I cuss because something that is bad enough happened to me to have to express my frustration trough cussing. For example someone wronged me violently, steeling, spreading lies, killing my loved, emotional abuse and so forth resulting in being angry and needing to cuss because I didn't release the energy by communicating to the person. Because when someone wronged you bad enough you should release the energy back at him so he can stop messing with you or doing that very bad behavior again towards others. People today mix it with other situations that are not in danger to them and cuss all the time...Maybe because you have a bitter view of life? I dont cuss if theres no sun outside, I just know its what is normal, while other categorize it as something wronged to them and they cuss? Or people that cuss at something that reminds them of someone that put them in danger. I feel I dont cuss unless its serious enough.

What it really is is a higher sign of intellect. People who swear more get both sides of their brain going at the same time so they are more open to ideas and feelings as opposed to using one side of the brain at a time .. it also shows a higher understanding of vocabulary. People who don’t cuss will never admit this and try to say it’s a low form of iq or that they are defensive when really it’s just a higher form of intellect

This makes sense in regards to why people with high levels of stress tend to swear more. When something threatens you in a predatory way it causes that stress reaction and thus the expletive. So those who don't handle stress well and swear often (type A people) are in a constant state of defensive maneuvers in their life. Anyone agree or disagree?

I have recently been thinking that using a “swear word” when something goes wrong (different from cursing someone or at someone, because it’s not about something someone did to me) is an expression of my fruitless will to make the thing not have happened. I can’t, of course. Swearing about an over-cooked sausage in the pan isn’t going to un-cook it any. But my impotent wish to make it so can only be expressed as a cuss word. There’s no other outlet for that stress energy, because there’s no way to correct the mishap.
This is different from having been (allegedly) wronged by another person, which is what Peterson was talking about here.

Even more fundamental, a curse is reserved for someone who, in your view, is breaking your set of rules. Someone preying upon you of course breaks your rules, but sometimes the predator is the one that curses. They curse when you resist being their prey. You are breaking their rules and self-centered desires. Even a good person will curse when they view the wicked in action. So cursing is one of the impulsive reactions to a pulse of stress caused by someone or something or some event that is breaking your rules (not necessarily predatory).

We're simply putting the person being cursed into an ancient frame, as old as mankind. We're also using to emphasize the importance of whatever we're talking about. @@jpPID Just me, but I never swear. It's like imagine a business setting (I'm an HR major), I couldn't see an executive using language in that setting like a meeting (especially among strangers). In formal more professional settings when there is some sort of code or adherence to a sort of unspoken rule, I do not think people curse in certain settings. You have to be in the right situation to curse. Sometimes you do not curse to be respectful. I do not think it's a lack of vocabulary. People just do it because culture and sometimes they can't FIND the word to say at that moment, but that doesn't mean they do not have the vocabulary. Other times, people curse in a filthy way that makes me lose respect for some people. For me, cursing would be an intrusion on my self image. It's my problem, not anyone else's. For others, cursing is a way to connect, convey emotions, and react to certain things. It's not like if you do curse you're lesser, or if you don't, you're more.

As someone with tic disorder very similar to Tourettes Syndrome, I just want to add a correction here: not all people with TS swear due to their tics.
This is a symptom of TS called coprolalia which causes people with TS to swear. It's actually rare to find someone with TS and copelalia usually tics present as simple vocal tics (eg. humming/clearing throat/saying or yelling words or phrases that aren't necessarily swears) or simple/motor tics.
Notably, coprolalia isn't always associated with TS either. It's a rare symptom of other neurological disorders as well, such as OCD and dementia (although this is rare). Or it can occur after injury to the brain from a stroke, seizures, etc.

This makes so much sense, people usually curse even when something (not only someone) is in their way, opposing them, impeding them.
Things that are inconvenient to you are your enemy (like getting hurt or having a plan ruined) so the natural reaction would be to use words that alert those around you that you're suffering from an inconvenience, or are opposed by something.
This totally changed the way i look at swear words.
Also it made me think, that's probably why swear words are so funny. Because laughter is a natural response for misfortune, so it's like we're mentally programmed to find swear words funny. It's so hard wired into our minds that people can swear casually and people will laugh because their brain goes [swear word means danger which means it's time to laugh] and they laugh.
Maybe it's also why swearing casually is frowned upon because the peoples brains around you are going [alerting us to danger when there's no danger? that's detrimental for our survival! how rude!]
anyway if you read all the way down here through my ramblings, then congrats, and thank you for reading!

I think its more about harming the reputation of a person in the society, short term or long, widespread or limited, by associating such actions or things which are considered as degraded behavior, and every person you come into contact with has an opinion about you. Cursing is a revengeful action , because that person thinks that you have harmed him in someway so he must retaliate.
The more famous you are more you are exposed to the risk of curses/insults. Every trusted contact (might be Friends, relatives, coworkers, neighbors ) is an asset in many ways and we benefit from them.
So the purpose may be to make you lose as many contacts or trusted people as possible. If one can't harm outside the domain of his mind then one may try to devalue the person in imagination by cursing as a symbol of not giving a good place in society.
But Why do many teenagers curse their parents??? may be because they don't want to be a contact of that person who constantly tries to influence their decisions and ways of life and consider them as a threat to their freedom.

    • @buckosgold3361
      @buckosgold3361 6 років тому +1

First of all, I think your comment is very intriguing. I have a few questions. Do you mean that the act of swearing is about harming the reputation of ANOTHER person in the society? Or do you mean that the one who is swearing is doing it to harm his own reputation in society?
Could you please rephrase this: "I think its more about harming the reputation of a person in the society, short term or long, widespread or limited, by associating such actions or things which are considered as degraded behavior, and every person you come into contact with has an opinion about you. "
Because I believe that cursing is indeed a way to cut ties.

Well, this is the flaw of all theories that Peterson proposes for human behaviour. If our behaviour was determined by evolution there would be no moral freedom. Peterson is trapped into evolutionism. That is why he does not understand Genesis and primordial sin. He supposes that man could create a paradise and this belief leads to the same hell as those Communist beliefs he is criticising. He is accepted only because He shares many fundamental errors of the present. Yet he is honest enough to see and to criticise their outcomings.
