Welcome to the January 2024 episode of the “Not Quite Enough Yarn” Podcast.
This is the story of my attempt at working my way through the stash, but without enough of each single colour to make a sweater.

The “Modification MAL” will run until Sept 2024
Works in progress allowed if started no earlier than 24th December 2023.
Prizes will be drawn 1/4ly from posts on this thread. Each quarter there will be a physical prize (probably yarn), from a post with a picture, and a pattern prize (up to US$15) for a post without a picture.
At the beginning of October a grand prize will be drawn - the winning entry must be a picture of a Finished Object.

What crafts are involved?
All types of knitting or crochet.
All project types are eligible.
What counts as modification?
• Pattern creation - if you design your own patterns, please feel free to include them here.
• Change of structure/dimensions - eg, making something shorter, longer, wider etc.
• Change in construction - eg adding a different heel type, working a pattern in the round when it was written for flat, changing the neckline, making a sweater into a cardigan, adding shaping or darts, etc.
• Including patterns which change gauge - eg cables or colourwork, where modifications are needed to keep the garment size the same.

Dear Lesley, my heart has gone out to you this episode. I could hear in your voice that you were getting poorly and it could not have hit at a worse time. Your Dad’s funeral was was bad enough but feeling Ill at the same time was not helpful. I am so pleased that you attended no matter what- it was the right thing for you to do. My sincere condolences to all your family at this sad time. Sorry about the yarn festival but there will be many more in the future. Get knitting on your teddy bear coat and enjoy it! What a month you’ve had. I’m so sorry for all the difficult and sad things, but appreciate the time you’ve put into creating content for UA-cam. Life does have to go on, but do make sure you take time to rest and look after yourself. Don’t go back to work too soon (comfort knitting is a very positive thing though, so well done!) xxx

It’s always hard… grieving is personal and losing a parent at whatever age is difficult.

My Dad died twenty years ago this year, taken far too soon, but it's a huge shock even when you're expecting it. My heart goes out to you and your family. While my grief has not left, it has become easier to live with over time. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to decide to go to the funeral even though you were ill, but I agree it was the right choice for you. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress with the red and purple "teddy bear" jacket 💜🧶💜🧶💜

I feel for you. Big hugs!!! I'm glad that you went. I had 4 skeins of Jude's yarn in my basket and before I could pay for it it was all gone. 2 skeins of Stranded Elf, and 2 of his purple-bluish( I can't remember the name). Your skein that you spun(purple and blue) is lovely. I've been doing a lot of charity knitting. I need to do something for me. I'm going to look at the magpie pattern or the Boxie. The Boxie looked great crocheted. I akso decided to do something with all the small leftover yarn balls. I'm doing my first Granny Stripe blanket. I think for the older lady next door. The yarn or pattern will always tell us if it's not happy! I frogged a shrug I was making for my sister. I dreaded working on it. I am now doing a different pattern, and it's flying off the needles.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Lesley. You absolutely made the right decision to go. Even though I'd said my goodbyes (mentally) to both parents before they died, nothing feels entirely real until after the funeral.

I finally made time to sit down and knit on a sock while catching up with you. I am sorry you had to deal with that dreaded virus on top of grieving. I hope it physical illness has passed and you feel supported in your grieve.
I think your teddy bear cast on is a great choice. 🥰One of the most sensible colour combos I have seen you make, in my not so humble opinion.🤭I am joking, but I do love the colours and the fluffiness! 🐻
Thanks Nanja. The physical illness passed quickly and the grief is not as "bad" as I thought it would be. Each grief is different, I suppose.

Comfort knitting is so necessary sometimes. Have you heard of the Emotional Support Chicken? Knitted with lots of short rows, all in garter stitch, sewn together, stuffed (I'm going to use aran weight wool scraps). Rather sweet, multiple modifications possible in terms of yarns and colours. Comforting thoughts to you, dear Lesley

I am so sorry to hear of your Dads passing. I was 23 when my Dad died of brain cancer. He was only 55. I worked a second shift job and my Mom and siblings worked day shift. That meant I got to spend a lot of time with him one on one. Growing up I had 6 siblings so I always felt I didn't get enough one on one time with him. We had some great conversations!

My heart breaks for you. I have lost both of my parents at younger ages so I understand your grief. I also understand grief crafts, I started crocheting and any other craft to keep my hands busy and head empty. when my mom passed. I am sending you strength and prayers and big internet hugs.

So sorry to hear about your dad - big thoughts your way - I really enjoy your channel. I used to listen to it at my dad's place, but sadly I lost my own dad last year and the grief remains huge and daily. So I valued your comment about those of us out there with grief. Thank you. On a lighter note I really like the boxy baggy look for my knits too (very basic knitter myself and can't read patterns! )

What a month for you and then to get Covid. The rules say you can continue going to work even if you've tested positive so it is in no way irresponsible to go to your dad's funeral. I hope you feel better soon and the sadness of losing someone so close to you eases with each passing day. Comfort crafting and plenty of Heidi hugs are recommended. Xxx

Thank you. No, it doesn't have to be cotton at all - the original was a cotton/acrylic mix, and so I just stayed "in that area".
