I started collecting when one of my favourite movies got taken off of Netflix a few years back, now got around 100 titles and steadily growing. It's great that you never have to worry about being unable to watch the stuff you want because its been taken off. Plus, you buy it once and you keep it forever rather than paying every month and losing it when you stop.
If you heard of the streaming service HBO Max, plenty of shows, movies and shorts were removed from there due to the fact that Warner Bros and Discovery merged, and it was all because of David Zaslav who is to blame, since then, I decided to get Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated Season 1 on DVD and will also be getting Season 2 on DVD as well, I am also thinking about getting physical media again since it's been a long while since I've been doing that
I think 4K blu-ray will be the last 'physical format'. Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray never went mainstream, majority of sales is still dvd. I don't get it, people want the latest 4K-TV to watch SD-content... No one seems to care, in real life there's only one person I know that is buying (4K) blu-ray. The rest never bought a blu-ray player, and stopped collecting movies the day their old dvd-player died and moved on to streaming.
I love the final destination series and i recently got the box set on DVD.I also love the underworld series and the Jason Bourne series. For me it’s always about the browsing and the collecting itself as well as the movies and I don’t think I’ll ever stop collecting.
Sometimes shows are not streamed in their original aspect ratio of 4:3 such as Seinfeld. This is not a problem with the DVDs. The theatrical cut of Amadeus has been replaced with the Director's Cut. An out-of-print DVD is needed to see it (or VHS). Sometimes music is replaced in shows and movies due to licensing. Physical media isn't dependent on internet. Blu-ray offers better video and audio quality.
@@CarlinCook I'll always love buying and collecting physical Media not just movies and TV shows but games and CDs as well I grew up with it and it's a form of art that needs to be preserved as long as possible
I’m finding that more and more of the films and tv series I want to watch are not on streaming services anymore, or same ones are added and removed every few months. You also have to worry if certain things are deemed problematic and blacklisted. Aside from HBOMAX, criterion and amazon prime movies pre 2010 (aside from the huge releases) can be somewhat hard to find on streaming. I wouldn’t tell people to panic buy, but if you love film, you should have a curated physical media collection.
Agreed. I really just want to have the movies I like most at my fingertips. No streaming service will curate a selection of horror films just for me. But I can do that for myself.
I cherish physical media and the memories it has. My crown jewel is my Godzilla, Ultraman and Gamera physical media collection. Some of the stuff is out of print even. I even got Bruce Campbell to sign my army of darkness vhs. It’s a collection of awesome memories that digital just can’t reproduce.
Your collection sounds amazing. I bet that VHS is glorious to behold. You also reminded me of how much I want to run through all of the Godzilla films and review them.
I agree 100%. Sometime's I HATE that I'm such a collector (books, cds, dvds, toys, horror merch, Yes.... I'M BROKE DAMN IT). But like you said MY collections bring me joy. When I organize everything and look at it it feels good.
Physical copies are good to have especially if it comes in a nice container. I have the first season of the 1960s Ultraman and Ultra Q in steelbook. If I had a disk for every film I own it would have over 800 disks and boxes. It would not be practical for me to have so many physical copies on hand. So I have over time digitized many of the films, especially the older films like the original 1954 Japanese version of Godzilla. I digitize not only the movie, but also the "bonus" sections. Knowing how to work with subtitles is a useful skill. I learned through digitizing how to remove the subtitles or add subtitles when I convert films to an .mp4 format. If you need subtitles for certain foreign films, there are many websites where you can find them.
Smart way to keep your collection without it physically getting out of control. I wasn't aware you could mess with the subtitles like that. Pretty cool.
I agree 100%, I had to buy my all-time favorite film on Blu-Ray. The "cloud" is not reliable, I do the same thing with comic books, I'll always prefer physical media for certain items.
I’m a year late on this. Lol. I agree 100% on buying movies that we love. My guilty pleasure dvd series is Sharknado. The DVD versions are a bit different than the ones streaming and I love the special features.
Sharknado is a fun time. I see people online complain about wanting to find a specific movie on streaming and I just think about how I don't have that problem.
I've dropped off collecting much physical media at times, but always out of a mixture of laziness and not wanting to spend the money. And it's always led to frustration. It amazes me that anyone could, as a pure choice, prefer watching movies exclusively through streaming. Unless you're the type of person who is a very casual movie watcher and doesn't mind being limited to whatever is on offer at a given time, or you're someone who rarely if ever rewatches anything once you've seen it, then the reasons for continuing to collect physical media become very apparent very quickly.
I do think most people who are fine with just streaming are definitely more casual film fans. The people really into it tend to want to own certain films.
Cool video, def food for thought. I haven't thought of collecting films, between my record collection, some funko pops and comics i dont have much room left. if i did i would def collect the more obscure stuff and tons of giallo
Totally agree with you. I even (still) buy VHS occasionally....just to own/preserve a specific hard-to-find title (inferior quality these tapes, but I don't care). By the way; love the Pinky Violence set in the background! :) Subbed!
Thanks for the sub. I greatly appreciate it. Also, you are the first person to comment on the Pinky Violence set. I've been doing this for years and thought someone would've commented on it by now. You're the first.
Dude, I'm a avid physical media fanatic, lol. I still buy CDs from my favorite Metal/Rock bands, I still own DVDs that I've purchased or were given to me as gifts, I continue to buy phyical copy video games for my PS4, I do NOT buy games digitally, never at all. And now recently I've purchased VHS tapes of Project A-Ko, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, & The Pagemaster because I loved those films so much & I only wanted to get them in VHS tapes because I LOVE the equality of nostalgic VHS films. I got a pretty rad DVD/VCR combo that my stepmother got me for my 27th Birthday & that is what made me want to buy VHS's & DVDs. Reason I stand with physical media is because streaming media is just flat-out mediocrity & laziness. Heck even half of the folks in the comment section voicing their resentment for streaming & digital media I strongly agree with! The absolute censorship & blacklists targeting on certain movies due to living in a generation of mentally unhinged crybabies with identity crisis is just ridiculous for me. I will continue to support physical media & I can care less of what these lame-ass haters think.
I love japanese cinema especially films from the 1940s and 50s. The only way i can see a lot of these films is on dvd. I hate streaming. I only have amazon prime because i order a lot of stuff from them.
I’m a little concerned that new players are no longer being introduced and manufacturers of players are dropping out of the market. How long until a quality 4K/Blu-ray player is hard to come by? They break down after a while. And while the current generation of game consoles have models with optical disc drives, there seems to be a push to go completely digital and the next generation of consoles may not play discs. It’s gotten to the point where I don't have to worry about friends borrowing films because they don’t even have a player. Hopefully, players will continue to be available for a long time, but I picked up a 4K player to have as a backup just in case.
Very good point here, and you’re right, it’s concerning. I bought an XBox Series X just because I wanted to make sure I had the version with a blu-ray player.
Both streaming and digital gaming are bad for preservation and the hobby as a whole. Theres a lot of instances with not being able to watch a certain movie on stream or have one completely vanish, not to mention the flood of streaming services that dosnt have the same library, so you'd have to fork out a sub to watch 1 damn movie while not giving a shit about the rest. In gaming examples can be found in the new GTA Trilogy and Warcraft 3 remake. The ogs have been removed from digital store and replaced with broken garbage. Screw digital and streaming to high heaven. Ill always buy physical as long as I can.
Good points made. If you really like something, physical is always going to be the way to go. I think most people who are fine with just digital have no interest in rewatching movies or replaying games.
The main reason that I started collecting physical media, is simple: I believe we are on a path of censorship that will effect classic films being reissued on new formats. I want to watch the original Art. Not a reimagining of the film, or censoring of the film.
I feel like there will always be companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Blue Underground, Severin, etc., that will put films out as they originally were, and with cool special features.
I usually delete comments about my hair since it has nothing to do with the content of the videos, but since you weren't mean about it, I'll leave your comment and answer. Like most balding men, I struggle with how my hair looks, but it's also something I feel people should look past. Looks are just on the surface and I want people to become comfortable with the fact that nobody looks exactly the way others want them to. Eventually I'll probably have my head buzzed or shaved, but getting used to seeing yourself in a very different way is a hard transition. I'm trying to do it slowly.
Just like in The Running Man or 1984, I have a feeling anything not deemed appropriate to the current agenda will be banned, that will include movies and music. If we can't hold it, we don't own it.
Censorship can happen over time and some versions of films also will just not be reissued. It makes me wonder how many R rated films with NC-17 versions on DVD have been reissued with just the R version.

I agree. Nothing beats owning your own piece of film and watching it whenever you like.
