I’m with Simon on this. These clubs have 50+ professional players and know the schedule waaay in advance. It’s the managers choice, making the players play twice in 3 days, not the fixture schedule. They could have easily plan ahead and rotate.
Maybe we should offer each team a choice at the beginning of the year… like a Christmas bonus… you can revive an extra £3mil in TV money or have a longer break… which ones do you think the clubs will choose???!!

Yeah some of what you said is right but it’s not that simple. And clubs do not know months in advance as all but one of the competitions they play in are knockout ones, no one can predict who is gonna play and when it will be played.
And every aspect of being a player is far more intensified than it was 30 years ago. Physically, mentally, socially it’s much more difficult than it was back then even if they do get paid too much.

    • @rogersmith422

Spot on. If a player has played too many games and is facing burn out, its up to the manager to 'manage' and slot a squad player in.
I believe the players should be protected from a manager who would expect them to play every minute of every game by making a ruling that a player 'must' be rested after their 5th consecutive game (perhaps exclude semi's, finals and last game of season).

Let's be honest, they're doing it because they know they've f***ed it!! Man City just got top spot and usually when they get there they don't leave, that's why they're asking for time to regroup, ironically Liverpool just got what they wanted haha (and even then they'll complain they didn't get to batter Leeds but Chelsea & Man City were allowed to play vs them)

At many clubs, the players seemingly are allowed to get their manager fired just by having a quiet word with the chairman that "the gaffer's lost the dressing room".
Remember when Beckham joined Real Madrid? Next thing we knew, England had to play in Madrid's all-white kit.
Now you've got them whining that they don't want to play twice in three days. So don't! Just excuse yourself & the manager can pick someone else. Use your squad if the first 11 don't want to play.
The like of Jordan Henderson assume powers that they have no right to. He's the captain of Liverpool. The extent of his power is limited to his team-mates & even that is tempered by what Klopp allows. He's not a spokesperson for all players & certainly not for all fans.

Managers like Klopp with massive budgets and massive squads relative to the Norwichs etc of the world should be the last to complain. This is not about player welfare as Liverpool could easily rotate their squad, its more about teh top teams trying to increase their stranglehold on the league and sustain an uneven playing field. The holiday fixture list has existed for many a year and is part of the fabric of not only english football but also british culture.

I moved to Germany to become a coach and im amazed at how scientific they are with their young players on how much they are allowed to play how much they can train if they have a game with their school team they have to have 4 days in between before playing for their club.
If you look at the senior players and how injury resistant they are I believe it's down to this.

Exactly. At youth level, these kids are treated like horses or dogs, just run to exhaustion. It causes so many health problems later in life, compounded by the mental stresses of pressure from the professional game. Yes, they earn a lot if they make it to the top of the Prem table, but many/most don't get that far and are left with lasting physical and/or psychological damage.

Supply and demand. Not many people (most likely 0.0001%) can play elite level football whereas a far higher number once trained can work in the public sector. That’s an indisputable fact. There for a scarce resource like an elite level football will earn much more due to the lack of availability of people who could do his job to the same level. In addition, millions of people around the world consume football. Advertising revenue, merchandise etc. The market dictates the salaries whether you like it or not. So this is a non-argument.
