A countdown of some of the scariest anti drink driving commercials (or PSAs) ever produced. Also includes a few "honourable mentions" at the end as a special treat for you all. Hope you enjoy this one, it's one of my favourite countdowns yet!
Fun fact: the creepiness of this countdown was partly inspired by The Evil Within. It even includes the ominous music that plays during the main menu. It's a great game btw. You should definitely go and check it out... after watching this countdown, of course. Or at the same time. Whatever floats your boat.
(p.s. "drink driving" is a British term, fyi)

When I was young, I thought drink driving was driving with any kind of beverage, not just alcohol, so I always yelled at my dad that he was going to get arrested If he had a bottle of water in the car xD

Peapod, Mark "Chopper" Read is Australia's most notorious criminal after Ned Kelly, possibly even more well known than Ned these days! He's a former killer-for-hire with psychopathic tendencies, Eric Bana played him in the movie 'Chopper'.
I'm British and he's even well known up here, he's the Aussie equivalent of our Charles Bronson, a fruitcake with eccentric sensibilities. A naughty celebrity you know you should hate but begrudgingly have a soft spot for because you know all the people he killed must have been more naughty than he was. you hope.

god dammit Britain you have some of the most intense PSAs
The main guideline for a British PIF is that if your commercial doesn't make somebody wake up in the middle of the night screaming, you're doing it wrong.
That said, Germany has NO chill whatsoever, they make our PIF's look like Teletubbies. They can't even advertise drinks without going "you know what this needs? A jumpscare. Nothing like a good ol' cardiac arrest to make people want our caffeine drink. Man, I'm good."
That's definitely not true. German commercials are the most boring ones.

We Brits are very desensitised, I can only assume it is to do with the watershed - after 9pm almost anything is allowed on British TV (though truly graphic shit is held back 'til 11pm), ironically one of my first experiences with the watershed was a German porno on Channel 4.
It was around 1993 and I was 12, I was channel-surfing for something I could tickle my fancy to, it turns out the best shit that night was on terrestrial TV rather than cable TV as Channel 4 was showing as part of it's "red light season" some subtitled German movie about a dentist who would anaesthetise his female clients and then explore their vaginas with those tiny round mirrors and dental apparatus.
Have to admit that I had no fucking clue what was going on - I didn't even know vaginas required dentists, but it was an erotic (if confusing) thing to watch for a 12 year old who had a vested interest in masturbation. I think I considered asking my older sister if girls have teeth down there but thought better of it.

I love how even murderers don't support drunk driving. Cold blooded murderers, who have killed people for fun, don't support someone drinking and driving. Gives me the tiniest bit of hope for humanity.
Drunk driving manslaughter, infanticide, animal abuse, child molestation, child abuse, zoophilia, patricide and matricide are the crimes that criminals and prisoners don't tolerate whatsoever.

My Dad has been arrested for drunk driving six times. He is a Lt. Colonel and head environmentalist at a base, and has been for years. But one more screw-up and he's gone. It will destroy the lives of an ENTIRE family......Not just his. These ads are a great representation of how drunken driving effects those you love the MOST. Prayers to the victims.

The “Kathy” one will always be the saddest one to me. Poor girl! The way her eyes move towards the viewer before the screen cuts to black and her expression changes to where she looks like she’s about to burst into tears gives me chills and always makes me tear up.

These are banned, because people are cowards. They are not able to face the fact that they can't say no for a beer or two and can't stay away from drunk driving. They aren't uncomfortable because of the graphic images in these videos, they are uncomfortable because they see their own reflections behind the wheel.

This may sound weird, but honestly “Dave” gets to me the most. When I first watched it, it was the first time I’d cried at a piece of media for years. Keep in mind that I was watching a psa list when I saw it and I had seen much more messed up things (even child abuse) yet that one hit the most. I think it’s because the concept of being paralyzed/having someone I know be paralyzed is so terrifying to me. It's hard for me to watch even now. I don't know why no one talks about it, it just makes me feel so much dread, though it could be just me.
"Dave" really got to me, too. It makes me think about the pervasiveness of drinking culture (where I live in the U.S., too), peer pressure (ridiculous among adults, but it happens all the time), and the fact that anyone- driver or not- could end up like "Dave", who was actually reluctant to have 'just one more'. And I compare that ad to the others and there's a question that seems so cold and morbid: would I choose (for myself, or for my husband or mother) a merciful quick death or decades of paralysis and limited cognitive function? I just don't know. But it scares me, and I wish the U.S. had an equally aggressive campaign against DUI.
@@pennypay1 drinking culture is so messed up everywhere in the world. Seemingly noone has self control, people can't say no, and at the rare occasion when someone says no, others can't accept it. They can't accept that someone can enjoy themself without alcohol, can't accept that some of us still have some responsibility and we don't drink and drive. And I rather be laughed at for not having a drink than for one of my relatives has to wipe shite from my bottom after drunk driving...

You knew the risks when you decided to drive drunk. There could be a crash. People could get hurt or killed. You could get arrested. But one thing's you were wrong when you said it was no big deal.

Bruh I sent that 6 months ago when the video came out.
I just realized this when they were talking to the one guy who actually did drink and drive that it made me angry that when an old lady who shouldn't have been driving, crashed into my aunt and uncle's vehicle killing both of them- her license didn't get revoked. She didn't go to jail. My family fought in court and even though this lady killed two people she didn't go to jail or get her licence taken away. Now, I never knew my aunt or uncle, but I can definitely understand the anger of my family. And that lady wasn't allowed to talk to my family (her lawyer told her) and tell them sorry. But I'm angry my family didn't get justice for what happened. It still hurts my family to this day. I just.... it made me mad..

It probably ran for a good few years after that. I wasn't around when it was shown on TV, but from what I can gather, it was a very notorious advert. Much like the DETR "Julie" one from the late 90s, which ran again almost 10 years later.

You are just a star at these! Of all the scariest PIFs we have in the UK, not one will make one ounce of a difference. No difference at all until we can enforce a change of attitude, in those who choose to drink (or take drugs for that matter) and drive. I'm afraid we live in a society today where the likes of those who drink/use drugs, simply don't give a toss about anyone but themselves and have a blatant disregard for others. Sames goes for smokers.
If their attitude does not change and lives continue to be lost, then the only thing we can do is to put pressure on MPs to build more jails and jail the perpetrators for life with no bail and no half sentences being served. A life sentence means exactly that.

as a kid, "Jaqueline" scared me.... it was shown as an ad at a convenience store i went to as a kid, and me and my siblings were scared shitless... it was pretty effective cuz it makes me not want to drink and drive... or drive at night...

Oh god I remember the football one. I was a kid when I first saw that and it shook me to the core. Never ever drank and drove after that. I don’t even have non alcoholic, if I’m driving it’s strictly soft drinks or juice. Scarred me for life

I remember a polish one,that was not about drink driving,but speed driving with children.
It was somewhere like this.
"Hey,look,there is a 80 speed limit."
"Oh come on,we want to get on the beach as fast as possible,right?"
Then there was a crash sound,and an image that showed a destroyed car and a dead family.

Am I the only one who finds "Shame" unintentionally funny? The kid's got a huge backyard to run around in, and the driver just happens to barrel through in the one spot where he can hit the kid? What are the chances? The one DOE did with the car and the entire classroom of kids is even worse in this regard.
By contrast, "Dave," "Eyes," and "Kathy" are all very sad, truthful, and terrifying.

The Shame ad actually terrified me to be honest.
It's highly likely. A several tonne vehicle flipping and rolling, essentially acting as a missile, and the instinct of a child. Doesn't matter how big the space, if you're in the space you're at risk because you can't predict where it'll end up.
It was almost certainly based on a real death. There's nothing even remotely funny about that.

I've only just got around to watching this one now, and I have to congratulate you on finding a DETR 'What's it like to kill someone' ad that even I hadn't laid my eyes on before, and I managed to feel completely nauseated while watching the whole thing. Jesus, those adverts are... something else.

I've been alright dude, had a bout of laryngitis which knocked me for six for a good few - but I'm getting better and hoping to get back on track, just done a good ol' archive dump on the channel. I get so busy sometimes that I have to kind of dip in and out, seeing as I have about six different things on the go at any one point in time (make up review website, UA-cam channel, music, writing, working full time, crafting business) so aye, hiatuses are common but hopefully not lasting as long as they have been! How are you mate?
Oh believe me, watching my most horror-inducing PIFs in full HD was certainly a... um... treat. Yeah. Palms are sweaty. It doesn't feel like they had a different director, they all give off the same aesthetic and have the same cinematographic direction with the black and white cuts interspersed with the interviews, but well.. you learn something new every day.
@100060208795997215112 Oh dear, sorry to hear you've been under the weather! Having laryngitis must proper suck. I'm recovering from an op at the minute lol (nothing major, don't worry!). But yeah I pretty much do the exact same thing with my channel - I could only make a new vid every few months or so because of how busy I got with uni work, and I tend to put quite a bit of effort and money into making each one of my videos. I usually have to pay for materials to use in my introductions and title cards like stock footage, sound effects and AE templates. But it's something I'm passionate about and love doing, so rest assured it all pays off in the end. Aside from all that, I am doing pretty well thank you!
I love checking back to your channel now and then anyway, and I quite like how you do your PIF-dumps. Most of the ads you put on there are ones that I've never seen before, so it's always exciting delving into the realms of PIFs I have not yet seen! I can't help but say that I did have a fangirl moment when I first got hold of the DETR ads in HD for the first time ever. I think I may even be able to get a good HD copy of that creepy Fire Kills ad from the early 2000s, showing people being trapped in their houses while they burn alive. That and the scary "melty face woman" one for chip-pan fires. How exciting! ;)
Peachy Ah how lovely of you, thank you! No doubt if I ever get a hold of them I will add them to my next countdown which may or may not be a Fire Safety one... but we shall see. Seeing it in HD for the first time ever is probably going to make me relive the childhood-scarring terror I was exposed to whenever the "Trapped" ad would come on. Although I never got to see the melty-face woman on TV.
Oh my, that would be a fab idea! It's a shame not many people share our enthusiasm with creepy PIFs, although I am still very surprised people watch my PSA countdowns in their thousands... who would have thought?! A physical PIF convention would still be really cool though... it would be like Comic Con only with PIFs. People could get together and dress up as the chubby anti-piracy devil and we could showcase PIFs and PSAs from around the world and collectively judge them. And we could have different categories, kind of like the National Television Awards but solely for PIFs: like "Most Effective PSA" or "Most Creative Use For A Branding Iron" (cue _"The Pirates are out to get you..."_).
But we can only dream... :(
Alex could cosplay as the vaguely sexy 'YUUERRGH' man. He already kind of looks like him. PIF Awards sounds like a load of fun, get a panel together and cast a vote on them, that'd be fantastic! I don't know, maybe in the distant future if we got a crowdfunding thing done then the BFI would let us hire out the main room on the London riverside to showcase it.
But anyway, distant dreams aside, I look forward to the next video, and if you keep your eyes peeled over the next month, Alex and I have a few further projects up and coming and we may be branching into regular advertisements (something I planned to do but never really had the time, but... now I'm making time for it), we've got some more countdown/review videos and also a Halloween Special!

Honestly nothing makes me more excited than getting the notification that you've uploaded a new video - I'm pretty sure I've watched them all at least 5 times. I'm just happy there's someone else who shares my weird fascination with PSAs

I recall a MADD PSA in which a teenage boy was asked “Where will you be in five years?” In the extended version he mentions the positive futures of his friends first, but in the shortened version he says he’d be with his girlfriend “she’s the love of my life.” Then we see a montage between him downing beers at a party and driving his girlfriend home. Then he gets into an accident, and we cut to a roadside memorial for his girlfriend. He then says “I had a future.” Cue photo montage of him marrying and having a child with his girlfriend. Finally he asks the audience, “Where will you be in five years? Alive?” Then the MADD logo is displayed.

Don't get me wrong for one second, I absolutely love those millennium-odd DETR PIFs (I have to wonder what are those weird clips of shirtless people between the clips of the interviewed, though) - but Drinking And Driving Wrecks Lives takes the cake for me. They're absolutely grand! I actually can not name one single campaign that managed to produce a set of so effective ads. There are no bad PIFs from Drinking and Driving Wrecks Lives, but the three ones you had are definitely my favourites from them.
"Eyes" is definitely most haunting of them all. The glaring, staring eyes (of which the other one is focused to a different light level, by the way - great acting) will definitely scare you away from drink driving.
"Kathy Can't Sleep" makes me want to cry. It's one of the most saddening PIFs I've ever watched!
"One More, Dave" is also quite sad. The irony in it is strong enough to taste - and it makes you angry at those sad excuses of friends pushing Dave to drink more.
