Great review Trev! I love this tent, I think this is the most versatile tent for not too extreme conditions, with the best value for money. it's freestanding and weights just over 1 kg! unfortunately, condensation is unavoidable, as it is a single-wall tent (more "1 and a half" wall). There are only 2 things that make me mad every time I think about them, because those could be solved with a minimum of effort: the second zipper's lenght and A DARKER COLOR OPTION (dark green would be the best)!!! Since the release of the first version I see hundreds of people asking for these two things, but in so many years Naturehike have never been considered them. In my opinion, those would be very minimal changes (especially as regards the color), so I can't understand why they haven't already made them. Please, if you hear them again, ask for these two things! Let them at least explain why they are not doing them and if they intend to introduce new darker colors in the future!?
Seems like they may have more than a couple of versions of this tent. I have one that has ‘snow skirts’ but doesn’t have the little interior pocket. The top vents on mine are like the ones on the ‘upgraded’ version they sent you in that you can only open and close them from the outside. I predominately hammock camp, but on the rare occasions I can’t hang, this tent always comes with me. Love it!
Love my Vik 1 too!! So easy to use in all aspects from room to setup and tear down. No condensation issues for me yet. To increase venting in good weather i use the rear vestibule guyout string and loop it onto the cross pole up top. Fully opens that space. Just bought a Nemo Dragonfly 1 Bikepack tent, compared the two and wonder why I bothered buying the Nemo tent. The Vik is just that good!!
Mind if I ask what area of the world/type of biome you are camping in? I really like this tent and it ticks all of my boxes, but the mountains of Georgia (U.S.) are pretty humid.
that flap on the vents was in response to water blowing back into the tent through that vent area and the vent support arms were a funky design that never really worked so they fixed it ….the rotating pole connectors are a welcome addition .Some folks ask for different colors but that doubtful as white / light color tents form less condensation on the inside. I read this in a tent test report online so it must be true 😂 … Great review Trev … those changes are making me think this could be my next tent purchase …. 😆 atb Dave Mc
It's a good tent, and those subtle changes may make a lot if difference. It git me through two Lake district camps over the past few weeks. I really enjoy it
the idea behind the zip from thetop is you can open it slightly in drier weather to provide additional ventilation, condensation is the only real issue I've found with this tent.
Yea not any colour options with this one. I know many like the stealthily colours but it's never been an issue to me. As long as you're tucked out the way, setting up late and leaving early it doesn't make a lot of odds.
Wild camping is fabulous Julie....who you do it with is soooo important though ! It's one to tick off the bucket list, you never know you might get hooked like me !😁
Hey ! I really enjoy watching you review ! You've done a nice review (thank a lot to point at this: the cross pole goes over the structure! ) Liked your energy and your lovely accent :3 Have a nice day keep going !
I agree about the needless double zipper in the entry. I wish they would make the inner mesh door a double zipper instead instead of having to reach all way up & down is annoying and also the other side the little zipper vestibule cover they should put a zipper so that you can open up that side as well for great ventilation during the warmer stretches. I love the ease of set up and the no mesh ceiling that keeps the dew off my stuff sleeping I don’t need to look @ stars I just wanna sleep.
I have used this tent pretty extensively. Pros: weight, use of use, condensation is manageable, price. Cons: Not waterproof in rainy windy day (mostly because of the top ventilation). Also one top pole broke. I am using the older model tho. I wonder how much of a difference the ventilation modifications make.
You should have gone for the VIK-2, I love mine. Enough room to keep wet stuff away from your sleep system, and 2 full doors. Also has more venting. That being said, my VIK-1 is bullet proof, and has always kept me dry.
@@SummitOrNothing When I got my VIK-1, it was right after the upgrade. I asked them what happened to being able to open the top vents from the inside, and they said they had issues with water running down the rods, and coming in the holes. That and the new pole hooks were pretty much the "upgrade".
Just used this the first time on the foot hills of Nevis, was really happy with it and the size for a one man isn't bad. I haven't seen what's it's like with bad rain yet though.
Great review mate. I’ve watched a couple of your Vik 1 videos and I’m keen on buying this now. I’m doing a multi-day hike up Mulhacén in Sierra Nevada, Spain in July, but I’m concerned that this will end up with bad condensation issues!
I don't know if you watch "the outdoor gear review" guy from America who slated my Naturehike backpack saying it was the worst in the world (perfectly good pack by the way) He then reviewed the Vik 1 and said that a bin bag would be a better tent. I made a point of calling him a twat 😂👍
I saw both reviews as well, I don’t have the backpack but I know someone that does and they love it. I really love my VIk 1, I had one, sold it to buddy, then realized that was dumb and bought a replacement!
I'm curious why you consider it a fair weather tent. It seems like it would handle the wind good, the exoskeleton lets it sit lower than usual. Maybe you feel that way due to the condensation threat or its single wall?
Only because I took it out of season last year and it was proper cold. I'm sure it can handle a certain amount of wind and rain, but if I knew conditions could deteriorate then I'd probably pack a different tent first.
What i think coud be a problem with the exo skeletton, is that in heavy wind the pressure on the connection between the tent body and the poles is pretty high. Maybe they could rip off in extreme conditions.
Yea, as I said, I wouldn't consider this tent an all conditions tent. If you want something storm proof, definitely look elsewhere, but if you want something fun and lightweight and you know the conditions aren't going to be too extreme, then this I a great option.
That's a good point, I imagine it would be harder on the fabric connection points. I would like to add two things in the exo skeletons possible favour (I'm no engineer). Being under the poles it sits shorter and would be that much less of a sail and would let the wind go over it easier. Also you can tie off the poles directly with the guy ropes which should help it from buckling in. Just some thoughts, I'd be interested to see a wind test.
I'd love to try the Naturehike "Lgloo" (I have a feeling that isn't 'lgloo' the way they spell it on the website!) but that is an absolute monster. I think they market it for like Himalayan basecamp tent but the profile seems a bit too large for big mountain trips, would work better on moors. It looks like a yellow ship or something. Never been able to see inside it!
Hi. Love the channel. Big fan. If you have a mo I have a teaser for you. Can you buy a 1-2 person backpacking tent that's. A. 3 season. B. Goes up with the inner and outer simultaneously. C. Is under 2kg D. Under £100 and E. Is not total crap???
