- One of the most forbidding places in Oregon is a remote, steep forest near the south coast. If you’re up for a grueling adventure, you’ll find an amazing reward: a waterfall called "The Devil’s Staircase." Enjoy this wild excursion from the Field Guide archives.

WOW - I wish I was SEVERAL years younger - I would surely like to make the journey there!!
You could be. It’s promised. Job 33: 25
Thanks MUCH for filming the hike in and out. Loved watching!
looks primordial!
Nice! Gonna attempt this soon.
Made it! Gonna upload a video in a week or two
@@MattCookOregon I watch them both and they are great!!
@@ManasesRamos My man
Have you gone?
Just gotta know the "easy" way... right? lol@@MattCookOregon
So glad there r still places the average person cannot get to. The minute a road goes in the area is destroyed. I saw that happen to Wrights Lk in the CA Sierra.
Wow!...what a great hike!
We must preserve these last pieces of wilderness in Oregon
Gratitude
May Devil's Staircase always remain inaccessible to all but the very few. Its good to have places on this planet that are too hard for most people to get to. Not everything needs to be or should be accessible.
I've hiked the PCT, lived in the Himalayas, climbed the PNW volcanoes, and been the first white person in Indian desert tribes. The way you described the feeling of being in remote places literally brought tears to my eyes.
🤥
❤️KEEP IT WILD❤👵🏻
Thanks for sharing. Nice.
I live in Illinois about a hour away from a place called Starve Rock. It has great hiking and some pretty unique trails. My favorite was a place called Starve Louis canyon. At the end it has this AWESOME WATERFALL AND CAVES TO EXPLORE.
thats so crazy. because i grew up in vermont and it has so many waterfalls to explore too!
Been in there about 11 times since 2007... spent about 10 nights in there total. Originally we backpacked 4 miles down the creek till we found the trail the old timers used. And its not all about the falls, it's about the experience. Wassen Creek is epic from one end to the other.
I can't believe I've lived in Oregon nearly 55 years, my entire life, and I've never heard of this!
Seems like just about every point of interest is called "the devil's" something or other.
I’d love to do this 🤍
This video was only a 11/10 until I saw the magnificent waterfall shot at 7:18. Now it's a 15/10.
She seem witchy but knows where the shrooms are ha ha
Why is it called “The devils staircase “?
Mick David probably because it’s so hard to get there. You have to go “through Hell” to get there.
Thats not the devils staircase, its the staircase to heaven.
That name is reserved for the stairs leading to Wahtum Lake lol
I wonder where they went in from. I did the trek with a couple friends, and if I recall right, it took us about an hour and a half in, mostly straight down. Maybe 2 1/2 out.
I must say, after all the hype, I was rather underwhelmed by the spectacle (or lack thereof). Then again, like this video, we did it later in the year so water flow was pretty low. Still, the space itself doesn't measure up to the near mythical hype (IMO).
@@bokangleach it's the journey to a new place that is fun for me. Even if it isn't what I expected when I get there. I have only recently shifted to understand that. But I am glad I did. The experience of it all. Yea!
This hike is treacherous and would not recommend unless you are in good shape and mentally tough enough to push the limits. It's not worth it unless you start super early or you will get lost guaranteed at night.
I will also mention it is very dangerous the closer you get to the waterfalls.
What happens when you climb it,you get to hell.
I hate it that people just trample all over it.
Soon the natural beauty will diminish as the mosses and micro biology are disturbed. 😟
This right here is the reason so many natural treasures are becoming off limits for filming.
totally underwhelming once they get there lol
Its sad how the timber companies have destroyed the forest.
Not in Oregon!
Is usually wildfires cuz we're not allowed to properly manage our forests.
@@sadiewilson7053 old growth forests did not need to be managed.
@@forestdweller512 the entire state is old growth except the parts that burn to the ground every year!
Why are we buying timber from Canada when we have our own renewable natural resource in our very own back yard??!!
It's ridiculous af!
Unfortunate name for something so beautiful. I would have called it Angels Steps.
What is unfortunate about the word devil?
I would have called it Satan’s Cradle Is Wonderful Falls
The falls seemed like a disappointment to me. I will not be making that hike.
Kevin Streeter I'm pretty sure the waterfall is disappointed in you.
Here’s an idea: Tie bright orange plastic bows on branches every so often for people who are lost to be able to get out. 🧠 😊
Pollution
Seems awfully destructive.
Walking in the woods is awfully destructive?
Yep, we got a snow flake here
Good thing they didn’t get hurt scrambling through the tanglewoods before reaching their illusionist destination. Not worth the risk for all the hype.
finally enter into the remote natural space and they make a ton of obnoxious noise with high fives, etc. - classic. Humans are not my first choice.
They were not especially noisy. Even if they had all screamed in sync with each other, what actual harm would it have done? It seems like you were just looking for something to complain about.
Humans are so loud, says the guy that wants to operate a diesel-powered tree-felling machine.
Humans are your ONLY choice. Squirrels don't leave comments on UA-cam.
A virgin forest with clear-cuts. Interesting.
So, you guys had a little bit of a rough hike? Waddaya want, a cookie? It's supposed to be frickin' tough.
Lol that's it? I mean it sounds like a fun adventure, but seriously? All that bushwhacking just for that?
You do not get the point obviously going to a place that almost no one ever gets to
Last days warning....JESUS IS COMING! REPENT FROM SIN AND SEEK JESUS WHILE THERE IS TIME!
Why! you understand this is a hiking video right... people of religion really need to understand there's a right place in the right time and your message will resonate better...
Hail Satan
@Stephanie Logan I bet you think it would be easier if you knew whether it was true or not... It isn't... Imagine waking up one day to know that everything you thought was true was actually a lie. And knowing you could never convince anyone else of anything. Meh, I read Carl Sagan's "Demon Haunted World" when I was 15 and thought I was so ahead of the curve. It is a demon haunted world, but not in the sense that Carl Sagan was advocating. If you think the people you see on the street are real people, how easy it is to spread deceit by those masquerading online. It's like Norm McDonald once said, when the devil comes he doesn't look like the devil. But, he always sounds the same.
There is no Jesus, there is no god, there is no devil. If someone doesn’t believe they have that right, just like you have the right to spew your idiocy here.
There's always that one crazy bible thumper..
What was the mosquito population like? 🦟 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟 looks worth it. Springtime better, no doubt. 🌸 🍃 💦
