Perhaps their family or father's from the Itsekiri tribe and as a Nigerian you're automatically from there and perhaps they grew up elsewhere and wasn't really brought up in the language. So basically they're Itsekiri but yet doesn't speak and understand the language, which is quite common in Nigeria, especially among Millennials and generations after.
I am Yoruba. But I lived in Warri for 2 years(2017-2019). I have got so much connection to the city. The culture, the people, the food, the nature, the history, the weather. Oh I miss it, I just miss Warri.

The crowning of the new Olu of Warri, Omoba Tsola made me think of this song all through. I'm Igbo but felt so proud of the Itsekiri heritage, the whole pomp and stuff. So beautiful 😍

I am Igbo but both my grandpa, dad and I all grew up in the Delta and we were steady surronded by amazing Itsekiri folks. Great people... totally do love their culture!

They are Ilaje’s cousin and Ilaje are yoruba, so technically itshekiris are yorubas. They dress like urhobo and other minorities in the Niger-Delta as a result of intra-marriage between them, hence influencing their original Yoruba culture.

Itshekiri is actually a Yoruboid language that sound closely to Ijebu and the Ondo waterside dialects of Yoruba language. Over the years the neighbouring influence of the Edo,Urhobo and Ijaw has eroded the Yorubaness and the Itshekiris have evolved to take a distinct identity. Anybody who is well versed in Ijebu dialect will understand Itshekiri.
Ajojocraig the itsekiris are actually from ondo state, they’d migrated from there over 100 years ago through the benin river to ologbo border btw edo state and delta state before entering delta state to towns like koko and some part of ethiope and down to present day Warri .... btw I’m a deltan so I know what’s sup...

Ekiti, Owo, Ilaje, Ikale, Akure,Akoko Ijebu with person from other ancient Yoruba dialect speakers would understand them with varying degrees.
This is actually closer to Ondo dialect, not ijebu. They even say Origho for head, and ogho for money. that’s confam Ondo Dialect
