveling to the newest boom town.

I love this version. I could honestly listen to you sing all day.
Auf wiedersehen David !
+WREMBEL Roger Rest in Peace
Love the voice of his bassist. Have seen a lot of videos of her as his bassist, but this is the first time I noticed her voice. It's so awsome.
This video is so charming, honestly watching it brightens my day. I can't believe that he's in his late fifties here, he's so sexy and cute?!
Thanks David ... text of this message ....... wonderful musician who has meant so much in decades
Bowie is good at irony, which is essential for this song.
+Melvyn Elphee RIP David
Real artists do not rest in peace. They live on.
Melvyn Elphee Thats true I can still hear his music remember his golden years rather than mourn his death.
@@nssteampunk4865 I see what you did there.
David Bowie for ever!!!!!!!
A comedian friend of Bowies said to him
"is'nt it about time you got a real Job David"
He replied " I have a real Job"

Ricky Gervais
Yeah it was Ricky I saw it in their email correspondence
Just ‘a comedian’ Ricky gervais is one of the best comedians

Brilliant as only David Bowie can be. Thanks for posting, have never seen this before and I have been mad about Bowie since 1970!
Contrary to popular belief this was not written by the Doors by was a poem in Bertolt Brecht's Hauspostille from 1927
OMG--you know Clown Vomit!
The Doors wrote the music though...
They arranged it for their instruments but did not write the tune. Kurt Weill composed it for Brecht's lyrics, among probably dozens of songs in the six plays and three cantatas they wrote together
Didn’t it have to do with post-war sentiment (of traumatized veterans) or did my professor lie to me?
Bowie does this Weill classic well! I usually don't like covers of musical theater songs, but A) Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht songs transfer pretty well and B) Daivd Bowie truly understand this music. I love it!
I love Bowie's different interpretations of the Alabama Song

This version is actually close to what the original opera version is like. Bowie did a great job!

Great performance
You can imagine the look on their faces at RCA when he put this out as a single.
The Baal stuff is very nice too. Amazing vocal power.
Great version!
This is pure Weill and Bowie's voice suits it like a glove. Pity about the changed verse but.

Never ending sexual frustration.
Does Bowie had some kind of obsession or worship with Germany?
Más o menos, sí.
IgNaceus Y tal vez con el espacio también.
He spent time in Berlin in the late 1970-early'80's recovering from substance abuse and trying to find himself again. This song came from that period, and also may have come from his flirtation with Anthony Newely music that he had in the mid 1960's.
He probably loves the culture. He was also a huge fan of German Expressionist films and filmmakers that's for sure.
He is absolutely and tremendously wonderful!
