    Pi5 8GB + cooler + power adapter + case + NVME adapter + NVME will be more expensive than a mini PC with similar spec.

    • @EfHaichDee
      @EfHaichDee 3 місяці тому +1

      It's not about the cost but rather the learning that you get. It's like a learner starter kit for mini pc building - it's clearly geared at introducing people to build miniature electronics from scratch. If you already know and are experienced then yeah it's not really worth it, but that's the case with all such learning kits.

    • @nikobellic570
      @nikobellic570 3 місяці тому +1

      True, but reduce the spec to 4gb ram and SD card or usb3.0 storage. Then the price is a bit more palatable

    • @Volker-Dirr
      @Volker-Dirr 3 місяці тому +1

      If you buy it like that, then it is in my opinion not very clever. I only bought the Pi5, a 6€ mircoSD card and a 11€ case+fan. That's all. I am using a old no-name 3A power supply. And all is running fine.
      Why should i buy and extra cooler, if it is already included in the case? And why should i buy a NVME adapter and disk? I will never notice the speedup in my use case.
      In my opinion your variant is like buying an Intel Pentium CPU and but it in a big tower with an GeForce 4080 OC. Yes, there might be rare cases where that is useful. But in most cases it is not a clever combination.

      It's not that bad, after some time there is many alternatives and very cheap Chinese bundles for pi5. We started with nvme hat more expensive than pi5 4GB, now same thing starts at $5 at ali and some have set with cooler, fitting case power adapter. Also you can fit pi5 to many cases from pi3 :)
      Its just better than two months ago when everything labelled by pi5 was so expensive.

    The RPi is no longer a competitive device. Back when it was first introduced, It was revolutionary; it brought SBC price into the range of a microcontroller board (like the Arduino).
    Today, Arduino's are replaced by a $5 ESP32. And an 8GB RPi5 (with case, power supply, NVMe and daughter board) cost more than a fanless N100 with 8GB RAM, dual 2.5Gb interfaces, 256GB NVMe, case, and power supply included (about $160). And the N100 is X86_64 and twice the performance. You're free to run any off the shelf x86_64 OS; Windows 11, Linux, a router OS, whatever.
    I loved RPi; I've bought several, and still run an RPi4 as a Wireguard termination for our LAN. But I don't plan on buying any more. Times have changed, and with that the price/performance equation has tilted to low-cost x86_64 hardware.

    I bought all the Raspberry Pi models up to the Pi4, I bought the Orange Pi 5 and Orange Pi5 Plus though as the specs are much better, I use them for retro gaming emulation consoles, and the older Rpi models for Pi hole and I run my own email server on a Pi4, I used to run Octoprint for my 3D printers on a Pi3 but changed over to an Orange Pi Zero 2 W as it runs faster and freed up my RPi 3 for the Pi hole.
    I would have bought the RPi5 if it was available with more and faster RAM.

    What was once attractive about the pi in general was the low cost. Now they are pushing it into the low end computer arena running linux and it's very capable at that. The problem is this... I can buy a fully encased mini-computer with ssd storage, etc... windows installed if I want to bang my head on the wall... wifi, bluetooth et al for around the same price as an 8G pi 5 with power supply, heat sink, fan and case... without any ram. They've priced themselves out of the market as competition in the mini-computer market has driven fully functional and usable computer prices down. So, the pi 5 is mostly usable for hardware experimentation and has reached overkill.

    I received a Pi5 from my son for Christmas and haven't looked back. My desk is now free of a PC. I have been using this little guy as my daily desktop since Christmas and besides not being able to compile for my 3D printer's firmware, it has been basically trouble free. Tonight I am hooking up my second monitor (had to wait for my micro-HDMI cable) so we'll see how that goes.
    I've been looking all over for how to add a NVMe hat so I can use some speeder sotrage than the SD card I have been using. The NVMe hats I have read about have more drawbacks than sticking with the Micro SD card for now.
    Finally, I hope the smart guys in the Arch world (and their distrobutions) will get them over to the RPi 5 so I can go back to my Operating system of choice (Arco Linux).

    If you have an "unofficial" power supply that can provide 5A, you can set usb_max_current_enable=1 in the /boot/firmware/config.txt file to tell it so.

    • @dmckrk
      @dmckrk 3 місяці тому

      And You will get not much more because 5A does not mean 5V5A. Pi5 supports only 5V and that clearly break pd standard where You suppose to think about watts. Almost none of chargers will be capable today of such mode which btw require thick usb-c cable.
      This param will try to increase power for usb and external devices (via pcie) but will fail for most of use cases because you will be still at 5v3a at best.

    I have absolutely NO NEED for an SBC, I have a Pi 3B+ I don't use for anything, as it's only the 1Gb RAM version, so rather useless for most things. It was bought to run a 3D printer software, for a printer I still haven't bought, and probably never will. The Pi 5 for me would be around $200AUD when I include the PS, Cooler, Case(either with the cooler or not at all, as there doesn't appear to be a case big enough to take the board with the big cooler yet, but I'm sure someone is building a version in CAD as I type). It's still fairly cheap, but is it a better option than some of the OTHER SBC's on the market now. I would only be buying it as a LAB TOY, and have no real need of either this or any other SBC.....DOES NOT STOP ME WANTING ONE THOUGH !!!!! I'd rather spend my money on shit for myself while I'm alive than have it go into consolidated revenue when I die....NOW, time to go shopping !!!
