Cadabra Don't worry! As long as you have a responsible driver as your supervisor, you're less likely to crash than an Open licensed driver. P plates are when you're at the most risk, and a lot of that risk comes down to the fact that P platers feel like they're on top of the world because they don't have to have their parents in the car anymore. Also, a little advice. When you pass the learners test, don't hop in the car and drive off. Have your supervisor drive you around for like half an hour. Question them about everything they do, and ANY concerns you have. Then find a neighbourhood where there's barely any traffic, smooth roads, and a speed limit that's 60 or under. Then you can drive. Also it's okay to go under the speed limit if there's little traffic! Only go at a speed you're comfortable with. You're much safer being relaxed at 65 than uncomfortable, tense, and anxious at 80. (PS, the best time to drive when you're starting off is after the afternoon traffic rush, before the sun sets. You don't want it to be too bright and busy.)
I'm noticing a lot of these that say "If you drink, then drive, you're a bloody idiot." I like how they just tell it like it is in those. We'd never get away with saying something like that over here in the States... We're too politically correct and would be too afraid to hurt someone's feelings to say something like that.

Thing is, if you're the one person doing 60 in among a stack of traffic that is doing 80 that creates its own problems. (No, I'm not suggesting you should be doing 90 instead, just saying that if you are going way below the speed of the rest of the traffic that is also not without its dangers.)
While absolutely no one should be speeding that much, it's generally safer to go the same speed as the traffic around you as long as it isn't excessively fast (such as 50mph in a 45mph)
Some of these definitely would have worked on me as a kid if they had aired here. American PSAs are pretty tame because of censorship, so the worst i think i ever saw were the Real Cost smoking ones. Never anything like WorkSafe.

The Meth Project ads (I think they were a nationwide program because it seems like anywhere that got those ads got the same ones) as well. Those kinda scared the crap out of me and made me slightly paranoid after watching them.
I saw a few work safety ads when I was in middle school, but that's probably because we were required to take auto shop in 8th grade. The "brain on drugs" commercials always made me hungry (at least until the Rachel Leigh Cook commercial, which made me want to break things...such a great release of pent-up energy). The crack cocaine "Don't even try it" ads made me laugh, though I took the Paul Reuben/Pee Wee Herman one more seriously than the Clint Eastwood one. After school specials were a bit more effective than the PSAs.

+Lunar Bunny Ha! I like your correction! I'm lucky because my body doesn't tolerate alcohol well, so drinking doesn't make me feel good. Apparently, I lack the right enzymes to process alcohol normally, so I don't drink at all. It probably saved me from at least a few nasty problems in life. However, I mainly attribute my really good driving record to being cautious and being plain lucky. My first vehicle was a motorcycle and I was distracted by a sexy pedestrian and narrowly avoided seriously hitting the car in front of me (true story!). I downshifted and braked as hard as I could without skidding and missed the car ahead of me by less than a foot going from 40 mph to zero. That was skill and quick thinking, but SERIOUS luck too! If I was going ANY faster - RIP.

I'd say that said wives/girlfriends aren't exactly the best partners if they know the boyfriend/husband is drunk and don't stop them from driving, especially when they're sober themselves, and assuming they could drive instead. If you care about someone, you wouldn't let them do something that puts themselves (and you) at risk.
These are designed to focus on specific behaviour from more than one point of view. They were very successful since although the population has increased since the 80's and there are many more cars on the road now, the death toll has reduced by up to 66% since the ads began in the 80's.

Actually we rarely have horrendous crashes. Only like 2% of people watching these adds know that the adds are an exaggeration to grab the viewers attention.

It is, even though we don't have extreme traffic or huge main roads, we have lots of slopes and sharp corners and speeding and drink driving are actually very common, but not in extreme extreme cases. Having a wine and a few beers is totally normal - the legal drinking age is 18 and driving is 15. But lol we've all drunk alcohol waay before that. I had my first beer at 8. Tatsted awful and put me off, same with that one time mum let me have a puff of her fag and I hated it like bloody mercy and she said "Don't ever smoke, it's worse than it tastes. It's also like when you do something naughty or taste something really good and you know you shouldn't have anymore but you still want more and do it anyway. Don't be a dumbass, k?'
Actually, in NZ, it isn't an exaggeration. It's not something that happens constantly but it does happen a lot more than you think. Next time you go on a road trip, count how many crosses you see. There'll be far too many

Ditto. If someone else doesn't want to follow the law, any crash they cause is on them, not you. It's not hard to give yourself time to get where you're going, and honestly, nothing is so important that you have to break traffic laws to get there. "Haunted" was by far the best made ad. 15 years later, and you can still see that ad on TV in Australia occasionally and it is because it works so well. Seeing violent crashes is one thing, but a PSA shouldn't rely on visual shock, as once the ad is gone, you probably won't think about it again. Similar to a Horror film that relies on jumpscares. The ones that really stick with you are the ones that make you think, and the ones that make you feel sympathy. Bad-Acting Bogans getting caught on train tracks and idiots fumbling poison into their eyes don't do that.

Patchy I think they’re most distressing and depressing tbh. They lose all of their friends over it happening to them, which honestly shows they weren’t true friends at all if they choose to ditch someone who suffers from severe brain damage. If they were true friends they’d stick by their friends side and be as supportive and helpful as possible with taking care of them in their state, by not losing their patience if their friend starts acting in a manner that frustrates them.

What I'm taking away from this is that Australians and New Zealanders are always coming back home from a barbeque or friendly get-together. That doesn't happen so much in Britain because our weather's shite. That's why all OUR PSAs are about bloody house fires. Because we're bloody COLD!
At least you don't have blazing 120 degree Fahrenheit temperatures with high humidity. I would rather it be cold than hot all the time. It only snowed half an inch here once and even then the weather wasn't even that cold, and it only lasted about a month.
It never snows down here, even in the parts like Melbourne where it is closest to Antartica (Apart from Tassie). I would rather live in the Northern Europe, I adore snow.

When you have too many idiots on the road that don't seem to understand the phrase "Drive Safely" or people who think that they can handle things on their own, you kinda run out of subtle ways to get the message across and just left to be fully blunt about it.

we're chill about most things but when it comes to actual safety out on roads and the dangers of smoking, drugs and drinking we have to be pretty blunt and honest with the exicution.
12:55 my mother was in a similar crash 26 years ago, 10 years before I was born, she was drunk and a friend of her friend asked if he could drop them all home. They all hopped in and drove down the road, my mom was in the front and my aunt and her 2 friends in the back, there were no seat belts in the back, just in the passenger and driver seats. Then, just after coming out of the town the guy went into the wrong lane and collided with another woman, (the woman suffered minor injuries) the friend behind my mother collided with the back of my mother's seat and broke part of my mother's spine, 5 ribs, her left ankle and her left front tooth. The friend who had collided with my mother's seat snapped her neck and died instantly, my aunt and the 3rd friend was OK, but my aunt had broken her collar bone and her wrist, the third friend didn't break anything, she suffered minor injuries. My mother was immediately rushed to hospital where she was on life support for an unkown amount of time (she never told me). The man was put on trial and sentenced to 16 years or more, my mother was unable to attend the trial. She got out of hospital 8 months later in crutches (thank god nothing was permanent) she suffered from depression and missed her leaving cert during the time in hospital, she completed her LC and got 450 points (alot of points if you didn't know) and she started working with the HSE. Doctors said she was extremely lucky to survive and I should be grateful, and I am. I should not be here to tell this, when I was 12 she suffered from cancer in her oesophagus, she was cured (my uncle not fortunate as he passed on from lukimia, rest his soul). My mother is an extremely lucky person and I'm so happy to have her here to this day.
Honestly, I wish they would make all new drivers/cyclists watch PSAs about car accidents before being given their licenses. It wouldn't stop everyone, but a good dose of "being scared straight" might help a little. I've only been driving two years, and the number of accidents I've witnessed directly are more than I would've cared to have seen in a decade, and ALL of them would've been prevented if people weren't going 20 over the limit, or had had "just one more".

What really gets up my nose is when I go to a BBQ/party and someone always insists to me that I can have at least 2 drinks and drive. I won't have one alcoholic drink if I am driving. It's not about getting caught drink driving, it's about me not wanting to get into an accident and thinking, "I wonder if the accident could have been avoided if I had nothing to drink". So please, don't pressure anyone to have a drink.
same, my dad fell asleep and crashed with me twice. once was a hard hitting rear ending that totaled the car. the next he sent a road sign through the windshield and onto my sister and i’s legs. people tend to forget that cars are huge, two ton metal machines that can kill if control is lost for a single second.
I'm noticing a theme with AU/NZ PSAs that are lacking in US/CA PSAs: the aftermath. They show the events leading up to the crash in the US, then fade to black and show words. In AU/NZ, they show the paramedics, the hysterical parents, and then you five months later still in traction in a hospital. Far more powerful.
The "trapped" ad has always scared the sh*t outta me, I've always changed the channel before it shows the dead passenger because I get freaked out whenever I see that guy staring, but I can handle any other ad about drink driving/speeding
We don't have a choice. A few hundred dead on our roads per year might sound minimum to someone else, a few severely injured or dead in their workplace. But we're a population of 25 million and if we didn't try to scare, place fear and anxiety in our population, we'd become a nation of few because reality is that humans make stupid decisions but for example, on the roads you're also looking out for every other person doing the wrong thing.
Especially when you see people become pin balls. It's basically 45 minutes of car billiards with the other ones being ad breaks. (I am one sadastic person. What is wrong with me?!)
I was on the bus, not sitting right in my seat as the car beside us swerved in front and the vehicles collided, sending me flying down the bus. Anything could have happened, head impact, spine, the only thing going through my mind was that this was it, wasnt it? I was so grateful that I was the only one injured and it was minor. So 51:05 really godamm resonated with me, almost PTSD like. I could have been concussed, I may not have been able to write this comment, or worse.

Most of these were pretty creepy, but the WorkSafe ones were the worst! Maybe because I've worked in part-time jobs were accidents can happen, and I'm always embarrassed to ask for help. Those ones seemed really realistic to me.

Cadabra Don't worry! As long as you have a responsible driver as your supervisor, you're less likely to crash than an Open licensed driver. P plates are when you're at the most risk, and a lot of that risk comes down to the fact that P platers feel like they're on top of the world because they don't have to have their parents in the car anymore.
Also, a little advice. When you pass the learners test, don't hop in the car and drive off. Have your supervisor drive you around for like half an hour. Question them about everything they do, and ANY concerns you have. Then find a neighbourhood where there's barely any traffic, smooth roads, and a speed limit that's 60 or under. Then you can drive. Also it's okay to go under the speed limit if there's little traffic! Only go at a speed you're comfortable with. You're much safer being relaxed at 65 than uncomfortable, tense, and anxious at 80.
(PS, the best time to drive when you're starting off is after the afternoon traffic rush, before the sun sets. You don't want it to be too bright and busy.)

It’s very difficult to explain to a mama why there can’t be an open casket.
Thing is, if you're the one person doing 60 in among a stack of traffic that is doing 80 that creates its own problems. (No, I'm not suggesting you should be doing 90 instead, just saying that if you are going way below the speed of the rest of the traffic that is also not without its dangers.)
While absolutely no one should be speeding that much, it's generally safer to go the same speed as the traffic around you as long as it isn't excessively fast (such as 50mph in a 45mph)

The Meth Project ads (I think they were a nationwide program because it seems like anywhere that got those ads got the same ones) as well. Those kinda scared the crap out of me and made me slightly paranoid after watching them.
I saw a few work safety ads when I was in middle school, but that's probably because we were required to take auto shop in 8th grade.
The "brain on drugs" commercials always made me hungry (at least until the Rachel Leigh Cook commercial, which made me want to break things...such a great release of pent-up energy). The crack cocaine "Don't even try it" ads made me laugh, though I took the Paul Reuben/Pee Wee Herman one more seriously than the Clint Eastwood one.
After school specials were a bit more effective than the PSAs.

I'm lucky because my body doesn't tolerate alcohol well, so drinking doesn't make me feel good. Apparently, I lack the right enzymes to process alcohol normally, so I don't drink at all. It probably saved me from at least a few nasty problems in life.
However, I mainly attribute my really good driving record to being cautious and being plain lucky. My first vehicle was a motorcycle and I was distracted by a sexy pedestrian and narrowly avoided seriously hitting the car in front of me (true story!). I downshifted and braked as hard as I could without skidding and missed the car ahead of me by less than a foot going from 40 mph to zero. That was skill and quick thinking, but SERIOUS luck too! If I was going ANY faster - RIP.

I'd say that said wives/girlfriends aren't exactly the best partners if they know the boyfriend/husband is drunk and don't stop them from driving, especially when they're sober themselves, and assuming they could drive instead. If you care about someone, you wouldn't let them do something that puts themselves (and you) at risk.

It is, even though we don't have extreme traffic or huge main roads, we have lots of slopes and sharp corners and speeding and drink driving are actually very common, but not in extreme extreme cases. Having a wine and a few beers is totally normal - the legal drinking age is 18 and driving is 15. But lol we've all drunk alcohol waay before that. I had my first beer at 8. Tatsted awful and put me off, same with that one time mum let me have a puff of her fag and I hated it like bloody mercy and she said "Don't ever smoke, it's worse than it tastes. "Haunted" was by far the best made ad. 15 years later, and you can still see that ad on TV in Australia occasionally and it is because it works so well. Seeing violent crashes is one thing, but a PSA shouldn't rely on visual shock, as once the ad is gone, you probably won't think about it again. Similar to a Horror film that relies on jumpscares. The ones that really stick with you are the ones that make you think, and the ones that make you feel sympathy. Bad-Acting Bogans getting caught on train tracks and idiots fumbling poison into their eyes don't do that.

I think they’re most distressing and depressing tbh. They lose all of their friends over it happening to them, which honestly shows they weren’t true friends at all if they choose to ditch someone who suffers from severe brain damage. If they were true friends they’d stick by their friends side and be as supportive and helpful as possible with taking care of them in their state, by not losing their patience if their friend starts acting in a manner that frustrates them.

I didn’t know they were a thing until I got into a car accident. It was so scary. Seeing this I can see how lucky I am that I’m ok
12:55 my mother was in a similar crash 26 years ago, 10 years before I was born, she was drunk and a friend of her friend asked if he could drop them all home. They all hopped in and drove down the road, my mom was in the front and my aunt and her 2 friends in the back, there were no seat belts in the back, just in the passenger and driver seats. Then, just after coming out of the town the guy went into the wrong lane and collided with another woman, (the woman suffered minor injuries) the friend behind my mother collided with the back of my mother's seat and broke part of my mother's spine, 5 ribs, her left ankle and her left front tooth. The friend who had collided with my mother's seat snapped her neck and died instantly, my aunt and the 3rd friend was OK, but my aunt had broken her collar bone and her wrist, the third friend didn't break anything, she suffered minor injuries. My mother was immediately rushed to hospital where she was on life support for an unkown amount of time (she never told me). The man was put on trial and sentenced to 16 years or more, my mother was unable to attend the trial. She got out of hospital 8 months later in crutches (thank god nothing was permanent) she suffered from depression and missed her leaving cert during the time in hospital, she completed her LC and got 450 points (alot of points if you didn't know) and she started working with the HSE. Doctors said she was extremely lucky to survive and I should be grateful, and I am. I should not be here to tell this, when I was 12 she suffered from cancer in her oesophagus, she was cured (my uncle not fortunate as he passed on from lukimia, rest his soul). My mother is an extremely lucky person and I'm so happy to have her here to this day.

Honestly, I wish they would make all new drivers/cyclists watch PSAs about car accidents before being given their licenses. It wouldn't stop everyone, but a good dose of "being scared straight" might help a little. I've only been driving two years, and the number of accidents I've witnessed directly are more than I would've cared to have seen in a decade, and ALL of them would've been prevented if people weren't going 20 over the limit, or had had "just one more".

Don't speed. Wear your freaking seat belt. Don't drink and drive, or get in the car with someone you know has been drinking. Pay attention to the train schedules. Don't mess around with dangerous chemicals/tools/whatever if you don't know how to use them. And use your curtain air-

What really gets up my nose is when I go to a BBQ/party and someone always insists to me that I can have at least 2 drinks and drive. I won't have one alcoholic drink if I am driving. It's not about getting caught drink driving, it's about me not wanting to get into an accident and thinking, "I wonder if the accident could have been avoided if I had nothing to drink". So please, don't pressure anyone to have a drink.
same, my dad fell asleep and crashed with me twice. once was a hard hitting rear ending that totaled the car. the next he sent a road sign through the windshield and onto my sister and i’s legs. people tend to forget that cars are huge, two ton metal machines that can kill if control is lost for a single second.
I'm noticing a theme with AU/NZ PSAs that are lacking in US/CA PSAs: the aftermath. They show the events leading up to the crash in the US, then fade to black and show words. In AU/NZ, they show the paramedics, the hysterical parents, and then you five months later still in traction in a hospital. Far more powerful.

We don't have a choice. A few hundred dead on our roads per year might sound minimum to someone else, a few severely injured or dead in their workplace. But we're a population of 25 million and if we didn't try to scare, place fear and anxiety in our population, we'd become a nation of few because reality is that humans make stupid decisions but for example, on the roads you're also looking out for every other person doing the wrong thing.

I was on the bus, not sitting right in my seat as the car beside us swerved in front and the vehicles collided, sending me flying down the bus. Anything could have happened, head impact, spine, the only thing going through my mind was that this was it, wasnt it? I was so grateful that I was the only one injured and it was minor. So 51:05 really godamm resonated with me, almost PTSD like. I could have been concussed, I may not have been able to write this comment, or worse.
