Toronto has a huge amount of fans so it’s reasonable to expect a larger number of over the top individuals. The power rankings are steady weekly content as an overview of the league but nothing to be taken too seriously. Just enjoy the free entertainment.
Your cat is my spirit animal. Talking about the canucks? Stretch (twice!). Talking about the leafs? Posterior housekeeping. Talking about Colorado? Nap time. Thanks for the content, I enjoy it.
One reason Avs don't seem to be dominating opponents lately (besides missing key players) is because they're experimenting with lineups since they pretty much have the conference locked up. At this point they're more interested in seeing what every single player can bring instead of trying to get wins by force feeding players they already know are good. There wasn't a lot of that lineup experimenting tonight, but I think it was still important to mention for those who were thinking all these close games lately were actually a sign of a problem.
I heard Rantanen's interview where he said they have been moving the focus more the defence so once the playoffs start they are more ready for that style of hockey.
Coach Bednar has stated this for a couple of months now. He wants to play around with Line Combos now and figure out what works, rather than when it is forced in the Postseason👍
Kuemper had an unreal performance tonight. Stood on his head through an overtime that was basically a shooting gallery for McDavid, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins. 49 saves, 11 of which come in OT. Just a marvel
And the Oilers looked to be in on him at the trade deadline. Instead, they felt he was a little pricey for them, and they got a look at what they could have had instead of either Smith or Koskinen. That's not to discredit what they have as their current tandem. I mean, this was only their second loss of the season when they surrender two or fewer goals. I am just saying Keumper could have been an upgrade on their current tandem, but Holland felt the asking price was a little steeper than he could afford, so he passed on him.
Finally someone says it on a video, Makar is complete. Including his defensive play. There is no knocking his abilities. I know everyone wants to hate on the best, but him and Josi are straight up in a league of their own as defenders.
He plays well defensively but is prone to bad turnovers when exiting his own zone. But that's something a lot of the more talented players do, whether they're forwards or defensemen. They get into a mindset that they can beat anyone 1 on 1.
Makar is god dam dangerous I’m happy MK made this big saves last night every time Makar had the puck oilers looked in trouble. I just love the people that say stuff and you can tell they didn’t watch the game at all.
I as a Leafs fan have never complained about were you put them in the rankings, I enjoy watching the power rankings every week regardless were you put them. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy seeing them closer to number 1 but i’ll accept them being moved down if they’ve been garbage. I’m glad though you zone out from the complaining and do what you feel is right
@@barx I only meant that they had regular season success then lost immediately. It doesn’t always translate. The Kings won as an 8 seed. Vox does a cool video of Skill vs Will: NBA v NHL playoffs.
Shannon, I've been a fan of Hockey for years. I am so glad to find your channel. I am a diehard Avs fan, even during the bad years. This run the Avs are on seems different, feels different from a fans perspective. The look more mature, I hear sometimes on the ice the communication that is happening in every shift. But im also a realist too. I've seen the second round exits. New season starts in the Playoffs, it's where the big boys play. I feel the Avs have a legit shot this year.
Oilers/Avs game was an amazing one to watch! Edmonton was in control for most of the game, and made very few mistakes, which is good to see at this point in the season. Koskinen played probably his BEST game of the year, but then so did Kuemper at the other end of the ice. He absolutely stole 2 points for the Avs. Great, great game!!! Would love to see these 2 in the Conference finals!
Edmonton was not in control most of that first period more like hanging in there Edmonton did take control of period two and both teams went back and fourth in period three. In OT it was all Edmonton and Colorado got lucky to still be tied after that in the SO Edmonton got destroyed so if you look at it kinda a fair game back and forth
Agree, folks saying this was boring are fools. It was high risk back n forth between 2 fast Teams. I'm on the other end of you and the dorks on postgame DNVR called it a boring first 2 periods. I don't know what else you can ask for in an "edge of your seat" game🤷♂️
@@ryans413 The high danger chance split at 5v5 was 83% Edmonton and 17% Colorado per Natural Stat Trick lol. Edmonton played very well at 5v5 in the last two games against Colorado. When they played them a few weeks ago they held Colorado to 16 shots and 0 goals at 5v5.
Scary thing is the rightful 5v5 concern for the NYR which was definitely warranted has been completely tossed in the bin. Since the deadline they have been one of the best 5v5 teams itl in every 5v5 analytic. Top 5 in 5v5 offense and top 5 in 5v5 defense. They took their biggest weakness and have made it a strength now that they have depth, partner that with the best goalie itl this season and they could be dangerous.
Yeah, Copp and Vatrano have really helped. Braun replacing the huge liability that is Nemeth helped too. Schneider looks great too, so a bottom d pairing of him and Braun is pretty good. Another big edge for them is that their side of the east isn’t overly scary. Hoping Tampa gets ahead of Boston, so the Rangers only have to beat some combination of Boston, Pittsburgh, and Carolina, or potentially Washington if they overtake Pittsburgh. The other side of the east has Toronto, Florida, and most likely Tampa, whoever comes out of that mess will be in rough shape. Likely 2 series of 6-7 hard fought games. Whereas the Rangers could take teams like Boston or Pittsburgh in 4-5 I think.
As a Pens fan, these last 2 -1/2 weeks or so have been really concerning. 3 Losses to NYR, 2 Losses to Colorado, Loss to NSH and BUF. Need to beat good teams to make it in the Playoffs.
Always a pleasure to watch this on a hungover Sunday morning here in good ol' Europe! I agree with you on Dallas, it felt like they have destroyed their playoff hopes yesterday
So happy with the Flames. Depth scoring, grinding out low-scoring games, PK looking good. Hope they can keep that focus and drive closing out the rest of the season
The Flames were relatively the healthiest team all season long with less than 40 man games lost. The pacific standings results could've very likely been much different right now if the Flames roster health went the other way around
Their top line of Gaudreau Lindholm Thackuk are ridiculous. All 3 are tops in the league in +/- in that order, totalling +152. 261 points and 106 goals. Insane.
@@thedevilsadvodkate They were fairly dominant in 2019 too. Disappeared in the playoffs. Gaudreau had ZERO goals and ONE point. Not saying it's that bad this year, but they haven't proven diddly squat so far.
Looking at Vancouver, in order to make the playoffs they'll probably need to beat Vegas on Tuesday and Dallas next Monday in regulation, if they let those teams get points against them they're probably done
These are awesome Power Rankings. To see the Oilers ahead of the Hurricanes is exactly the point. I didn’t realize where the Oilers were and have watched the Canes machine slow down.
Based on their schedule, I fully expect the Oilers to drop out of the top of the board by the end of the season. They could even be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.
Thing with the Avalanche is Bednar has been experimenting with lines and d pairs the past few weeks so he doesn't have to find out what works and doesn't work during a playoff series. Also the team has heen stressing defensive play lately as well
Toronto fan here and your treatment has always been fair of the team in my opinion. The fans think we are the best in a division that has been home to some of the tops 5 teams for years. So far we need to ride what is happening as we only have two players in the top 25 which is showing we are relying on two players to carry us. Will be an interesting playoff run for sure.
I'm glad that you did not drop Buffalo too much. They did get that win over Carolina, but then had those two close games against the Canes and Panthers where they just could not hold on.
Thanks again for another great video, Shannon. I hope you have a great week. Edit: I’m a Blues fan, and I totally agree with your logic on the Blues vs. Wild rankings. Although, I have to offer an obligatory, “why oh why does big bad Shannon hate my favorite team??”
Great video Shannon. God I’m getting amped for playoffs. Oilers fan and The oilers avs game definitely had that vibe being so low scoring and you’re right kuemper was insane, definitely felt the oilers should have come out with a win, he made 11 saves in overtime! Ahhh, sick part is they play one more time before the end of the regular season. Has been ot and shootout can’t wait for round three! And I love what you said about makar, haha “I know I’m talking to someone who has never watched makar play.” So true. I like how people just assume since he has 25 goals he must not play defence which is simply not true. And he’s so dangerous every time he gets it in the offensive end I flinch every time he has it because he can absolutely rip it
Oilers fan here Makar is god dam dangerous he made some pretty epic defensive plays back checking shot blocks wicked passing yea when people say he’s just offence I know right then they didn’t watch the game. I wish we had this guy on the oilers to replace Nurse this is how Nurse should be for what he’s getting paid to do.
@@ryans413 he makes more than makar! It’s so painful every time I think about that. Can’t get over how stupid Holland was signing him to that after he had the only good offensive season of his career and he didn’t even have to sign him because it wasn’t a contract year, just a complete moron. And nurse has been so awful defensively the last month or two. Like it’s one thing that he produces almost nothing offensively but to suck defensively on top of that while making over nine million, making more than draisiatl! Insanity. Makar is such an insane talent but on top of that has such a good head on his shoulders and understood if he took 11 million he’d just be screwing himself out of a successful team. Nurse had no problem with that. Could care less about winning. Seems to have got his contract and stopped playing. One of the big reasons it’s hard to believe they will win a cup. It’s one thing to have to pay big money to two players on your team, but those two produce so much, it is completely worth it. But we basically are going to be missing like five million for the next eight years because of this contract. Nurse for me on his best nights, is not noticeable, it at least means he didn’t make any defensive mistakes. But jeez for 9.25 million, you should dam well be noticeable. Ah sorry that contract drives me absolutely nuts
Ok, maybe Shannon doesn't hate the Oilers :) I actually thought they were only gonna be in 9-10th spot. Sure they had a great game against Colorado, and came off 6 wins but they were against the California teams and most cup contender teams can do that :) but yeah I'll take 7th this weekend :) Also a special note to a struggling Mike Smith who has improved quite a bit lately. Still have doubts about going the distance with these 2 goalies. Just when we are getting some confidence both Koskinen and Smith have let us down earlier this year. I am a bit happier with Oilers defense but they still make some bad giveaways in the D Zone. Luckily tonight Colorado couldn't capitalize on the giveaways, and very few breakaways for them either...
Always love these videos Shannon! As a Blues fan, not upset about being behind Minnesota.... I think the bigger head scratcher is being behind Edmonton. Blues have 4 more points (with a game in hand), better goal differential, identical record in last 4 games, most players in the NHL with 20+ goals & just tied a franchise record with 8 games in a row scoring 4 or more. Then again, the team seems to thrive when it isn't getting as much love so maybe they're exactly where they need to be.
Agreed, but remember how much love our Blues got in 2019? NBC was still expecting the Bruins to win with 1 minute left in game 7, almost everyone (exceptTHG) looked at our boys over their nose and discredited consistent effort as a fluke. So, yeah, I'm perfectly fine with everyone overlooking the Blues again
Rangers picked up up some subtle, but very key, improvements at the trade deadline and have really been clicking lately. If the can keep up the level of play and momentum, they could make a serious run to win another Cup. Also being a Winnipeg fan, it has been nice to see how well Copp has fit in with the Rangers. Unfortunately for the Jets, they continue to be a team with fantastic potential that can't manage to consistently play well.
Being a leaf fan, I've seen this same story year after year after year. Great in the regular season, then fail miserably in the playoffs. I'm very happy with where this team is right now, but I refuse to get my hopes up UNTIL they get out of the first round. If that happens, then maybe my heart rate will rise while watching a game or allow my mind to wander and think about what could happen.
Playoffs are a crapshoot. Tampa got swept as president’s trophy winner. Leafs have their problems but if you look at defensive metrics this the best ever. Bad goaltending has been an issue for part of the season, but not defensive play. Their best ever season winning % was last year and this year is trending as the new #1. There is a gambling fallacy where you believe that past results will always reflect the future. There can only be one cup winner but Toronto has never been better positioned to win a round at least this year. I see them in final four or finals this season.
Just waiting for the wild fans to come out the gate for a second week in a row to say they're a top row team :) Nice rankings this week Shannon, only teams I might have swapped are the blues and the oilers. The blues are clicking VERY well and Husso looks very comfortable in net, very happy the Avs don't play them round 1 this year.
@@dennybarlau8065 I'll say exactly what I said last week. They are not a dominant team and that's what keeps them in the 2nd row. They do not dominate teams to win, they have to grind to the very end to ensure a W. Every top row team besides the oilers dominates.
@@chanses7576 the problem with your thinking . the wild have a loseing record To only Nashville and Florida They are 20 and 5 against the east 11-2 against the metro They have one game left with Colorado Of which there. 1-2 The wild will play st Louis in the first round and Colorado for the championship
@@dennybarlau8065 the problem with your think is thinking that 32 regulation wins out of 44 total wins is good. 7 3 on 3 OT wins and 5 SO wins is not a high caliber team, you're just coin tossing games at that point. The wild couldn't make it through the blues or flames let alone the avs.
I was down on the Caps in a fairly recent video saying they had to show me something. Well, after winning today against Boston, yes, they are showing something. This is their 3rd win against a quality team in a row, against Tampa, Pittsburgh, and now Boston, (and this was a back to back). We'll see if they continue it, but this is a good sign. Go Caps!
Ugh, my Kings are faultering. I thought the would finish second. Now I’m just hoping the make it to the playoffs. Bad thing is, if they are the last Wild Card it won’t be fun going against Colorado
Kings will keep 3rd don’t worry too much there was a time I thought Edmonton was done they battled back it’s an insane climb they did kings just gotta stay focused only a few games left
One thing about the Coyotes, they do have a lot of injuries. So they are taking this time to look at a lot of their prospects that normally would be playing for the Tucson Roadrunners. I don’t expect them to win much for the rest of the year. I do get a chance to watch some new guys and see how they adjust their game. The players are not giving up and I have hope in the future with all the draft picks and cap space.
It's not even a recent thing. Carolina has not looked good for a long time now. They just can't score. They constantly outplay and outshoot their opponent but only end up making the opposing goalie a hero. Really frustrating team to cheer for lately.
the scariest team in the east branch of the playoffs rn is.. the wildcard? boston looks super good and tampa is tampa. god i hate being a rangers fan rn cause i just knooow im gonna be disappointed no matter what
@@zTeaTheCoffee Sure, Boston has been on fire. But I still think Florida has been the best team in the east and I see no reason why they couldn't carry that into the playoffs. Rangers could be tough too, IF Shesterking keeps carrying them. Toronto looks pretty unstoppable too, but we all know Toronto and their first rounds.
Absolutely Francouz would have lost that game tonight. Not because he’s that bad at tracking the puck but because Keumper could handle the large volume of pucks flying at him tonight. He attacked every puck in the shootout like he was offended the oilers were even trying to find a hole. Best outing of the year for him, even though it wasn’t one of his shutouts.
When more then 70% of shots come from low percentage shooters you can’t expect much different! Sorry if you didn’t know Edmonton is shit after mcd n dri
Calgary be next once they hit 100 points then probably the Blues and Minnesota at 100 points Edmonton and LA will probably clinch at 95 points same with Nashville. Vegas and Dallas probably only take 92 points seeing which one of the two makes it probably Vegas
Shannon, think you can do a video once the seaosn is over, about Seattle's first season vs the Golden KNight's first season? What the differences were, why one was a big success and one Seattle had such a crap year? Differences in management etc..?
The hardest part of the Kings schedule is over and done with. Only 2 games left against teams above .500 and we have done very well against teams in those situations. That, the still tough schedule for Vegas, and having the fewest games left among the clubs in the hunt for the Pacific make me still very much a believer in our playoff odds.
The Kings still have Minnesota and Colorado coming up this week, and its the week that might matter most; if they lose both of those games it may not matter. And Vegas doesn't have much tougher of a schedule. They have Flames Oilers and Caps but also many games against teams under the playoff line. I fully expect the Kings to lose out, they've just been playing awful. My condolensces but it's not your team's year.
@@ryans413 Wow, do you even hockey? vegas been struggling?? They've won 6 out of 7 and are finally healthy. You sure are dumb for someone who consistently posts on these vids.
Hi Shannon, thanks for the fun video as usual. I'm wondering what you think of the idea of "Playoff teams" or "Regular Season teams"? I think the Atlantic has a pretty interesting situation with that
If you think he’s not getting love now, you crazy. I’m a Coyotes fan, I also watch a lot of hockey around the league too. For years Kuemper has been one the best goalies in the league and nobody talked about him or raanta at all even though both of them we’re KILLING it. Especially considering being behind the coyotes.
The playoffs are going to come down to matchups more then power rankings. If Minnesota can somehow squeak by either Nashville or the Blues, they can be the team to knock off Colorado but, that’s a big IF. Still like Calgary / Florida for the cup but no matter, it’s the best playoffs anywhere for any sport! Excited to watch with so many great teams this year. Great stuff!
Tampa hasn't been playing great against teams above the playoff line since the beginning of the calendar year. I wish I could share your optimism about their ability to get out of the first round of the playoffs, but I can't right now.
It's a lot of fun watching the power rankings and thank you for the hard work. However, I always wondered whether power ranking is ranking the team in general or their performances right now. If it's the former, then probably would be pretty boring since it would be rather static unless there were big surprises, but it would be pretty valuable since it would not be affected by noises. It's like stocks, you don't say this stock is better because it went up a lot in the last week, you would need to analyze its fundamentals. So to me, Tampa is way too low and Toronto is way too high since I still think Tampa has a more rounded team. I am a Leafs fan btw. It's an amazing team, they just have too many holes to be reliable.
Power rankings are not based on any given team's personnel and overall talent, it's how said team's personnel is currently playing. Let's face it, the Leafs have been playing a lot better than the Lightning over past two weeks - as has the Bruins. If you look at how the standings in the Atlantic Division have changed over the past few weeks, you'll notice *both* Toronto and Boston have not only have caught Tampa Bay, but have passed them as well - even though (on paper) Tampa Bay is considered to have the better and deeper team.
@@blackenedmagic888 Yeah, but it would mean nothing for the team's long term success. I still think Tampa is better built for the cup. Although I do see that moneypunk doesn't seem to agree.
@@wgemini4422 As I said, power rankings are basically how a team is _currently_ trending compared to the other teams - it's not necessarily indicative of a team's perceived talent and it's not meant to measure the possibility of a team's long-term success. Like you, I am a Leafs fan and I'm well aware of each of the Atlantic's top-four strengths and weaknesses. Quite honestly, I think Tampa Bay still has a very good team, but I also think people tend to overrate them because of the fact they've won the last two Stanley Cups and they're nowhere near as strong as they were last year.
@@wgemini4422 Why rank? Easy - because a team's overall record and even their "Last 10" record isn't always indicative of how a team is currently playing. For instance, say a team has a 3-1 record over a given week span but that one loss was a result of getting "goalied" (i.e.: massively outplaying and outshooting the opposition - only to lose because the opposing goalie stood on his head). In this case, the team played well enough to have a perfect 4-0 record (even though they had one loss) and this will be taken into account when doing a power ranking for that week. Also, not all wins/losses are created equal when doing power rankings - it depends on who you win or lose to and also _how_ you played in the game. If a team beats a playoff-bound team, then the win generally carries more weight than beating a bottom feeder. The same goes with losses - a loss to a strong team isn't usually as bad as losing to a weak team. I could go into much more detail, but I'll leave at this: if you look at power rankings for any given week, they won't be the same as the NHL's overall (points) rankings because the NHL's rankings are based on absolutes (wins or losses) while power ranking are more subjective (based on the author's personal criteria) - it's also why no two power rankings (i.e.: ESPN's and THG's) will be identical.
Super excited to see how the playoffs go this year, very high power, good goal scoring and great goaltending and defensive teams all around. Obviously very excited for my New York Rangers with how well they are clicking and always finding a way to win.
If Ovechkin scores 50 goals this season he will be the oldest 50 goal scorer in nhl history. The current record is held by, you guessed it, Jagr, who scored 54 goals at age 34.
Why don't all these doofuses realize that this is SHANNONS power rankings?? It's HIS opinion, and if you don't like it don't watch the damn video or at the very least don't comment about how X placement is wrong or the garbage like "you clearly don't watch the games". Are you kidding me?? This guy has been putting heart and soul into multiple daily videos for so long. But boo-hoo your Rangers aren't 3rd in someone else's rankings. Get a grip on your life and realize that spewing detritus on the internet has real world implications.
Let them have their opinions too, crikey. As long as they realize this is subjective ranking with fair objective standards and explanations I dont see the problem with people disagreeing. Its views and discussion which promotes the videos... Just keep it clean
@@idiotidiot5821 Yep I agree that nothing is wrong with normal discussions and disagreement, the issue is that a lot of those commentors make it into an attack on Shannon. He replied to a couple down below and that's what prompted me to comment on it. A few months ago he was even contemplating canceling the power rankings as a whole because of it. People simply take it too far and far too seriously
@@Sillywabbit22 i hadnt seen those. Most comments are by a wide margin within the lines. Personal attacks over opinions instead of just disagreeing with evidence or claims does nothing to proving those claims
I'd like to see a board where you do the power rankings on the whiteboard and show the distance between the teams, so instead of having the Avs and Panthers the same distance apart as the Panthers and Leafs, you would have in this case most likely the Avs and Panthers right next to each other with the Leafs a bigger distance back.
Some takeaways from this week: Rangers look dangerous now, they could make a deep run. Please don't hang out Shesrerkin to dry in the playoffs. Carolinas play has concerned me much like you, the way things have been I wouldn't be shocked if they're bounced round 1 As a Habs fan, it pains me to say Toronto looks dangerous now and can finally win a round. Matthews really is the best goal scorer in the league and everything looks to be clicking now. Got some exciting hockey ahead. Great content as always!
Can’t see Carolina losing round 1, unless the Rangers don’t surpass them and if they end up playing Tampa in round 1. Carolina would still be a decent favourite vs Pittsburgh or Washington or Boston, I’d say.
My biggest doubt about them is if they have to not only play Tampa in round 1, but then they’ll have to play Florida in round 2. Switch them with the Rangers, where they’d go up against easier teams in the first 2 rounds, and I’d be more optimistic about their chances. Tampa and Florida are scary teams to go up against in the first 2 rounds.
Isles need to move down 2 or 3 spots in the NHL standings. Right now we have no chance at the draft lottery with the new rules, we need to be 11th or 12th if we want a chance at the lottery.
Toronto was ranked as #2 on the moneypuck rankings which is a pure analytic model. Also worth noting they are tied for 2nd in regulation wins. Florida has 13 3/3 OT wins. I think that skews their performance this season. Being good at 3/3 OT isn’t the same as finishing games in regulation and it won’t translate to the playoffs. There are dumb fans in every fan base. Some are so dumb they are trying to argue against a 50 goal in 50 games being an accomplishment. It shows the “level” of “thinking” of some fans. Thinking has gone out the window in 2022 and I have noticed on social media it’s like many are simply brainwashed in their bias on a number of topics. But let’s not get into that here.
Isnt going to know as much about a specialty as someone that specializes but the specialist isnt going to know as much about everything. Just saying this is *usually* true with everything.
Its not a knock on Shannon either its just pointing out reality. You can't watch every single game at every detail like a diehard fan who only cares about one team does (especially with 5 to 8 games on at the exact same time) but that person wont know nearly as much about the league in general as someone like Shannon. Look at the comments sections after busy nights he does get some stuff wrong and anyone would. Still better than any other commentator imo. The more you spread yourself the less likely you are to be a specialist of something thats just the nature of how time works.
Rangers fan here. What you didn't say spoke volumes. That bozo Dolan had a tantrum and fired 2 of the best Hockey guys in the business. Gorton is the reason we have the roster we have, and JD is just a NYR legend and was guiding us in the right direction. Any success this team has in the next decade is due to Gorton and I hope it's recognized when it happens.
Dolan is a drunken clown and that whole episode was an embarrassment. his treatment of JD will never be forgotten nor forgiven. Gorton built this team the right way and that’s why they are on the brink of being a yearly post-season competitor for the near future.
Carolina has been scaring me. Wasn't worried about making playoffs but worried about our match up. If we had to play tampa I'm not sure how well we would hold up at the pace we've been playing the last 2 weeks.
Well it’s a little true he wants them too do good so he can make more videos about them I see it on the business side but I also see how other hockey fans might think it’s little bias that’s why Shannon try’s not to make so many videos but the same time he admits if he can make a Toronto video he will
Hahaha love your choice in attire this week shannon!! Looks great on ya! Im so happy with your rankings this week Absolutely perfect!! sorry im having a great time with matthews and his play recently. Having the best player in the world playing for your team is such a great feeling! I believe my leafs will play carolina in the first round, not boston. I also think campbell will show up this year, like he did last year! GO LEAFS!
I think the Eastern conference might be a bit misleading this year. I think the west has been more competitive, even the teams that look out of it like the Hawks and Anaheim seemed to have atleast been more relevant than Ottawa or Buffalo.
Don't include Buffalo in irrelevance, we have been relevant last 20 games at least and we beat the Hawks, or you can look it as Hawks blew a 4 goal lead to Buffalo, so they don't get to be more relevant than Buffalo 😂
@@SabresGuy87 I feel like the expectations between buffalo and the hawks were different this year. Buffalo has been having decent success but a bit too late. And the hawks were having a decent year too and just fell off. I'm a Blues fan hahaha, so I have no sympathy for the hawks. But seeing the record of Toronto, the Canes, and Panthers to me says they farmed every eastern conference team under 500, way more than most western conference teams were able to.
What these past weeks Buffalo has kept games close but I do kinda agree the west teams have had too battle hard to keep their spots where teams in the east just kinda in cruise control

But for a guy who's been a top 2 goalie in 2022,& had some unbelievable playoff performances in the bubble...granted small sample size,& does the best of 5 playin technically count as playoffs,...he still has much to prove in the playoffs. But there a lot of opposing fans,& more Av fans than you'd think, who are convinced,(& hoping)-Kuemper will melt down in the playoffs. I don't have a problem with them, though I disagree. It's completely fair to doubt if he can do it when it matters. What is ridiculous though,is the number of those people who somehow don't know how awesome he has been the last 4 months or so. A high percentage of those doubters keep talking about THIS SEASON, I guess cuz he started slow. But many of these people must not watch the games,or even pay attention to the results...cuz you can make no argument that he will fail, based on this regular season. There are fair arguments to make against him performing in the postseason. Like most things, there is fair criticism,or skepticism, that I can respect,& concede is very possible...even though I may disagree it will happen. Then there is just unfair, idiotic criticism,or skepticism-with no basis in reality. Those are usually casual opposing fans, who are just hoping he falls apart, cuz if their team is in the West, they can't honestly argue their team is more talented than Colorado-if they are fully healthy. Usually Wild fans-though not always. Hello Minnesotans...Duluth,& Mankato... winning the national title was sweeter... having to beat you in the regional final,& title game. And winning the West would be a bit sweeter,if we had to beat you 2nd round.
It would be kinda of nifty to see a power ranking after the final regular season one is completed, that’s just ranking based on the average position throughout the entire season and see how the two list compare.
Agree, Avs are not as free wheel as the were last year, it seems as if they need to earn that by play in theyre own end first, if I had to pick between Grubaur and Kuemper, now, its Kemp, plus ending McDavid point streak was bonus
Do you think DeBrusk, Tarasenko, or other players who had requested trades and then had a career renaissance of sorts might move teams in the offseason? I think "players who could be in different jerseys next year" would be an interesting concept for a video regardless
You know, with SportsNet partnering content creators, can we get a petition going to have Shannon as a hockey analyst? Like, the next Bob McKenzie imo, just with a nice splash of sarcasm and dry humor lol
Hey TORONTO fans.... its not windy in Buffalo but the leafs still blow! We're gonna be a real problm soon so keep your heads up. Tbh though i secretly hope they win it this year but the Sabres are finally on the right track
Toronto has a huge amount of fans so it’s reasonable to expect a larger number of over the top individuals.
The power rankings are steady weekly content as an overview of the league but nothing to be taken too seriously.
Just enjoy the free entertainment.
It’s just always entertaining seeing the occasional melodramatic ones with a massive victim complex tbh
Leafs are 8-1-1 in their last 10
Your cat is my spirit animal.
I heard Rantanen's interview where he said they have been moving the focus more the defence so once the playoffs start they are more ready for that style of hockey.
cool stuff
Coach Bednar has stated this for a couple of months now. He wants to play around with Line Combos now and figure out what works, rather than when it is forced in the Postseason👍
Kuemper had an unreal performance tonight. Stood on his head through an overtime that was basically a shooting gallery for McDavid, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins. 49 saves, 11 of which come in OT. Just a marvel
@@WaddickLawnCare -- Well you clearly didn't watch the game.
Natural Stats Trick had the high danger chances as 19-5 for the Oilers, Kuemper stole those 2 points
Both of Colorado's wins against Calgary this year were the exact same story. Kuemper has been unbelievable lately!
@@grahamdamberger7130 it was the off-season,not trade deadline. That's why Colorado had to up their offer....to beat out Edmonton.
I’m glad though you zone out from the complaining and do what you feel is right
How has your last power ranking of the year historically related to playoff performances? Just curious. Keep up the good work ✌️
This, would be super interested to see a video on this right before the playoffs begin, just to see where teams end up
@@barx there’s the year the Bolts had all those points then lost to the Blue Jackets.
Find last year's final ranking and compare it to the playoff results. Not very difficult to find out
@@HarrisonHollers Yeah there's also the two years after that when they won the cup both times, makes a little bit of the pain go away
Dammit I have to go to bed, Guess I can wait 31 minutes and 20 seconds
@@alu.304 it was a fantastic game I’d love to see these two matchup in the playoffs be fun
Congrats to the Rangers and Leafs for clintching playoffs spots....great night of hockey all around.
‘Clint-(Eastwood)-ching’ a playoff spot?
Lets be real, the NHL is more interesting when original six teams are strong and in the playoffs.
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Before deadline. Fewest Scoring Chances against: #24. Since the deadline. #1.
Yeah man it's kinda depressing
Carolina, my team, has been just as bad. But what can you do? Shannon was hard on them this week and they deserved every bit of it.
Always a pleasure to watch this on a hungover Sunday morning here in good ol' Europe!
I agree with you on Dallas, it felt like they have destroyed their playoff hopes yesterday
Boy that's relatable! Every saturday I go out drinking and I'm always waking up looking forward to watching the powerranking in the morning
The pk was not looking good. Other teams dating back to the Edmonton game were 7 for 16 up until last night.
Their top line of Gaudreau Lindholm Thackuk are ridiculous. All 3 are tops in the league in +/- in that order, totalling +152. 261 points and 106 goals. Insane.

You’re a legend, Shannon. Always such good takes on each team and their play. Thank you!
Looking at Vancouver, in order to make the playoffs they'll probably need to beat Vegas on Tuesday and Dallas next Monday in regulation, if they let those teams get points against them they're probably done
But if Vancouver dose squeeze in the last spot they will get Colorado lol good luck

@@jasonblue9297 They’re on fire right now And only allowed one goal against the best team in the NHL
Thing with the Avalanche is Bednar has been experimenting with lines and d pairs the past few weeks so he doesn't have to find out what works and doesn't work during a playoff series. Also the team has heen stressing defensive play lately as well
Best hockey channel/coverage. We don't always agree, but I'll take you over TSN/Sportsnet/Dangle any day. Go Leafs Go!
Also, god damn that's a nice board to display the rankings. You have some great fans.
Shannon, really love how much effort is put into every one of your channels! Love watching your videos everyday
“no spoilers either if you’re a time traveler” 😂 this is why we watch religiously unlike most analytics shannon has a personality
Kuemper is ready for the playoffs. You can see it and hear it in his interviews. He's having a lot of fun and he's focused on that Cup.
He was on Arizona, he's probably just excited that a deep playoff run is realistically possible for him.
Thanks for doing these power rankings, man.
They’re always fun to watch 😄
Ok, maybe Shannon doesn't hate the Oilers :)
I actually thought they were only gonna be in 9-10th spot. Sure they had a great game against Colorado, and came off 6 wins but they were against the California teams and most cup contender teams can do that :) but yeah I'll take 7th this weekend :)
Also a special note to a struggling Mike Smith who has improved quite a bit lately.
Don't see worry about being behind my Wild here. More likely than not, you will pass my Wild in first round. MAF is NOT an asset
Shootout for that awesome board. That with every puck in the league is such a beautiful collectible
No spoilers time travelers! Lol Gotta lovs Shannon.
Great vid this week! No arguments from me on the whole ranking board.
That’s why I make sure to enjoy the regular season because the playoffs are only a week and a half for us.
as a leafs fan, the only thing im worried about is vasilevski. I just dont see any way we win that series
I agree with you on Chicago. You're right about What To Do Next Year and That Lankenin has played much better since Fleury was Traded
The wild 4 game road trip
They go 2-1-1
Beating Columbus
And Washington not a bad week
@@dennybarlau8065 I'll say exactly what I said last week. They are not a dominant team and that's what keeps them in the 2nd row. They do not dominate teams to win, they have to grind to the very end to ensure a W. Every top row team besides the oilers dominates.
@@chanses7576 the problem with your thinking . the wild have a loseing record

The wild will play st Louis in the first round and Colorado for the championship
So, starting next week, do we get Owen Power thumbnails for the power rankings?
Nothing better than Sunday morning couch surfing watching the power rankings
Calgary probably should have been ahead of Boston. 4 wins in a row on the road isn't easy no matter who you are playing.
Yes the Flames won 4 in a row but that was against Kings, Sharks, Ducks and Kraken. 1 of those teams is in the playoffs. That why Flames move up 1
They are 6th stop complaining

We have a lot of Eastern teams clinching today. Can’t wait to see which West teams besides Colorado will clinch soon.
Calling my bookie...the Kings are a virtual lock 🔐! 🤣
I hope you’re right.

Hi Shannon, thanks for the fun video as usual. I'm wondering what you think of the idea of "Playoff teams" or "Regular Season teams"? I think the Atlantic has a pretty interesting situation with that
Avs are still winning without Landy and Kadri. Also you calling out how good Kuemper is... appreciated, Kuemper isn't getting the love he deserves.
As an Oilers fan I'll be having Kuemper nightmares!
@@blackenedmagic888 Then the result of the week would speak for itself. Why rank?

I went into the future and one of these teams won the Stanley cup 2022. I'm not kidding.
Mind. Blown. 🤯
Arizona could be one of those 👀
Great content as always. Thank you Sir
Wake up babe new thg power rankings drop
Are you doing the wrap up with my idea of who moved the most over the season and whom didn’t?
Luv the power ranking wodden puck board. Nice treat.
Some takeaways from this week:
Rangers look dangerous now, they could make a deep run. Please don't hang out Shesrerkin to dry in the playoffs.
Carolinas play has concerned me much like you, the way things have been I wouldn't be shocked if they're bounced round 1
As a Habs fan, it pains me to say Toronto looks dangerous now and can finally win a round.
This year could be the year they do. Leafs unofficial motto since 68..... I do wish this team some success though they have a good team.
The Leafs are poised to run the table of their next 10 games ✅

Isles need to move down 2 or 3 spots in the NHL standings. Right now we have no chance at the draft lottery with the new rules, we need to be 11th or 12th if we want a chance at the lottery.
Dallas losing to NJ was devastating for a fantasy team with Oetinger, in the playoffs.
Love the puck set.
The same rankings that have the devils at 15 and the rangers at 20
“Hey guy-who-literally-probably-watches-more-NHL-hockey-than-any-other-person-on-Earth, let me tell you why your personal opinions are wrong…”
These power rankings are about the league in general.
They’re a relative comparison of the 32 teams.
It’s not a deep-dive into any one team.
Great video as usual, you never disappoint!
Thank you for these videos!
What do you think of Zdeno Chara's hit? For me, he is so incredibly, strong, he didn't mean to fling Jordan Kyrou that hard into the boards.
Waiting for all the "You're biased for Toronto because you said they generate revenue for you" comments
Well it’s a little true he wants them too do good so he can make more videos about them I see it on the business side but I also see how other hockey fans might think it’s little bias that’s why Shannon try’s not to make so many videos but the same time he admits if he can make a Toronto video he will
I really like this set of pucks. Very clean
@@omny6686 Buffalo beat Toronto everytime this year, as they always do every year. Toronto can never farm off Buffalo 😂 but we gave Carolina and Florida a run for their money everytime and inched closer and closer to beating them every time
@@ryans413 I'm happy that Vegas is fighting for their lives, Eichel doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs and I want one more "F YOU!" to him by Buffalo making the playoffs before him so I can hear more rattled commentary from him 😂
Man this sucks, Kraken are going to win just enough games out of a good draft spot
Forgot it was power rankings night lol. Popped hard when I saw the video in my subscriptions lol. Canucks won three straight, let’s see where they are this week.
Shesterkin for MVP! Has to be!
Let’s go AVS! 💙❤️
Of course he has to prove it in the playoffs....but Kuemper keeps making the haters look ridiculous....AND HOW BOUT THEM DU PIONEERS...9 time National Champs! And to beat a team from Minnesota makes it just a bit more sweet!
I don’t hate him
@@ryans413 I didn't think I named anyone personally.
But anybody who brings up this year,is just unwittingly making the point,of those of us who believe he will be an upgrade on Grubbauer,& more than good enough for a deep run. But so many fools are arguing he's sucked this season,& that just makes them look like complete idiots-cuz the exact opposite is true..I don't know if you are 1 of them.
San Jose loses six straight, so naturally they go up. I know you explained it’s because Montreal fell, but still…
It would be kinda of nifty to see a power ranking after the final regular season one is completed, that’s just ranking based on the average position throughout the entire season and see how the two list compare.
Quite sure he said before that it is something he will do. So let's just wait and see.
I think "players who could be in different jerseys next year" would be an interesting concept for a video regardless
as a devils fan, is it bad that I would have been ok with 32nd lmao
You know, with SportsNet partnering content creators, can we get a petition going to have Shannon as a hockey analyst? Like, the next Bob McKenzie imo, just with a nice splash of sarcasm and dry humor lol
Hey TORONTO fans.... its not windy in Buffalo but the leafs still blow! We're gonna be a real problm soon so keep your heads up. Tbh though i secretly hope they win it this year but the Sabres are finally on the right track
Sabres lost Eichel and many more Stars left. They can’t compete in the Atlantic. Power will request a trade in a few seasons or just walk.
