FIRST TIME WATCHING THE SHINING (REACTION)
In this video, I react to the classic horror movie: The Shining. This film follows Jack Torrance as he becomes the winter caretaker for an isolated hotel and he moves in with his wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny. As the days progress, Danny's visions get worse and Jack becomes insane.

Jack has the shining, but Danny really, really has it. The hotel is using the shining to get Jack to kill Danny so that his shining can be absorbed into the hotel. As Jack falls deeper towards the evil deed, the hotel begins shining brighter - bright enough for Wendy to begin seeing it, too.
Tony is, of course, Danny's protector. When Jack goes all in on getting to chopping, Tony kicks it into overdrive by taking over Danny in order to wake up Wendy, give her a weapon, and get them tf out.
Interesting observation
This is one of the most concise explanations. Well done.
Yup. The Hotel "looked" at Jack and decided that he was the weak link to get to Danny.
This movie was amazing. Loved watching it! Very original thought.
When Wendy talks with the doctor, after Dannys incident with Tony, it feels like an interview that could be picked straight from a documentary or something. It’s so realistic and natural..
5:39 "That's odd. Usually the blood gets off at the second floor."
25:58 "Come, family. Sit in the snow with daddy and let us all bask in TV's warm glowing warming glow."
You're confused. Those quotes are from "The Shinning".
@@robertcartwright4374careful.. do you want to get sued?
No tv and no beer make Homer something something.
@@codyporter8599 That's "Hedley!"
the seamonkeys i've ordered have finally arrived! lol look at them cavort and caper!
A true masterpiece of a book and a movie. I've never been so startled by a day of the week before. I mean one second you're just watching a movie and trying to keep up, then all of a sudden out of nowhere... TUESDAY!! 😱
My favorite part of this reaction:
Jack: I'm not gonna hurt ya... I'm just gonna bash your brains in.
Yasmina: I feel like that would hurt.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Yasmina, you said you don't do scary movies, yet here we are watching "The Shining." Only two movies have given me nightmares, this one and "The Exorcist."
The moral of this and many horror stories: don't mess with Indian Burial grounds
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 exactly
3:00 Stephen King was staying at the Stanley Hotel in suite 217. He and his wife stayed there on vacation at the end of the season when no one else was staying in the hotel, and the staff were getting the hotel ready to close.
For the film, the hotel exterior is the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood, Oregon.
Although the interior shots were done on sets, those sets were inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite.
I heard King said he used to be an alcoholic.
He would sit and write and drink and write and drink.
One day his kid spilled on a week's work.
Jack is King at that moment.
There is a documentary (Room 237) that ranges from pointing out interesting things to covering some of the VERY fringe theories about the film.
Oddly enough, Jack Nicholson never appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, or any other late-night talk show for that matter. He rarely did television interviews at all. The last sit-down talk show he did was an episode of "The Mike Douglas Show" in 1976. This is from Jack's IMDb "Self" page. If anyone knows of any other sit-down, mainstream, terrestrial TV interviews let IMDb know.
Jack Torrance having memorized the layout of the labyrinth would have been a GREAT plot point! Luckily, Danny got to get away safely.
In the original novel, there was no maze. There were, however, hedge sculptures in the shape of wile animals, like bears and giant wolves. And they were kind of like the Weeping Angels in Dr. Who. You really dídn't want to turn your back on them... or even take your eyes off them. (shudder).
Given your intelligence, you would love Kubrick's first movie "Dr. Strangelove" a satire about the USA/Soviet Union cold war and Nuclear War tension. Possibly the smartest farce I've ever seen.
Agreed.
Kubrick made several movies in the 1950s before 1964’s Dr. Strangelove. It’s worth going back and checking those too.
@@paulwolffart1251 Thanks. I was kind of winging it when I said it was his first. I knew it was an early one.
The Shining is different from so many other horror films, because it’s not about the threat of violence, it’s a *promise* of violence.
it's unsettling,
like the music, weird carpet, Tony...
That's a great way to put it
You need to follow up with Doctor Sleep. It's the sequel to this
Theres a huge reference to the Shining in Ready Player One, makes the viewing experience better.
5:39 I love the way Kubrick did this.
Every once in awhile I have a dream/nightmare of the 2 girls standing at the end of the hall. I first saw this as a kid at the theater when it came out.
??? we don't see 2 girls.
do YOU see 2 girls...? 😐
@@Gravydog316 Not sure what you're asking or even talking about.
“Some places are like people-some shine and some don’t.”
-Dick Halloran
That’s why Jack and Wendy could see visions towards the end. The Overlook held so much evil that the hotel itself had the power to “shine”.
This is my favorite movie of all time.
I love that you either pause or stop talking the way you do. So many reactors miss a TON because they just can't shut up while stuff is going on in the movie.
Kubrick does a good job slowly building tension (music). Really more about the evil within than about ghosts. Types of physiological abuse is a very real thing that's what makes it more impactful. Of course the acting is great.
I could watch people reacting to the guy in the dog costume going down on the guy in the bed every day 😂 it’s just such a random scene that shocks and confuses everyone. It was explained in the book but not in the movie.
9:31 - "This whole place is such an enormous maze..." Like, an enormous HEDGE maze perhaps...
I still remember when I watched the movie and since it wasn't scary I felt very brave and bought the book. Dear God, I couldn't read that book at night or when I was alone. Yet, I love the book so much.
Mr. Halloran explains the whole thing to Danny over the ice cream. His Grandmother had it, so it's hereditary. Most people who have it either don't realize it, or don't believe it. That's the father, Jack. Danny describes it like dreaming. You wake up, but you don't remember all of it. That's Jack not remembering the woman in room 237. And some places shine like people. That's the hotel.
The hotel has a consciousness and it wants murders to feed its evil. It talked Delbert Grady into doing it, and it was seducing Jack, through alcohol courtesy Lloyd the bartender, into murdering Danny and Wendy. It used Grady to propose the idea to Jack, and to make him subservient, like he needed to do it as a matter of pride.
Also, the reason Jack typed "All work and no play..." over and over again was because he wasn't really there. He was shining, experiencing who knows what in another plane of existence. He probably actually was watching Danny and Wendy in the maze through the model. And the reason why Wendy could see things at the end was because the hotel was energized by the death of Dick Halloran.
One side note: A symbol for the human psyche is a labyrinth, represented by both the hedge maze and the corridors of the hotel. I'm sure Kubrick was quite aware of that.
If you watch the sequel with Ewan McGregor playing an older Danny, it fills in a lot of questions pertaining to this movie and makes you appreciate the original even more so imho.
The name "The Shining" was inspired by the John Lennon song, "Instant Karma"- "And we all shine on"
Check out the movies Misery(1990), Hereditary(2018), Halloween(1978), Halloween ll(1981), The Lost Boys(1987), The Blair Witch Project(1999), Friday The 13TH(1980), and The Thing(1982).
Here's Johnny was, itself, a reference to the Johnny Carson show.
A tv interview program
hilarious that the Tony bit is the least creepy part
18:38 In 2023, the Stanley Hotel had a Shining-themed Halloween ball. Unfortunately, it looks like they're not doing it for 2024.
Something tells me that this isn't the first time you're seeing this movie. You "predicted" what was going to be said or happen a little too often.
The girls in the story Mr Ullman tells Jack were 8 and 10. The girls in the story Jack writes were twins.
Great reaction to Kubrick's take on horror. I'd love to see you react to his other movies about the future, the past, war, love, and everything else.
RIP Shelley Duvall (1949 - 2024.07.11) 🙏
18:25 - I mean, some people DO think that children are possessed...so I suppose calling Jack a child isn't altogether off-base. lol
1:13 I like that the green has those lines.
7:36 Lol... Go sit in the corner! :)
12:24 The Tuesday always gets the reactors. 15:04 Also the Wednesday. :D
20:18 Peace, love, tranquillity and good will.
One of the great horror movies ever made, by the greatest director of all time, Stanley Kubrick. I’m not even a horror film fan but this one is a classic. Scary stuff. Also highly recommend a Japanese horror film called “Cure”. Very unsettling and atmospheric!
No one ever notices when they say that the hotel was built on a indian burial ground
You should react to "Doctor Sleep". It's the sequel to The Shining and it's a great movie on it's own.
The only thing I don’t like about the movie, compared to the novel, is the lack of a build to Jack’s madness/possession. In most of the book, he’s fairly normal, we learn about his struggles with alcohol, how it wrecked him to accidentally hurt Danny. He’s a very sympathetic character. The movie makes him seem crazy and other from the start.
Curious if you noticed how the bathroom in The Shining is the same as the one in episode 1 of NBC Hannibal, and how the bathroom in room 237 is the same as episode 7 since you're a Hannibal fan.
"I just want peace, love, and happiness" she says, watching a horror movie.
Ngl i always laugh when everyone jumps at Wednesday 🤣 and the fact someone was paid to type out all them pages ha ha such a classic for so many reasons . Stil prefer the book but even the wide lense shots n music was good casting was crazy. Feel really bad for how Shelly was treated in order to get this amazing preformance bless her what a G. Thnx for the reaction always fun to see people interpretations at the end 😇
Now you must react to Doctor Sleep. The recent sequal with grown up Danny. The book was great, & the movie mostly matched it.
Dis gone be good like the Hannibal reactions
24:04 here's Johnny!
If you liked the Shining you should give Dr. Sleep a watch. It's a modern sequel to the shining and it's actually really good/creepy.
At 14.24 - where is the Electrical socket and cable for the TV set.
You should watch The Thing (1982). It is easily the most suspenseful/paranoid movie of all time. Some actually rate it the best MOVIE 🎬 of all time. Easily the best special effects of all time....practical effects.🙂
Think you should react to Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the Shinning.
love and blessings!
The context of the bear thru the whole movie is some diddy drake stuff.
I wonder if it was the first reference to furry shit ever?
Ever seen Eyes Wide Shut? Also a Kubrick film. That stuff is wayyyyyy older than even diddy or drakes parents
@@_BangDroid_ I've never seen it but my mom brought my brother to see it in the theater and they had no idea what they were in for rofl. I'm glad I wasn't there.
I don't know what your exposure to Breaking Bad is, but if you are interested in reacting to the series, I would be in for following your journey into that world. It is an absolute amazing television series. I loved your reaction to this film. Kubrick is an absolute legend Full Metal Jacket is also a Kubrick masterpiece.
Loved the reaction!
You should check out Doctor Sleep. It's an excellent sequel to this one.
Not my fav Kubrick but its a cult classic indeed. Now you have to watch Doctor Sleep. The great sequel from 2019.
One thing I've learned from reactors in this film is that they're all scared of Tuesday.
22:36 No comment.
Inprisoned for month in a horror hotel and she is worried about food variety 😂
Great reaction! You really need to also react to the sequel, Doctor Sleep. It's amazing. I might like it even more than The Shining.
Japanese horror classic "Cure" is my first foreign horror film. I loved it. It's on Criterion Collection streaming. Humans kill people while doing normal everyday things and don't know why they did it, but they are aware and admit when caught. Watch as the mystery unfolds.
Now you have to watch The Chickening.
If want just more of this juicy story watch Dr. Sleep made much more recently. Its about the second book.
Rip Shelly Duvall.
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊

One Dark Night (1982)
Gay bear pig is the real horror of this movie.
After watching it, your editing is kind of like a second watch. Did you notice the books in background? The bear on Danny's shirt? Then the bear giving head? There's so many hidden genius clues to what's going on. Did you notice when Wendy talks to Jack at the hotel and he yells at her that his hair is back to normal after yelling at her after he messed it up while yelling? His hair is normal and he's looking at her like she's crazy because that whole conversation happened in her head. In reality, he's writing, and she walks up and just stands there while he says nothing and never messes up his hair. The conversation never happened. During that same scene look at the chairs in the background. Sometimes they are missing. They are not a continuity issue. They are clues as to when the movie is real and when it's in Wendy's head.
U should check out Doctor Sleep it's a really good sequel !
I always get thoroughly aggravated by people calling the little girls in this movie "The Twins". In the book and even in the damned movie they were established as being 8 and 10 years old. I don't get pissed off too easily, but that has always got to me. Pay attention, people, please!
Poor Shelley Duvall
I originally found it kinda boring but have grown to appreciate it
Not super important, but the name "Wendy" was made up for the book Peter Pan by the author.
Nightmare on elm street 1984.
Elevated Horror before it was a recognized subgenre. Pioneer? Can't overlook "Begotten". It came before and no mainstream audience will understand it
Hell, I don't even understand it. Except that it's about god and hell? I think.
We need a sequel to this movie. The perfect actor to play Jack Torrance would be Jeff Blim of Team Starkid. And in fact, a first draft of the sequel has already been made: ua-cam.com/video/SXwOGdHDimw/v-deo.html
id go crazy if i had to live around wendy's snot rags all over the place too.. and that constant snorting day and night.. pubes all over the toilet, its disgusting
I assume you don't know what "Here's Johnny" means. It's from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 1962-1992
ua-cam.com/video/WZKmsA8bzao/v-deo.html
It is a good movie. The book, as usual, is better.
No
Lots of controversy about this one because of the director being very cruel to the cast and crew. I still think the book is much better. Great reaction. You have to watch The Exorcist for Halloween if you haven't already.
I am gay 🎉🎉🎉
16:10 Stanley Kubrick was a perfectionist to such an extent that he drove others crazy. Shelly Duvall (Wendy) had a mental breakdown filming the Shining.
Considering his perfectionism, it's a safe bet that the 5 months/6 months discrepancy was intentional.
Yeah, Hallorann dying was one of the reasons King famously didn't like this adaptation (to me it's just kinda dumb because there's so much build-up to him getting to the hotel and he then barely gets through the door before being killed - his sole meaningful contribution is basically "a vehicle") and in the later (IMO not good) TV adaptation, where King had more control, he also survives.
Fun fact: Kubrick, renowned for multiple takes, made Scatman Crothers redo the scene where Hallorann explains the Shining to Danny nearly _150 times_ !? When he got to the end he apparently burst into tears and personally I think it's great testament to his character that he didn't turn around and punch Stanley Kubrick in the face just as hard as he could then walk off the production.
I can do without the QVC commercial as your sponsor. 👎 📹 Your reaction video for "The Shining" better be worth the hassle of your selling spiel ., or perhaps , you need to be "corrected" 😆 LOL
It's been decided, your editing skills for this video were very poor.
I stopped watching right when Jack woke up screaming.
Now you need to see the next movie Dr.Sleep. Danny is now an adult dealing with his own demons and supernatural forces. It really good.
This movie was amazing. Loved watching it! Very original thought. #rosethehat
Dr Sleep is a very good movie/book on its own but as a sequel to The Shining it slmost feels like a parody, like a joke that got out of hand znd went too far. Its as if Stephen King got so fed up by being asked to do a sequel thst he came up with the silliest thing he could imagine snd told the public "here's the sequel now leave me alone FO".
Please dont. That is like recommending Mask 2: Son of Mask after she watched the Mask. This movie is only a classic because of Kubrick
Just an observation, how many younger reactors (not sure if it applies to Yasmina) don't appear to have ever heard the phrase "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" before.
more surprised by how many younger reactors have no idea how a type writer works so they're very confused about the scene when Wendy finds his papers
"Here's Johnny' was universally known expression as it was the iconic intro for Johnny Carson every night on the tonight show for 30? years.
This movie was amazing. Loved watching it! Very original thought.
My favorite horror movie of all time. The book is good too, though it's completely different (small wonder Stephen King hates the movie).
Stephen King said he hated this movie but absolutely loved doctor sleep
He hated it at the time, but he's come around on it in recent years. Even though it changes a lot from the book, he admits now that it's still a strong horror movie in its own right.
Ah, yes, the feel good movie of the month!
Love this movie, great atmosphere, memorable dialogue and all the leads are amazing.
P.S. You look amazing in green.
Chill bro that’s my gf
I like to think Nicholson got casted for Joker because of "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Also starring the Penguin Danny Devito, Doc from Back to the Future, The actor who's the voice of Chucky, the villain from "Hills have Eyes, all stuck in a mental ward in the 60's.
We're 20 minutes in and I've stopped the vid 20 times. I know, it's a reaction but I just can't. Good luck.
How cute are u ??? Nice
Now you go back and realize how many nods to this movie are in Supernatural
At this point I'm glad you've missed out on all these classic movies. Makes watching these reactions from a first time watcher so rewarding.
This movie was amazing. Loved watching it! Very original thought.
I totally agree. I've watched The Shining maybe twenty times in my life. Probably more. I do enjoy watching the reactions of someone who's never seen it. And commenting on things I've never thought about.
The analysis is great, but it works better at the end of the movie. Too many interruptions are a bit jarring.
Yeah, it's hard to imagine being immersed.
Synthesizer GOD Wendy Carlos did the score for this movie and Tron
@22:40 Not a single "that's what she said" in the comments? Disappointing.
I learned about cannibalism from Silence of the Lambs. React to that movie.
I reacted to it back in November!
U should watch doctor sleep it's a sequel to the shining
I asked my dad to watch this movie with me he asked if i was sure and after saying yes we sat and watched it with him telling me to cover my eyes during the nude lady scene so i wouldnt get grossed out by the effects this movie holds a special place in my heart and ik my dad was really happy that i was willing to watch his favorite Stephen king movie
