- After a day spent climbing in the Mt Blue Sky area, two Lafayette residents returned home with a mountain stowaway. Days after their adventure, they found a Yellow-bellied Marmot digging a hole near a window well, and then they discovered that the she had babies! Concerned for their safety, they began making calls to wildlife professionals and rescue organizations to determine next steps.
Boulder Animal Protection advised them that marmots spend up to one year with their mother. They referred them to us for advice on how to return this family to their natural home. But before that could happen, tragically, the mother marmot (affectionately referred to as “Marnie” by the finders) was hit by a car and did not survive her injuries.
Together, Greenwood and the rescuers devised another plan for the newly orphaned kits. With help from Animal Control Officer Amber Burtis, they located the nest and safely removed a litter of marmots!
The siblings were transported to our Center for an intake check-up. After a clean bill of health, they settled into their cozy enclosure and enjoyed their first of many round-the-clock feedings.
This compilation shows their progress in rehab so far from blind babies to sassy youngsters.

What adorable little creatures! Thank you for caring for these gifts of nature, who are so vulnerable when they are young. Are these animals related to small prairie dogs, or am I confused? I think I thought they were the same thing, but now I realise I have no idea!
