I definitely agree. Over the years I sold a lot of comics, especially Marvel ones. I sold more than more 100 Marvel hardcovers and I don't regret it. When I started collecting I was very easily manipulated into the hype for things I don't really like. Today I have a curated collection and sometimes I even use my physical space to limit my comic shopping. I don't have space anymore, so I look at my shelves and think "do I want this new book. Will I read this? Is there any book on my shelf that can go so this new book can come in?". And that's the way I managed to have a collection with things I love, focusing on authors or series I'm interested in. It's a great advice that more people should take to heart.
I agree with the thoughts you shared, Jess, especially collecting what you love. We all have limited space and it is normal for our tastes to change. It is also normal for everyone's tastes to be different. Personally, I like reading the Golden Age Wonder Woman books and I want to try Golden Age Batman too. I love how the stories are simpler. They remind me of the comics I read as a child such as Archie, Tintin, and Asterisk (before I discovered Marvel). The Golden Age books also allow me to "take a vacation" from the problems and pressures of our modern world. I understand that I am in the minority and that is okay with me.
Oh man I know this is an old video but this video speaks so true to me. I am new to collecting comics/collected editions the last 2 years or so and have this fear of having too much and taking up unneeded space in my home. Luckily I have been just getting stories I know I absolutely love and will continue to enjoy for years to come. I totally agree with downsizing and knowing you will never read some of your books. It's almost the fomo that you get scared of missing out. Thank you for this video Omnidog. Newer sub and absolutely love your content and passion for comics
I agree, having a collection that you are proud of, not only because it looks good, but because you care for or has a special meaning to you, is an honest approach that I think will make you feel happier and fulfilling. Great video, Jess!
Couple months now that I'v decided to purge MY ENTIRE MARVEL omnibus collection. Could not be happier. In the end I just dont have the time and wont have the time to read it all. Kept all the indie and DC and got some extra dosh for Sideshows premium format DC goodies!!! DOT IT. You wont regret the great purge
I guess Joakim has gotten to you lol seriously this is one of those tips that more people need to be aware of. Almost no one does this when they start out and it's a time and money saver.
Interesting video. I started collecting about 2 years ago or so and before I started I said to myself "I need to have a controlled collection" meaning... I have about 50 Absolutes which I love and have the goal of collecting all of them eventually. Then I have like 30 Dark Horse Library editions, 20 Marvel Omnibus and then maybe another 30 or so Image hardcovers. Other than the Absolutes everything else is modern age, well regarded series and runs that I found to be interesting. And that's what I do! Just as a side note, I agree I don't own the Thor Simonson Omni because as much as I respect it I know it's dated and I just wont enjoy it. The new Jason Aaron omni, hell yes because it's a great modern run that fits what I like.
Im hitting that point in my collection where i gotta start purging books. Its going well for the most part, but im loaaaaathe to part with books that are signed or sketched in, even if i dont hold the work that highly anymore. Its a sickness! The real key for me is ‘am i excited to reread it?’ as you mentioned. Great video!
A great video that applies to anyone with a collection...wise words. When new to collecting we all tend to hoover everything up that you can find however, it's best to keep an eye on what you have, fine tune that collection to the items you care more about! 👍
Hey Jess, one thing I'm guilty of is not purging or curating my collections. I look at your books drooling over the Conan Omnis and maybe those DC Golden Age, especially Batman. Then I realise I'm in Australia and that the shipping on just the Batman omnis would cost me a bomb or two. 😕 You make valid points. For some reason I had this notion of collecting Avengers Omnis AND the equivalent Epic collections. I'm now wondering if I shouldn't offload the Epics that are double dipped in the Omnis. What to do? I'm a Cancerian so letting go is a real wrench. Food for thought. Cheers Jess. 👍😊😉
Great advice for book buying/collecting in general. Most of my library isn't related to comics at all but like you say, it's nice to be able to peruse your books and be excited about what you've collected and be more realistic about what you want to add in the future. Thanks for the video!
Completely agree, I'm very particular with my collection now really got into comics the last 2 years I read online occasionally but my physical collection is Hickman's east of west & marvel saga from Fantastic 4, Avengers and now Xmen. Invincible by kirkman and then some events/notable stories from marvel and dc. I look at my bookshelf and it makes me smile. These books are what I want to show my kids one day and hopefully, they share that same connection. Just gotta resist the occasional impulse buys. Love the video keep it up Jess.
Thank you so much for watching WestTea! I love all of Hickman's Marvel work so much and everything else he does too! And I just made a big haul video but those are all books I will love. I'm continuing to cull the collection!
Love this video…thank you! I started thinking about the same thing about a year ago and have sold off books in waves (not for money but more for the sale of keeping only what Iove). In the beginning it was really hard but the more I sold the happier I was with what I had left. At one point I had upwards of 150 omnibus and now I’m down to 30 and much happier. I’m not struggling (as much) to find space anymore. I completely agree with you that each of us need to decide what makes us happy. I’m glad that you shared this aspect of collecting with your audience. Honestly I can’t keep up with the amount of books being published anymore and having this new mindset makes things so much easier. Just my two cents. 😁
This is good advice for everyone that's not me. With comics I only sell books I upgrade. For people that do want to down size but are apprehensive about it, one thing I do that is really helpful is to take the items I'm considering selling and separate them from my collection. Then look through that stack every month or so and see if there are any that you've changed your mind about. I did that with my punk vinyl collection and after looking at the selling pile for 6 months or so I knew I could sell them without any regrets.
Jess, great video and great topic, thank you! I have my graphic novels, dc marvel action figures, video games, and even my beer can collection from the 1970s, and really took to heart your idea of curating your collections. I know it's about quality and not quantity, but you do get lost in being a completionist, or lost in the the hunt, or fear of missing out. I'm just a few years younger than you, and know eventually I am going to have to cull all that I have collected over the years. I do like the idea that I have had it and have enjoyed it and now it might be time to pass these "things" on to others who can enjoy them too. Good luck to you in your currating.
Great topic for a vid Jess! After almost 20yrs into comics/graphic novel, im entering this phase now. Being more selective of what i buy n collect to read n putting more care n thought into it. I think i get more satisfaction getting n seeing books at my shelves that i really liked n would re read rather than just getting a kick of getting everything n anything that ppl around us get just bcoz its 'a thing'! In simple words, quality over quantity these days for me...peace n love Jess, cheers!
Yes! Completely agree and think it's an extremely good way of fine tuning your passion/collection. Go back to the books see if there are stories that struck a cord that resonated and if not, as you said it doesn't make the book bad you just changed your tastes. Great video and great idea 👍🏼
I have a similar problem, I love too many different types of comics. So for a month or two I will focus on horror or Hulk comics from the 1970s, maybe next week I’ll get a war comic and grab some Batman comics that catch my eye. So to make room I will get rid of anything I know I will never read again. Great video
You know, at first I watched your video and thought to myself "Yeah, I'm never reading my Wonder Woman Golden Age volumes. I'll sell them." Then I changed my mind because it was "history" sitting on my shelf. Couple days ago I looked through the first few pages of volume 1 and decided they're not for me. Out they go!! 😄 George Perez is my Wonder Woman starting point.
That is awesome that you have a starting point! I'm looking forward to the SA WW and Batman as my starting points. But I've been going through my 90's X-Men books too and had to decide: out they go!!
I did this like 2 years ago and realized I personally don’t like reading a lot of marvel but enjoy indies and dc more so I’ve been buying what I love and haven’t looked back
I have limited space and budget but love my small but humble collection. The real test is are they repeat reads. My Roger Stern Spider-Man, my two Frank Miller Daredevil omnis ect...that stuff I know I will go back to over and over as well as the essentials( Watchmen, TDKR).
Joakim is great eh? I came to a similar crossroads about a year ago when I purged a few books. I found I really didn’t miss them and then continued to trim a bit more. Now I’m buying books I want to own, not books that I “think” I should own. I know I still have a long unread pile, (piles) but it’s a pile I want to read and I’m buying at a pace I can finally read and get caught up. It’s nice you made a video about this.
I blame DC’s new dust jacket design (copying Marvel) for the change in what comics people keep- it fits with the timeframe. Joke aside, you convince me with giving away the comics to those who’d enjoy it more. I only have one omnibus of Wonder Woman and Batman (two of Superman) in the Golden Age. I read them and don’t like that the hero is fine with suicide. Maybe it was fitting for the time, but it didn’t happen with Green Arrow nor Doctor Fate. I haven’t sold or donated them because I contemplate with the, being the first volume (or dust jacket DC logo design for Superman vol 2), but what you say makes sense.
Thank you Jess!! I wish I lived in the US. Here in Europe, we buy books at full cover and sell them for half. Shipping outside your own country is expensive. On top of that not everyone reads English comics or manga here! The population is much less compared to the US (English speaking and reading ) But, I fully agree, I will start selling again. I have to! Like you said, no place left and not everything makes me happy to look at!
I’ve been doing this for some time in a really slow process. Keeping omnis of X-men and Spiderman only, selling the rest and sometimes switching omnis for the same material in thick tpbs. Sometimes a thick tpb is easier to read than a 1000+ omnibus. The bad thing is that thick tpbs go oop too!! So the Caped Crusaders and the Dark knight Detectives are sadly a NO for me ... good luck with the sale!!
I agree I'm very carefull with what I bought but I wouldn't mind to buy something I normally won't buy unless there's a 50% discount. Nice intro by the way 🧐
Somehow I always think people are very brave when they are letting go of part of their collection. I don't buy stuff because they are collecters items but that's mainly because of space constraints. It's easy to say that I would have the same conviction I have now but to be honest I think I would end up like Belle (from beauty & the beast). So yes very brave to do this and even braver for putting it on the internet. Your thumbnail was everything!
Thank you so much! LOL I'm getting a lot of laughs over that thumbnail!! I also would end up like Belle if I had a huge library lol but fortunately I don't
Great video. I love Simonson Thor but respect not keeping it if you don’t care for it in your collection. It sounds so simple, and yet, I struggle with keeping some omnis that aren’t great but “complete the sequence”. Thank you for the food for thought.
i 100% agree with you! the only thing that stays in my collecion its the ones im gonna re-read in the future... for me having a 10000 books collection with a lot of stuff that not only you're not gonna re-read but with stuff that you hate it but have it from vol1 to vol10, its stupid hahahaha. but thats me.
I constantly curate my collection, imho that is what makes it interesting. I don't see the point of being a completist for the sake of just having everything.
I can't wait for Bronze age batman omnibus! Your describing the Maria Condo philosophy of decluttering. Everyone should look at their collection once a year and removing stuff they don't love. I try to do that myself especially because I'm running out of space. I do intend on reading every book so I do read these books first and then decide if i want to keep them after reading them. I'm currently half way through William Messner-Loeb's wonder woman run and I think i will be selling them off. The story isn't terrible just not great (regardless what Omar says) and is not something that i will want to revisit. You got some whales in that pile the savage sword volume 1 and some of those golden age batman go for a pretty penny.
Love that Cap'n Crunch Pop. Does it come with roof of mouth cutting action? Seriously though, I've been doing this too. I was going to buy Low HCs, but after reading through Hoopla. There's no need. I don't have to own it. I read it have those memories. Curate a Library you have read most of, not all, cuz it's nice to discover something new. But never feel the need to buy it all. If you were to pass on, what would you want to leave to to friends and family. Not a mess for them to figure out, something you're like, my dying wish is read this you'll like it.
Good video. I thought about going through the golden age books to learn where the characters came from but after reading captain america vol 1 and getting halfway through batman vol 1 i had to throw in the towel.
First you crush everything Omar ever wore with your Moon Knight t-shirt. Now you may have topped that with the Lady Mechanika t-shirt :D Heavy subject and also a really important one. I really dislike the youtube channels where they just tell people to get everything. I do a lot of research into what I buy and it's not 500 books label "Marvel Omnibus" each month :) for me it has to have awesome art (most of the time) and that rules out everything they chiseled on runestones ;) no manga or black & white, but most important is you find what YOU like and not what everyone else likes.
@@OmnidogsVault I'm not surprised it went fast. Probably just as well. As much as I love the look of omnis on a shelf, I prefer reading less heavy books.
I'm in this mindset. Getting my Spider-Man vol 5 omnibus. No regret, but I'm starting to think it is time to stop collecting the volumes. I looked at my Alias Jessica Jones omnibus, and decided to get rid of it. It was a good read, but I'm not driven to re-read.
I really feel this video. I love those Golden Age Omnis, I love they exist. But I came to the realization I didn't really have a desire to read them so they were sold. I still have Conan though since I still walk around in a furry lion cloth so.......probably too much info.
I think people sometimes get caught up in the buying, just to put it on the shelf because of hype or because my shelf has have the same books as Johnny Whoever and not because they are genuinely interested in certain books. I've been there, lol
This is going to happen a little more often with the new spine design. The aesthetics are starting to bug me looking at the shelf, and they no longer make me happy. :(
I'm generally not a member of any spine design haters club but I just got my Amazing Spidey omni 5 and yeah compared to the other spines it doesn't match and it's ridiculous. I ma kind of bummed by it
@@OmnidogsVault Yeah, if they weren't beside the ones in the same set then it wouldn't be bad. I've been cool with most of the changes, except for the small font in the middle of a run like the Spider-Man one. It just bugs me, which makes me not happy to look at them. Kind of incline with your theme of letting some books go. Unfortunately I really love some of those series, so it's either buy custom dust jackets, or part ways. :(
Jess..if I am someone who has no idea about Hellblazer the character what would be an ideal place to start? Hellblazer omni by Garth Ennis or Hellblazer 30th anniversary edition.. I'm confused as I've heard a lot about both these books..also are these crime or super hero stories..
I have been wanting Wonder Woman omnis for so long, I can’t get my hands on them anywhere because no one near me has them. Any recommendations where to get them??
@@OmnidogsVault Thank you for elaborating, and I’m going to pass only because I have the same edition and am on the hunt for a VF+/NM second edition with superior binding and, I think but can’t yet confirm, also slightly thinner paper.
Let me fix that for you. How to curate your collection when you have a habit of purchasing multiple copies of the same book because you forgot you already own it? Nice try.
I definitely agree. Over the years I sold a lot of comics, especially Marvel ones. I sold more than more 100 Marvel hardcovers and I don't regret it. When I started collecting I was very easily manipulated into the hype for things I don't really like.

Thank you so much! LOL I'm getting a lot of laughs over that thumbnail!! I also would end up like Belle if I had a huge library lol but fortunately I don't
Just starting the video and I’m immediately like yep, there’s the t-shirt king.
haha YAY T SHIRT KING
Great video. I love Simonson Thor but respect not keeping it if you don’t care for it in your collection. It sounds so simple, and yet, I struggle with keeping some omnis that aren’t great but “complete the sequence”.
Thank you for the food for thought.
this may be your greatest nickname yet lol
Thor is my favourite Marvel character. Everything else i would Throw out as Well. That Said, i dont sell anything.
Love that t-shirt!!
thank you!!!
i 100% agree with you! the only thing that stays in my collecion its the ones im gonna re-read in the future... for me having a 10000 books collection with a lot of stuff that not only you're not gonna re-read but with stuff that you hate it but have it from vol1 to vol10, its stupid hahahaha. but thats me.
hahaha we all collect differently!!
I Love your commentary always Jess but you are really reminding me of how a former girlfriend Broke up with me Ha ha ha ha lol!
Haha oh no!!! Sorry about that!!
That's a boss tee ..Lady Mechanika one of your favourite graphic novel ..right Jess?
Awesome stream as always
Peace and Love ✌🏻
Yeah! I got 2 different LM shirts!
Good thoughts and goals!
thank you my friend!
Such a great topic. Thank you!
Thanks! I hope it helps!
I need to purge, international shipping is discouraging me . I might just give away book to the library.
also an excellent way to get books into others hands
This dog built a book fort!
HAHA! My wife wants me to keep it up!!
I constantly curate my collection, imho that is what makes it interesting. I don't see the point of being a completist for the sake of just having everything.
👏😊
Now we know who wins the thumbnail of the year award!
Nice!! Thank you!!
I noticed the GA Batman books were going for real money and I was happily surprised!
@@OmnidogsVault yeah lucky you and good timing, but we all know that Gio will FOMO you into spending that found money on Blu rays LOL
@@nelsoncarvalho6338 HAHAHAHA GIOOOOOO!!!!
Yep! More curating to come from me!
Good video. I thought about going through the golden age books to learn where the characters came from but after reading captain america vol 1 and getting halfway through batman vol 1 i had to throw in the towel.
yeah they're not for everybody and that's cool
First you crush everything Omar ever wore with your Moon Knight t-shirt. Now you may have topped that with the Lady Mechanika t-shirt :D
Heavy subject and also a really important one.
Thank you for the shirt compliments!! I really have tried to focus on telling people what to avoid and what is good to get.
Did this a few years ago, curate, don't collect!
This is such a great idea. I've done this with my other books but need to get around to it with my comics. Do you still have the Simonson Thor omni?
I don't, sorry. It was the first to go
@@OmnidogsVault I'm not surprised it went fast.
I think ASM vol 5 might be where I stop too
I really feel this video.
@@dhmcadams662 agree with all your thoughts! Not sure about the loin cloth though lol
I just sat down. Come back to the table in 12 minutes, please. I need some time to look at the menu
lol, maybe you'll see something you'll want to order...
Feck the books...I'm here for the T.Shirt...
hahaha YESSSSS
Pillows and couch cushions? I think not. This fort is made from impenetrable Omnibus.
My wife likes it so much she wants me to keep it up! I'm like, but I have to sell these books lol!!!
Thanks for the heads-up, look forward to purchasing some books from you ! E-mail sent...
awesome!
For sure, space is an issue for most of us.
When you're out of room, like I am, decisions have to be made lol
Lmao that thumbnail is hilarious
hahaha thank you!
I just keep staring at my books and not reading. I actually put some up for sale.
I'm constantly reading but anything that I'm not excited about just can't stay
A collection can’t evolve if you don’t let things go
great point!
Jess..if I am someone who has no idea about Hellblazer the character what would be an ideal place to start? Hellblazer omni by Garth Ennis or Hellblazer 30th anniversary edition.. I'm confused as I've heard a lot about both these books..also are these crime or super hero stories..
go for Garth Ennis. It's a fantastic run and gives you a good idea as to who Constantine is. They are occult and human interest stories!
@@OmnidogsVault ohh..okay Jess..will wait for the omni then ..
Just curious, are you keeping Kurt Busiek's Conan omni?
I am! I think I'm keeping the first Conan Marvel omni too
I have been wanting Wonder Woman omnis for so long, I can’t get my hands on them anywhere because no one near me has them. Any recommendations where to get them??
Sure! You want mine lol? I’ve got vol 1&2 for a great price!
@@OmnidogsVault yes I’m interested
@@lynnromanova7236 ok great! Email me at: omnidogsvault2@gmail.com
@@lynnromanova7236 but email me quickly as someone else might be interested in them!!!
@@OmnidogsVault I did email yesterday :) thank you
How much you want for that Lady Mechanika shirt you’re wearing 🤨
haha they're available at Joe Benitez's site
A serious inquiry: which printing and what condition is the Simonson Thor omni in?
It is the first printing and the cover is VF/NM. The binding is still perfect. If you want pics or more info please feel free to email me! Thanks!
@@OmnidogsVault Thank you for elaborating, and I’m going to pass only because I have the same edition and am on the hunt for a VF+/NM second edition with superior binding and, I think but can’t yet confirm, also slightly thinner paper.
@@nextimaginaut gotcha, no worries!
Does this mean you're renouncing your title of The Caligula of Comics?
NEVER
i only love the golden age and silver age of comics and i am younger than you you should keep it because they are classics
Appreciate that but I have to make the hard decisions!
But if your not going to read them then what’s the point
@@RedRightStrawHat right. I agree they’re classics but I pretty much made my case for selling any books in the video
Do you have a list of what you selling?
it's everything in the fortress of books right now.
Are you selling does?
yes. if you want any you can email me at: omnidogsvault2@gmail.com
Let me fix that for you. How to curate your collection when you have a habit of purchasing multiple copies of the same book because you forgot you already own it? Nice try.
HAHAHAHA
All your thumbs down are from completist.
haha! Fortunately I only have 2 thumbs down so far!!
