They spent what I can only imagine being several years planning this - I think when they had the first draft that said "and then he runs across the battlefield while soldiers are charging perpendicular to him" they must've known that he wouldn't just phase through said soldiers.
I love the fact that he bumps into people on the long continuous run on the battlefield. It really shows that he doesn't care what others are doing because he gets right back up and keeps going. He's a man on a mission. It gives off that urgency feeling.
That one so called "mistake" for a scene where he got hit by running soldiers, for me, is beautifully natural. It suited the urgency while the camera kept on running farther leaving him behind and him running faster to keep up with the camera; my takeaway from that scene is the feeling of helplessness but urgency to make it out alive, keep up, and complete his mission. About the first soldier who bumped him and not getting up, for me, it is still a realistic thing a soldier might do, considering the psychological factors that could have led to him to do just so. It is like a moment where he just wanted to stay behind the chaos and excuse himself from charging towards certain death, or probably just hitting his head and getting all dizzy, coupled with the stress , confusion, and anxieties he also endured as a soldier. Maybe a mix of all these things led to him not getting up. Just my take on such an iconic scene; a soldier stumbling down physically and mentally.

Turned out it was a fingerbone by someone decomposing just outside their trench. What a terrible war this was.

Gotta give props to insider for the in depth research.
That moment where he bumped into the extra for the climactic last scene shows why doing everything practically is always better bc you can’t plan for that chaos
Lol it was hilarious in movie when he accidentally hit that guy while running against the trenches, because the guy he ran into just never got back up, just looked like he died on the spot
He had trench foot and that was the last straw and he just died

The scene where his friend dies because of that German pilot. That scene really pulled on my heartstrings man
At first I thought: "what an ungrateful sonouvabitch, he is rescued and kills him", then I realized that in a war they are your enemy, you don't kill because hate or vengeance, but because of duty. It's sad, but in a war you don't have "normal-life" rules...

Great movie. Great cinematography!
This movie was amazing. What I found so relistic was when the soldier died and the colour in his face was literally changing in front of my eyes until he was finally gone and he was basically blue. I dont think ive ever seen that before in a movie. Amazing.

I watched it yesterday for the first time. it is amazing.
The scene of him running through the field with thousands of other soldiers was unbelievably epic! This movie brings the whole new experience to watching a movie!
Not bad since there were only about 250 exteas that day ...my son being one of them.
I agree. That's an amazing scene. I also think that it happened only in the soldier's head, while he was dying on those stairs.
@@davidclarke8537 Thats awesome! It must have been such an experience!

that accident bump made an epic contribution of that scene god
So this is going to get Oscar for sure.
Yup
I HOPE!
@akshay Viswambharan so true
This is probably one of the best movies this awards season and Joker
Put all of your chips in for the Oscar win!
The real question is how many Oscars will the 🎥 win?
I love the fact that they kept the part where he bumped into the extra 😂 it makes it look more realistic and chaotic
@80's guy Or there was literally a second window in which they wouldn't bump into each other and it just didn't go as planned on the day.
they would say that most of the mistakes stayed in the movie to make it more realistic
Certainly added to the chaos of the scene and how it felt like he's failed
holstfly1 sure, but no soldier is gonna just stop running so that another soldier can run past. They were probably told to just charge full on with 0 care
I was wondering how they could rehearse and time that perfectly to be "one take" assuming it was planned. Now I know it wasn't planned at all lol.
In a time where green screen and CGI is 90% of a film production, we need to apreciate movies like this more, more practical effects than digital ones
The tv show the chosen did a really good job of a continuous take. It was pretty interesting.
The bumping actually makes the scene more realistic, so great that the director didn't say cut
Wow. So original
The guy actually stayed down because he was scared he ruined the scene
I felt bad for him I want to know his name

It's because when he jumps, they transition to a CGI shot.

@@UMAWRESTLETV dead joke
An even better "non-Hollywood" war movie is "Come and See." It's about a Belarusian boy who joins the Soviet resistance against his mother's wishes and experiences the horrors of war when Nazi forces encroach on his small village. Truly the most terrifying war movie I've seen. No acts of heroism or grand battles sequences, just the sheer horror of the Eastern Front
@@UMAWRESTLETV I'm the small child but you're the one making a 9/11 joke. Yeah ok.
The best actual continuous one shot that I've seen in recent history is from the series True Detective with Matthew McConaughey. It's amazing.

I stopped watching them when they gave Scorcese an Oscar for Departed, a copy-paste remake, because they have been snubbing him for so long...
Best ones dont even get to the Oscars.
Who else was physically exhausted by the end of the movie?
No
Mee and i was watching this at midnight
I got trench foot while watching that movie
Adlina Hadidi omg yes me too! Lol
I was mentally exhausted by the end. My grand-grand dad fought there as a young man, came home with a lungshot. He never really told much about that time, but now i can relate better. The scene when they crossed nomansland i found to put a particular strain on me. My "Ur-opa" told me once, that he was wounded lightly by what he thought was a shrapnell. Turned out it was a fingerbone by someone decomposing just outside their trench. What a terrible war this was.
One of the best films I've seen in a long long time.
"cobbled together" flatters that jump into the water - totally unbelievable (especially the pedalling legs because almost no-one does that IRL). Apart from that it's a great movie!
It's called 1917 because that's when they started shooting the movie
Alexander Romanov I don’t think you get the joke
They call it because it was a time in ww1
Yea it must have really taken that long to make a cinematic masterpiece. It felt so surreal Im convinced if they had a time machine.
Its just a joke omg

I loved the whole movie except the rat dragging the bag part that almost gave me a heart attack
